I quite liked the game. It was not great. It had many flaws. Not as great as the main games. But it showed that with a bit of love even a spin-off might work. Of course that is likely also why is not remembered that much since it was just a decent game. Great games become legendary. And bad game can become even more so. But OK games tend to just be remembered by a few of us. ^_^
I still own the original CD's for the original Westwood C&C games. I can still play them whenever I wish. So, EA can kiss my @$$. I still have my original Fallout 1 & 2 discs. My original Fallout is from the initial run with only 100 days to recover the water chip. I have all my discs for all my old games. Many of them are still always installed on my HDD. When DVD and Blu ray came out I was hoping to buy games on those formats. Yet, now all we get is a download. This video really hit home for me. I refuse to play pay to win games, MMO's or any of that micro-transaction crap. I play the same kinds of single player RPG games in both linear story and open world formats that I always have. Except now I can't play them without connecting to the internet. This has allowed me to play with a host of fun mods. So, I am not complaining. I can still buy a copy of a game and play that game by myself, me against the machine. That's fine as long as the grid remains stable. However, when the sh*t finally hits the fan and the power goes dead along with the internet and cell service, I'll be charging my HP laptop with a solar cell and reverting back to Fallout, Fallout 2, Diablo 2, Doom 3, Half Life, Ages of Empires and....... Command and Conquer!
You probably won't be. HP quality is shit, your laptop will break long before shit finally hits the fan. Hell, it probably broke in the 3 months since you wrote this comment.
Just this week I received my Red Alert 1 (big box) and Tiberian Sun + Firestorm (4 CDs). The s**t is more likely to hit the fan just for the game industry - we will still have electricity, we just won’t have things like Steam and new game releases. That’s where our survival stashes come into play :D

It's not just PC franchises that suffer under them. A company that used to make good licensed tie ins where most failed, now just poisons everything good it touches.
It says a lot when a huge C&C fan wants their favourite series to stay dead. I agree with what is said in the video and that is, EA has killed an amazing game and does not care at all. Good job EA for pissing off many fans of the series.
I don't want it to stay dead. I just want someone else to handle the IP. Clearly EA is incapable of competently managing development of c&c (or any game for that matter nowadays)
No dice. EA cancelled it and is closing the company because it doesn’t meet their “high standards” (read: they couldn’t figure our how to make you keep re-buying the same loot boxes after you had already rolled the key that unlocked dating your “best girl”)
Just few days ago installed generals from first decade just to see it doesn't work on win7 so had to buy c&c ultimate to be able to play generals ones again. Ea, you win this time.
I've never heard someone so pissed yet so restrained. You are right, though. EA is the Tiberium of video game companies: smashes in like a meteor, starts infecting local wild life, and then begins proton latticing everything until nothing is left.
But Tiberium has redeeming qualities like still being useful for making good stuff! Don't insult the beautiful crystals like that. Nod has no mercy for people who insult Tiberium.
I had stories, and I mean stories about playing C&C back in the 90's with my best friends over dial up 14.4 modems..... it's such a shame that this IP has fallen so insanely hard. Thank you for attempting to educate the importance that C&C had on games to come.
IT ISN'T SAD. IT IS BUSINESS. This is what happens when companies become too big. Too many shareholders to answer to. It compromises everything. 10 years ago EA wasn't a name to be ashamed of. In 2019 it is. Things change yo.
@@BoydTheMilkmanX u can thank the day 1 fiasco of battlefront EA ll back in November 2017, n if that situation didn't occur, everyone would've trust EA by now just like they were over a decade ago when a AAA quality game from EA like Battlefield, C&C or NFS people would be super excitedfir their games 10 years ago, but now due to a low trust feeling to the publisher, now it's the opposite n the only way the majority will like EA ever again is their "Wake Up Call" that'll make everyone trust them again like in the past, but for that "Wake Up Call" to occur is so far unknown atm :l

