I like that already, from the minute I saw it, Size is too good, the casing is perfect when I see it according to my taste. Functions may take some time to get used to but for that smoothness, yes of course. I like this and I like how you explain all the things.
Thanks so much! I totally agree- it's by far the most compact of all the smartphone gimbals I've tried but out performs most of them :) Hope you love it!
Yes you can charge your phone from the gimbal it says so in the manual you'll need a OTG cable to do that, you can also do POV mode by pressing the power button 3 times I believe woukd have to double check that one out when I get in.
Haha I'll never get past that little miss there :-P You're totally right that it can charge the phone, though it still would be a bit difficult/awkward while using the gimbal because of the position of the port. Also, you're right about the POV mode being accessed through the power button. I can't remember offhand either if it was 2 or 3 pushes, but it definitely works like you said :)
the simplest to use the POV mode is by holding the Trigger & move Joystick Left/Right. The power button once is Sleep Mode, every two times from walk to sport to custom mode.
hi Scott, I was in the market for a gimbal when I found your vid here & I got the Vilta M. It's my first gimbal, so seeing what it does in firsthand is mind blowing. Never have I seen my videos turn out so smooth & doing it effortlessly...it is a good one, right up there with the others, IMHO. But I have a little problem when I first started it up.. seems it wont detect my phone even after the firmware update, calibration (done a few of these). It just vibrated a bit, then flops down to limp. Then I was going thru the FV app, toggled the 'Phone Detection' off.. lo & behold, the gimbal woke up & works normally as in your videos. Weird thing, but as the local distributor told me it could be an app problem so they would notify Freevision of this. Apart from that little problem, the gimbal works a treat.
Hey thanks for watching! Glad you got it, it's a fantastic gimbal :) Sorry to hear about the issue you're having though, I hope they're able to fix that, they're usually pretty good about addressing issues like that. I'd try to message them directly on Facebook too, they are typically good at responding and working with users to fix things like that :)
I can’t seem to find the app… lmao i got the gimbal from a friend and have no knowledge on it till this video, but can’t find the app. Ive looked up fv gimbal, VILTA-M gimbal, etc and its not on the app store for me😭
A great perfectly paced informative review. Sold on this gimbal from this review, so much so I have just placed my order from Amazon for delivery tomorrow....I can't wait to test drive it. Thanks for your efforts Scott.
I bought this a couple of years ago and have used it with my Nokia (Android) phone. It was good. However ... now I have an iPhone, I find out the Freevision app (FV Share) is no longer available for iOS .. very annoying 😪😪
Hi. According to the User Manual, you can charge a phone (and most other things) because the charging port is OTG. This is also stated on the support page (Q21, below Q8 where you got the info for the phone limitations). Check out the manual to confirm. Thanks.
Hey sorry for the delay in getting back to you. You're right, I initially missed that. The port can charge a phone as well but if used while using the gimbal it will make it a little tough to balance because of the location of the port and the way you'd have to run the cable.
I have to agree with Scott, a very very well made gimbal indeed. I have used mulitple gimbals in the past and build my own gimbals as well the big heavy ones 2-3 years ago. This gimbal is a combination and experiences of all the gimbals in the past combined into one. The designer has learned well and taking all aspects in making a good mobile gimbal. I will definitely going to buy this gimbal, love the compactness and the 360 rotation and long lasting battery.
Yes sir ! just found out about this gimbal and checked your channel, great review. Im waiting for the next video of the gimbal i.e time laps and different features it can do.
Haha yeah, several people have mentioned that, it is something I missed in the video and I added a note in the video description addressing it. Sorry for the confusion :)
Hi Scott. Thanks for this Exceedingly informative intro to this device and your other one on its app with such a refreshingly calm delivery! Pleasure to watch and great to be informed of a smartphone gimbal that finally has programmable gimbal movement in regular video mode! As far as I know none of the other smartphone gimbal designs out there have this programability except in Time Lapse mode! What a huge omission in all the other designs! This feature alone should sell this gimbal to many users!
