AMEN to your point Dan! A "Motu Origins" style line of TMNT would be absolute perfection. I do hope they do a little better on the articulation (bicep swivels, ankle pivots, and thigh cuts being pretty important to achieve those vintage poses) But it would be a dream come true to have a line like that.
This is the best TMNT figure Playmates has made in several years. I do like that they went their own way with this, and I agree it makes it a unique version of The Last Ronin that is complementary to, rather than competing with, NECA's versions (including their future toon version they teased). That's smart, and collectors have a reason to buy both. The retro/modern fusion is also very much in keeping with Playmates' heritage.
Well, if you'll remember, Mattel did a reissue of vintage MOTU figures in the early 2000s called "Commemorative". I think Playmates might be testing the waters to see if they can make that play with their retro reissues because they already tried the "Classics" style & were shunned for them (so far I've got a few figures from each of the 4 lines that have done TMNT & I've liked them all)
It doesn’t have to be one or the other. New designs such as this would indeed be awesome. But reissues of the classics are always needed. Most of us no longer have the figures from our youth, so I’m grateful to Playmates for making them available again. The ‘80s/90s TMNT line are some of the most iconic toys ever made, and I don’t think we should ever discourage Playmates from keeping them alive.
@@ilkvomit88 But they’ve been selling, often been hard to find, so clearly there’s plenty of demand. And Playmates has been putting in the effort, like the cool outer boxes with awesome artwork for the themed sets. Plus there are plenty of other companies giving us non-Playmates Turtles. I too would like to continue seeing them get creative with new designs. But not at the cost of the classic figures becoming scarce again.
I think it is very optimistic to believe TMNT could carry a gazillion numbers of toy lines Neca (with several sub lines), Super 7, AXN, A recast, a modernisation version of the old figures along with a 5 point of articulation figures. Modernisation of the old figures would compete a lot more directly with Super 7 which many find overpriced having a cheaper option would make sense.
naturally would love more collectible figures in this line. A dedicated comic book vintage line would be awesome. Also good with reissues too. Still hoping for a mutant module and hopefully technodrome down the road.
Nice review as always! I have this figure as well. I wanted to get it because of that idea of it being like a modern continuation of the Playmates line. I thought it was fitting because The Last Ronin brought back together Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird so this particular figure felt like an homage to that, in a weird way. Gonna get the NECA one too.
I totally agree with you. I would love if Playmates would release figures like this in stores now. Even if they were a little more expensive then MOTU origins so that they had the articulation and the painted weapons.
The fact that Playmates hasn't jumped on the bandwagon and done a similar thing with turtles in the vein of MOTU Origins might just be the biggest crime of this early decade.
A TMNT origins like would be amazing! It could even do what MOTU origins is doing and make figures from other lines too! so instead of the 200X He-Man, Have the next mutation or 2003 turtles
I have said to a couple of friends that I really wish Playmates would redo the old figures in a more articulated manner in the same way Mattel is with Origins so really pleased that this offers a glimpse of what that would be like.
This looks like the best tmnt figure that Playmate has made in years. Haven't been a fan of their figures since the original tmnt toys but this looks like a nice return to form
Important that it did come with all the Turtle standard weapons, but it is disappointing that it didn't come with the Tonfas. Maybe to extend the Last Ronin like of figues they should start with those articulated turtle figures as how they looked before their fall and also include April both yound and old, Casey both daddy and daughter, and Oroko Hiroto because you need at least one villian.
@@doctordetroit1217 Well, to do that without getting spoilery it would have to be 3 molds doing a different stance and no weapons. Except as more weapons for Ronin's arsenal. I mean the figure is missing the Tonfas.
I'm curious how he scales with the 2012 turtles. I have been customizing those figures the last few years. (Blood, battle damage, shading etc.) Do you think that the head will come off this one semi easily?
I was a big fan of last ronin came out cause I’ve always loved the really gritty aspect of ninja turtles. If your a fan I highly recommend picking it up, I saw some people having issues with it about price before picking it up but compared to a black series figure I was going to get that day this goes above that figure. What made me even happier was that it is made in the style of turtles I grew up playing with, those early 2000s figures that are built with that dense polymer plastic and every item has a place to be stored on him. This figure just continues my love for all things turtles
Such a great figure! I definitely agree with you..a TMNT origins style line is what they should be making, not just rereleases. I do think they should also rerelease some of their harder to find figures, and figures they never released.
I'm surprised it's not in scale with the classics figures they've done and re-released. And yes, Playmates should do more figures like this in the vintage scale with articulated joints.
I grabbed the B&W variant of this figure a few weeks ago and one of my first thoughts after opening it was "Pixel Dan is going to love this." If they stuck a biceps swivel in there and gave him ankle rockers he'd be perfect. Personally, I also wouldn't mind it if they chunked him up a little. I look at how dainty his hands look vs a vintage figure, in particular, and I think it would look a little better if they added some bulk, but that's a nitpick. Otherwise, really fun release and I'm actually curious to see if Playmates does anything else in this style and this scale going forward.
I think they should keep doing reprints, BUT, they should package all the turtles together with the van as a complete set, almost like a bucket of army men
If they will remake the vintage TMNT line with more articulation like this figure and the same 4 inch scale It will be a turtle frenzy all over Much like the Masters of the universe origins of course turtles will have more children by them
Here's a question for the Pixel Dan community If Playmates does in fact hear our cries and goes forward with a TMNT Origins line what should the line actually be called? I do like the simplicity of just being straight up and going with TMNT Origins, even if it is uninspired because it's basically Masters of the Universe Origins.
I'm looking forward to getting this guy. He's sitting in my pile of loot at BBTS right now. I thought about getting the NECA version, but Playmates honestly makes better toys. The sculpt isn't necessarily better, of course, but I'm not really concerned about breakage and locked joints with Playmates stuff. And, this guy isn't just a simple repaint/reissue of their Classic turtles...which is a nice departure. Nothing against the Classic turtles, but it is nice to see them do something different. The only thing I might gripe about is that it would be nice if he were maybe a little bit larger...not sure about that, though...I'll have to see how I feel about him in-hand. Thanks for the review and comparisons!
This looks brilliant, do you happen to know if they plan to make the ghost turtles? Fingers crossed, love that he looks to be in scale with the other figures!
I hope playmates sees the potential in this a rereleases the old figures with these updates. I think it would be a smart move in this scale and price point especially at a time when lines like G.I. Joe are doing so well. There is clearly a market for it with Super 7 doing a premium large scale line. This gives collectors a more viable cheaper option.
I definitely wanna get at least 1 Last Ronin figure to add to my collection. That whole story was incredible & very well written (I have all 5 issues). The ending was a bit sad, but it's like Star Wars in the sense that there's still a ray of hope (I'm trying to refrain from major spoilers).
Personally, I think Playmates should leave the Origins styled TMNT figures to Mattel. The two are already collaborating with Turtles of Grayskull, wouldn't hurt to continue thIs little venture by releasing a turtles only spinoff line down the road like Mattel did with Masters of the WWE.
AMEN to your point Dan!
A "Motu Origins" style line of TMNT would be absolute perfection.

