    Should have mentioned getting a high flow exhaust. So many people over look it as a cooling mod cuz everyone assumes it's a power mod only but the faster your car can get the gases out the less heat it will transfer into the housings.

    Great list! Yes, removing the CAT will also aid greatly in reducing engine temps. At some point in the future I want to get the upgraded oil cooler kit. Apparently the stock oil coolers are not bad themselves, it's usually the oil cooler lines that provide some restriction. So for some it might be a good idea to just replace the lines. Was surprised u threw on hood venting, didn't actually think of that one, but it makes sense. Gets the heat out from the engine bae (ha, see what I did there?), and lets air flow better through. The license plate isn't actually that big of a problem. If you look closely, the front grill itself is mostly not perforated. Most of the air was designed to go from underneath the bumper (with the aid of the undertray). The undertray is actually angled to force that incoming air through the radiator. Unfortunately, I rarely know any RX-8 owners that still have the undertray XD

    • @Drivenbymadness
      @Drivenbymadness  6 лет назад +2

      Yup, i'm on board with you on the oil cooling kit. Just need santa to make a nice pay pal deposit next time :P Yup, the hood mod is very effective. i saw that bae, it came straight from the hood ( i also did something :P hahah ). The undertray can be bothersome, especially if you remove your bumper very often, like me. if you noticed i also dont have it installed atm :P The Euro licence plate is a bit restrictive, and the holes can always be perforated to increase efficency :)

    Thanks for the follow up on this topic. I would still recommend getting the Lo-Tek pod over the racing beat pod, as the Lo-tek is glued over the dashboard and the gauges will be always in your field of vision. With the racing beat you have to take your eyes off the road to monitor/check the temperature being shown by the gauges. Also, the Prosport gauges would be a lot better than the mechanical ones of the racing beat. OK, you will have a +/-1 additional variation of the readings but if you get the premium version you will also get an alarm function so that the gauges will inform you as soon as they detect the temperature goes close to the dangerous zone. At the end the Lo-Tekpod + Prosport gauges will be around 150-250 Euros cheaper than gettitng the racingbeat kit.

    • @Drivenbymadness
      @Drivenbymadness  6 лет назад

      I totally agree on the positioning of the gauges, very unpractical position if racing or concentrating on the road. I was looking at some aftermarket gauges, but never came upon Lo-tek. Does the lotek pod have a specific fittment for the rx8, or they just sell universal ones ? I was looking for pods, so if they can offer tailored ones, i would go for it.

    OTHER MODS TO CONSIDER:
    - ALUMINIUM UNDER TRAY (it doesn't sogg, like the plastic oem one)
    - FREE FLOWING EXHAUST (The faster your get the gases out, the less heat it will transfer into the housings)
    - ENLARGE VENTS ON THE PLASTIC WHEEL WELLS ( better cooling)

      Hey I loved the video. I am a current Corolla co-owner (it's my dad's) and im considering to buy a MazdaSpeed 3 over the summer.
      My 2 year plan is to daily the Mazdaspeed 3 over the winter, and an RX8 when my city's temperatures allow me (I live in Canada).
      Although I think the RX8 is a great stock sports car, the many quirks the car has need to be properly tuned for me to enjoy them.
      I'd like you to help me list the modifications I was thinking of doing on it:
      - I firstly wanted to change some of the suspension work, as well as the cooling tricks you demonstrated in the video (I legit was gonna do it anyways lol)
      - Secondly I wanted to mid-pipe or straight pipe the car depending on my budget and legalities
      - Thirdly was weight reduction, I was gonna notably replace the enterior's unecessary weight... I'm not sure what else could be done exactly but I'm not there yet so :/
      - Fourthly I wanted to rebuild a Renesis engine and give it a supercharging boost if it allows me... if not I was gonna swap to a 13B-REW or something...
      - Lastly I wanted to body kit the car a bit, a tasteful and useful back wing, tasteful bumpers with sidesquirts to go with... a nice little hood for the cooling the engine needs... The very last detail is the color, I want a matte black RX8 with bronze rims like the cool kids :)
      Can't wait to be Rotary Army!