Hello and thank you so much! I got your email as well and will reply soon! I agree, the ability to draw out the path in normal video is such a simple but nice thing to be able to do. I feel like they threw everything but the kitchen sink into this app and I really appreciate that. And it all works! :-D Thanks again and I will do my best to get back to your email ASAP.
...one thing extra for the solo videographer they could add to the normal video motion lapse feature would be to add a programmable timer to allow the user to step out in front of the camera before the preprogrammed gimbal movement sequence actually begins. Similar to when one wants to delay a family photo shot set up to allow the photographer enough time to step out and be in the photo too!
It's such a pleasure to come across a product that gets it right in a creative way! In the music audio world so many gadgets are designed by non musicians who always get it wrong! I'd like to think the people behind the Vilta-M are in fact videographers themselves and maybe that's why they've added this obvious feature that was missing from all the others I've seen...perhaps they'll add the timer to it too with the next update! .
I'll be sure to mention the timer to them, they seem to take recommendations fairly seriously :) Also, I'm not positive but I think the engineers are from DJI originally. Not sure the extent of how they were involved there but DJI makes fairly solid products from what I've experienced as well, and their experience definitely shows here. It's those small touches that makes a world's difference. Putting in a sensor to stop the motors burning out without a phone in it, poor balance detection and legitimately tough plastics are amazing. I really hope more people can appreciate this :)
Haha yeah, I noticed after and wish I could re-edit the video. That, or have a dollar for every time someone pointed out my miss ;) Thanks for watching and commenting! :)
@@ScottDumas Totally fair; the only time I get irked by it is when people from outside that region AFFECT that pronunciation - - my friends from New York, Boston, etc. own it. People in California 'n shit kinda bug me when they put that shit on. Thanks for being cool. And your review is AWESOME.
@@walwilliams5534 Haha I never even noticed it all that much until I moved to Japan and other people here pointed out the accent. I guess it's not too heavy overall but when it stands out it really does stand out ;-P Anyway, thanks again for watching! :)
Very well delivered review. Is it possible to put your iphone (8 for instance) in one of those battery cases and attach to the gimbal to give you extra filming time?
Thanks so much! It would definitely depend on the size of the case but it will probably be tricky since they'd most likely add too much thickness and it would no longer fit in the clamp.
have you been able to change battery?I found some information which says it’s built in and cannot be replaced! I am trying to open mine to replace it; even though, you can still use it with external power.
EXCELLENT tutorial. Do you have to hold it straight up while shooting or can you hold it horizontally (aiming forward).?? It seems that aiming it forward helps to give smoother footage while walking.
Thanks so much! I hold it at a slight angle usually, that way the tilt motor can absorb a little bit of the up and down motion (which can't be done holding it perfectly straight up). I have seen that this can sometimes make it easier to accidentally sway the whole gimbal to the left and right, but if you're careful it's given me the best results :)
For me, I prefer this one. I don't need a whole lot of extra features and the motion/reaction of this one is the most natural. Moza does well too in that regard, but the Freevision feels a bit more well made. The Smooth 4 is large and has more functions built into it, if that's what you are looking for. Vimble 2 is not bad but it's my least favorite of the bunch. Simple, just OK quality, and the motors feel a little weak compared to the others (although it can still do the job)
Thanks so much! Glad you like it, but yea- I'd definitely like to have 24fps as well. I've brought it up with Freevision in the past but will be doing so again! :)
Hey Scott! A very informative and nice review! By any chance can we convert the back camera into a selfie camera through the VILTA? Most back cameras give better picture and video quality..
hi! Thank you so much :) Yes, you can switch the front and back cameras in the app :) I have another video going over the app in detail if you'd like to check it out :) ruclips.net/video/QQ5gpk90JjY/видео.html
There are counterweights available that could fit the Vitla-M, but depending on your phone size/lens size it may or may not be enough. It's hard to say more without trying that particular combination, and the only counterweight I have experience with is from DigitalFoto.
Really great review, Scott. Your communication is calming and clear. Debating between Freevision Vilta M & DJI Osmo Mobile 2. Do you think the Vilta M will have issues with size of iPhone Xs Max?
