    Liking this style of heater! A few suggestions that may increase your efficiency---route your exhaust through some thermal mass to help retain the heat you're currently venting to the outside. Not sure if that would fit your space....or druthers from your family members, but it'd help balance out the heat so you don't get large indoor temp variations. Also, you could try adding 3 inch ducting to one side of your feed tube to provide outside air for combustion. While it's drafting, the stove is going to pull combustion air from wherever it can. Right now, it's pulling from the interior of your house, which is going to also pull cold outside air from anywhere it can, thus making your house cooler. Of course, adding ducting to the outside may not be possible depending on where your heater is located.

      Where it is sitting now... in the middle of the kitchen, those modifications are not possible. However, the plan is eventually move it to the living room, and do, exactly that!

    I had a Wiseway pellet fueled Z shaped rocket stove. Gravity feed, no auger, hence no electricity required, but it can only burn pellets. I loved it, but it was temperamental. Air, pellet lots, and who's tending the fire played a role in how it worked.
    The first thing I did was fire it up outdoors to burn the coatings off. Once installed, it was glorious, until I got a call from home telling me the house was full of smoke. Being mechanically inclined helps with the learning curve.
    It heated our house like nothing else could. I cooked potatoes in the Z crotch. The hopper held a 40 lb bag of pellets, so you could walk away from it until it over heated the hopper and started to smoke out the house again. (Mine was their first model. The company changed hands and they may have solved the early glitches by now.)
    But now it's time to replace it, and I want the option of burning more than just pellets. I'll look into this one. If the chimney draft and air intake can be tweaked to make it work, it may be just the ticket for me.

      I am by no means an expert, and still very new to the Liberator Rocket Heater.
      I have mostly burned pellets in it. It holds a 40lb bag and no electricity required.
      I like that I can send the kids through the area picking up twigs, throw them in a lowes bucket, and burn those too.
      I roasted some ground acorns in a cast iron skillet on top of it, and am drinking the acorns coffee now as the Rocket Heater Roars in the background.
      Also, it's made in the US... thats a huge selling point for me

    • @betty_efn_white8136
      @betty_efn_white8136 2 года назад +2

      I too had a wiseway original model. once the US stove company took it over they added latches to the pellet hopper with gaskets and the downspout shoot from the hopper so as to stop the smoking issue. it was great but you had to babysit it a lot. I work 16-19hr shifts so it could only be left on Low when I was at work. my wife hardly ever touched it. I like the idea of this liberator bc you can burn pellets when you want. or sticks and twigs. Also instead of buying full cords of fire wood. you could easily order a much cheaper dump load of slab wood. and just split it to smaller pieces that will burn in this stove. seems like a good money saver. I might put one of these in my basement when I finish it

      I’d love to know how it works for you guys, I got one as well and trying to work out the kinks. Mine occasionally will burp smoke out the pellet hopper, they can plug, and the tube at least for me acts like a bit of a chimney. That being said, it’s not super cold yet so I expect the draft to improve. Thing throws the heat though!!! My workaround for the clog/smoke is to cut off maybe 75% of the side intakes to force air to pull through the pellet bed for cooling. Seems totally fine in the configuration. Again, may improve when the draft does.

    • @Hero4Hire4
      @Hero4Hire4 Год назад

      You have to build a mass to route the exhaust through.

  • @katiebea9258
    @katiebea9258 2 года назад +2

    May I recommend that you put (at least) two magnetic thermometers on the stove. One on your stack about a foot from top of stove and one on the barrel itself. Unless there is a "baffling"/ Russian-style "switchback" system (or other form of heatsink) inside the barrel, THAT stove, like ALL rocket stoves without some form of "mass" to STORE the heat is just wasting a HUGE amount of potential right out the chimney. The two gauges will tell you IF you are losing a significant amount of heat out the chimney. I hesitated to comment this negatively as I try NOT to "burst bubbles" generally. There ARE accessories to a chimney that CAN help you recover that heat loss IF you see that is the situation; in-line blower boxes installed in the chimney about two feet up, for example.
    I was looking at rocket stoves for over two years and didn't go that direction because I have no basement ... Ideally, I would put that stove in a basement, route the "environmentally cleaned", but still VERY hot, exhaust through a "cob mass" on the first floor, and then vent it out the roof.
    I went with a small SOAPSTONED firebox, cast stove (hate that it's a cat) and am praying/hoping I can get it to function well and long term WITHOUT multiple CAT-replacement issues. I will gladly "eat my words" at the end our "first burn season" with our two new stoves in a friendly competition. PLEASE stay in contact so we all can hear your experience as this IS the first rocket stove that I have heard of that passed FedSpecs.
    May Rocky burn well for you and Soapy for me.

    I got mine a month ago. Super frustrating lighting it. It always backsmokes into the house. Once it gets going, it is awesome, but my house is starting to smell like smoke from the back smoking. It runs around 700 degrees when going. The support from the company is awesome. Brady is awesome. But they haven't been able to offer a solution to getting it started. Super frustrating as my wife is not happy I spent 2500 on a heating source that is smoking up our house. And they don't take returns, so beware.

    • @Heckerfamilyhomestead
      @Heckerfamilyhomestead  8 месяцев назад

      I was going to make another video addressing this very issue! What I have found that helps is I take a few pellets, like a handfull, light them, then push them back. Then place a few more pellets with the wood. The pellets in the drum seem to get it going to where I dont have issues. But every now and again it will smoke. The worst culprut is the door. Sometimes I will add a twig or paper and it is too close to the door and smoke comes pouring out the door.
      I wish there was a way to 'close the top' when lighting it. I feel like this would reduce the smoking issues.

    What's the larger wood for? If you use small wood/twigs as you would with a rocket stove to cook on, how often are you feeding it to keep a fire going? I ask this because we built our own brick double burner rocket stove on the patio 2 yrs ago and it is a continuous chore of feeding small wood to keep the strong fire, but we do love it, it cooks great, better than any gas grill out there.

    • @Heckerfamilyhomestead
      @Heckerfamilyhomestead  2 года назад +1

      The larger wood is left over from a large cast iron stove that was here. Eventually I will chop those up in to smaller pieces.
      So far, I have been primarily using pellets. But a few times we burned some smaller branches. It heats up good for about 30-45 minutes and when I check on it, it's out. But the house is so warm I don't need to bother re-lighting it. I have a feeling during the winter it will need a reload every 30 minutes to keep it going all day when we are snowed in, but this will be my first winter so...we will see.

  • @paulferris2218

      Great analogy. As someone the had the chance to fly little Cesena's when I was about 13-14, I totally get it. Propeller planes have less in them to break or fail, are easier to learn to use for the lay person, cost less, and burn less fuel.
      What's nice about the Rocket Heater is it's efficiency when compared with fireplaces or typical cast iron stoves.
      Now with a little bit of snow on the ground in the morning, we are loving having it quickly heat our downstairs.