      @shadogaming5905 6 лет назад

      i have been looking at an aluminium under tray for a while now, however for the time being my aftermarket front bumper, with larger front grill area and larger oil cooler holes, has a slot that actually holds the plastic under tray rather than having it held in solely by pins and screws

      @Maybe live great plan, really looking forward of having you on the rotary crew :D
      Coilovers will be a great addition to the rx8, as well as some cooling mods
      A de-cat is not legal in the majority of countries around the world, but people including my self still have them, and switch them with the cat before emissions ;)
      For weight reduction, you can remove oem seats and replace them with lightweight ones, take out compleately the rear seats, carbon fibre hood, carbon fibre boot, take away door pannels & speakers and i'm sure more can be found :P
      Don't bother supercharging or turbochargning the renesis. If you want power, swap the engine with a 1JZ OR 2jZ, you'll also get better fuel consumption.
      I like the bodykit idea, gotta make that ass bling :D

    I didn’t see you talk about the OIL COOLER thermostat replacement. Stock oil cooler thermostat doesn’t open till 200+F good video idea brother!

  • @cisjga
    @cisjga 6 лет назад +7

    Just to add to the radiator replacement. As the radiator is at an angle, the air flow does not go easily through the radiator. The radiator therefore has sponges around it so the air is forced through the radiator. Make sure you transfer all the sponges from the stock radiator to the new one. Never remove the undertray. The under tray along with the bottom sponge is what helps the air go through the radiator.
    I would not recommend moving the number plate from its location. The air gets to the radiator from the under tray. Behind the number plate is a solid piece of plastic, air cannot enter from there, so removing the number plate makes no difference.

    • @Drivenbymadness
      @Drivenbymadness  6 лет назад

      Great addition to the radiator topic, very useful info! A aluminium undertray is also a good addition to prevent the plastic one from sogging. As for the licence plate.... well, you can always drill holes on the grill, and the lower part of that solid plastic feels like it can be pulled away, at lease on my car. I'll see about that when ill be doing my mods in april. ( Ignition kit still working strong )

    • @cbremer83
      @cbremer83 6 лет назад

      You can also get metal undergrads. Extra helpful if you track the car. At high speeds the plastic one can flex and let air by. Mazdatrix carries one.

    • @LLLLuuuuKKKeeee
      @LLLLuuuuKKKeeee 6 лет назад +1

      No, the lower half of the grill is open and flows directly to the rad, only the top portion is blocked off because of the crash bar behind it. With those euro plates you’d definitely be blocking some flow.

    • @cisjga
      @cisjga 6 лет назад

      If you are cheap like me lol, you can cable tie the undertray to prevent sag at high speeds. If you have the plastic radiator, do not cable tie the undertray to it as this could damage the plastic tank.
      Here is the thinking behind the air flow as I understand it: The air enters from the bottom, trapped and forced (because of the undertray and the sponges) through the AC condensor, through the radiator (cooling the coolant) and then into the engine bay, thus also cooling the engine as well. Now here is the funky bit. The air is pushed up onto the engine cover that actually sends the air back down to the mid and rear part of the engine and then the air exits through the side plastic vents near the doors, I was also surprised to see that those air vents are not for show but do actually have a purpose. With the fans on and idling you can confirm this by putting your hand near the vents and you will feel hot air coming out of them. So logically, another cooling must should be that we don't drive without the engine cover.
      So with all the above, I am not sure that moving the number plate will actually help or hinder anything. I would however chose not to hinder the flow going into the undertray.

    Instead of hacking up your loom to change the temperature at which thr fan starts, get yourself a MazdaEdit licence, you will be able to change that preference in the Ecu and if you have SOHN you will be able to increase the oil injection rate and with your LS injection kit you'll be able to increase the dwell time and utilize the coil potential resulting in a stronger spark and better ignition which will increase your HP

      Thanks man :) yeah, if i had the money i would install every single one of them. For street use i would recommend to start with the cooling additive and fan kit, as it's the easiest to install. for reliability, the expansion tank is a good mod. If you have the budget go for the koyo radiator with coolant lines or if you're really packin', install the gauges. Never skip maintenance, every 2 years flush your coolant. That way you'll always get the best out of it :)

    do not use coolant addetives like purple ice. they usally contain 2-ethylhexanoate (most coolants contain 2-eha btw) it is highly debated wheter or not 2-eha eats away at the seals in a rx8. But to be on the safe side you should use a coolant without 2-eha. Such as the mazda fl22 (not fl22 complaint. but specificlly the mazda branded fl22)

    My Rx8 is almost 14 years old, with no rebuild and 183.000 km odo and without any modifications on. No premix also.
    But, this summer the radiator broke (replaced with a Koyo) and after that I had a broken expansion tank (replaced with the a new OEM). Yesterday my heat radiator broke too and cabin (passenger's side) became a pool with antifreeze liquid.
    The sad thing is there is only OEM heat radiator which costs almost 1.000 euros or I can get a used one. I have bridged the pipes so I can run the car but there will be no heat in the cabin.