Thanks so much! :-D I haven't tried it specifically but I think it should be able to manage it. The weight and size are within the recommended limits of the gimbal as long as you don't have it in a case or with extra accessories
Hi Scott, very nice video and i like it. I just got my Gimbal, but i found an small issue that could help for some people. when i used my wide angle lens on my LG G7 thinQ to shoot video or pictures, some portion of the adjusting knob was in the screen. So we can not use wide angle lens for some phone. at least for the LG G7 user.
@@ScottDumas thanks for the reply, I've seen some pretty good test results from stabilised footage with the vilta M - just ordered a pro! I'm just stuck for a decent audio solution alongside a gimbal. you got advice on that?
Hope you love the vilta-m pro! :) To be completely honest with you, I've never really used any mics at all for smartphones haha. If it were me though and I wanted to record some audio along with my video and really cared about quality, I might avoid the headache of balancing it and use a lav (if I'm talking) or something like the Deity D3 shotgun mounted alongside the handle and have it plugged into a small recorder in my pocket, then sync it up on the computer. Not the smallest/cheapest but an idea
Thanks so much! Yeah I did miss that haha, a few people have mentioned it since then. Although, it would still be tough to use and charge your phone while using the gimbal just because of the location. :)
Great thorough video - can this gimbal do low POV (ie holding the handle upside down) but in lock or other modes? Can this also do vertical video eg for instagram?
Hi and thanks so much! Yep, you can use the low angle, holding the handle upside down no problem in any mode :) Unfortunately the grip doesn't twist around to use vertical shooting though so you'd have to hold the whole handle out to the side to get that which would be tiring :(
Thank you for your review. I bought this gimbal a several days ago from Amazon for my Android LG V20 phone. So far everything seems to work well with FVshare (ver. 2.2.7). I wonder if there is a feature in this application to pause recording for a moment and then continue? Otherwise every time I stop recording for any reason it creates new file when I continue to film? The native recording application in the phone has this "pause" feature, which I don't see in FVshare.
Hey thanks so much for watching. Glad to hear it's working out for you so far :) Honestly- I've never heard of the ability for androids to pause recording. That's pretty cool actually and would definitely make it easier to record a video without needing to edit it after. I suspect it might be something they aren't able to access/get permission for. Either that or just no one has asked for it. I'll pass along the idea and hopefully it can be added in at some point. :)
Thank you! Yes, there is a pause feature in my phone, it's really convenient and I used it often. It's a pity they didn't incorporate this feature in their application.
hi guys, i'm use LG too, but V30. with your version FVshare app (2.2.7) what camera mode you use (1 or 2, setting of app). with my phone, mode 2 focus doens't work in time lapse, panaroma
Hi! To be completely honest I can't entirely remember without checking. You can download the FVShare app and use the camera even without being connected to the gimbal, and that should let you test that and some other parts of the app for yourself if you'd like :) I probably won't have a chance to check soon since it's the weekend, so that might be faster. Sorry!
Scott Dumas , I have did as recommended but there is no icon appeared for switching the camera while recording. I’m actually interested to know if it can switch using the gimbal’s button while recording. Most probably it will be convenience to operate in one hand rather than touching the phone screen. Anyway, I’m not in a hurry to know because I’m trying to decision between FV vilta m/pro and MOZA Mini mi/S. These work seems pretty good, feel like better than Osmo mobile 2 n others.
Hi! So I was able to check it out and it does seem that once you start recording the ability to switch front and rear cameras disappears unfortunately.
Thanks for the amazingly quick reply. My problem is this. When shooting stills of the moving chicks as well as the adults I don’t have luxury of setting up a tripod. I must hand shoot and no matter how stable you try to hold the phone you will always get vibrations and large formate pictures are never crystal clear. I can use my DSLR and deal with speed control but that defeats the small iPhone 7+ size and weight.
