- After picking up the AS-V protective from CCM my first impressions are from the shin guards and deserved the first review. They are protective but have a real nitpick that knocks down their quality.

I've been looking for shin guard reviews lately, and you are literally the only channel on YT giving proper reviews. The rest are all shops to just giving commercial overviews. Thanks for being the only helpful shin guard review channel on the net!
You’re welcome. Working on expanding this as I go. Just need to build it to point I can do more gear
I can say most of what you’ve said is pretty much spot on. I play D and have been using these for a few months now. The top strap was a little annoying at first but really it’s nice that it’s not elastic cause I’ve had no issues with the shin pad twisting. I do use tape in the tape groove tho. I will say…. I’ve blocked dozens of shots with these and if I didn’t hear the clunk of the puck from hitting me I would never even know I blocked the shot. Really phenomenal protection there.
Yeah the protection was just top notch perfect for a d for sure.
Dude - I’ve really seen some nice progression in your videos. You hit on some really great points that can help people make informed purchase decisions. Keep up the nice work!
Thanks I’m glad making an effort for quality. Appreciate the support you always have.
Great review as always. You really balanced having a personal perspective on what you like personally and how these shins truly are for the right player. Looking forward to more info on the asv line from you
Thanks Adam, appreciate that feedback. Will continue to try and balance it for all the protective!
Great video review! Excited to see how you like the pants and gloves next. I will be upgrading both this Summer and I'm looking at the AS-V for pants and gloves and the Warrior Covert QR5 glove looks interesting as well. FYI Warrior has just released the new Covert sticks as well.
Yes just got word the sticks arrived at the hockey shop. Just no p28 curve yet! Supply issues suck !
I think you're the first to release a review of AS-V protective from CCM, and it's definitely a review I've been anticipating. As most other players I always end up struggling with overall fittness of shin and elbow protective, and this usually leads to modifications like:
- straps (reinforcements, additional velcro, reinforcements of seams)
- pads (apply liquid cloth rubber to keep the protective from moving when sweating)
- etc.
Trying to get them all out as fast I can but of course need games for best review possible so not to concerned if someone is before me and it’s junk haha. Yah we really shouldn’t have to do that with top end stuff but sometimes you have to if you like certain features that it has but the make or break is just the one strap etc. for these if you need protective shins ( like as a Defenceman) maybe worth it. For a forward probably better options
only 2 elbows in this world that never move and are a joy to wear: 1- newest Warrior LX Pro (the sleeved one), and STX RX3 Elbow (sleeved one). You'll never go back to any other elbow. And yes this channel and reviews are awesome!!!
@@byronbrown5838 I will have to check out the stx. Didn’t know they had elbows thanks eh!
STX rx3 are so awesome light
I like the sleeve and top strap
They feel better with short sleeve t-shirt
@@wariatosss I’ve heard stx makes good protective
Love the review. Very informative!
Glad you liked it!
Great review! I also have a pair of older super tacks shin guards and Ive experienced all of the same disikes you did with the AS-V's. I cant wait to see the review of the hyperlites!
So not much has changed from
Originals! Interesting!
I have a pair of AS-1 shins. They are almost identical to the AS-V including the strapping system. I will say that personally I don't have an issue with the fit, however, I can see how that behind the knee strap is annoying.
@@phillipthompson5027 yah fit is nice super comfy and padded but man that back strap is junk and should be better on the top end shin. I can see it on the first level and cheap ones sure
As you said the strapping issues are personal. My CCM shins fit me really well. I’ve never had any issues with the way it’s strapped although I do think the Bauer may be better. I like how thick the lower strap is and the adjustability of it makes it so I can really get it snug. The top strap was annoying at first but I quickly got used to it and it doesn’t move around. With tight socks I never even tape my shins. I’m an over the tongues guy for reference. Yeah they are bigger and bulkier but the protection is definitely there. I also have big calves so maybe that’s why they fit so well. I have a hard time fitting into the slimmer Bauer lines. Great vid.
Yeah my calves are small so definitely helps if you got them big calves!
