This video spoke to me. I am 79 and have been taking lessons for 9 months. I have memorized 15 chords. I have memorized the fret board, I have studied the Circle of Fifths, scales, triads you name it. But I can’t yet play a song. Seems like I have come into the guitar would through the back door. Thanks for the video. Maybe now I can move forward. Mike
This is fantastic! So glad you were able to connect some dots through our video. You'll get this kind of in-depth lesson curriculum through our program. We have an amazing Black Friday deal running until 12/3/2024 - guitartricks.com/special
Im 60 and agree with everything you said. I just started learning and found out I was more inclined to practice a song I love so I bought a Rolling Stones and Tom Petty songbook and having more fun while also learning basics
Nice video, thanks! You might want to mention GAS, Gear Acquisition Syndrome... as an adult I have discretion over my income in a way that kids or teens don't. I truly admire the craftsmanship and designs that go into guitars and gear of all types, but have to resist purchasing more $$ guitars, thinking that will make me a better player
What is the guitar you are holding in this video, so I purchase the same? Classic, Acoustic ? How much should I invest for a first guitar!? I am 50, and I am a fan of rock music but also classic music, so I would be very interested to start with a classic guitar...no clue actually what is the difference between acoustic and classic guitar.
Acoustic guitars are either nylon string or steel string. Steel string is used more in folk, country, rock, and popular styles of music. Nylon string is used more in classical music, flamenco, and Bossa Nova. Typically, the neck of a steel string is smaller and more comfortable, but the strings of a nylon string are softer and easier to press down. I would try some different kinds out at a local store and talk to a sales person! It's great for a beginner to start on Acoustic because all you need is the guitar and it will always sound the same! You also can't hide behind the effects and stuff. You get out of it exactly what you put in. Depending on your budget, you might want both an acoustic and an electric, especially if you like rock. It's really exciting to plug a guitar into an amplifier and hear that sound - it may motivate you and excite you. The guitar I have in this vide is a steel string acoustic (OM sized). Its made by Eastman Guitars in China.
Thank you, that was very helpful. I am a ukulele player and have just got my first guitar and can't wait to get started. However, it is a full size acoustic and it's huge compared to my concert uke and I'm having problems holding it comfortably as I'm only 5ft 2ins with short arms. Have I bought the wrong guitar?
Your first guitar, how exciting! Did you purchase in a guitar shop? It might be helpful to get a second opinion. If the guitar is truly too big for your reach, then going to a smaller guitar might be very helpful.
Yeah Man, I like a lot of others here i enjoy your teaching style and i'm an old guy, but i do like some of the technical stuff trying to refresh my memory and your a god-send for me anyway Thanks
Intelligence, discipline and pain threshold..... are the qualities required.........whether guitar, golf, boxing, engineering school or special forces.....success is part of simple universal rules.
I am not old. I am very old. In fact I have retired. I wanted something fun to do that was a challenge. Guitar was it. I have one thing many younger kids don't. Money. I brought a cheap guitar and struggled a lot. I went out and brought myself a nice Gretsch. It was worth it. Playing is easier and much more fun. Why make it harder than it has to be?
I started playing 3 years ago at 62 (and I started with GuitarTricks!). Finally starting to play barre chords and beginning the intermediate stage and I'm back with GT. Nope - I'm not a ringer. Just tried just about everything out there, including in-person lessons. But I need focus and step-by-step learning and GT fits the bill for me. Doing fingerstyle lessons and trying to learn 2-3 new songs each month. Looking forward to videos 2 & 3.🙂
i have been trying to learn for 13 years. i have a severe tbi. the struggle is i dont hear anything in my head. i dont remember rhythms or melodies. song structures. i love music. this started out thinking i could do this. but i was wrong. now is just trying to get my brain to work but that isnt happening either.
Learning to play by ear you would have to have a lot of your favorite music to play on hand. You just can't go out and start buying all this music that you want to learn how to play. And if you don't have a computer you can't just start downloading this music that you want to learn or go a order books on different artists either.
My big thing is I don't have my own space to practice, who am I bugging, I know what it is like to listen to a beginner trying to learn how to play a instrument and the mistakes that we make and I for one get embarrassed for making mistakes have no confidence and that is a real biggy for me and who am I bugging, even though they say it is OK I always think they are just being nice but deep down they are thinking here we go again he is practicing again plug your ears, those are my big ones.
I would love a set of exercise my fret hand (left hand). How to stretch and extend fingers to better reach all strings and set proper chord positions.
Thank you for the video suggestion!

Glad to hear it!
Great teaching unhurried and practical especially vocalising musical ideas then translating them onto the guitar fretboard
Much appreciated! Is there anything you'd like us to cover in a future video?

We agree, the only thing missing is dedication!

Thank you so much for sharing your experience!
My fingers are a lil bit shorter than others so what should I do?
Move your thumb lower behind the neck, elbow in, and maybe push elbow out a little - it works for me!
Good question....I would also like to know 🤔
We recommend the following: moving your wrist forward, buy a guitar with a thinner neck, and make sure you have perfect posture.

Learning to play by ear is definitely not an easy feat!
Started my journey 4 years ago and I think everything I try to play sounds like garbage....but still playing it
Everything improves with time, keep going!
You probably start to think o I will never get this ,or my fingers are killing me, there is so many chords, and on and on llol.
Your fingers will stop hurting with time. Definitely is painful at first, ouch!
To quote The Princess Bride, about [technocrat]:
"I don't think it means what you think it means."
Yeah an absolute beginner or older player with a little experience would even know the chords. This makes me feel like im not getting it at all.
Don't despair! Everyone learns differently. Keep at it and let us know how your practice goes.
I'm 55 please help i need to learn to pick faster

Don't let your fear of what others think make you stop playing!
I want to learn to play songs by note for note, I can't find lessons like that.
Hi Tuna, we have this feature available on our site.
Can’t you see. Lol
Other than it’s 2bar d. 1bar c. 1bar g. Lol
Thank you for your feedback
No screw that get an online lesson with music theory. Sure you can play a/out theory but you won’t know why your actually playing what your playing.
Aint ez at all. Ugh stuck at beginner forever
It takes time to learn these skills. Don't get discouraged. Keep at it and let us know how you progress.
Blah, blah, blah. A lot of words and nothing is said.
I was waiting for something to practice?.
It was how to practice. Listen first.
