Many of us do hail from that background, and our singing culture has in many ways enabled Oasis to exist. We hope to sustain and deepen this music making.

The microphones are too far back. The sound is poor.

Every project has its tensions. For us, things like mic placement come second to the choir's focus on and connection with the audience when making a live recording. Also, the sound for the full Hark! Ten Thousand video had real sound mastering while this one was just a few quick tweaks.

I am somewhat puzzled by the Oasis Chorale, as there is little information about it. Is it appears to be Mennonite-based, as it is more "modern" than Amish. Overall a beautiful rendition of the songs.

There certainly is a great deal of diversity in Mennonite groups and Oasis Chorale is delighted to have members from quite a few different streams of conservative Anabaptist people. You can learn a bit more about who we are by visiting our website: www.oasischorale.org

Anabaptist churches in general have a long tradition of congregational 4-part singing without accompanying instruments. You might know churches that follow an adult baptism (anabaptism) or "choosing to follow God as an adult" with the names Nazarene, Brethren, Mennonite, or United Zion. The Mennonite church was the original anabaptist church within this grouping, by the way. The Amish churches broke off from the Mennonite, but I know what you mean. (The Amish generally have church in a congregant's home rather than in a separate building. At least that's how it's done here in the Lancaster Colony). You'll notice that there are certain singers who have been with Oasis for many concert tours and years, while others only perform with Oasis for one concert tour. One principle that guides all anabaptists is that we seek to remain focused on God, and not to become too worldly that we forget our focus on Him. Congregational singing in our churches provides the trained and talented singers that join Oasis to sing in these concerts. The singers all learn their material individually before they come together for a few days to work on blending, diction, phrasing and other aspects of performance in a group. (At Neffsville Mennonite, we've been blessed to be able to host Oasis a couple of times that I can remember.). The group then goes out on tour for about a week, and then usually returns to the place where they practiced originally to finish working on their sound prior to making an official recorded album. I would very much recommend purchasing those albums and supporting Oasis as a patron. The singers donate their time and talent. It's their gift. And what a gift they make together! Praise be to God.
