Officially starting here as home base. Self-taught, been noodling around the same stale lack of knowledge since I was 16...always afraid of any theory...learned just enough over the years to be frustrated as dream of beautiful melodies and progressions but didn't know the language to express them. Sounds like a few people have echoed the same feelings, but have already had more ah-ha moments watching a few of your videos during quarantine that I have over a couple of decades. Thank you Stitch....!

I memorized the 5 basic boxes decades ago and continue to use them as practice warm ups starting in different keys etc. I could never find a way to utilize #3 in my ad lib solos always jumping from 1- 2 then up to# 5. Thanks to you, I think that with some additional practice I can expand my solo vocabulary. I have played in cover bar bands for years and continue to do so. My thanks for your videos.

Awesome lesson as always. A nice way to remember min/maj root note positions is that if you descend the pentatonic shape, the maj root note is always the note after the min root note ie the next note in the pentatonic shape

I practiced these ad naseum, until I had it down. The book I originally learned the patterns from didn't call them "Form 1" and so on, it was "C shape" (which is form 4) . Your never-lost really helped. Now if I could just understand "phrasing." You and Sean are great teachers, I'm looking forward to your Blues classes.

    Suggestions for the PDF;
1.) show all the minor and major roots/homes (not just the first which occur)
2.) add an image which shows the forms "stacked" together (preferably with the individual forms indicated)
3.) add an image of the "circle of fifths" to clarify the relationship of the different keys/names of the minor and it's related major
I'm not complaining, just trying to be helpful. Thanks for all you do! ;)

I just starting playing the guitar and realized the pentatonic boxes are all built on the same two shapes based on the root chord. Either a C shape or an A shape depending on your root note and if you are going up/down left/right. The only caveat is that once you hit the B string, you move the fretting by a half step. I think thats similar to what you are conveying

Hey Stitch. Thanks so much for the time you take to do these videos. I'm back into playing for a little over a year now after taking a LONG time off due to life issues.. Anyway, I always knew that first Pentatonic shape (and a small part of the second) but now, partially from your awesome videos, I can strongly say I have all 5 "boxes" down very firmly now. It's coming together in terms of how each "box" interacts with the box above and below it. I still struggle with "sounding" like I am playing blues. I can put a backing track on and play thru all 5 boxes, moving up and down, but I am still not really "hearing" that "blues" sound. I am understanding, in theory, the 3rds and 5ths but I still can't pull it all together into that cool "blues sound". Love to see you do a lesson on putting that all together into blues sounding riffs. I am close, but not quite putting it together. Thanks man!!

I've been staring at the chart this morning. I a numbers kind of guy and noticed some patterns; don't know how valuable this is practically speaking, but I'm going to toss it out there in case it's of use to anyone.
First, the patterns emerge best if you consider only the low five strings. The high E is just sort of a "shadow copy" of the low E - those are always the same in all patterns. So for the rest of these points just sort of forget about the high E.
Form 1 has the root on the lowest fret of the lowest string, and gives us our fundamental pattern, Form 1.
Now imagine rotating the five strings to the right. The B string rotates around to the low E string (and remember the high E is just a copy of that). That leads us directly to Form 4; just remember that you have to shift down a fret when moving from the G string to the B string.
Rotating again leads us directly to Form 2. Once again, raise by a fret when shifting from G to B.
Rotating again leads directly to Form 5. The low fret of the G string isn't colored red, but that's just because he's only made the lowest root note red - that low G string fret is an octave up from fret 4 of the E string.
Finally, one more rotation leads to Form 3. For this one we want the root on the B string, so it starts one fret higher on the neck than the others because of that usual shift.
So this explains why there are five forms - there are only five "unique" strings (since high E is a copy of low E), so we get a form for having the root on the lowest played fret of each string. But they're really all just "string rotations" of one another.
Also, we can see WHY our guitars have the 4-fret difference between the G and B strings, instead of the "normal" five fret difference. Five unique strings, five frets each gives us a total range of 25 semitones. But two octaves only has 24 semitones, so including that one string-to-string shift of only four frets instead of five reduces our total to 24, as it needs to be.
Like I said, I don't know if this is worth anything, but I think it's going to help me along since it provides a relationship amongst the forms and makes them seem less "arbitrary" to me. Instead of just being things given to us, I see more fully now how they relate to one another.

