Optoma HD26 DLP Projector Repair Noisy and Shuts Down

  • I picked up this Optoma HD26 from a guy who had bought a new lamp for it but the new lamp didn't work. He decided that was his excuse to get a new projector so I bought this off him for $50 plus shipping.
    Upon receipt, I first tried it and the color wheel was making an awful noise. Not a grinding but a weird squealing/chirping noise. This is common when it can't regulate it's speed for one reason or another.
    In this case, the problem was due to heat. The foam under the color wheel has become loose and curled upwards. This caused it to be cut into the color wheel and the index mark came off as well. Once the index mark fell off, the color wheel position sensor was no longer doing anything.
    No new lamp would have solved this.
    In the past I have used Marks-a-lot markers to replace missing index marks or stickers from other color wheels that no longer work. I happened to have another projector in the scrap pile that had some un-used high temp black tape. I cut of a tiny bit and fit it to the wheel as you will see.
    I don't know what kind of tape it is though. I would love to know. If you happen to know adhesives or tapes, and have an idea on where I can source this sort of thing, please let me know.
    Everything I have learned about repairing projectors has come from trial and error as well as reading the service manuals. I also learn a lot from other hobbyists out there who take a stab at repairing these. Hopefully someone has some insight on the tape. It seems trivial but it might save others some hassle.
    I still ended up ordering a new color wheel. This one had been over-spun so many times, I think it's noisy, or at least noisier than it should be. Plus it was only $30 shipped from California.
    Let me know if you are interested in seeing another color wheel replacement for this HD26.
    I did put a new lamp in. That made a lot of difference in the image. The old lamp had 3700+ hours in. That is worth replacing.
    Here is the lamp if you need one: www.purelandsu...
    Lastly, if you are in the market for a 3D compatible 1080 projector, let me know.
    This one is for sale. The new color wheel will be installed this upcoming week. I'm asking $250 plus shipping. No remote unfortunately. They are going for $300 plus shipping on flea-bay. If you want one, give a shout.
    Thanks for watching!

      Hi! thankyou! Let me ask, what prompted the replacement of the old bulb? Did it act the same way or did it explode or something else? Also, did you buy what you would consider a good quality bulb or possibly was it from amazon? A lot of knockoff lamps litter the internet and believe it or not they can be the root cause.
      Do you hear any weird noises when it tries to start?

    Excellent video. Thank you. I replaced the color wheel with no problem. And now the bulb doesn't work. Just received a new bulb, and it doesn't work either. Any thoughts, assuming it isn't the new bulb? Everything goes on - the fan and power and then the indicator for failed lamp after three cycles on my Optoma HD26.

      Hi Eric, Did the bulb work before you charged the wheel? My guess is a wire might not be seated all the way. either the color wheel sensor or the ballast. If you had light before the wheel was replaced, double check your work and I bet you find something easy. That is what usually happens to me at least.

      It does. You should see the wheel spin 3 times before the lamp LED flashes. Make sure the cable is the right way around. The conductors go towards the board.

    Hi Frank, thanks for all the videos you do. I have the optoma gt750 and the color wheel was loud and dmd chip was going showing white spots on the screen. I got the parts and followed along and changed the dmd chip and color wheel today, however when I put everything back together and turned on the machine my screen just shows a shadow and does not project the optoma logo or any image.
    Hoping you can lend some helpful tips as to why this would happen. I thought maybe the new parts were no good so swaped them back to the original and came up with the same dark shadow with the 6 spots showing up. When I turn on the media player nothing comes up there either. I really am stuck trying to trouble shoot what could have happened . Hope to hear from you soon.

    We are having some issues with our optoma projector, we changed the lamp on October of 2020 and then started to show a message saying the lamp was expired so we requested a warranty and the replacement arrived today but when I put the new lamp is still not working and I realized that the fan works and the color wheel too but it doesn’t run at the same time because the color wheel runs and when it stops is when the fan runs I would really like to see how to take it out to see if the actual problem is the color wheel or try to figure out what else can be.
    Thanks!

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  3 года назад +1

      Hi Karla! A few things. The message you saw was actually not because of the lamp. Your projector has a lamp timer that needs to be reset when the lamp is changed. If not, it counts the time that old lamp had applied to it. The projector has no way to know the lamp was changed. Until you reset that timer via the menu, (check your manual) the message will continue to appear.
      What is your model #? Was the lamp assembly original inside? (Osram/Philips)? Lastly, what are the LED's doing when the projector errors out? Many times the problem is a sub standard replacement lamp assembly. You can end up chasing a wild goose. I would not worry about the color wheel or fan just yet until we determine the lamp quality and what the LEDs on the projector are doing.

