Hi everybody, summer break is over and here is my newest improvisation over "Stella by Starlight", one of my favorite standards. The chord progression is a challenge for every jazz musician, a lot of chords changes so you really need an improvisation concept or you are lost. The backing track is only with double bass and straight 8ths jazz drums, I like this jazz trio set up. As always the transcription of this video is availabe on my website. Love your approach on this classic. And your observation, which might seem antithetical to improvisation but isn’t.. that you sometimes “need an improv concept (beforehand) or you are lost”. So insightful!
Wes Montgomery did also a lot preparation before he made records. Sometimes it's good to work on a concept, so the improvisation has more structure in it. I don't like to doodle around. But the basic of everything I do here on RUclips is to play freely over the standards and try different things out. All the best from Germany