Sorry to be thick here Ian but I agree with Dan Daniels comment - your charts and the fret relationships have me completely confused and I do know the minor/major forms, but obviously in some other universe. I want to make sure there aren't any holes in my understanding of your reasoning. I have been able to following everything else I've seen you do. Thanks for your efforts.
EDIT: Ok, I ran through it a couple more times. You are just showing forms (not all progressing through the same key) and their relative roots. I have always seen them represented in a progression through one key. Your emphasis is on the minor/major root positions in each of their forms. Thanks, you have exposed a big weakness in my use of the pent forms. Thanks again, I have some work to do. TW

I actually have a printout of the 5 pentatonic scales taped on my wall. I haven't moved beyond that because I don't know what I would use them for. Here is a description of my playing - rhythm guitar, singing, mostly 60's R&B and some pop, mostly just me and the acoustic guitar. I have several songs where I just play the chords which gets boring to listen to.
Question is what would I use pentatonic scales for.

.Nice point. All you have to do then is know where you are starting in that progression because depending on position and string you may end up starting with the second instance of the 1-4, or the third instance of the 1-3, whatever.

Thanks for a great lesson, which I am sure will be very beneficial to many viewers.
What is your opinion about considering the starting points for the Pentatonic scale in a modal sense? i.e. they are pentatonic versions of the modes, so Box 1 = Aeolian (aka Minor), Box 2 = Ionian (aka Major,) Box 3 = Dorian, Box 4 = Phrygian, and Box 5 = Mixolydian. Although with the pentatonic scale for the Dorian mode the 3rd of the minor chord is absent, for the Phrygian mode the 5th of the minor chord is absent, for the and for the Mixolydian mode the 3rd of the major chord is absent, which can confuse some students when you try to explain that the chords used are constructed using notes which you don't play in the pentatonic scale.
This then raises the question as to whether it is better to teach the theory of triad construction (Root, 3rd, 5th) before or after teaching the pentatonic scales. In my limited experience I have had more success when I teach the full heptatonic scales (or are they septatonic scales? Music theory uses terms from Greek and from Latin, and doesn't always make sense or follow logic, especially when you start delving into German and Slavic notations where they have an H note, but not a B note, or some other stupidity which takes a lot of hard work to understand) before introducing the pentatonic scales, this is probably because I tend to throw the theory of chord construction into the mix at the same time. I don't teach professionally, but I do think that every musician needs to learn a bit of theory at least.
Sorry about the long winded and rambling comment. I hope that it makes sense to you.

Just was watching your video for pentatonics and wanted to know all the shapes and then boom you wrote it in the comments. It’s like your reading my mind. Are you going to Mondegreen.

You can start any Form # on any fret and the form will always be the same...got it! Now to my question....this is where I am struggling to visualize...five Forms, five chords in CAGED....which chord corresponds with which form? Thanks for your work and teaching ability! Much appreciated...👍👍👍

That’s easy…. Go to my Caged Primer Playlist and watch lessons 7 and 8…. Then report back😉

Hi Stich, I'm new to your material and trying to straighten out some of my thinking and vocabulary. What does "Form" mean, and what does "1" mean, exactly?

Do they call you stitch because you connect things? OMG I've never learned so much in a day. You are an amazing teacher, I have a feeling you are an even better musician. I'm a huge fan, you ever play live, and what area of the US are you?

Is there a magic trick for memorizing these forms? Obviously the top notes are always the bottom notes from the previous form. I get lost very easily but I am just learning. I am 60 which is kind of old but the main issue is that I'm a dumb ass.
    Thanks
