China was very generous toward India on the border issues because at the time in China's view both China and India were victims of the West imperialism. They should unite with each other against the West oppression. What surprised China was that India inherited the British colonism and tried to become new colonists. It was rumored that before Mao decided to counter Nehru's border incursion, he sat there for hours trying to understand why Nehru would try to take advantage of China and continue the British colonist path.

The 1970 book by Neville Maxwell, "India's China War" makes a similar claim viz. that China offered Nehru a quid pro quo - recognition of Chinese suzerainty over Aksai Chin in exchange for recognition of Mc Mahon Line by China in the Eastern Sector. However, Nehru did not go along with the idea. Maxwell did not have the material that Mr. Bhasin has had access to, but China gave a hint that it was in agreement with Maxwell's view. Mr. Bhasin reinforces with solid documentation what was a hypothesis all along - that India's stand against China is bereft of logic, historical evidence or cartographic exactitude. Kudos to Mr. Bhasin for bringing this to the public domain.

Neville Maxwell blames Forward Policy for the war. He is dead wrong. This policy was instituted in November 1961, war started on October 20, 1962. By this time China had close to one hundred thousand troops in the Himalayas and heavy equipment which China could not have done in 11 months. India Brigadier John Dalvi was taken prisoner by the Chinese, his minders of the same rank told him the war was planned in 1959. Nehru's own colleagues who had no clue of military affairs were his worst enemies, they did not let him negotiate and blocked funds for arms purchase quoting principles of Gandhi who despite his non-violence was a hard core realist advising Col. LP Sen to fight in Kashmir as it was a just cause. Nehru's colleagues who were unrealistic were Rajaji, Kriplani, GB Pant, Morarji Desai, Rajendra Prasad who were not tuned into geopolitics and stopped Nehru from give and take.

@@ranjitbarot7858 it was India's forward position policies that triggered the war in 1962 and unfortunately the two countries could not settle the border dispute inspite of the war. China did offer to give up the claim on eastern sector in exchange for India accepting aksai Chin in the western sector which India did not even control which India did not accept. The background information between 1959 to 1962, is that China was suffering from famine and that both USSR and USA were hostile to China, while India enjoyed the support from both superpowers. Importantly, Mao was almost sidelined due to big leap policy in China. Nehru wanted to take advantage of China's weak position to achieve his territory gain with China. In essence, Nehru was over confident about and overestimated Indian strength vis-a-vis Chinese, or to say that Nehru under estimated Chinese will and strength.
Today India again becomes a favorite of USA and the West. Hope history will not repeat itself and that India not make the same mistake second time by overestimate its own strength and underestimate Chinese by being provocative in the border with China.

Indians tend to give the good talk but the work itself generally doesn't really turn out to be as good as what they portray in speech whereas Chinese tend to not be as flowery with their speech but let their actions and results do the talking instead.

It was China who consistently presented to India great offers to once and for all quash the border disputes. But even if one side is rational and reasonable, as long as the other party, in this case India, is behaving irrationally, nothing can be done. One most important point was completely missed why China attacked India in 1962??It was same situation for India between USA and China as today Ukrain is facing.West was giving aid to India to support Tibet revolution and contain Communists.Even in 1959 India gave refuge to Dalai Lama.Mao tried to stop any "supply" to Tibet from India borders by putting border under soldiers eye.Nehru in response gave orders to counter them. This situation enraged Mao and he vowed to teach India and specially Nehru a lesson.
One benefit of doubt I want to give Nehru is that perhaps he had no other choice other than taking USA side because India was under deep need of funds.

One is forced to conclude that, since Nehru was no idiot, or an illiterate. It can now, in retrospect, be safely concluded that he had been bought over, or manipulated into doing all those things that are attributable to him.
Many of the coterie that surrounded him also seem to have given him advice on the China issues, which was outright disastrous for the country.
It will therefore be a wonderful lead to investigate and establish, albiet by investgative journalists, the nexus of Nehru and his coterie of bureaucrats with their handlers.

The Sino-Indian War was fought during his term, in which the Indian Army fared poorly. Thapar resigned during the last stages of the war, handing charge to Lt. Gen. J. N. Chaudhuri - FROM WIKIPEDIA)

And, as mentioned by Mr. Bhasin, if there is no evidence to support our claim on Aksai Chin, it is best to return it to China. The problem with this lingering border issue doesn't only affect India/Indian ppl, it also adversely impact China/Chinese, in addition, this can be exploited by the US to further damage Sino-India relationship.
India and China are neighboring countries for thousand years, which won't change, both are huge and populous, there are no inherent threats against each other. China has never treated India as a rival or threat (b/c rationally it shouldn't be). It's ridiculous to keep the border issues going, it doesn't benefit anyone except for maybe the US exploiting it.