This figure reminds me of the style they had for the 2003 turtles, at least in the face.
Love that there's no spoilers and yet some obvious clues to who is The Last Ronin.
I like the Playmates version better than the NECA version. Hope they make more figures in this realistic aesthetic
Pixel Dan after a year just like what you said Playmates did it hahaha
This is the best TMNT figure Playmates has made in several years. Love that extremely lowkey comparison time spoiler you did there 👌🏿
The scale is actually perfect because he had continued to mutate and grow in The Last Ronin. He was pretty tall compared to when they were teenagers
I fully agree man, a masters of the universe origins version of the vintage toys would be amazing!
We got our wish
Agreed, this is what Playmates should be doing. Retro style with modern articulation and paint apps. This may be my favorite Playmates TMNT figure.
Dear Dan, I don't think you'll ever read this but thank you for making my TMNT childhood one hell of a blast.
I agree I'd like to see new turtles in this new style like you said Dan.

It would be cool if they did it like every now and then, but over the past couple years they've been going really ham
@@ilkvomit88 But they’ve been selling, often been hard to find, so clearly there’s plenty of demand. Question: Does he scale well with the 2003 figures?
I love the old school head, for Playmates this is actually good.
Sweet. This might end up being my first Playmates figure since the 90’s. & hope that this is how Playmates do TMNT going forward.
Hey Dan! Thank you for giving us good content on TMNT! I’ve been watching you since the first ever TMNT 2012 series came out!!
Keep up the good work
The Grappling Hook(1987), the Tonfas(1997), the Kusarigama(2012).
This is what the Europeans was censored Nunchucks that started it all.
My God. If Playmates did an Origins style TMNT line... My poor wallet... Great review! I have to pick this figure up!
naturally would love more collectible figures in this line. A dedicated comic book vintage line would be awesome. Also good with reissues too. Still hoping for a mutant module and hopefully technodrome down the road.

Glad playmates is starting to do new figures. Hopefully until the Seth Rogan movie we get some new turtles
I totally agree with you. I would love if Playmates would release figures like this in stores now. Even if they were a little more expensive then MOTU origins so that they had the articulation and the painted weapons.
I'm more impressed they colored the weapons
The fact that Playmates hasn't jumped on the bandwagon and done a similar thing with turtles in the vein of MOTU Origins might just be the biggest crime of this early decade.

The head is basically raph's head from the cartoon turtles

I would include the ghost like versions of the other 3 brothers also!

It's a beautiful and heartbreaking story
The truth is that this Mike "The last Ronin" looks great, the video is very good Pixel Dan, greetings 💪🏻🇦🇷

I absolutely agree
It would be sick to see Playmates do more Mirage characters or some Archie characters
I would be all in on a retro modern line of all new figures. That’s how you get me back playmates toys!!
Playmates should do an entire IDW line in the classic style. Hobs, lita, Venus, Jennika etc…
I'm surprised it's not in scale with the classics figures they've done and re-released.

Just found out about this fig so came to see the comparison. Was not disappointed . Keep up the great work
If Playmates TMNT went MOTU Origins route it would be huge.
I think they should keep doing reprints, BUT, they should package all the turtles together with the van as a complete set, almost like a bucket of army men
I like turtles

Me too

Dan says everything is holstered and moves the broken katana out of the frame 😂
completely agree! would love to see a levelled up line! hope they finally cast the Raph in the proper skin colour soon too
i thought it was the large size like cobra kai sets wow!
Playmates needs a win.

It will be a turtle frenzy all over
Much like the Masters of the universe origins of course turtles will have more children by them
thanks for the review. Picked this guy up recently myself
👍 more Tmnt unboxing please
Yeah, it's a heIIa awesome figure...🤘🏼💯✔️
The face reminds me of 2003 don
I think you should compare him the 2k3 version since he looks more like them
I wasn't interested in this figure, but after watching this video...

Great Review!! Seeing him out of the packaging really shows how much this figure shines 😎🤓💚
I been saying for months playmates need to stop re-releasing the vintage ones and release the vintage ones with added articulation like motu origins

TMNT Origins, guys. Come on, Playmates!

I almost love this figure more than the NECA. It’s an actual toy.
