Anbernic's latest vertical console looks a lot like a big, wide Game Boy. It's the RG 405v and it plays all the way up to GameCube and SOME PS2 pretty well...

man i love your vids even tho i dont buy anything
bro speaking
Same here 👌
Basically everyone in his community
We all window shopping here homie
Same haha
Nice to see some companies working toward out of the box functionality, that makes this way less intimidating for people
The only downside is that they really are playing with fire when it comes to these preloaded sd cards. It's a level of pseudo-piracy and non-intuitive design that holds these back from universal mainstream appeal and I just don't know how would ever be broached unless someone like Sony or Nintendo just licensed a ton of games for them, which would never, ever happen.
So it's such a bummer that there's no real modern intuitive way to get a regular person a handheld that just plays these games, even if Nintendo or Sony would make a slaughter selling the roms for $0.99 on a storefront.
You guys talk like anbernic is new to the game. Playing with fire? Dude if nintendo wanted them you think they wouldn't have done anything in the last decade? Nintendo actually has been fishing for top quality emulation people to poach for their own emulation on switch.
they know what they did putting edges to stop gameboy color games on the ds like y
@@colinmartin9797
Sony and Nintendo don't have the license for many of these older games aside from the obvious nintendo or Sony developed ones. Sega actually help a lot with emulation and have no issues with them.
We can just buy them, no legal issues.
Edited for clarity.
@@54356776 licensure for distribution can still be a gray area but that's cool to know about sega. Thanks for sharing!
Quite a few RUclipsrs don't really talk about a consoles ability (or lack thereof) to connect to a TV and play couch co-op. I think it's a big feature and a big deal for a lot of people looking into getting one. I'd enjoy a video from you about that side of things.
I agree with @dawsoncjames on the lack of discussion of HDMI connectivity to TV by a lot of RUclips handheld games console reviewers Bob. It would really be awesome to know if and how well these devices perform with a TV screen connected as well as standalone. This would (in my mind at least) make the purchase price of the handheld unit a lot easier to rationalize, since if the TV performance was good also, you would automatically have both the portable game play functionality fun plus a home TV console setup to be able to play with a friend with an extra Bluetooth controller. JUST my opinion Bob but by adding this additional information to your already awesome handheld reviews, it would really set your reviews miles apart from the "rest" and make them even more comprehensive and make your reviews "shine" even more... Just my $0.02. Have a great weekend! Fred
Purpose driven devices are kinda more important. Is it nice to have both? Of course, but there will always be a compromised experience in one way or another. It has video out, but lacks Bluetooth. So you better have a long ass cable and the longer the cable, the less stable the signal. Etc etc etc. If ya want both get a steamdeck and a USB c dock or something similar. It will pay for itself based on its simplicity alone
Check the guys who specialize in these things, taki udon and retro game corps are good
these micro HDMI ports are very unreliable, I think that's why a lot of devices ship without them, reviewers go mad about not having micro HDMI but when you actually try them out the screen blinks every time you rock the console a little bit, making them pointless in practice.
this is a really important point, and you're right. a lot of reviewers don't touch this when it might be a main use case for some people
This is my first portable gaming device, and I got it this week. I love it so far. Coming from not having a device like this before, I didn't find it heavy or chunky at all, just really comfy to hold. Really satisfied so far
I bet wulff den bullied other nerd with things like "NO, YOURE STUPID"
Is it possible to view it on TV? if not with a cable, does casting work?
@@iclonethefirst I haven't tried casting (since it's kinda inconsistent, and I don't trust a device at this price to scale to a big TV) but it does not have HDMI out. In my research on this, basically none of the mobile chipsets do big screens super well, IMO. More of a Steam deck and up feature to work well
Your B roll, video resolution sharpness and stock music choices are getting better and better all the time! Almost 1 million subs. Keep up the great work!
Wow. Welcome to Japan! And thank you for the nice contents as always.
Haven't used the android only anbernic devices but from what I know, they have their own custom front-end that you can launch with a button or maybe in the notification/settings pull down.
Love the content as always Bob
Ill have to wait for the next one that can run the full gamecube library
Hey Bob. I’m the one who asked you to make the 405m video. Good to see you’re going to anbernic. I want to get a rp3+ just to have at home. I use my 405m as my out of the door handheld that I take to work or whatever. Most of the reasons to put gammaOS on the 405m and 505 are to clear up the problems with the screens. Which the 405v has the same screen. Also the 405m and 505 have problems with the shoulder buttons when playing google games. Like if you want to play dead cells or call of duty mobile, stock firmware doesn’t have the right mapping for the shoulder buttons. I know you put on gammoOS lite but I still think you should put more stock into the OS cuz it’s only one dude and he’s doing a lot of work. Love your vids man. Thanks for reading.