I love how every time I think the video is about to be over it gets EVEN worse :D I've been a C&C (RA2, RA3, Generals and Kane's Wrath) fan for.. upwards of 17 years now. EA punched me in the gut so many times that watching this video only made me smile and shed a tear. Thank you for bringing back some nostalgia. That's all I can say.
Dude, i feel your pain. The franchise i also grew up with, grinded into the trashbin. I hope still it may eventually return to its glory. As Kane and Nod keept coming back from presumed death, maybe this franchise will manage this too
@@PolishHussar04 YUP Though it seems SOMEONE at EA or petroglyph understands that CnC can only get good again without EA interference. Also have you seen the little vid of joseph Kugan? It may just have been a teaser for the next remaster. I am hopeful!
Great video^^ Imagine a proper C&C with 3-6 years of development from a publisher that is not entirely incompetent. What a shame that we'll never get that :/
I would love to see CD Project Red to reclaim the franchise ... Even considering they have no engine for an rts or experience in building one. But still they pour heart blood into their games and that alone would be enough to make c&c great again.
Watching this in the context of Battlefield V has me seriously worried. Thanks for taking the time to put together this amazing write-up of the history of C&C. Came here through the "What is Tiberium" video, which blew my mind, being fairly young while playing the C&C games as a kid I had no idea about the intricacies and amazing story telling that was going on in those games. You earned yourself a new subscriber and I will definitely be recommending your videos to all the people who grew up with these games. Keep up the excellent work!
Been watching a lot of C&C videos the last couple of days. This is the most spot on of my opinion I’ve ever heard from another person. I hate how Ea eats up studios then spits them in the bin. I’ve not bought a EA game for over 6 years.
The Generals Zero Hour mod Rise of the Reds is the closest thing we got to Command and Conquer Generals 2. Personally, it might as well be Generals 2. When it comes to official games, Command and Conquer Red Alert 3 is the last good Command and Conquer game.
New life goal: Start a game making studio, get a lot of money, quality games and fans, buy the entire C&C license from EA, hire some of the original creators, THEN try to continue the franchise.
If you ever manage to do that I would like to pitch a game idea: I know it's primarily a RTS franchise but I think a Fallout3/Stalker style RPG as a member of the Forgotten surviving in a yellow zone bordering a red one would work quite nicely (Timeframe:between Tiberian sun and Tiberium wars). Bonus: The player as a member of the Forgotten already has an inbuild healing mechanic(tiberium exposure).
Well... What if we just make a new RTS Just make the king of austuria-hungary dont die Let the austurian artist to to the fine arts school And for some reason no one decides to put plutonium in a sphare of explosives and invent the nuke
EA is like tiberium: it mutates and kills and eats everything around it, just without the benefit of being a powerful energy source or valuable resource. Bring out the sonic cannons!
You know I remember like 8 years ago thinking about becoming a game Dev and looked into buying Command and Conquer from EA which they actually had a website that you could actually request to buy Titles from them, but I realized I knew nothing about making games and probably couldn't afford to do such a thing
Yeah, I concluded years ago the only way I'll enjoy C&C now is through absolutely amazing mods for older games, or hell, fan remakes. Think Mental Omega, Twisted Insurrection, C&C Shockwave for Generals Zero Hour and off course Renegade X and OpenRA.
Jesus Christ man, I'm so sorry for your loss. The second addendum had me gawping at the screen in disbelief. It's like that "he's already dead!" Simpsons meme, they keep kicking c&c even though it is on the ground unconscious.
You deserve more views. This was easily as good or better than many videos from channels 100 times bigger than yours. Always a good sign when 29 minutes just fly by and you still dont want it to end. (Except wie might want C&C to end)
With C&C remasters on the way I am at least glad that many of the original developers from Westwood Studios, and some of the most influential members of the original Command & Conquer development team are working on it
It makes me somewhat sad that C&C3 was this good with this short of a development cycle. As for current day C&C, it lives through mods: Tiberian Insurrection, Mental Omega, Tiberian Essence and so forth. From EA we won't get anything good, so its up to the fans.