Perfect review!
Thanks KB always love your support
Your reviews are the best. I couldnt do better
Kind comment appreciate it a lot
I have played hockey since I was a baby in Montreal and in the upstate NY area and have been in my family hockey shop since age 12, and I really appreciate your opinions.
Thanks I appreciate that
Might need these to deal with all the Ashl ppl that seem to love to break their sticks on my shins… love the review btw
It’s because you’re a top scorer man, it’s brutal eh. Constantly getting slashed hooked, hit its loads of fun lol I feel you’re pain!
Great review. I picked up the ccm xf pro shin guard.
I’ve used the one90 supreme the ultra sonic and the nexus 8000 shin guards in the past. I was looking for something not a low profiled as the ultra Sonic’s but not as bulky as the nexus 8000. The asv and xf shins seem to be the happy medium between the two. I also hate taping my socks
Yeah these are protective as hell and I’m guessing the xf is similar
Looking forward to the elbow review
Probably 1-2 weeks
At the bottom, there is a small pad you are supposed to remove if you wear your tongue inside. It's velcro and comes out quickly. Makes a difference with your nitpick on that area sticking out.
I did and was still to large unfortunately but yeah helps a bit
@@beerleaguebumhockeyreviewsDo actually wear your shin pads over the tongue? You said you wear them in, yet had both pads behind the tongue, which would be if you wear your skates with the tongue out.
@@AT2Productions this review is forever ago, but I wear my tongues out and use slightly shorter shin pads. I don’t like my tongues under my shins hampers mobility
I have the 9080's, my only issue with them is the wrap part on the side gets undone if I'm not careful pulling socks up (well and they're a bit bulky but I play D when I skate out)
Unsure differences on the 9080 but the as-v pro is unimpressive
Nice video as usual! I got the chance to take a look at those shin pads last weekend. Honestly, they seem like the AS1 pads, but in black and with a slightly different liner design. They didn’t work for me. Also, that knee donut cut out is actually pretty abrasive after only a little bit of skating. But as you mentioned, it’s all subjective. I’ll be sticking to my pro stock RBK pads until they wear out.
I hate changing shins as I mentioned so like you will not be gaming them and changing! For now maybe the hyperlite! How’s the skates going?
@@beerleaguebumhockeyreviews As I mentioned in my other response to you, you’ll need the profile, but the Jetspeeds are a superior performing skate in my opinion. Of course they need to fit you properly, but they’re really great. You can actually feel the benefits of the one piece boot. They are incredibly stiff, however. You’re probably looking at 1.5 months of actual break in time although they’ll be comfortable much sooner. They wrap and support my particular foot better than the Hyperlite and thus provide more lateral stability. It’s good for my power skating technique. Based upon how you skate, I think you’ll like the Jetspeed or maybe Ribcor better than the AS5 pro. The flexibility of the Hyperlite closely matched the Ribcor but I think the Jetspeed is a faster boot. The Mach (if it’s like the ultrasonic) will be a power skate and not quite as good for agility. But profiling the steel could be key for all of them.
@@mongillohockey surprised actually I never notice break in on skates should be interesting to see how I feel with them. Hyperlite and 2xpro I was all good a few shifts in lol
did you ever test out the feature for tongues in vs out? On the inside of the pad it has an adjustment depending on your preference
Yes didn’t change the issue of it sticking out
They do look pretty bulky. Thanks for the review. As always, good info!
Thanks for the kind words
Great video as always. Could you review the Bauer supreme 3x pro shin guards? I use them currently.
I use the 2xpro and enjoy them. But I’m mostly sticking to newer gear so I stay on top of releases now. Cheers
Thanks for replying back. Awesome videos and great information
@@dariuskowalik9862 I appreciate it and try my best to respond to everyone sometimes RUclips doesn’t give me the notification for whatever reason!
You could definitely do some sound treatment on your room to prevent the reverb. Good videos btw.
Thanks. This one a bit older I have pads on the wall now
Will have to try putting on the pads and letting my wife beat me with the stick when she's feeling irritable. 😄
I like the level of protection but these look a little bulky for my taste. Also, the rigid knee strap seems like it could get annoying if not painful.
