Real Boeing Pilot | 737NG Cold & Dark Setup Tutorial

  • In this tutorial we’ll perform a full setup from Cold & Dark in a pre-release version of the ZIBO MOD (BETA Version 3.29)
    Simulating a flight from Corfu (CFU/LGKR) to London Heathrow (LHR/EGLL) we’ll go through the entire setup based on real world procedures used every single day at a European Airline.
    This is more an insight and the procedures have been tailored slightly to suit single pilot operations in a desktop simulator.
    The setup covers in the detail the order in which things are completed and includes all applicable charts, briefings and performance calculations, matching exactly what I would to if I was setting up this flight in real life.
    Enjoy!

    I'd watched this once before, but I hadn't flown the Zibo yet. I've learned how to fly the plane fairly well, but I haven't attempted a cold and dark startup yet, watched this again
    and now feel confident I can manage it. Can't thank you enough! Now I feel much more so that I've got a handle on all the systems and startup procedures.

      @@flightdeck2sim I meant to try one weeks ago but was busy moving and didn't have time for simming until recently again. I feel like you gotta block out extra time for a cold and dark! Whereas just pushing back and taxing out doesn't take that long, really.

    • @thiscorrosion900
      @thiscorrosion900 4 года назад

      @@flightdeck2sim I did a dry run at Miami Intl., following a flight I did the other night on Zibo to Jamaica, I followed your tutorial exactly and got the cold and dark startup done! I had some minor trouble transitioning to APU Power, bus, etc., but I managed to fix that. Did my pushback, so that's accomplished. Otherwise I was chuffed. P.S. Nevermind, I managed to
      figure out XCamera and set up my basic camera views for the Zibo. That should solve those problems. The plane's impossible to fly properly without them set, since it requires
      frequent switching to the overhead, pilot view, pedestal, FMC, etc.

  •  6 лет назад +1

    Brilliant as always!
    One tip I world like to share for those who don't already know about it is when putting in a long route in the FMC. To save yourself a bit of time you can stick to putting in just the airways and the waypoints connecting the airways will populate automatically as long as the routing is correct.
    So let's say you have a route like this -> A A1 B B1 C C1 D. In this case you could put in A followed by A1, B1 and C1 where B and C would be automatically inserted for you.
    If not using saved routes and when doing longer flights it's quite convenient!

    Great video! Whether you are an expiring pilot or just a simmer that wants complete immersion I think these videos do an incredible job of showing real world procedures. This is good stuff that you cant get out of a manual. Yeah you can read the norm procedures for a 737 and just do them, but to here why exactly you do them from a real pilot is priceless knowledge. Thank you for doing these videos and keep them coming!!!

      Hi Lee!
      Let me dispel a myth! I started flying the 737 with 280 hours total time. I had a lot to learn and I still to this day as an instructor teaching people how to fly the 737 have lots to learn!
      Yes with more hours does come more experience but regardless of experience, you have to still pass the same check every 6 months. Sometimes the old boys can struggle with certain elements of the operation where as a fresh cadet straight out of the type rating would be more proficient with dealing a situation they recently practiced in the sim. With more experience you develop better decision making and exposure to different situations but ability can vary considerably

    Just updated to 3.29a. If you are talking to Zibo can you pass on the following:
    I can confirm in 3.29a centre tank fuel pumps prevent engines from starting and will shut down an engine if turned on after engine is started.
    Also, FMC gives incorrect "Unable Cruise Altitude" and "Using Reserve Fuel" message once airborne.
    Weight was 55 tonnes for takeoff, cruise alt was 33,000 in FMC so "Unable Cruise Altitude" is incorrect.
    Reserves were 2.0 tonnes and arrival fuel was 6 tonnes so "Using Reserve Fuel" message is incorrect.

    Good tutorial for sim pilots to learn real life procedures. Next time you are talking to Zibo, ask him to fix the GRD POWER AVAILABLE light so that it is not on when you set the park brake after engine start or when you set the park brake on the runway for instance !! Also the PM/auto call-outs need to be customisable. For example, in my airline, we do not get PM/auto call-outs at 400 feet and 1000 feet on takeoff. (PS I have over 14000 hours on the real 737 - currently flying the 737-800).

      Your explanations are spot on and any feedback would only be procedural differences which we know are operator-dependent so not really worth discussing. Keep it up. Who knows, your videos may inspire someone to become a 737 driver. Question: Do you have a textures mod for your overhead panels and centre pedestal panels (they seem darker than normal) or is that the stock standard Zibo installation? Great video ... Everything works exactly the way you presented it. I have one question though. Do I have to have the APU unit hooked up at the gate? If I don't, then the IRS on rt. will beep. I did not see the Outside unit hooked up?

    Great video!! One question, is it a mod you're using to get those quick views to snap to different parts of the controls? Like pressing x and you see the overhead, y for throttle quadrant, etc. I see there are some free mods but the ones I have tried aren't working correctly or as well as what you seem to have set up. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

      @flightdeck2sim  5 лет назад

      Hi Evan747,
      It's the default XP11 camera! You need to find the view you like moving around the flight deck/cabin and then assign that view to your keypad. I have assigned the views to my NUMPAD by selecting CTRL _1_ as an example.
      When I push 1 on the numpad it smoothly transitions to that view!
      Good luck!