Watching the original part of this video feels like watching a beloved person die. Watsching the addendums feels like watching said beloved person being raised from the dead by a necromancer for the sole purpose of making money by ridiculing itself! Absolutely infuriating! Lets give ourselves some peace by agreeing that the real C&C is indeed in the hands of the fans. Many thanks to the devs of CnConline and openRA! You're doing Kane's work!
This ain't killing the messiah, this is shooting him, setting him on fire and then finishing him off with ravenous sodomy with a large chunk broken glass covered in ghost pepper juice.
Hehehehe. Love the ending on speaking about how the past can't be taken. Only for a little while till Remasters where announced.... Though to be fair for the remaster some bizzare choices where made, not in being weird. But that they where GOOD decisions that make me wonder who got to make that decision and why aren't they in charge of EA? Actually getting an RTS experienced external studio founded by former westwood devs that know how it's done, Getting the same graphics studio that helped Blizzard remaster Starcraft and displaying a hands-off approach vowing to leave petroglyph to handle everything and not get involved in monetization. I am cautiously and fearfully optimistic as it is the last remaining flicker of hope C&C has. The one tiny spark to show C&C still has a place. Though i am deadly afraid of what might come afterwards...
It may not have been a great game but I still would have loved to play Tiberium, for the same reason I loved Renegade and looked forward to SC: Ghosts.
@@emadpi7348 Same as guy above; grew up with C&C, but I've always liked the idea of taking an RTS and giving you the perspective of the soldiers as they fight, even more so if you could "possess" a single unit, and lead your forces that way.
I grew up on generals. Both the base and zero hour. I put so many hours into the mode where you fought the other generals. That was so much fun. Anyone know of other rts games that do that?
AL I knew it was challenge mode in the back of my head but I wasn’t sure. Yeah I know it’s a shame. I loved how antagonistic those damn generals where. It made that defeat so fucking sweet.
I've played cnc since I was 5 (over 20 years) and it's such a shame that to see that back in the day cnc was battling for #1 RTS with StarCraft and now we have, well what do we have now? It's only really the fans keeping it alive with mods and keeping the servers alive with the likes of revora since GameSpy went down, it pains me to say that cnc is pretty much dead.
@Ganjalf The Green I'm actually hopeful about this, this is coming from a realist/slight pessimist and I have a good feeling about these remasters with almost the entire original team working on them.
List of "EA Discards" that i know of (Feel free to add your own): The Sims: 1 and 2 are ok, Sims 3 is the best although there are some useless box expansions (I have all but sweet treats and diesel), Sims 4 is where the series went incredibly money milky, with packs that should have been merged with others, and let's not get started on the Spin-Offs. Command and Conquer: Went to hell, turned to a horrible chimera begging for death, lost all its spirit, is now actively throwing grenades at Blue Tiberium. Simcity: Came from a Nintendo console, was pretty good for a while (Societies was actually good because it had sandbox), then along rolled Simcity 2013 and it had so much useless DLC that Paradox rolled in with their franchise that until now had terrible games, made Cities: Skylines and took its entire community, then proceeded to add true, expansion pack style DLCs that actually changed the game and made it interesting. Spore: Existed, EA then Scar'd Maxis, Spore was then abandoned with its 3 expansions (one of which was promotional with Dr. Pepper, and only in the USA), then Darkspore was made, it sucked and died. The only thing we got out of this utter failure of a game was the Dark Injection mod. To sum it up, EA doesn't give two bothers about what happens to their games. EA should be shut down, and all its games given to *competent* developers.
Remember how I said I still firmly believe there’s a future for the franchise? Yeah. I had no idea half of these monstrosities were even conceived!!! Battle?! Red Alert Online?! RIVALS?!! As you said before. Command & Conquer belongs to the fans. I refuse to endorse the zombified carcass that EA considers to be. Command & Conquer. I hope EA eventually falls and these IPs are liberated from EAs money grubbing hands and given to a developer who genuinely loves and respects this franchise. Until then. We’ll continue to enjoy the series before Twilight. Thank you for making this video. I hope we can share a game sometime :)

