The tragedy of the story was that Edmond's love, and by extension any hope for a happy life, was stolen from him.
Well, kind of. He get his revenge and find a consolation but he asn't so innocent anymore. I mean, he did terrible thigs (and planned do even worse) and he don't feet that he deserve antyhing good from life. IBTW, I want to say, that Gankutsuou is probably the most faithful adaptation of this Dumas classic book. Even taking into account the sci-fi setting.

By all means if you have never watched this series you are not a true lover of Alexsander Dumas

Franz and Albert in Rome. And now I'm binge watching the show. It definitely makes a difference when you have full knowledge of the characters and what happened before hand to give yourself real context to grasp onto.

The also took in a new perspective by having the show revolve around Albert, so instead of seeing the Count manipulate everything, we see more of his effects on the world. This also allows us to see some of the characters trying to find out who exactly the Count is, leading to this mystery behind the scenes and wondering how he fits into Danglars, Villefort, and Fernad pasts. However it also has some jarring decisions as well. For example I would have been completely happy if they just adapted the book into an anime, but instead they set it in the future and as said before, begin to massively deviate from the book by the end. Plus a large amount of the book is Dante being in prison, meeting the scholar, and gaining the knowledge to take his revenge on those that wronged him; yet in the anime his entire backstory is something like half of an episode. A real shame too as this seems to be the only series that really made an attempt to adapt the book, but also had the time available to do it (being a 24 episodes).

JJ once explained he wrote the song around the piece and proceeded to play it live with an accoustic guitar.. He has different lyrics to it on another version where he sings about Chopin's heady romance. He's a clever guy and karate master hence his original links with Japan.

I think "nothing can go wrong" Has a double meaning: The first being the count and how he was naive with love for Mercedes, and how he thought that nothing can separate them The second is after everything happened and now he has made a complicated and meticulous plan to take revenge, knowing that nothing will stop him from exacting justice

Monte Cristo is about revenge, but a big plot point is that Dantés was in love with a woman (I can't remember her name), but his best friend Fernand betrayed him to the aristocrat-run legal system before they could be married and later married the woman himself. If you listen all the way through, it's obvious that the song is about Dantés' love interest and betrayal by his friend.
The 1400 page long unabriged book reveals how much his vast fortune was, an astonishing 75 MILLION francs!!! That is unheard of... he would be richer than the Rothschilds, probably the richest man that ever lived. I have every version that has ever come out... this manga was amazing and retelling was epic!
G. I. Ortega C. His girlfriend's name was Mercedes Igualdala BTW. She was a Catalan fishergirl who was Fernand Mondego's cousin. He married her 3 months after betraying Dantes to the French legal system and they he went off to war soon thereafter. He came under the good graces of the sultan Ali Pasha and betrayed him soon thereafter to the Turks at Yanina. Since he was the only man of his unit left it was up to him to relay what had happened and he painted himself off as a hero, even though he murdered Ali Pasha and sold his wife and daughter Haydee into sexual slavery. He returned to France a war hero and was a nobleman, the Count of Morcerf, and joined the French parliament as a peer of France. The Count did an EXCELLENT job destroying Morcerf, as he did to the rest of his enemies.

Plantit By far the best translation I have ever come across of " The Count of Monte Cristo " is the 1188 page Everyman's Library Version with a foreword by Umberto Eco ( of " The Name of the Rose " fame ). It is a MASTERPIECE. Nothing is left out and I do mean NOTHING. It literally describes a 19th-century France that is not there anymore, and it is a work of art. It even lists Monte Cristo's fortune ( estimated at 50 MILLION Francs! Can you imagine how much 50 MILLION Francs bought back then, how much it would be worth now???!!! He'd be even richer than a Rothschild! Anyway, it is written in a beautiful English translation by a man named Peter Washington that is eloquent, flairful, and full of panache. Go buy it and enjoy the Count of Monte Cristo all over again. :)
I watched this anime well over six/seven years ago and it still stands as probably my favorite anime I’ve ever watched. I have many favorites, but this has definitely always been in the top. I love this song - so sweet, but with so much underlying mystery.