Dangit! You did your video first! I just unboxed mine yesterday but didn't get a review done. I'm excited to do mine! ^_^
Would love to see a tier list from Bob on all the hardware he's reviewed. It'd be neat to see where new ones rank as well.
Yes, would love to see this.
Appreciate the honest reviews. Do you do “favorite handhelds” videos at all, would love your take on the best ones so far, for specific emulators/systems, etc.
"Ice Climbers count as two"
Those are fighting words
The main reason for custom os is to fix that ugly sharpening, that anbernic still didn't fix for some reason. You won't notice it that much playing mario, but it is very apparent in resident evil games or any other game with dark locations or just overall higher contrast scenes. Also it somehow makes pixelated textures look even more outdated somehow. I heard that gamma team is already working on gamma os for rg405v
I suspect they may keep Mario out of the ...influencer units.
So they don't influence themselves into a copyright takedown. And yeah, GB's square, that's 4:3 so it's gonna look funky.
I ran into the same issue where it seemed like the Z button wasn’t mapped to anything on the dolphin emulator and by accident I found out that Z was pre mapped to the “select” button. I don’t know why but that’s the last button I figured would be mapped to Z so I never tried it.
Worth noting the button on the left side of the device launches into a new pre-confirgured Anbernic frontend that wasn't present on the M.
Love the Barefoot Contessa reference and it was funny hearing Jeremy so much. His name is Jeffrey lol
I’d love to get this! I have the Miyoo mini plus and absolutely love it! It’s my first emulation device. I’ve been wanting to play some Dreamcast GameCube and a few other systems that the Miyoo can not play. I’ve heard pretty good things about this device
4:18 Anbernic should really make the face buttons in the Nintendo style (A in the right) but with the colors of the PlayStation (so the A is a deep red and the B is a light blue). I think that would be a sick way to customize your Anbernic!
I personally prefer skittle style buttons with no letters on them at all just to avoid this confusion
@@dreamybull1509
You mean Snes style buttons ? That's what they are. The North American snes is the only one that didn't have these buttons or style.
I always love the "class presentation" energy from these videos
I would have never known this was out until this video. I just ordered one because of your video. Thanks!
If I hadn’t just brought a steam deck I’d probably be all over this. Looks great.
I bought mine yesterday. Hasn't gotten here and I mostly bought it for emulation lmao.
we all bought it for the emulation lmao, everything is getting ported to like the switch and stuff so games like rdr1 are fully playable at 30-60fps@@josephjahn2239
If Anbernic can make a comfortable NDS/3DS emulation device, I think I might just jump over the moon. NDS and 3DS games are always some of the hardest to emulate with both hardware and software. If their new device is ergonomic and can ACTUALLY handle 3DS games, then I would be willing to bet that the 3DS consoles on eBay wouldn't cost so much anymore.
That's a great point that I honestly hadn't thought about. Yeah, 3ds consoles and games are going for more than a switch at the minute and rising. It's ridiculous.
Edit: DS is still dirt cheap though and its the best way to play ds games.
I've been complaining about the 3DS prices for over a year now, and it has only gotten worse. There's just really no good option if you want to be able to play all 3DS games, other than a 3DS. As far as NDS/DSi prices, my collection has been loving where they're at. :)
3ds is never going to happen
NDS is fine on a touchscreen Android phone
I highly disagree. It's still only one screen. I have a Steam Deck, and it can run some 3DS games with Citra but it is definitely not ideal at all if you play any game that actually uses the touchscreen. Also, if you want to try and make an argument for NDS specifically, go play The World Ends With You on an Android phone. Then come back and tell that it was "fine".
I was waiting for this review. Picked up an RG35XX for low power retro stuff, but I'm itching for something that can play at least N64 games (specifically in a Gameboy style form factor, I don't want a Switch-style one).
How are you finding the 35xx ? I've been looking at one for a while but another device always comes out and gives me doubts.
Are you planning on reviewing the CRKD Nitro Deck? You always do very thorough and critical reviews of controllers when you do them and I want to know what you think about that as a Switch controller option. They talk a great game, and If its as good as they claim, I want one, but if it sucks I don't want to waste my money.
I just got the RG35XX via tiktok of all places lol, but now I have to binge all the Wulffden videos on these little emulation devices because I think I want a second handheld teehee
Omg I was so stressed and feeling super awful and now I’m eating lunch, watching bob, and hearing pikmin 1 music at the same time? I am cured. Thank you Bob
We need more of Jeremy
I got an Anbernic RG353V for my kid, and it was on point with expectations, and in tinkering with it in preparation for her birthday kinda made me want one of these myself. This would be the one for me perhaps. The 353 is good in every way except battery life, but it's plenty for a kiddo, and I'm probably not going to have long sessions on one of these. That was the dealbreaker on the Steam Deck for me, because I know it's worth every penny, but for my use case, if I'm playing games out and about, which isn't too often, I'd rather play TotK for 3ish hours than Elden Ring for less, but I'd love a device like this for sure.