You just showed up in my recommended somehow and I’m glad you did. I’ve watch all your videos concerning C&C and I loved all of them! I grew up with generals and zero hour. I played the classics like red alert and just C&C, but zero hour has always had a special place in my heart. Watching this video I totally understand how fans of the original C&C (not the spin offs) can feel screwed over and I share sentiments that tiberian twilight was a dumpster fire. I’ve heard they are making a remaster for C&C, though I loathe to think what ways they might screw that up as well. I’m still hopeful that if C&C remaster goes well they may make another generals but I won’t hold my breath. It is good to see that there are still people who remember this game since my generation has no idea what it is. Please keep up the good work!
I wish I could make a third addendum to this video, the Remasters are seemingly shaping up well, to the extent that I've progressed from cautiously optimistic to regular optimistic. Time will of course tell, but we may be in for something good! I've been holding off of talking about the Remasters until we see some footage, but the fortunes of C&C may finally be changing Thank you for watching, and for your kind comment!
I have a bit more information on why Renegade was made so poorly. Renegade originally was going to be created as a stealth game, much in the same light as MGS(although I do not know about the multiplayer aspect.) Some proof with that you can still play in the game is the cargo ship, which was definitely designed wit stealth in mind, and I'm pretty sure you can still play it as a stealth game for that one level. Closeish to release, EA gave the word that they wanted an FPS game, much to the dismay of the team. This happened all in the last 9 months of development, which is why the game is a buggy mess that was definitely rushed. If you take a look at the game's engine, it's not the fault of the engine by most means. If you download the W3D hub and take a look at the four games available(ECW, Interim Apex, Red Alert:A Path Beyond, and Tiberian Sun:Reborn), you'll see they're all made with quite a bit of a polish(except Reborn and IA, both have major balancing issues), and aren't subject to the many issues that Renegade is susceptible to(although many of them are subject to pushing the Renegade engine far more than what it is normally capable of since a lot of this is hardcoded.) For what it is though, Renegade is very much a miracle that we may never see again. Seeing a polished Renegade while still being the same game is impossible, and I think many fans know this. The closest to a polished Renegade we could probably get is MGS if you go the commando route.
I have more information. The chateau level still retains ALL of its stealth elements, enemies ignore silenced weapons, a C4 worls as a noise distraction, in many cutscenes Havoc is uncharacteristically stealthy(leading me to believe these are cutscenes that had Logan, the original protaginist, but were then rerendered with the only change being new models), and enemies have a conical detection, rather than a traditional sphere used in most FPS games. Theres a lot more(for instance, the many conversations between Nod soilders that snuck through the cutting room floor and laid dormant in the files,) but this is the stuff you can see leaked into the actual hame.
As a fan of the Generals and Red Alert series I really agree and understand the utter dogshit care that EA has given to our beloved Command and Conquer franchise. Now the name is an insult if it is ever brought up again by the forever hated EA. Keep up the great content you will surely reach for the stars if you keep this up.
This legit made me tear up, not only because of such a well made documentary of a video, but because EA killed and keeps adding insult to the injury to one of my favourite franchises.
As sad and as grim as to the nature of the video, I think you nailed literally what most longtime fans think at this point. I share your pain. Here’s hoping somehow the alleged remake somehow beats the odds and they don’t c*ck it up.
If I ever came up with an idea as good as Command & Conquer, I would license it to a major studio for development -- but only with the stipulation that I retain exclusive control over the right to actually attach the name of my idea to any products they developed, in perpetuity.
Never mind the fact ya have to unlock Nod in Rivals. Honestly amazed they didn't lock Nod behind a pay wall. Would love to see Paradox get a chance at reviving the franchise. I think they could do it justice. Also, great series ya don't see anymore that would make a good video, Destroy All Humans.
After watching your Dune video, your channel is fast becoming my favorite. Thanks for your contributions to the games journalism community.. Also, love your sense of humor when you called out the Harkokken saying, "At once! At once! At once! At once! At once! At once! At once! At once! Aat once!"😅😅
Thought it was about time to add it. A streamer showed it in their stream before playing the Remaster and I ended up seeing it again there, and upon rewatching, times really have changed since then. I'll always keep the video up unedited, but it was made with the assumption that nothing good will ever happen to the franchise again. Feels so very good to be proven wrong!
@@NoStringsPrd man, you just have some terrible luck. This video being outdated 2 times during production, and now when you said you don't want to see a new game ever again - they drop a remaster. That's impressive in it's own way.
16:04 This hits too close to home for me. I worked for a game company that had one successful title which made all the money, and the company just dwindled over the years as they keep milking that title with low quality content, while shifting resources to other projects that ended up being flops. The year I left they fired about half of the people in my studio.
This is how I see it: starting at Dune II, Westwood gradually made their RTS games better and better, culminating in their masterpiece Red Alert 2 (inc Yuri's Revenge). C&C Generals (inc Zero Hour) was arguably equally good, although a bit of a departure from Westwood's traditional RTS styling. After Zero Hour, it went downhill, fast. It even went downhill faster than it went uphill in the 1990's. EA's usurping and staff leaving to form Petroglyph was obviously the reason for this. Nevertheless, if EA/Petroglyph manage to remaster RA2 like TD and RA were remastered, we can have good reason to be optimistic for being able to play a modernised RA2 in the near future.
You cannot sell games with even the slightest hint of strategic effort to the masses because Timmy might get confused, unless you strip the game's main selling point of everything that makes it fun and make it as engaging to "play" as watching cars from a bridge. Sure, you may have fun watching, but it's more fun to have direct control of what's going on, but we can't have that because then Timmy might not grasp the concept of pressing more than 1 button every match.

