Discover Good Old Japan in Tochigi #3 | Gouhan-shiki (Rice Eating Ceremony) in Hokkouji
Following the handover ceremony of the festival duties at Myoken Shrine, the town guardian of Hokkouji, held every year on January 3rd, a ritual called "Gouhan-shiki" was performed.
The ritual involves two messengers of the gods, known as Yamabushi and Gouriki visiting the village and forcefully feeding rice to the people gathered, including the new and old festival representatives, local leaders, and the mayor. This ritual follows the tradition of Nikko Shugendo , and is believed to drive away impurities and bring good fortune to the community by allowing both gods and humans eat and drink together.