Hey for future videos, a good benchmark for testing gamecube emulation is to test a game thats notoriously unstable and thats Tony Hawk American Wasteland, even on the rog ally i had trouble getting a consistent 40 fps, on my brand new phone it barely even gets 20 fps
I have noticed sometime when I make my own icons a square doesn't look right because the tool bar forms an optical illusion.
The barefoot contessa bit was hilarious 😂
i find it funny i watch all these videos about these devices yet only use my hacked 3DS and steam deck for everything with no intention to buy anything else lol great video though bob entertaining as always.
I bought a Miyoo Mini + to mostly play old pokemon games.. I am keeping an eye on your channel for a future purchase once im done with all the old pokemons which could be a while.
Sick dude. That’s how these handhelds will be for awhile I think.
I know this channel is mostly just handheld vids, but do you think you could ever do more videos on upscalers?
One of these days I'll finally buy an emulation device, but it is not this day. My indecision is never ending
Great Stuff, as always!
Safe travels to Japan. Excited to see footage from the trip.
@ 6:05 That looked like DBZ Budikai Tenkiechi 2 and from what I could see it ran ok.
Sorry for not being very up to date but I have the following question.
Would the recent updates in Citra (main and/or mmj) like support for vulkan etc now allow playing 3ds games on the retroid pocket 3 (non-plus)?
Or is it still unachievable?
What about dolphin and gc games?
Thanks.
I’ve been using the retroid pocket 3+ it can run up to PS2 but for those you have to mess with the settings on a game by game basis to get the game running. Other than that it’s a solid handheld imo.
What about GameCube?
@@joseulisesdelgadochio167 it can run most GameCube games yes but some not at full speed. There’s a spreadsheet online the community has made to see the game list and what settings to put to get the games to work right online
This is the form factor I’ve been waiting on! Perfect size screen.
the valiant return of "YA HUNGRY!? FIFTY!"
oh and the video was great too
Wow a double header Wulff Den ! This week ! Great Week ! Especially since I am in the other Video ! #Wulffdendad
There are so many of these now lol. I just got a New 2ds and modded, so now I don't need these anymore lol. But still love watching your videos and learning how they are advancing the Emulation scene!!!
Broke my leg so i bought a Miyoo Mini Plus. Should help the recovery time lol videos are awesome man
As for why SNES games look stretched, many emulators use an aspect ratio of 8:7 for the SNES due to that closer resembling the original pixel aspect ratio of the console before it’s displayed to a TV.
The 4:3 “stretched” look seen on the system is closer to the original console on a CRT TV, and it’s a long-standing debate on which is more correct for certain games.
I had to return the miyoo mini plus because it was way too small in my hands. Can not wait to receive the 405v
Recently got this and the Odin 2 to round out my atomic purple emulator collection
I will never get tired of the “yahungry!” Line read. It gives me life Me. WULFF bob
yea. i love the screen size it doesnt feel small anymore. i imagine it is the same field of view as if i am playing on my old 24in tv and seated back a bit
love this thing. starfox out of the box, perfect dark out of the box
battery life is great!
Can you download games directly from the device?
For GameCube, one really needs analog triggers to take full advantage of the game library. Metroid Prime, for example, has difficulty locking onto targets properly with digital-only functions. Otherwise, I’d be fully on board with this product!
The Retroid 2S that was recently released has analog triggers, I believe. It can handle some GC emulation!
Not really. Not many games take advantage of it, and most people who would buy this kinda device probably already have a Switch and can just play the remaster.
I like the gameboy shaped emulator devices. I'm still rocking the Miyoo Mini plus.
Yup, that is my GBC / GBA / SNES player that works perfectly.
What handheld would you recommend that plays ps2 games flawlessly and like n64 and Dreamcast ? Looking to get my first one
I like my rg35xx. I have a ps2 and gamecube that I play on a tiny crt at home. So I just enjoy taking the rg35xx to work to play on my breaks with the older games that are more pick up and play style.
Still using my 351v but defo upgrading to this
I just got pocket 2s and am also using daijisho. Such a great front end!
Bob if if swipe down from the top you can find game mode and it loads different
I love your look. Weird request. Can we get a video of you in front of a fireplace doing a review :D.
The rumor ive heard as to why these sd cards are coming with very specifically mario and pokemon-less lobraries is because those IP's are the ones nintendo most closely monitors for legal action.
