Related to "don't buy all the things"..........don't start by USING all the things. I jumped right in and started making complicated recipes and then when I had a reaction I didn't like, had absolutely NO idea what ingredient caused the problem. I've wasted a lot of money and product by starting too big. Start with very basic recipes, see how it works. Then add one or two things to the next batch, see how it works. And so on. This is just as true for bar soap as it is for syndet bars or cosmetics.

i started making cosmetics 5 years ago and i made every single one of those mistakes about BUYING ALL OF IT in the beginning :)
i have a tip: if you can, have a separate fridge for your raw materials if you are doing this for more than a hobby. i am have a spare fridge that i keep all the oils, EOs, butters and extracts in so they last longer.

I second the spreadsheet idea for keeping track of your ingredients arsenal!
I would, however, add another section that tells you the price!
I am curious as to where my products will fall in the price range, and having to go back to the website to check the prices is tedious and learning the prices by heart is pretty boring and almost impossible 😂
But I really like knowing how much I've saved by DIYing a product!! 😂
This way I can say e.g. the solid shampoo I make is about 2,86€/100g (excluding shipping), whereas LUSH sells shampoo bars for 20€/100g. It fills me with immense joy and satisfaction knowing that my shampoo is the same, if not better quality at a fraction of the price 🙈😂

ok, I admit as a newbie, I have overindulged in a massive quantity of oil fragrances. I love them... However, now that I have watched this video, I am planning on using my 16oz (yes, I know, yikes) in soap and making copycat hydrosols. I will say that this gives me permission to play more with ideas and use it all up. Thank you for your great advice and I look forward to getting your book. Thanks for your channel, I am learning a lot and this is so much fun! PS, If something with soap doesn't work, throw it in the laundry soap. Ha😂

I make a spread sheet with the dates I purchased the products, description with quantity in oz and grams, where I got them from and how much they costed including shipping and taxes (I divide the shipping and taxes cost by the amount of item I got in the purchase) and the cost per oz and per gram. That way I will know where I got the ingredients from and when I calculate the cost of a production it’s much easier to just look at my notes. I was pricing my products wrongly because I didn’t know how much the ingredients costed by gram and oz. Now I know how to calculate and make profit for wholesale and retail 🎉

I decided to start making things shortly before a major move. I didn't place any ingredient orders until after the move, so I had plenty of time to do research, plan my orders, etc.
One of my tips is to choose recipes first, then buy for them. Find a few recipes that sound interesting. list their ingredients, see if you can substitute things so you can use the same ingredients in more than one recipe. For example, the creams, lotions, after shower oils that I wanted to make could all use the same carrier oils. After looking at oil properties, I chose apricot kernel and meadowfoam ... and I'm happy with them.
An expensive oil you will use (meadowfoam, for me) is cheaper than buying 2-3 low cost oils you don't like and won't use. And it's all cheaper than luxury commercial products!

I've been making cosmetic for 5 yrs and I too have made most of the mistakes you've mentioned. The biggest one is over purchasing containers. I have been smart however when purchasing EO and fragrance oils; only purchasing them in 2oz quantity or less. That way, I'm not stuck with fragrances I don't like. Thanks for making this video. I will certainly consider some of your suggestions.

The comment on old EO is very interesting. You say about not using some old lavender EO because you are afraid of the sensitization from them. What do you mean by this?
I have not heard this before, but I have been having problems using the lip balms I use to use and make. I believe I am making it with all fresh stuff, but I will have to pay attention to this. It is causing my lips a skin around my lips to turn red and even peel. I am having some reaction to it. I was thinking it could be the peppermint or rose wax I use, but I am not sure. I am pretty much just using Vaseline at night which I am not a fan of but it works. I would love to know what you think.

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  4 года назад

This should be a good starting point to learn more: tisserandinstitute.org/safety/irritation-allergic-reactions/ . You can google "essential oil sensitization tisserand" for more.
Also, please don't re-post questions again and again until you get an answer-it's really frustrating for me and clogs up the queue of questions I need to answer. It also means you're less likely to find an answer when I do give one. Happy making!

Humblebee & Me Thanks so much for your response. Sorry about asking multiple times. Won’t do it again. Figured one would be answered. I did it here but then thought the blog would be better. Article was very helpful. I definitely developed some kind of allergy. I am assuming peppermint on lips. Body seems fine. Article never really did say wether the age of the oil could cause more chance of sensitivity or not though. Thanks again.