Hmm.. that is tricky... a lightweight monopod might be a good in between? Something that can collapse down compact enough to fit in your bag, but when you're at your location you could carry it around already set up and simply put it down on the ground when you need to snap a picture... not quite as stable as a tripod but I think it would be more stable than a gimbal like this for photos and definitely more stable than handheld. If it's for something small like an iPhone, it wouldn't need to be anything expensive or large either, just something enough to get that little bit more stability you're looking for.
Good video Scott. I'm looking for a Gimbal that will work for my Samsung Galaxy S9+ and GoPro 7 Black. Can I add any external devices, such as a mic or lights, to the handle? are there any other attachments that can be purchase for the Gimbal? Is the Gimbal waterproof or resistance? Thanks in advance.
Thanks so much :) There aren't any additional screw threads besides on the bottom, so if you use some kind of side accessory handle screwed into the bottom, that would let you add additional mic or lights, but I don't think FV makes any accessories like that of their own. Something like this might help: ruclips.net/video/Lhn1pwZBK9A/видео.html Also, the gimbal is not waterproof unfortunately. I think there are only a couple gimbals which are made specifically for gopros (not phones) that have a waterproof/resistant design, like the Feiyu Tech G6, for example. ruclips.net/video/_bYKEyjJPb0/видео.html Hope that helps!
Unfortunately no :( My friend who lent me his android for an afternoon to test this originally switched to an iPhone and I don't seem to know any other Android users somehow haha. Sorry!
Hey Scott, thanks for the review. Purchased this today over the Smooth because of your positive feedback. Now I'm looking at the app in the app store and the only one I can find has only 25 reviews and sits at 3.2 stars. Given your love for the app I'm wondering if I'm looking at the right one. Is the app you use called FVShare?
Hi! FVShare is the app I used and I have had a very good experience with it so I wouldn't worry about those reviews. If you're on android the story might be a little bit different depending on which phone in particular you have (and if you're on android that would also probably explain the lower rating). It's not perfect, of course, but I have had a very smooth experience with it and far better than other makers' apps.. Hope it works out well for you too!
Hello I am curious about shooting a time lapse video over 2 to 3 hrs. What space on my phone would I need ? and what setting would I need to have to get the video to a watchable length ? I don't want too much of a movie as a finished project.
The space you need would depend on video settings (resolution, mostly) and the final length would depend on how often you take photos to create the time lapse (every 3-4 seconds for moving clouds, every 1-2 seconds for objects moving closer to the camera like people walking ...would make a significant difference in the length of the final video). Basically, you'd calculate how many photos you would take with your chosen interval, then divide it by 24 or 30, depending on the frame rate of your final video. Shooting every 1 second for 1 minute, 60 pictures going into a 30fps final video would create a 2 second video, for example. I'm pretty sure the space required on your phone would depend on the final video, not the amount of time shooting so in most cases it won't be a problem at all since the final video is shorter. Hope that helps!
Scott Dumas thank you it actually ( this time ) to time lapse a tattoo I want to get done. I have it set for 60fps. I think I read that shooting in 4K isn’t necessarily the best setting.
Hi! Thanks so much :) With the original Vilta M you'd have to hold it out sideways for that since the clip doesn't rotate, but the new Vilta M Pro (and possibly the Vilta SE?) will rotate for easier Instagram vertical videos.
I'm a total amateur, but I'd like to get some good video of our travels so I ordered the Vilta M. I'll be using an iPhone XS max and I'm concerned about sound quality in windy areas. Is there a way I could attach a super cheap microphone to this?
I've seen some furry covers for the mics on the bottom of the iPhone. I haven't tried them but I would be interested to see if they work well with this setup actually. There are mics like the VideoMic Me-L but I don't think it will fit physically. I'm sorry I can't really suggest any great setups at the moment :(
Thanks for this review. This really looks like a nice gimbal, especially the point about the Android app. Many of the smartphone gimbal producers seem to heavily focus on iPhones and neglect the Android market. Regarding the 360° pan rotation, I think the Moza Mini-Mi also has that. And Gudsen created a completely new app just for the Mini-Mi, so I have some hope that this will be good. But of course the new app is only available for iPhones at the moment, they are still working on the Android version :( ... At the moment the Mini-Mi is actually at the top of my personal gimbal list as it also comes with wireless phone charging and costs 20% less than the Vilta M or the Smooth 4. But at the moment the availability seems to be an issue. At least on Amazon it is listed as available from end of June / early July. If it gets delayed even further I might switch to the Vilta M.
