    Hang on... how are you powering a 5 meter strip of 60 LED/meter WS2815 lights with a 12v 5A power supply? The BTF websites specs say that each led draws 0.3 watts of power and on a 5 meter strip thats 300 x 0.3 = 90 watts. Am I missing something? Are those actually 30 LED/meter? I'm trying to connect four of these together in parellel and power them accordingly but now I'm worried my wattage is way to the high with the power supply I have in mind.

      Did you figure your issue out?
      I have similar questions about the power supply.
      Haven't decided what to go with yet, 5V or 12V LEDs, but whatever the case may be what gauge wire do we use?
      Is it based off of the volts, amps or watts?

    • @Octoooo
      @Octoooo 4 месяца назад +2

      @@coreyevans9543 I soldered on the 18 gauge wires he recommended. If you're just running 1 or two strips then it's not incredibly necessary. I think if you're going for a longer run of multiple strips, I would recommend upgrading the gauge to 18 for less resistance throughout the strip and using a higher voltage strip like the 12 volt over the 5 volt.
      As a word of advice, try to find tutorials that mimick your own project and goals with that project as much as possible so you make the least mistakes.

      @Octoooo
      I've been doing some calculations and it seems that the lower 5V set-up is more expensive than the 24V set-up.
      I need about 13 metres of LEDs, which is around 300 watts. The thing I found that costs more are 5V LEDs and the wire to handle the amps.
      Did you do price setup comparisons?

  • @AlvaroQF
    @AlvaroQF Год назад +3

    Good video, but you don’t say is how inefficient the ws2815 LEDs are, the high power consumption that they take and that they are quite expensive. The ws2811 on the bright 96LED/m variant is much more efficient and as good if not better than the ws2815 to voltage drop as it requires less amps.

    I will be glad if you can reply urgently. I bought WS2815 led strip. I wanted to test it with the 12volt output (12.5A) transformer I have. I connected the red and white ends of the strip led to the plus and minus outputs of the transformer, but it did not light up. I will get the ESP 32 i microprocessor later. My goal is to pre-test. how do i do this.
    Did I make a wrong connection? Or are the led strips faulty?

    • @ChrisMaherDIY
      @ChrisMaherDIY  Год назад +1

      Thanks for watching and great question! So my understanding is that these along with most addressable lights need the data to be connected before they do anything. Led strips that are the basic ones that dont really have data going into it will fire up with power and nothing else but these (at least in my experience) need the data connected as well. Without the data, the lights don't know what to do when plugged in and just stay off. I hope that makes sense!

    I have a few questions.
    1) When we use a mobile phone adapter instead of the voltage reducer that converts 12 volts to 5 volts in the video, would it be sufficient to supply 5 volts from the mini USB input of the ESP module?
    2) When we use a telephone adapter, is there a need to apply voltage to other points of the module?
    3) How many pins of ESP32 did you connect the green wire to?

    • @ChrisMaherDIY
      @ChrisMaherDIY  Год назад +3

      Thanks so much for watching! So I have successfully powered the esp device using an old phone charger which would eliminate the need for the converter. You could then just power the led strip directly with the 12v power. You would still need to connect the gnd to the gnd of the 12v power supply though. I just connected the green data wire to 1 pin of the esp32 module. I believe it was the d4 or d2 pin.

    Great video, Chris! I have a question regarding your 12V/5A = 60W power supply recommendation.
    According to the specifications, a 5M WS2815 LED Strip will take 90W to power (probably at full white with no degradation).
    If we consider 20% higher (90W *1.2), it will be 108W.
    Does this theoretically mean we should be using a minimum of a 120W power supply? That is twice as much as what you're recommending.
    Am I understanding this correctly?

    • @mattwilson9293
      @mattwilson9293 10 месяцев назад

      I just installed exactly 5m of this WS2815 strip (144 LED/m) around my walk in shower. Yes, it's a rather big shower.
      Using WLED to limit power to 2.5amps, this is more than adequate for powering 5 meters. Remember, this is with me using 144led/m strips.
      Any higher than 4 amps and it becomes offensively bright on all colors, especially white.
      You dont NEED a 12v10a power supply, but it won't necessarily hurt anything as long as you don't let it try to pump 10amps all the time.

      @ChrisMaherDIY  Год назад +2

      Thanks so much for watching and great question! So there really isn't anything wrong with using the connectors that the strip comes with but at least for me, since i'm always making different things with these lights, more times than not i'm using a leftover strip and its just been easier to solder on 3 wires to the beginning vs trying to solder another connector piece with another set of injection wires to the beginning. Now I also don't have to waste that first led and I could take my time to remove the pre made wires If I wanted to but for the sake of time, I just usually cut if off. Also for many of my projects, I need longer wires than the short ones they come with and i'm for the most part always using 18awg wires which are much thicker than the ones that come with it which will help with voltage drop when the power needs to be placed farther away from the beginning of the strip. Lol sorry for the long reply but I hope that makes a little sense!