Wow the gameplay footage of Tiberian Sun at 4:22 running in OpenRA looks incredible! The atmosphere of the environment with the camera out so far is amazing.
Oh that's actually the original Tib Sun, using the fan patches as provided by CnCNet, not the OpenRA mod. I love OpenRA, but I try to stick to the original games for footage as best I can
If you're interested, the best way to play Tib Dawn, Red Alert and Tib Sun is with the freeware versions from CnCNet.org. Also, use the CNCNZ guide for set up; cncnz.com/features/technical-support-help-guides/ Finally, go to the game directory and run the config .exe to set your resolution. For C&C and RA1, set the game res to a factor of your screen res, and set the stretch res to your screen res, and set OpenGL filter to nearest neighbour, that gives you sharp, chunky pixels. TS doesn't have this option in the config, but I think you can do the same by editing the ddraw.ini. Alternatively, get Lossless Scaling from Steam (only works on Windows 10, not Win7) and run the game windowed to get the sharp pixels. Any issues with graphics, particulary Tib Sun, use the tsconfig.exe and choose a different renderer. I know that all sounds like a lot, but just play around with the files in the game install directory I'm starting to think I should do a video on all this, it's simple to set up but it looks really unapproachable on the surface. Anyway, feel free to message if you need anything!
Having played the RA mobile game, and still having it installed on my Ipod, it's... Okay. It DOES play like a classic C&C, with the same build style as Pre-Liquidation games. It has an unusual mix of RA:2 and RA:3 units. With EoRS available through an expansion, now unpurchasable. It has the same resource collection style as RA:3, but without the collector moving back and forth. The Units are few, and and the hierarchy is clear. All in all, mediocre, but it's not too bad. It still FEEL's like C&C. At least to me anyway.
I bought all the C&C games for $20 in a bundle deal. I enjoy going back sometimes and playing. I had the original C&C on the Sega Saturn... used to play it for hours and hours, good times.
Renegade was so fun. I don't get the hate on that game, I played the shit out of that game, it was really fun! I still watch playthroughs of it sometimes here on youtube. In fact, I'm going to do so right now, actually. Also, awesome video!
Base building RTS seems like it is dead. I love the C&C story(until 4) and hope to see another someday. I wont hold my breath. However they are remastering the original Tiberium Dawn
I can't believe we are a few hours away from having the originals remade in beautiful 4k by the original developers at Petroglyph. EA hasn't quite killed it. Yet. There is hope
I actually had RA3’s mobile port. It was suprisingly decent. It even had a “lite” version. Speaking of which, what happened to “lite” versions of mobile games???
On a positive note Forged Battalion is a great game released a while ago that captures a whole lot of that C&C spirit. If i were to witness someone playing it without prior knowledge i would have thought it was the real thing, especially as it has the original composer doing the tracks. Check it out.
Baldur's Gate could be good to do maybe? Can I just say. C&C isn't the same without the brilliant bald guy who was production manager or something from C&C1. I've never seen a more entertaining none-actor. I literally cannot take my eyes off him when he's on screen. The best baddy ever. Masculine, yet shrewd. Pure kitsch, his performances add so much to the franchise. You cannot kill the messiah.

