It took a year of so for their self Titled debut to make an impact even with the support of Axil Rose, who was also from Lafayette Indiana and a very good friend of Shannon's older sister and friend of Shannon's as well. When Shannon took off to LA to get a band together after high school, his sister asked Axil to keep an eye on him for her and Axil very much did that. Guns and Roses were at their popularity Azimuth at that time and they let Blind Melon open ALot of big venues for them, but the public had to find the exceptional songwriting, musicianship and vocals on their own and after the record had been out about a year with constant touring, suddenly the people caught on and it turned into a must have album selling 3 million copies. Triple Platinum is no small achievement for any band much less the first record from an unknown bunch of guys from the Midwest and deep south gelling in LA. I loved these guys from the moment l
I borrowed my roommates cassette when I was testing tires over the road in a fleet of Chevy Lumina's at night while in college at Kent State in 1992-93. I listened to that cassette over and over and over. It is still one of my favorite records and I've learned most of the songs on it on guitar. They are not underatted, just short lived. Pretty damn tragic like ALot of the other great bands of that era. I'm 4onths older than Shannon and Ii just turned 57. So he'd have been 56 turning 57 in September as of this weighting. I lived hard as well and feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to experience this life into my 50's. There are no guarantees. I didn't really come to terms with myself of find inner peace or convictions until I was well into my 40's. Emotional maturity took aLot of work. Still working at it.we are all tragically flawed as Humans, every one of us. So I start every day telling myself that fact and from thereO am able to give myself a break and give all other humans a break because we all make mistakes all the time and all we can do is get back in the saddle and forgive again

Well, I would not say ahead of time, but they just did their own thing and enriching music their own way with amazing string work and multi-instrumentalization by Christopher Thorn and amazing support with Roger. The lyrics were so pure and powerful. Some Blind Melon songs take you through a journey tightly packed in a short 3 to 4 minute song, for me thats Paper Scratcher, St. Andrews Fall, Change etc.
Its really fucking cool. Out of all early musician deaths, Hoon I believe it has to be top 3 out of all. That should not have happened.

There is a pic of him sitting on the floor real close to the camera and he has his chin on what looks like a tv or something and he a big smile on his face. Cracks me up. He had an infectious smile and laugh. I recently re-discovered Blind Melon and it has inspired me to pick the guitar back up after almost 20 years. Listening to him play guitar on the acoustic songs that were posted by his mother (I think) really touched a nerve with me. I cant believe he has been gone for so long. I hope that when he arrived they moved Elvis' time slot back and put Shannon in his place. RIP SH you crazy mother' you are missed by millions.

It was on Nico Blue, but I did get to see them play it at Wood Stock when I was 18 years old, and a shit load of acid and wearing a fucking bumble costume. Not the like the little girl in the video tho. It was a home made bumble bee costume my mother made back in the 80's that looked the John Belushi killer Bee costume from SNL. Like the Mexican Bee from the Simpson. I had the antennas and all. I got so close to the stage. I still can't find myself on any of the wood stock videos tho, but I must have taken a couple hundred pictures no doubt.

This music makes me feel peculiar. It brings back past emotions I haven't felt in a long time. As I am moving forward with my life I tend to lose all my previous situations and feelings. For some reason this music is connected to strange part of my life where I didn't know what to do and didn't want to do anything. I listened to the albums before he died intensely during this time. Its rare that music brings me to a certain place with mixed feelings. I think its the tone of everything.

Blind Melon was one of the most underrated bands of the 90's; No Rain was just the tip of the iceberg. If you haven't done so already, then you should definitely listen to all their material front to back, you'll find so much more to their sound. RIP Shannon, you're a legend sir.
Off topic: I can't believe they had e-mail back then. Ex: at 55:24... wow! How far we've come eh? lol

Been listening to this band alot lately. Everyone speaks of Hoon so highly, but this band as a whole is just fucking amazing! When ever asked, who's your favorite band? My first response is Stevie Wonder, but I hesitate some times and think..... well then there's Blind Melon. Regardless. Such good musicianship among these cats. RIP Shannon.