The other one with 3 wire: red, white & green are directly connected to ESP32. Red to 5V, White to GND (between G13 & G12) and Green to G4.

I can't use WLED drivers unfortunately for my project (making a wordlclock) but i am familiar programming in arduino language myself. This leaves me with the following: my ESP32 MH-ET-LIVE board has - i think - 3.33V data out at IO33 (but i think at all data outputs to be honest) even though i drive it with step down 5V like you do.
    I have read that the 3.3V data signal would not be enough for the WS2815 strip to take it in, and that i need another shift level convertor to bring the data to 5V again. I dont see you use it, so I wonder if it is even needed?

    Plz tell me what I'm missing here regarding your 12v 5a power supply.
    You used 2 full 5m strips which appeared to be 60 leds/m.
    LEDs are 0.3w each so 60 LEDs x 10m = 180W / 12V = 15amps
    General rule of thumb is to add 20% to the power supply so how are you running those lights (which should be using an 18amp power supply) on a 5a?

      @ChrisMaherDIY  Год назад

      Thanks so much for watching! That's a great question! I don't have the technical knowledge of a lot of people out there yet but my understanding is that led strips recommend power based on max performance. I really have never had the need to run things at full brightness/full white and when running things at lets say 50%, its still very bright and hard to look at. Also, running animations and any other color than white will use far less than the max of what the lights are capable of. I could be way off on my assumptions but I have always been more of a lets plug things in and see what happens type of guy when it comes to playing around with LEDs.

I was considering getting a nice big 12 v 15A 180W PSU for my project using 15m of ws2811 but now I am having second thoughts.... Additionally, I am curious to know of it is possible to connect the data wire (green)to 2 led strips and have the same data sent through them I was thinking 5m and 10m( with power injection ) since the big power supply has 3 pairs of +v -v I can use. Thanks so much for watching and great questions! I did not use power injection on this setup. Just had the power going in at the beging of the first led strip and that's all. If I remember correctly, at 100% brightness and white, I did notice a drop off in color but on every animation or just regular color, it looked great. I also think If I had the brightness set to about 70% and white, I did not notice any drop off in color at that point. And yes you can certainly run the data wire to 2 strips and have them do the same thing. This is called running them in parallels. You can simply split the data line coming from the controller (I love using wago connectors to split the data) and then run the data to whatever strips you have and it should work great!

      Thanks again buddy! In case you didn't see my reply on your comment on the other video: Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment! Sounds like an epic project! I have yet to do an install that large so I'm not 100% sure what would be best but here is what I would probably start out with and see how it looks. Depending on the setup of the room I would probably do 2 power supplies (hopefully keep the length of injection wires down a little bit) If you are wanting to have them running on white and full brightness, you would probably need a power injection every 5 meters. If you don't necessarily need them at full brightness and full white, you could probably do just fine with an injection every 10 meters. If you use sk6812 leds, they have a separate white channel and I think on those you could do a power injection at every 10m and be good
      You could probably get away with using just 1 esp32 device but here are some more of the recommended lengths from the WLED info page: kno.wled.ge/features/multi-strip/
      So much of what I do is not technical and just more trial and error. I generally will just test everything out on the floor with little to no power injection, see how it looks and then go from there until I'm happy with how it looks!

Might make a good video idea. The 5V rail has the Sata connections, again just chop em off or amend hte female connection end to then wire onto the lights. Not sure how the datawires would work though haveing not don3e anything with the LEDs I bought 18 months ago! (project to come!) and usually you get multiple of each. Older PSUs favour the molex and 12v, as SSDs and smaller drives now run on 5v so usually you get more. It'd have all the necessary protection and all that as they have to to meet the EU standards. I reckon it'd be a doddle for you. One switch to turn on and it'd run the whole room. Add that onto a plug that can be controlled via you app to switch it on and off. Hey presto! :)

Since i've never tried using led profiles/ lights for a main lighting source, i'm afraid I would just be guessing if I gave you any advice. I really do like govee but i'm not sure their led strips would be best for main lighting since the white color on the strips is not a dedicated white. My approach with everything is do a little online research, order what I think will be best, test it out and either keep it and use it because it looks nice, or return things, get my money back and try something else. I'm very much a trial and error type of guy so that's usually how I go about doing things. I also don't really have any experience yet on switches or trying to run power to main house supply.