I shudder to think about how much money nintendo, sega and sony could make by making a storefront and selling the roms of their old, no longer supported titles for $1-$5 for people to use on emulators. It wpuld have its issues, but would have the same kind of effect that steam has had on PC game piracy. I like supporting the creator when i can, and buying a used worn out pokemon emerald cartridge on ebay is not that, nor do i think nintendo charges a fair price for many of their switch ports (though i do buy some)
Charge a reasonable price and make it more convenient than piracy, and piracy basically goes away. Gabe newell was totally right.
theres so many of these things i have no idea where to even start when looking to buy one
I ended up paying for Reset Collection, it’s one of the most amazing front ends there are, and it can scrape all my mame games which no other front end could do
I'm interested in how they work as retro consoles. I know some plug in to tv's but can I use a wireless controller? NES style? Can I save or change games with the wireless controller? I can't with NES controllers on Super console X. I guess there's not enough buttons for RetroArch
I’m probably asking for this for Christmas in the gray gameboy color
Hope there is more support for this thing and there are some updates to make it run PS2 even better.
I noticed none of Anbernic's T618 devices have HDMI-out. Is this going to be the new normal going forward?
About to dive into the retro hand held world with the xx plus very excited
I wish some company would make a good Square-ish Screen with Joy Con like controllers that can be used also un vertical so one can enjoy most Game formats

Did you not use the anbernic frontend that comes on the device? You just press the button on the left
I LOVE the purple. I am getting Atomic Purple memories again. You chose wisely my good sir. 👍 I saw you playing Perfect Dark. How is that in particular?
Looks interesting, but I'll stick to the retroid flip. Love it!
Nice review, have u tried powkiddy x28?
thanks for the update wulff, but i would also mention that aethersx2 was recently sabatoged by the creator so you should really tell people to either use an older version of it or to update the program to nethersx2.
i prefer the form factor of the rp3+, looks more comfy, the shoulder buttons of this new handheld looks uncomfortable
What's the size comparison between this and the analogue pocket?
ooh i think this might be the emulation hand held ima be getting for my first one !!
i've noticed that an odin lite is less than 200USD, would you go an anbernic
etro over this is similar price?
On your Recommendation I think I will pick this up.
Bob does the best emulator device reviews by far.
Nah, taki udon or retro game corps. Very in depth very fast. Taki lives in China and works with some of these "companies" on occasion, and then openly shit talks them when they don't listen to his pro-consumer advice
And Zim does the best acting in the commercials #wulffdendad
Bob does great retro reviews and has his own style. Most in depth Retrogamecorps. Most behind the scenes how we got here reviews Taki.
I'm new to all this. Want to get a retro handheld but don't know where to begin! Where can I get roms from? Any guidance would be much appreciated.
Great video. Can you give us your input on the Microsoft duo 1 for 3ds emulation and emulation compatibles? Thank you
you should test android games like slay the spire, gta games, AM2R and other neet stuff like that. I always wonder how these handhelds would run those
9:18 that definitely doesn't look like 4:3, it looks stretched (you can see black bars at the top and bottom).
The reason for it looking odd is because Yoshi's Island is technically 8:7 aspect ratio. Some devs adjusted the resolution of their games for 4:3 while others left it at the native resolution for the SNES (256x224).
I debated getting this as my first retro handheld (I've had some Nintendo systems) I ended up getting a RG353V, because I found a good deal on it and I wanted to spend less money to make sure I really actually need a dedicated handheld over just using my fairly powerful phone.
What is the thing added in where you can see all your roms as the front end?
im looking to buy my first retro handheld but theres so much choice i dont know where to start what would be the top 5 2023
Dunno why I keep watching these, I already have two handhelds.
15:42-16:02 That's wise advice from a good teacher.....although I can tell he never looked at the mortgage they would've pulled out in order to pay for that newer, shiny device.
But still wise advice.
Coming from a used tech buyer and seller who buys the older crap for cheap yet still gets it running to use free, open source programs to run all that nice shat and spat.
Bobby Wobby time, aww yeah
I have the rg35xx and im looking at getting the 405m but i want to purchase right one, the one with some gamecube zelda games stock cough *windwa..* any way you can provide what zelda games come stock on 405m and where to buy to make sure its stocked im not emu shavvy thx
Hopefully one day these handheld companies release something with 6 face buttons.
N64, 6-button Genesis, Saturn, and more options for GameCube and PlayStation mapping would be killer.

6:55 subbed. LOL ...
Id be curious to know if these are just Switch joysticks and could be replaced with Gulikit Hall effect joysticks...
It's going to be hard for anything to do DS/3DS just for the fact it's two screens. How long do you think it'll be till someone just makes a two-screen retro console?
That DBZ game you played seems to be one of the Japanese versions of the Budokai games
hey Bob will you review the powkiddy RGB 30? its been getting a lot of attention lately.