      Actually the lamp we got to replace the original was a generic brand named Araca and they gave us warranty, the original brand exploded and before that was heating up pretty bad.
      The lamp replacement we got after the original exploded lasted 6 months and was working good but from one day to another it stop working we turned on the projector and just keeps flashing the blue light and makes a weird noise on the area of the color wheel.
      The model is Gt1080 I guess because on the projector base only says dlp projector display

      If you want to email me a video of the noise, I can likely tell you if it's the wheel. These seem to have a problem where the wheel spins but the little sticker will come off. That makes the wheel spin too fast as it searches for the missing index mark. New color wheels are pretty cheap. I bet it has the same exact problem as this one. Is the noise kind of similar?

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  2 года назад

      I will be a video on routine maintenance soon. The reason I open many of these is because people do not do simple maintenance when it is new. In your situation, I think as long as you use a vacuum cleaner with a brush/bristle attachment, and run it across the air vents, the amount of internal dust will be kept to a minimum.
      If you are able, you should remove the lamp assembly, then use the wand attachment to clean inside the lamp basket.
      It may even prevent the need to even open it for an internal cleaning. I think doing a simple cleaning every season would be ideal. But in reality, I think twice a year is okay with modern projectors. They have more space for airflow inside it seems.
      I owned an HD26 for a while(this one in the video) and it was a wonderful projector. I hope that answers your question. Thanks for watching!

The easiest way I can think of to see if the wheel is the issue would be to shut the projector off and listen for a change in the vibration. The CW will stop but the cooling fan should run for a little bit longer.

      Hi Marcelo, it does sound like a color wheel, aside from the line. I've never seen a vertical line caused by a color wheel. That said it might be a visual artifact of the wheel error.

Also include a picture of the old fan to help them verify the correct part. lubricating the hub might be an option but if its making noise, it might be too far gone. These use a single fan for both cooling and exhaust so that fan is more critical than in other models.

      that is pretty new for finding that part. Optoma is the only source I know of for now. In a few more years there will be after sales options but as of now I cant think of any.

    Hi! Can you maybe help me; where could I buy a new color wheel, because after watching this very good tutorial I found at, that mine is broken and I think that causes the problem. Do you know any shop I can buy it? Thank you for your help!

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  3 года назад +1

      eBay is a good source but depending on your country, the stock might be limited. I also use a company out of China called Time Projector. You can email them at gydz@timeprojectorlamp.com Be sure to include a picture of your color wheel.
      One suggestion you may want to try. Another viewer suggested using black enamel paint to replace the mark that falls off. It might be worth a shot if that is your issue. If the motor is bad, then you still want to replace the color wheel.

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  Год назад

      No its not. It was literally the problem with this projector. The color wheel starting noise is totally different. If this noise was normal, the projector would have been working.

      CHIRPY sound AT THE END OF THE VIDEO, when the projector is repaired, is normal. That is what I meant. Of course the sound at the beginning of the video is the problem with the projector in the first place.

    Hey Frank I have an epson 3700, the power and lamp lights blink when turned on. Fans run but no picture, any ideas

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  4 года назад

      Hi Capt! Both are flashing? That would make me think one of the fans might not be spinning. There are 4 or 5 in that model I believe. How old is the lamp?

    • @captwoodchuck5456
      @captwoodchuck5456 4 года назад

      @@FixitFrank correction it's the status and lamp lights both. When the power button is pressed the fan run they sound normal for about 10 to 15 seconds, then they run at high speed after which both lights flash. This happened before so I replaced the lamp ( did not solve problem). Both lamps have less than 150 hrs. This problem was intermittent now its constant. I have replaced the ballast no difference. Thank you for your response

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  4 года назад

      Interesting. That model does have a dynamic iris. They can get stuck. Unfortunately Epson service info is hard to find. The "internal" error you are getting can mean many things. Since it was intermittent, I am leaning towards a possibly stuck or sticking iris. I have a video on Auto Iris' in here somewhere. Not specifically for the 3700 but the theory is the same. I would probably start there. The error most likely means,"something is preventing the lamp from starting". Meaning there are many sensors and circuits that need to be in a specific state before the lamp will ignite. If you have 380dc on the input to the ballast, then your power supply is ok. If you read less than that(150-300dc) you have a power factor correction issue in the main power supply. That can also be a cause. Did you happen to check any of the FETs on the old ballast?
