The position of Uke's body relative to Tori and the execution of kuzushi make it different to Tai Otoshi, however in this variation the foot work is largely similar however Tai Otoshi is designed to fracture the leg however this version is not.

As far as I am concerned Ippon seoi nage is defined by throwing uke over one point (=ippon) which in this case is the shoulder (=seoi or kata). I immideately thought of it as an tai otoshi when I saw it. As far as I understand Ippon seoi nage is executed by using your shoulder to lock ukes shoulder and your hips to lift his legs up...... Tai otoshi however belongs to the gokyu category of TE-waza (hand techniques) and is thrown by pulling on ukes arm whilst your leg either blocks his leg movement or even lifts them up by straightening while pulling with your arm. I think your throwing technique is very well executed but not entirely comparable to Ippon seoi nage however it could count as a variation of seoi otoshi (shoulder overthrow) which for you would actually additionally had to go down on your kness but...... Could you explain your attempt on this very throw as you understand it to be an ippon seoi nage ?

Sorry for not replying to this sooner, I've only just seen this comment (a year late) apologies. You absolutely right about Tai Otoshi being within the Gokyu category of Te-waza but there isn't a Seoi-waza Gokyu category. Shoulder throws can cover a myriad of executions which arguably could place it closer to Koshi-waza or Te-waza. You don't need to go onto your knees for Seoi Otoshi as the difference is the principle of the throw, otoshi means to drop where as nage means to project so there a difference in the application. I know of 5 footwork for this technique just for the basic position not including changes in like angle or dropping etc. In each case however the principle of the throw is the same. This many judo schools and jujitsu schools wont distinguish them in the same way much in the same as in karate many schools call soto uke, uchi uke and visa versa. You can describe this throw as Morote (two handed) Sode taiotoshi and thats just named based on the principle of execution. It can be described as Ippon Seoi Nage because Ippon can also mean whole as well as 1 and is distinct to seoi nage in relation to position of uke and tori following the throw. In half shoulder uke is thrown half way over and in effect lands at the side of tori where as full shoulder the uke goes all the way over in effect landing in front. Seoi is shoulder and a distinction between this and taiotoshi, the principle axis of the throw the shoulder is inline with uke's shoulder as the entry brings you under your opponent. In tai otoshi again controlled through the hands uke's body is offset over ukes leg and the axis of rotation rather than being perpendicular to the vertical plane is at an angle parallel to the line of tori's body. Lastly I would describe this as nage rather than otoshi because Uke is projected not just dropped vertically downwards. All of that being said the semantics of the name are usually personal to each dojo and we make a point about this because we use japanese for naming of techniques but we probably wouldn't debate this in english for example if I call a punch, a jab, a snap punch or a front hand punch they are just different chosen names to describe the same thing.

@@DanielPyatt tai otoshi is to break the leg, and ippon is to break the arm…which cannot be done in this throw you did. Break the arm over the shoulder, cannot be done by holding the gi that way. So your own argument is working against you.
This variation CAN break the knee if you move closer over said knee. This is simply just the judo variation by sweeping at the ankle.

@@AndomedaShift re-read the explanations above as I’ve already covered the first points. As for grips it’s correct the original forms of seoi nage are all essentially designed to break the arm as the primary mechanism of the throw however the grips employed here and in many judo variants don’t purely for safety. This is a purely technical execution of the throw not a variant for reality.

Seoi Otoshi can be done this way but there are many variations between the two.