The Moza is definitely interesting as well, and I'd love to try it out. If you do end up getting it, let me know what you think! :) Thanks for watching!
I fully agree with you regarding neglecting android users, on the ios app Slow Mo and Long Exposure are available but on the android app using a Note 8 its not available at all, spoke to Freevision and thry said they are working on it which is a shame. The app crashes more on my android than my ios company iPhone 6 also I'm having issues with Panorama.
Hi and thanks for the great review of the Gimbal. I wonder if you can changes the speed when you zoom by pressing the button harder. Or this Gimbal only have one zoom speed? I am close to buy this gimbal. Before i was out for the Zhiyun Smooth 4, but i think it is to much button for me to handle so it will be a good movie. And i seem to miss the joystick if i buy that Gimbal. There is another Gimbal thats make my interest in "Snoppa ATOM" Very compact, what you say about this one compare to Vita M ? Keep ut the good work.
Thanks for watching! I honestly can't remember off the top of my head, but there might be an adjustment in the app for zoom speed, however, it's only one consistent speed (not pressure sensitive). That would be really cool to see though! I don't think you'll be disappointed with the Vilta... the smooth 4 is nice in it's own way, but the huge design and tons of buttons were a bit too much for me personally.
Great one mate! Didn't find the link tho, but let's say I have ProShot app on my iPhone 6 which lets me shoot in 24 and 25fps for example (altho not letting me change buffer)... how can I change the fps with this or does it run on the native one that's set in the SysPref's menu? : )
Thanks so much! This has a few options in the menu for different frame rates, 30 and 60fps I think, in a few different resolutions. It might depend on which phone you have though, what your phone is capable of. There's also a built in slow motion mode that will show in higher fps but a lower resolution.
Do you mean like the inception mode type barrel roll? If so, not in POV mode but in pan follow for example, holding it out and using the trigger/joystick you can make it roll a full 360 degrees around the pan axis. In POV mode it just follows all your movements, pan, tilt and roll so the joystick doesn't do anything. I'm not sure if that answers your question or not but if it doesn't let me know.
@@ScottDumas that's pretty good. I rushed out and bought the Smooth 4 shortly after the Smooth Q sold out on clearance sales. Disappointed they removed 360 panning in the 4. No joystick on the Smooth 4, no way to do any kind of roll.
Hi man! Great content! Have you ever had an issue with downloading your videos recorded using "FV Share" app? I am using Iphone and PC and have an issue with that
Hey, thanks so much! Personally I haven't had any issues with an iPhone and a Mac... I have my settings to save the videos automatically to both the app and the phone and then I just send the files over Airdrop or by USB. What kind of issues exactly are you having? Corrupted files?
@@ScottDumas Thanks for the respond! While I'm copying files it suddenly stops on few files with a message "a device attached to the system is not functioning". After that I can not do anything and have to disconnect the phone. I have tried copying those videos through my wife's mac but then I get the message "The operation couldn’t be completed. (com.apple.ImageCaptureCore error -9937.)"
Hmm.. that's a bit strange. I have had a similar issue with transferring videos but not from this app specifically. When I transferred fewer videos at a time (3 or 4) instead of all at once, it fixed the problem. Not sure if that's what's happening for you or not but it might be worth a try. Otherwise I'm not too sure :(
Based on your and other reviews I bought this and like it. My only problem is that it seems to unconnect and need connecting often. Maybe something I'm doing? Any experience with this.
Hey happy to hear you like it, but not that you're having issues. Luckily I haven't had any problems myself keeping it connecting. What phone are you using and have you experienced the same issue with bluetooth connections on other devices? If the gimbal is faulty they should be able to help you out if you email their support team. If you have trouble getting in touch with them and let me know.