    Second thing, how the hell calculate in FMC/N1 LIMIT SEL TEMP? I am digging PMDG-737NGXu-FCOMv1.pdf and I stucked on tables in chapter PI.10.14 about Assumed Temperature Reduced Thrust.
    I downloaded Onboard Performance Tool from microsoft side, but it works only in DEMO mode :(

    At 14:04: after waypoint BIG I see 2 waypoints CI27R and FI27R on the legs page; I don't see these waypoints on the approach charts- are these waypoints generated by the FMC? If so, does the "CI" and "FI" have any special meaning? Thank-you for your awesome ZIBO tutorials!

    Hey many thx for the video! One question: if you Need a pushback, is it necessary to turn off A-Pumps hydraulic system during it? Due to gearpin or something like that?

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  5 лет назад +1

      Hi there!
      We used to turn the A pumps off as it was a procedure passed down from the classic 737s. On the -800 it makes no difference. During the initial startup we select all hydraulic system on and they stay on, this helps identify any leaks during the walkaround.
      Prior to pushback a bypass pin is installed to the nosewheel, this isolates the hydraulic system to the nosewheel steering and prevents inadvertent movement of the nosewheel. Some SOP's (ours used to) instruct to turn off both all SYS A pumps prior to push and start, this adds an additional safety net from unintentional nosewheel movement during pushback.

    Thanks, I actually use EFASS. And just looking for information on the Zibo Boeing. But apparently there is hardly any information on the internet that Efass would like to have. I took the following values for the Boeing which I found.
    AverageVS = 1800 ft / min, Average Climb GS = 290 kts, Average Descent GS = NO Information kts, Average Cruise GS = 340 kts, Average Climbfuel / min = NO INFORMATION (kg), Average Decrease Fuel / min = NO INFORMATION (kg), Average cruising fuel / min = NO INFORMATION (kg). How could I get such information?

    Not sure if you've covered it but would be cool to see what procedures are for cockpit callouts on approach. Like "sink rate" or "terrain" and how often they happen in real life :)

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  6 лет назад

      Hi Jake,
      Dependent on the callout! For eg “SINK RATE” would require a simple correction to the rate of descent. An Aural Warning such as “TERRAIN TERRAIN PULL UP” requires a mandatory terrain escape manoeuvre!
      Something I might cover in the future!

    Hello Captain, Thank you for sharing!! Qty about CRZ/Wind. You are saying Take it fro TOC. I See also ad page 1 from the flightplan sheet AVG Wind. Why not use this? Also ad page 3 the payload section and fuel they talk about POSS EXTRA. for the extra fuel RESERVES. Now I'am a little bit confused. Great because I must learn now. Thanks and bye bye from The Netherlands and happy to see you back again.

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  6 лет назад

      Good Question!
      We use TOC wind so VNAV give us the most efficient speed climbing to TOC.
      You can update the average wind on the LEGS - RTE DATA page to give you a more accurate ETA/Fuel Burn. (Should have explained!)
      Not sure what you're referring to regarding POSS EXTRA?

      I wouldn't call it a checklist. Thesse steps are in Operator's manual but are done from memory.
      Checklist is used only to check essential items and is done after.
      Hint : register to vryr and you'll get ryr's SOP which will guide You.

    Hello,
    Thanks again for all your videos and tutorials. Makes my flights more realistic.
    I have a question regarding SEL, assumed temperature on the N1 Limit page of the FMC. I have understood what SEL temperature is, but I just want to know how I can, as a simmer, simply set this temperature. I do not have any tables from Boeing, nor the electronic device you are showing in the video. As I understand, this SEL will depends on Airport, Runway length, payload, OAt, QNH, etc.
    Is there any tool or website where a simple simmer can have this information to setup SEL correctly ?
    And a final question: if we don't know SEL, is it better to leave it blank in the FMS N1 Limit page, or do I need to use the OAT as SEL?
    Thanks for your answer, looking forward for the next Live stream.

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  5 лет назад

      Hi Seb! Thanks for the feedback!
      To work out the assumed temp for T/O performance you need a performance calculator or RTOW chart to work out the maximum weight you can lift for a assumed temp.
      I'm very fortunate to have the Boeing OPT app from my work EFB which calculates the highest assumed temp for you. Not sure what's available as a suitable replacement for the sim community.
      OAT is independent to the Assumed Temp calculation, you just simply put the OAT but an assumed temperature is not required.

      Thanks a lot taking time to answer. I will continue to leave the SEL blank in the FMC for my flights.
      Regards from Switzerland.
      And in case you are looking for another challenging airport in Switzerland (you visit Sion LSGS in one of your video) you can try Lugano, LSZA. It's a very interesting approach, especially with the circle to land. Maybe once in one of your future video. I will be very interested.