    1. Bhasin has done a great service to us indians and we should thank him for this dedicated effort based on the archives. 2. This book informs us about the facts of the matter but will also help Chinese to blow their trumpet. 3. Nehru is now once for all, thoroughly discredited. 4. Wish someone writes a similar book on J&K so that we can finally bury his ghost for ever. 5. Modi now has a tough job on hand but he is handling it very well. Various agreement with the Chinese like 1993 one etc should be the basis for settlement of border issue with the Chinese. Luckily, he has Jai Shankar to help him out. 6. Bhasin should hold a seminar for the cabinet on this and also for the MPs. This will help create a right atmosphere n consensus in the country. Forget Nehru and Congress but how to resolve the issue going forward, given the facts of the case from 1947. 7. Thanks to Karan for the interview. Unfortunately, he could not get anything to malign Modi in this interview. 8. Sadly, Neville Maxwell is proved right today!! We Indians should hang our head in shame for the kind of leaders we had. So called uncouth Chinese leaders very far more intelligent, cunning, foresighted and rationale than our dear Barrister Chacha Nehru. 9. Nepal is now making the same mistake on Kalapani etc. as Nehru did..to unilaterally decide the border! Hope the history does not repeat and Nepal gets it from India!!

British drew some line on the map, but didn't control the area or enforced it on anyone. Burma and Pakistan negotiated with China, some give & take. Only India insist on claiming Brit colonial line. Worse, even claiming western sector where Brits never claimed, Askai Chin.
Another important point is Tibet. India wanted Tibet or as a buffer state. That's the reason India rejected Zhou's land swap offer in Delhi. How you think Dalai could easily cross into India? Why Tibetan regiment in Indian army?
Dispute is entirely India's own decision. Not British or the West.

To all those criticizing Jawaharlal Nehru for rejecting Zhou Enlai's swap offer in Aksai Chin and Tawang, let me mention that it is very easy to judge in hindsight. Put yourself in Nehru's shoes at that time and think. Read some of my points below.
    1. Nehru had approached the U.N. over the Jammu and Kashmir issue with Pakistan despite the Indian military gaining a decisive upper hand against the invaders and the Pakistani military in the 1947-48 War, because of which Pakistan continues to occupy one-third of the erstwhile princely state . Today, we vehemently criticize Nehru for his poor decision. Maybe he felt it was right in approaching the U.N. as per the situation in 1947-48. But it has proven to be a blunder in hindsight and we continue to suffer because of that.
    2. India's recapturing of the Hyderabad princely state and Goa through military actions proved to be good, swift decisions and might have given Nehru a shot in the arm.
    3. Learning from the outcomes of his government's decisions on J&K, Hyderabad and Goa, Nehru may have thought that taking a tough stance over the Indo-China dispute would bear fruitful results. Contrary to what he had done against Pakistan, Nehru refused to budge and give away even an inch of what his government perceived to be Indian territory. At the same time, he had never imagined that the Chinese would launch an all-out ground assault and so, the Indian Army's readiness was extremely poor.
    4. Zhou Enlai's swap offer was informal and there is no official document about it. Also, Nehru had become suspicious of China's intentions in the late 1950s and the early 1960s. So, it is quite likely that he doubted Enlai's informal swap offer and did not fall for Enlai's possible trap. If today we praise Modi for taking hard stance, in hindsight we cannot criticize Nehru for doing the same.
Now, in the hindsight you can either criticize Nehru for going soft over Jammu and Kashmir against Pakistan and not resolving the matter then and there itself, or criticize him for not going soft over Aksai Chin against China. We cannot criticize him on both fronts. It is extremely unfair to pin him down for every bad decision in hindsight.
We must remember that since 1949 when the Communist China came into being, this country has never compromised with even an inch of its territory in its disputes with any of its neighbors. It tricks its neighbors into ceding its claimed territories by creating artificial disputes as a bargain to swap territories. The victim country does not realize that it has been conned by China and that the territory which it (the victim) has kept in the bargain was never really in dispute, but was artificially created by China to gobble up the entire territory it actually claimed. So, China is never to be trusted and Nehru was right in maintaining his firm stance. Let's be fair in our assessment looking back.

The things was Nehru firmly refuse to negotiated with China for the border and said "India's territory is not negotiable", if the Chinese says the same thing as Mr. Nehru's, what else could happan? A war!
the Chinese fought the British, the Japanese, the Americans in Korea, and the Russians on the board, why did Mr. Nehru suppose the Chinese won't fight Indians?