Hi Scott, got this gimbal after watching your review. Love a lot about it but no matter how in balance I am in standby mode, as soon as i go into "live" mode the camera tilts to the right. If I use the joystick to adjust the roll axis to level the camera it doesn't stay once you start moving around and it drifts again. ried recalibrating a few times. I'm using iphone xs max so I know its at the weight limit but not over it because I'm not all the way extended when balancing. Have you heard of that with this gimbal? I emailed support but they had a stock response about a counterweight but that doesn't seem to be the issue since I still had some room when balancing.
Hi! Sorry to hear you're having difficulties with it! If you're calibrating it but still having issues that sounds like something wrong. If the phone can be balanced in the grip, it should be okay without counterbalance weights. Weights would affect nothing. Let me get in touch with my contact and pass along your name so they can take a second look at your case. Hopefully they'll get in touch with you but if not just try contacting them once more and being persistent. Hope it gets worked out!
Hi! I'd have to double check to be 100% sure but I think you can adjust the rotation speed but maybe not the zoom. It isn't directly compatible with Filmic Pro so automated things like motion time lapse or panoramas won't work, but of course you can use the gimbal itself still in all the different follow modes together with Filmic Pro. Hope that helps!
Hey thanks so much and great question. I'm not sure if they've set up a way to connect to and start/stop the recording on a gopro or not, I'll ask them and get back to you :)
Scott & DSC85, VILTA-M will unable to control with Gopro Camera directly from the shutter button. Howevere we have a separate model specifically design for Gopro, VILTA-G.
Two questions. I know that gimbals are basically used for video. I’m involved in taking still photos of laysan Albatross in Hawaii. I need the ability to shoot photos without any movement to get the best clarity but I don’t want to lug around a tripod. Will this gimbal help me with my stills? Lastly, is there any way this gimbal can be used with a Panasonic TZ200?
I think in your situation I'd recommend just a small mini tripod, even pocket sized or something like a Gorillapod, together with a small but sturdy ballhead. The setup would probably be a little cheaper than the gimbal even and more solid, but still compact. For photos that'll probably be your best bet. With something like the TZ200 you'd be better off with that setup as well, since I don't think it would work well with the Vilta or most smartphone gimbals due to the size and weight.
The normal camera app does a good job with stabilization so yeah it helps a lot actually. I have found the phone's native camera app does a better job with stabilization than gimbal apps do, generally speaking.
Thanks for watching :) Unfortunately I'm not sure myself... I have heard some people tried and with a counterbalance it can work to some degree but I haven't been able to try it myself so can't say with confidence. I tried contacting Moment about testing them because tons of people have been asking, but they weren't interested at the moment. (no pun intended)
Scott Dumas thanks. Might go for the moza mini mi in that case as it has the 300g payload which would be able to handle the lenses? I like the inception mode too
Yeah the higher payload does seem like it would handle the lenses better but again I'd have to try to say for sure. The moment lenses seem great but I think they'll push the limits of most gimbals at the moment. The G6 Plus actually has a much higher load of 800g, I haven't tried it yet but it might be a great solution for those set on using the lenses. It's not as simple of a solution as these dedicated smartphone gimbals but definitely an interesting option.
Thanks for all your prompt replies. I received my mini mi today. Your video was a great help but I’m guttered by the lack of pano photo modes. I’m wondering if u know of any other gimbals with pano modes that allow you to delay the photo by 3,5,10 seconds?
Yeah their app is still in the middle of being developed... a couple weeks ago it was a whole lot worse. I'm actually just finishing up my final review of the gimbal despite the missing features like the pano mode and useable motion timelapse, but they have been working on implementing those features one by one. It's really odd they didn't have a fully developed app before releasing the gimbal but at least they are actively working on it. Hope it keeps improving because the gimbal itself is pretty nice. I know of others, such as this Vilta, that have pano modes but not with delays that I know of. The Vilta has a delay option in photo mode but only for a normal photo, not a panorama.
