MAJOR eczema breakout two years ago, never went away. Depression. Hair loss. Anxiety. Paranoia. Recently went on an elimination diet...eating only bone broth, meat, broccoli, cauliflower. Eczema went away. As an experiment I ate some peanut butter (lectins)...the nightmare started again. Lectins HAVE TO BE what my body is freaking out about.

5:25 wanted to make some clarifications relating to the food list. I know that the dairy products say A1 specifically, but dairy is still ok, because goat cheese, milk, and yogurt, are made from casein A2. Which doesn’t have lectins. Also, when it comes to rice, ( sorry, corn cannot be saved. ) there is a way you can drastically remove the WGA from the wheat, by cooking it thoroughly, ( pressure cooking.) then refrigerating it. This is how you create resistant starches. Same goes for legumes. Even peanuts, but only the raw ones, not peanut snacks. Now while sadly the entire squash family is off limits, there are 2 nightshades that can be saved. The potato, and the tomato. The tomato can be eaten by removing the skin via a boiling technique. ( it should be on RUclips,) and certain types of potatoes, ( not including russet ) are resistant starches. Now I know this diet seems highly restricting, but it really isn’t. If you want more info, I suggest reading both the plant, and longevity paradox for more information.

Just to clarify, the lectin avoidance diet is meant for those who are dealing with health issues that could be caused by lectins, such as autoimmune diseases. If you're otherwise healthy, it is not advisable to go on a strict lectin avoidance diet, although you might experiment with excluding one or several lectin foods at a time if you have a minor condition such as acne. Either way I recommend doing your research on this topic (google autoimmune protocol) and consulting with your physician before making any drastic changes to your diet.

After having reading the book is that, as all fad diets, you are stuck by eating a low diversity diet. Lectins are definitely bad for us but to what extent ? Elimination Diets might lead to other issues as you miss nutrients from the plants (like lycopen from tomatoes).

On the Genius Life podcast, Stephen Gundry at the 31m mark, mentions how certain foods (ex. chicory) promote the beneficial bacteria that lines the gut.. and as it eats the mucus, it causes more of the mucus to be produced?! Same. A few weeks ago I watched a video interview of a doctor who claimed lectins are pretty much the end all be all cause of human immune dysfunction. I believe they do have an effect, but feel like it's blown out of proportion and we still have a lot to learn about it. I think certain lectins affect some people much more than others, and I think there are ways of counteracting most of the negative effects of lectins that haven't been investigated or talked about enough yet.

    • @MindDrip
      @MindDrip  6 лет назад +6

It is my understanding that different people are sensitive to different lectins - either due to a poor gut health brought on by modern inventions such as those listed in the video, or due to the fact that their ancestors just haven't been exposed to them long enough to develop the proper microbiome and immune system to handle those specific lectins. Although it seems like Dr. Gundry sometimes advocates avoiding all problematic lectins, the book makes it clear that it's not about that, but rather figuring out which specific lectins are causing you issues, and avoiding them - in which the first step can be to avoid all the problematic lectins, before re-introducing them one at a time. Some lectins that one may be sensitive to initially, can actually be tolerable once you heal your gut. In fact, Gundry even recommends beans for those who can tolerate them.
I knew this was a slightly controversial topic, but I really found the book to be incredibly interesting, so I decided to summarize it in a way to present my own understanding of the topic. The book faced quite a bit of opposition, especially by vegans, who decided to trash it based on the sole fact that it suggests plant foods can be harmful. From what I've noticed, many of them are speaking out against it without having delved deeper into the topic, or even having read Gundry's book. The link Mr. X provided is by far the most balanced critique of the book I've seen, and offers some interesting counterarguments. I can't guarantee that everything in this video will pass the test of time, but I feel it's worth sharing and contributing to our ongoing understanding of nutrition and diet related illnesses. Especially when it can seriously improve people's lives. There is no doubt that tons of people have tried this approach and successfully managed their conditions with it. You can google autoimmune protocol, which is a diet almost identical to Dr Gundry's, and which has helped many people struggling with autoimmune conditions. There's also a Plant Paradox diet support group on facebook which is filled with people who can attest to its validity.

Basically I was raised consuming it often, at least twice a week. Then I converted to Islam and I stopped eating it (Muslims and Jews don't eat this meat), so my gut was completely cleaned from it. Since I live in a European country, it's quite common to find this meat hidden in other products or dishes, so it happened a few times that I accidentally ate it again, and every time I ate it I had stomach ache and strong diarrhea within 60 minutes after consumption.

FOCUSING ON WHAT I CAN EAT:
Foods for people who wish to limit their lectin intake:
    pasture-raised meats
    A2 milk
    sweet potatoes
leafy, green vegetables, spinach, mint, lemon, cabbage
    cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli
    Brussels sprouts
    asparagus
    garlic
    onion
    celery
    mushrooms
    avocado
olives or extra virgin olive oil
    okra
    red wine
    Nopales
    blueberries (in season)
Limit PEELED: apples, cucumbers, zucchini, de-seeded in season fruits/veggies
AVOID FOODS: corn, A1 milk, corn-fed animal meat, bell peppers, grains, beans, lentils, squash. Lectins are most potent in their raw state. Therefore, cooking lectin-rich foods at high temperatures can dramatically reduce their content. Boiling or stewing legumes gets rid of almost all of the lectin content.

This does explain the change much better than the non proven evolutionary atheist view.

My background research shows that Steven R. Gundry's results are not based on sound studies. In most cases, scientific studies reliably demonstrate the opposite of his theories. Sorry to say. As an educated academic, Mr. Gundry should know how to evaluate scientific results.

@@MindDrip I had elaborated a little more. For some reason, my comments disappeared (I tried 3 times). Perhaps a bad internet connection. Point is: Large scale studies demonstrate that diets with nuts, legumes and fiber are super healthy for average people. On the other hand, you certainly have a point about the context. I am not here to proclaim "the truth". I don't know enough anyway. Just wanted to point out that scientific consent does not agree with Gundry in a couple of points. @@HartmutGoetze Again you say nuts and fiber like he condemns them, which is not the case. Did you read my last comment? It sounds like you have nothing honestly if you can't even point to anything except for a google search.
If you're basing your research on some random sites that show up in google, you should know that many hardcore vegans with extreme biases went out of their way to bash Gundry for claiming that certain plant foods can be unhealthy for certain individuals. Ironically some of the critics, such as Michael Gregor, a period after critizing Gundry and his book, himself wrote an article about the potential negative health consequences of lectins.