Please. I need more C&C. Especially with the original devs in the drivers seat, whooo boy.
Bonus: The player as a member of the Forgotten already has an inbuild healing mechanic(tiberium exposure).
this is possible, it just needs people to rally behind it. The CnC fan base as it stands is probably shrinking by the year

What if we just make a new RTS
Just make the king of austuria-hungary dont die
Let the austurian artist to to the fine arts school
And for some reason no one decides to put plutonium in a sphare of explosives and invent the nuke

The C&C Rivals game broke my heart. It was my favorite game franchise being stretched over the model of a generic do nothing mobile game.
EA is like tiberium: it mutates and kills and eats everything around it, just without the benefit of being a powerful energy source or valuable resource.

List of "EA Discards" that i know of (Feel free to add your own):
The Sims: 1 and 2 are ok, Sims 3 is the best although there are some useless box expansions (I have all but sweet treats and diesel), Sims 4 is where the series went incredibly money milky, with packs that should have been merged with others, and let's not get started on the Spin-Offs.

Well, it's April 2020, C&C Remake is scheduled for June and I'm very hopeful for it. :)

16:04 This hits too close to home for me. I worked for a game company that had one successful title which made all the money, and the company just dwindled over the years as they keep milking that title with low quality content, while shifting resources to other projects that ended up being flops. The year I left they fired about half of the people in my studio.
that tencent red alert mobile game is basically a mafia city reskin.
An amazing video and perfectly sums up how I feel too... seriously great work

Sure, you may have fun watching, but it's more fun to have direct control of what's going on, but we can't have that because then Timmy might not grasp the concept of pressing more than 1 button every match.
"Accessibility" Then here's $10 - $100 worth of "coins" to buy to speed that shit up too.
Suits know nothing about games, it shows over and over again
It could be done but the whole game would have to be just a tutorial.

I love OpenRA, but I try to stick to the original games for footage as best I can
@@NoStringsPrd Wow now I have to play through again! Oh darn!
If you're interested, the best way to play Tib Dawn, Red Alert and Tib Sun is with the freeware versions from CnCNet.org. Also, use the CNCNZ guide for set up; cncnz.com/features/technical-support-help-guides/
Finally, go to the game directory and run the config .exe to set your resolution. I know that all sounds like a lot, but just play around with the files in the game install directory
I'm starting to think I should do a video on all this, it's simple to set up but it looks really unapproachable on the surface.
"I didn't want to bash EA"
Problem: EA is one of the most bashable companies on Earth.
you're basically my spirit animal.
That Blizzard comparison by Greg Black didn't age so well...
this video just makes me sad, press F for our beloved c&c
I bought all the C&C games for $20 in a bundle deal. I enjoy going back sometimes and playing. I had the original C&C on the Sega Saturn... used to play it for hours and hours, good times.
C&C and Westwood's legacy is but a drop in the bucket for EA.
Sadly the series are dead, rest in peace C&C series, you've raised me good
Tiberium (FPS) could have been a good spin-off, but it was also cancelled.
I can't believe we are a few hours away from having the originals remade in beautiful 4k by the original developers at Petroglyph. EA hasn't quite killed it. Yet. There is hope
Update - the remaster is amazing
I actually had RA3’s mobile port. It was suprisingly decent. It even had a “lite” version. Speaking of which, what happened to “lite” versions of mobile games???
RA3 Had a mobile Port???
@@jimmyschwarz9075 Yup- at least on iOS. It was removed years and years ago- theres still footage of gameplay on youtube I think.
On a positive note Forged Battalion is a great game released a while ago that captures a whole lot of that C&C spirit. If i were to witness someone playing it without prior knowledge i would have thought it was the real thing, especially as it has the original composer doing the tracks. Check it out.
0:38 - Who's that? I've never seen her in a Command and Conquer game before.
I said what I said.
She was in a cut scene of one of the factions either when you won a match or lost I'm pretty sure. She was a spy or something I know that much.
We are going to have to act if we want to live in a different world.