Have you tried Supreme shin guards? I feel like they fit me the best largely due to the 3 hinge points instead of 1. I don't know if the extra hinge below the kneecap does anything but the hinge at the ankle is pretty great for a tongue tucker like me. I get the extra coverage of going 1 size up without the kneecap riding high during strides.
I know I feel like she really had an opportunity for getting some rage out and didn’t take it haha! I like the supremes yes, had the ultrasonics at one point but sold and went with 2xpro as I really don’t need the protection and just need mobility and agility. These are large and over sized so really a Defenceman non mobile player in my opinion style.
Your wife is hilarious! But, honestly....I was clenching my teeth when you asked her to whack your shins. Great review. I've got a pair of old shin guards and here I was, thinking they were too bulky - they're a lot smaller than both your new and old shinnies. Then again, I don't block shots or play in league games anymore. How much were those new shin guards? Not sure if you mentioned it....either way, thanks for pushing out another great review video!
Yah she was hilarious I thought star in the making! 250$ I think? 935 for all of it so forgot to check individual prices lol yah older shins were not nearly as bulky if you think yours are thin compared to the 2xpro than you would think the as- v are huuuuuge lol
@@beerleaguebumhockeyreviews she WAS the star of the video! Whoa. $250 is a little crazy. I think mine were only $75, 15 years ago!! As soon as I saw the AS-V's at the beginning...I knew you were going to mention something about mobility restriction. I had when there's friction on the pants and tongue - gets you out of your groove of the game
@@owenator first two games were rough actually it’s crazy how something so small messes me up, that’s hockey players for you why dialing in your gear so important. I’ll tell her she’s a RUclips star now maybe she will come on more :P
I still got my JOFA 5090s 😂 those ASVs look sick though
Crazy but the jofa is still used everywhere so you aren’t alone!
Weird about the strapping system. The Jetspeed line anchor strap definitely is stretchy and works very well, imho. I barely even need sock tape. Could be that I think the Tack line is built to fit a little looser vs the Jetspeed line.
Yes prob. But man the one strap on the back of the leg is awful
@@beerleaguebumhockeyreviews I'll have to check it out in person. Also, my man, you totally left out the Adjustable Length calf-strap feature! That really cranks down and maybe why your shin spun off center during gameplay. And perhaps a quick blurb about the "In/Out" feature on the inside.
@@paul5739 yeah I didn’t you’re right. Hard to remember everything sometimes. Totally forgot
Great review! I play forward but block shots and they are hurting me, I´m looking forward to upgrade my shin guards and I´m between these and the Bauer Machs looking for maximum protection but I dont want to compromise mobility. Can you please give me your thoughts, thanks!
Mach is probably a better way to go with mobility. Or jetspeed ft6 has only a slight down grade in protection and far more stream lined
@@beerleaguebumhockeyreviews thank you so much man I really appreciate it!
@@anthoniosmith no prob
Tongue-in usually means the tongue goes under the shin pad. Is that what you meant? It's clear that if you flop the tongue the CCM's will push the tongue out further.
The bottom of the shin is very large and bulky if you have tongue outside the shin it’s very bulky and tight on the top lace. If you put your tongue under the shin will better work with these large bulky bottom of the shin
I agree w Zednix. Got the terminology backwards.
I was looking on pure hockey and comparing the asv vs asv pro shins and they are literally the exact same. It is literally word for word except without the “pro” so for 50 dollars less I am inclined to go asv but do you think it is worth it to go the pro just for the peace of mind? I am a high level midget player and want the most protection but I don’t want to break the bank on shin pads either.
The tacks line is built for protection so yes you’re correct the difference between the two is minimal. I would just stick with Asv and save the $
So what I took from that is the asv is still going to be very protective because it is a tacks line but do you think the pro version is more protective? Both versions are on sale at the moment
@@ShowzyGear both are very similar and if it’s a sale would just go pro.