Scott Dumas Thanks Scott. The delay on pano is probably something unlikely to appear but would be really good for taking yourself in a pano photo. I will keep practicing with my mini mi and fingers crossed Gudsen keeps working on it. As u said, there is hope
Scott, I've got a Note 8 and use a wireless mic. I'm looking for a solution to record audio using a gimbal... do you think there is enough room for the jack? It's about 5/8" from the bottom corner.
Hi! Typically it would be tricky, although of course it's hard to say without phyisically seeing it (weight/balance would be the biggest issue to overcome probably depending on how it's set up.) If I were recording audio with a gimbal, I might consider just recording it separately and syncing the audio to the video in post. It would take a little more time of course but shouldn't be overly tricky. I hope that helps a little!
Ah ok, I see what you mean. Being totally honest, if you're holding the gimbal and you're at that close distance to the camera, I've found that most phone's built in microphones will do surprisingly well. I would only really feel a strong need for a proper mic if I was a little bit further away from the phone (because the quality does drop off quickly as you move further away). It all depends on what your setup will look like and how much effort you want to put into it I guess haha. Let me know if you have any more questions! :)
Hi! I haven't tried it myself but I've been told as long as you can get it balanced (with counterweights) it should work even when the weight is fairly heavy. The key point is getting it well balanced. I tried out these from Digital Foto and they seem simple and functional enough if you want to have a look: ruclips.net/video/Ret-nuWOyuI/видео.html
Solid review! One thing that I was wondering, does the Vilta M allow portrait orientation of the phone? I like that feature on the Smooth Q, but it was not apparent if the Vilta will also allow to rotate the phone mount to portrait orientation for things like Instagram live.
Hi! Thanks so much! Yeah I forgot to mention that here, unfortunately the grip doesn't twist into portrait orientation like a lot of the others do, you'd have to just hold the handle out to the side to get portrait orientation and that could get tiring.
To be honest I haven't used them but it will likely depend which iPhone you're using and it's size/how much the lenses offset the balance and if the gimbal has enough adjustment for it. As long as you can get it balanced and you're under or close to the recommended weight limit of whichever gimbal you're using you should be ok.
I haven't used the DJI very much myself so it's hard to say, but I know that it is popular especially since it has some level of compatibility with Filmic Pro, but I love the Vilta and I'd have to say it feels a little more solid and performs really really well.
I do! I think it's a close call, but the Vilta is still my personal favorite because of the compact size and overall feel/quality. I like the app too but that's not to say that the Moza is bad at all. It's got lots of good features but it's just too large to be something I take along with me in most cases. If I bring something that large I just tend to shoot with a normal camera.
I'll usually take the phone off because the extended arm gets in the way of it folding flat and I can rebalance in a few seconds. I'll either throw it in the case or even just into a backpack or the outside pocket of a bag sometimes without the case.
You can but you won't be able to control any of the app from the gimbal handle. You can still change follow modes for example, but as far as I know you can't do much else (with any gimbal that I've used so far).
Honestly with this amount of weight almost anything would probably work fairly well. There's a manfrotto one that is pretty popular but I feel like it's overpriced, and I have a super simple no-name brand one I got off amazon for around $10 at one point but have no idea who made it, works perfectly though. Pergear also makes a very solid one but it's not exactly compact (the legs are almost as long as the handle on this gimbal).
Hi Scott Really nice video. Wanted to buy a gimbal for my self. Really confused between mini mi, DJI & freevision. After watching this video I really liked Vilta m. Please suggest me ? I am cool with no charging part of Vilta. Also does Vilta works with filmic pro? Thanks in advance..✌️
Hey there, thanks so much for watching! DJI is great of course, but I've been more than happy with the Vilta M and still feel like it's the best on the market for me at least, even after testing out close to 5 or 10 different mobile gimbals. (unfortunately never the Osmo) BUT... Freevision is coming out with/came out with a new Vilta, and I'll be testing that soon! If anyone can top the Vilta M, it's got to be Freevision so I'm very curious to see how I feel about it. At the moment, I do not believe the Vilta is integrated with Filmic Pro, but I'm not sure about the new one. I'll have to look into that. And in case you're curious, the new Vilta does also charge wirelessly (this one actually does charge your phone too, I missed that in my review, but you need another, non-included cable). Anyway, hope that helps and I hope to have some content for the new Vilta soon! Thanks again for watching!