たまたま読んだ ”人生を変えるアニメ” という本に声優の平川さんがアルベールの役に臨んだも落選、フランツ役に抜擢された事などが書かれていましたが、いえいえ、平川さんのフランツ役は申し分ない程にはまり役だと思います！決闘に敗れてアルベールの腕で息絶えるシーンや手紙のシーンは号泣物です！！平川さん本人もあの頃はまだ声優としてだけでは食べていけなくて、不安や不安定な気持や部分がキャラクターの心情とシンクロしていたのではないかとの事で、思い入れのある大切な作品との事です。だからこそこんなにも素晴らしい作品になったんでしょうね.
この作品でご活躍された声優さんの今後のご活躍も期待しています。

Its on 2004 when i first listening to this song on “Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo” anime. Such a great anime and still one of wonderful music and lyrics that captured my soul 🤍 still listening on 2022. Time fly so fast.

Yes thank you! I heard Chopin's Etude Op 10 No 3 at a concert was going mad thinking the pianist was playing the opening of the Count of Monte Cristo.
JJ once explained he wrote the song around the piece and proceeded to play it live with an accoustic guitar.. He has different lyrics to it on another version where he sings about Chopin's heady romance. He's a clever guy and karate master hence his original links with Japan.
I... stumbled to this video again out of chance. Got hit with the most intense feeling of nostalgia and melancholy of my way, way younger self seeing this for the first time. Thank you for uploading and bringing back my memories.

Has a double meaning:
The first being the count and how he was naive with love for Mercedes, and how he thought that nothing can separate them
The second is after everything happened and now he has made a complicated and meticulous plan to take revenge, knowing that nothing will stop him from exacting justice

***** I know I'm responding to a 9 month old comment, but I feel the need to clear this up. Monte Cristo is about revenge, but a big plot point is that Dantés was in love with a woman (I can't remember her name), but his best friend Fernand betrayed him to the aristocrat-run legal system before they could be married and later married the woman himself. If you listen all the way through, it's obvious that the song is about Dantés' love interest and betrayal by his friend.
The 1400 page long unabriged book reveals how much his vast fortune was, an astonishing 75 MILLION francs!!! That is unheard of... he would be richer than the Rothschilds, probably the richest man that ever lived. I have every version that has ever come out... this manga was amazing and retelling was epic!
G. I. Ortega C. His girlfriend's name was Mercedes Igualdala BTW. She was a Catalan fishergirl who was Fernand Mondego's cousin. He married her 3 months after betraying Dantes to the French legal system and they he went off to war soon thereafter. He came under the good graces of the sultan Ali Pasha and betrayed him soon thereafter to the Turks at Yanina. Since he was the only man of his unit left it was up to him to relay what had happened and he painted himself off as a hero, even though he murdered Ali Pasha and sold his wife and daughter Haydee into sexual slavery. He returned to France a war hero and was a nobleman, the Count of Morcerf, and joined the French parliament as a peer of France. The Count did an EXCELLENT job destroying Morcerf, as he did to the rest of his enemies.

Plantit By far the best translation I have ever come across of " The Count of Monte Cristo " is the 1188 page Everyman's Library Version with a foreword by Umberto Eco ( of " The Name of the Rose " fame ). It is a MASTERPIECE. Nothing is left out and I do mean NOTHING. It literally describes a 19th-century France that is not there anymore, and it is a work of art. It even lists Monte Cristo's fortune ( estimated at 50 MILLION Francs! Can you imagine how much 50 MILLION Francs bought back then, how much it would be worth now???!!! He'd be even richer than a Rothschild! Anyway, it is written in a beautiful English translation by a man named Peter Washington that is eloquent, flairful, and full of panache. Go buy it and enjoy the Count of Monte Cristo all over again. :)

I watched this anime well over six/seven years ago and it still stands as probably my favorite anime I’ve ever watched. I have many favorites, but this has definitely always been in the top. I love this song - so sweet, but with so much underlying mystery.