One question I have... are they worth the high sticker price? I'm looking for a Defensive shin pad for sure! Also, with that wider bottom, I prefer my pads over the tongue. Would that pad be better worn that way? Thank you for the review!
Yes over tongue much better for these and yes very protective. Only huge grip is the knee strap is really uncomfortable so you need to have a solid sock that goes up that high.
Those nitpicks are typical things of CCM shin guards.
And I'll happily take them off your hands :)
(And like one of my other comments, I live near Langley, so no shipping...)
I almost have to at this point you make a hard sell haha. 200 subs to go…
I go for the more protective bulky gear because I am not a pro and no one is paying me if I get hurt playing.
That’s a good strategy to have
I think you got the wrong size if you tuck into the tongue. You need to go down a size then adjust the internal piece at the bottom.
I go tongues out. Always run 14.
Hey man, great stuff for us beer-leagers...really great reviews...have you had a chance to check out the CCM AS-V skates yet? ...cheers...great channel!
Thank you truly appreciated. Unfortunately no my local hockey store sent everything back and have not got a chance to get in them
With the holder issue. It’s next on my list when available though
@@beerleaguebumhockeyreviews no worries...just curious as I'm looking to move on from my 2014 Top level Tacks...and curious about em.. unfortunately, in Tucson AZ.. we have NOTHING in terms of shops...makes trying stuff out...incredibly hard...
@@GeoffSweet oh man that’s brutal. Yah I generally don’t recommend these unless you’re a Defenceman and like really big protective shins. Prefer the FT4pro or the hyperlite
@@beerleaguebumhockeyreviews I'm more of a Johnny hockey size...5' 7" 170...
@@GeoffSweet yah not idea these are massive. I’m 5’9 195 and they just to much I prefer stream lined gear
I don’t like the hyper lite helmets cause the liner is too hard and not so comfortable
The hyperlite helmet is awful
Great review boomer when you doing elbows. RUDDSY
Thanks Ruddsy! Really getting to hear from this community and all the support been awesome. Well the shoulders were out of stock so didn’t wanna do them without shoulders to complete the ensemble lol so maybe last. Pants next I think.

@@sleepingpanda8927 I’m glad. I’ll keep doing as best I can!
Ccm protective is terrible now. The top strap not having neoprene to stretch is a clown move by ccm. Can’t believe that did that to the strap. Awful gear
Yeah was disappointing and not greatly comfortable
First
Because I am just better
lol appreciate the reactiveness!!
Way way too heavy. Shin guards need to be as light as possible.
Well as mentioned in the video depends on your game, level of play and need. I wouldn’t be rocking my light stream lined hyperlite in high end semi or pro hockey that’s for sure. The asv is that level
Of play protection.
@@beerleaguebumhockeyreviews your video is for beer league, most guys can’t even shoot hard. I played in beer leagues over 40 years and I can get buy with no shoulder pads and the cheapest lightest pants n shin pads to do the job. Most protection you need is from crashing and falling imo.
@@Seektruth-59 yes but I review gear in general and it’s pros and cons. That’s why I compare to hyperlite since those are very light and stream lined pads. You are mostly right but depending on what level of beer league I can definitely shoot hard so I wouldn’t wanna be wearing nothing against me ;)
@@beerleaguebumhockeyreviews most beer leaguers at any level should be rocking the lightest possible gear period - Hyperlight or Jetspeed are expensive yes but offer way more protection than needed at those levels of play. The extra overall weight savings is much more beneficial. In fact for a pro or semipro player, I would wear the heaviest protective gear in practice and the lightest in a game situation for strength and conditioning. Long ago I wore Jofa everything and one day it hit me how heavy my bag was and switched to some very light gear and boy, what a difference it made.
@@Seektruth-59 I never weighed the two shins but would be interesting to know the weight difference
Ive used alot of shin pads over the years. Theres nothing wrong with any of these. Be a man and tape up. Complaining gone!
This is a review posting good and bad of the shins. That’s the point I’m not just gonna “tape up” I’m going to explain the pros and cons of the shins and allow the viewer to make a decision on what they prefer