YES that is so true. But can't you see how irreplaceable he was? Its even more tragic than one realizes until looking at these guys and seeing how good they ALL are, and imagining how Shannen would've wanted them to find a replacement so they could carry on. But you just cant replace that much awesome.

Saw them play live 11 times, last time at the Metro Chicago show less than a month before Shannon left us.
As beautiful as it is to watch this....its painful especially after reading their biography and seeing how out of his mind Shannon was at this point on drugs. They were magic and his loss is and will forever be heartbreaking

That evening the Radio Station played all the Hits thru the speakers on Top of the Radio Van and about 1000 of us Danced in the street.

Wow.. 11 times. That's incredible. For whatever reason I never new when they were coming to town (I lived in the Cleveland area then) so I saw them only once, in the gym of a small university on the near east side of town. It was hot and miserable that night and the gym didn't have any real AC or ventilation system. Shannon was blitzed out of his mind and clearly uncomfortable physically, but still put on an amazing performance, as did the entire band.
All that said.. they have always been and will always be one of my favorite bands. I think they are to this day still tragically underappreciated. Like you said - they were magic, and his loss will forever be heartbreaking.

Shannon lived 90% of the songs . He drew from life for inspiration which made him vulnerable but so relatable. One of the best song writers ever ! Imagine if he was still here . Those songs would be deep and I know for sure he would have had a masterful one on recovery and looking back on that life. The dead loved Shannon as well. Zack Wylde even said how amazing Shannon was and is .

Plus, the whole band was getting to play their newest material to a TV studio full of Canadian teenagers, not to mention all of the teens and 20-somethings watching it live at home. I'm sorry, but I just have to ask why this kid was never more recognised for his charisma and the superior quality of his voice. I love Maynard James Keenan's voice but can openly admit right now that Keenan on his best day never took the vocal risks or pushed his vocal dexterity to the level Shannon Hoon did on virtually every song. Plus, Hoon had a stage presence that I can only equate to performers like Freddie Mercury or Steven Tyler. How did an entertainer like David Lee Roth ever achieve such popularity when in comparison to a strung out Shannon Hoon, he looked and sounded like the third place contestant at a preschool talent show? Just saying

    • @solopico
      @solopico Год назад

David Lee Roth was popular because he had Eddie Van Halen, and their style of music was what was all the rage at that time.
I compare Shannon Hoon and Blind Melon to Jim Morrison and The Doors. Morrison was surrounded by amazing musicians. Pushed the limits of everything in life... wanted to experience it all. Took chances musically in ways nobody else would. Wrote poetically in ways much deeper and more profound than the years he'd lived. Needed an outlet for his creative edge, found it, indulged in all the excesses of his success, learned he didn't want all of that after all, and ultimately it destroyed him. All the same can be said of Shannon Hoon.
And The Doors were not the "standard" sound of their time, either, much like Blind Melon wasn't "grunge" even though they got grouped into that genre. Sure The Doors were counter-culture and anti-war, but they weren't anything like Jimi, or CCR, or Cream and anything Clapton was doing... their carnivalesque style infused with blues and jazz stylings was completely unique. Same would be true of Blind Melon. They weren't alternative, they weren't grunge, they weren't southern rock, they sure weren't metal.. they had elements of blues, classical, a little of all the rock stylings..
Anyway.. that's my two cents. ✌

    • @KyOte13

Totally Agree… Shannon was on a whole another level of talent and showmanship. He is completely underrated, as is Blind Melon, as a whole. They took musical chances and had an eclectic versatility that most bands did not, still don’t. They were far ahead of the one time. If they came out today, I think it would be a very different story.

the greatest live set I've ever seen by any band. So tight! Shannon, you truly were an angel among us bro! R.I.P

Man, check out this performance of St. Andrew's Fall!! Shannon was a solid guitar player as well, and it's not easy to play that song and sing at the same time.