    Great vid but there is one thing that is not 100% accurate. The racing beat gauge kit is not really compatible with S2 cars. The plate that goes between the oil filter and the engine will not work on an S2. The S2 has the filter under the engine and that plate will not fit. The gauge pod and coolant gauge work fine, but oil pressure and temp gauges are not as easy to add as on the S1.

    • @Drivenbymadness
      @Drivenbymadness  4 года назад

      Thanks man! Actually leave it where it is, because the bottom of the bumper is the main intake for cooling. The middle grill is 80% blocked, so leaving the licence plate there is the best option :)

      Tommy Quintana I just had this code last week. I replaced my ignition coils and spark plugs. That sort of fixed it. But then I replaced the mass air flow sensor and the issue went away. The 2nd rotor misfire is the housing closest to the windshield.

    • @gamingmadesimple5510
      @gamingmadesimple5510 6 лет назад

      Tommy Quintana get some mass air sensor cleaner and do that first to see if it helps. It's only 8 bucks at auto parts store. If you still have it pull your plugs and check condition and gap. Then check the coils for strength of output. .. all these things can be done for cheap or free and will narrow it down to what the actual problem is. There are tons of videos on you tube for all that I mentioned as well that will walk you through step by step

  • @mrawesomelemons

    Awesome list but wow these mods are expensive. Also, my front grill is not a grill. It's just plastic with a mesh design. So my plate isn't blocking off anything.

      @Drivenbymadness  6 лет назад

      Yeah... i need to get me a shugga daddy :P Same here, but screw it, drill holes in it. Or carefully cut out the blocked holes. Would you recommend a S1 or a S2 to a first time RX8 buyer? Currently looking at a R3, what sort of improvements do you recommend for consistent lapping?

    • @Drivenbymadness
      @Drivenbymadness  6 лет назад

      If you have money get S2 R3, or alternatively you can get a S1 and mod it so that it is as reliable as the S2. A reference video can be 10 way to make your rx8 more reliable: ruclips.net/video/-pLkSABRxHk/видео.html&t

    • @TheSaint491
      @TheSaint491 6 лет назад

      Driven by madness very good. How many upgrades do you recommend from your list for a s2 r3? I'm looking at brakes and cooling predominantly. Also, do I have to premix with an S2, or am I okay not to as long as I use semi synthetic or mineral oils? I ask because of the third oil injector the s2 has, I presume it somewhat eliminates the need to premix.

    • @Drivenbymadness
      @Drivenbymadness  6 лет назад

      The S2 has better lubrication due to the extra oil injector, so you don't necessarily have to premix.
      S2 has a better radiator, but not as good as koyo. the Electric Fan kit would be a great add on, then the vented hood would help with faster air circulation, oil cooling fans are also very good, also the royal purple additive does it's job :) Oh yeah, and definitely temperature gauges. I'm gonna do an install video of another version that is more driver friendly, so stick around :)

      Driven by madness temp gauges are especially important, agreed. Quite like these ones, as they suit the look of the cluster dials, and are in a good glance position. www.vividracing.com/mazdaspeed-oil-pressure-oilwater-temp-gauges-mazda-rx8-0411-p-150746085.html

    Watching your videos makes me afraid of damaging my rx8 because it's stock 10 years now and just because I haven't done anything about cooling or 2 stroke oil in the gas tank etc I think that i will damage it

    • @Drivenbymadness
      @Drivenbymadness  6 лет назад

      If you maintained it regularly oil change every 5000km and coolant flush every 2 years, you should be good. This mods make the rx8 work more efficient and last longer, but even if it's stock it will last, but you have to stick to a rigid maintenance schedule :)

    • @Drivenbymadness
      @Drivenbymadness  6 лет назад

      I thought the same thing when i first saw it :P the price is actually pretty reasonable once you take into consideration the cost of quality gauges which is around 150$ ( 450$) + oil adapter 95$ + coolant adapter 60$ + mount it comes arount that price. Some other kits are even more expensive. Don't buy cheap 5$ gauges, as they will be noisy, fragile and inaccurate :)