@@ScottDumas Thanks Scott for your swift reply. If this one charges too then I guess it is the best gimbal with most stable mobile app. I saw your detailed app video also and it was amazing very informative for first time buyers like me. Now I am again stuck Scott as you said freevision is coming with a new gimbal that supports wireless charging just like mini mi then it will be amazing too see what they bring out in market. Unfortunately I am visiting Thailand next month and really wanted to shoot it with gimbal . And here I am stuck again between choices ones again. Did they already launched a new one? If yes then please share me link as there is nothing on their website apart from Vilta g. I hate waiting for new launches makes me overly excited...🤩 Anyways thanks again Scott keep making videos. Actually freevision should put your videos on their official site..👌
@@ScottDumas Ok I looked out for it and turns out it's Vilta s with wireless charging capacity. Though your favourite feature of phone sensor seems missing in it and also pan has reduced to 320 deg from 360 but other functions gained in terms of degrees. Seems to have infinity function too. Waiting for your review video on it. ✌️
@@hardikshit Yah, the Vilta S is it :) Very curious to get my hands on it. But, the best gear is what you have with you, so if you need it for a trip soon, the Vilta M is still an incredibly solid gimbal. These things are coming out nonstop constantly with new features and functions haha.. waiting for the perfect one might never happen but the Vilta M feels like that solid, classic design to me. Nothing crazy, less bells and whistles, but it just works, and works well. Not sure if that really helps or not haha, but yeah- if you need one sooner I'd say don't stress it and you'll be happy with the M. If it's not a rush, it might be worth it to see how the Vilta S compares. :)
@@ScottDumas You are absolutely right Scott even I think I might be going for Vilta M. The only thing I am going for Vilta is because of your review so shout out to you and keep up the good work. Cheers!!
Hi Scott, if I want to add an external mic (don’t have one yet), can I do it with this gimbal? Or do I need to add a rig first? Actually, what is the best set up you can suggest?
Hi! Some sort of l-bracket shaped handle that screws on the bottom and has a place to mount a mic or something on the grip of that handle might be your best bet for using something that plugs into the phone. Actually, I just saw something yesterday about a new "wireless" mic that Sennheiser released (or is releasing soon) that doesn't need to have anything at all plugged into your phone. It will basically record the audio into the mic itself (it's around the size of a match book) and can therefore be any distance at all from the phone. Then, when you stop recording just bring the mic close to the phone and you can sync up the recorded audio to the video with just a simple wireless process. You can even customize the mix of mic-recorded audio to phone-recorded audio if you want to retain some of the ambience in your recording. Seems interesting and might possibly be a good solution for this situation.
That's correct... I missed that at the time of the review but have mentioned it in comments since then.. I should probably at least add a note in the video description as well. Thanks! :)
Scott, thank you for sharing the information on the Vilta M gimbal. That said, will this gimbal hold a Go Pro Hero 7 and if so is there any adapters that need to be purchased. Blue skies, Jg
Hey, thanks for watching :) The Hero 7 should be no problem as far as I know, but you would need to get a gopro adapter plate which you can buy separately (any made for this type of gimbal should be okay as far as I know).
I think they said it was carried over from the design of another model or something along those lines, but in the case of the vilta-m it doesn't do anything
Thanks so much for watching! :) You can, but you don't get the start/stop record function of the button on the handle or zoom ability as you do in the FV Share app.
hey you should check this video, vilta m is working better in compatible with android comparing with dji or zhiyun. At the last part of the vid. ruclips.net/video/0BAY5WW5JgM/видео.html
Yoroshiku! Thanks for your review Scott (awesome name btw!). I’ve seen a few other reviews that people were complaining about the audio quality using the app. What’s your thoughts on this?
Thanks for watching Scott! ;) I actually haven't paid attention to the audio to be completely honest with you, but I never imagined it would be affected. It's something I'll definitely have to look into!
I haven't really had in depth experience with the Osmo 2, but I find no reason at all that it would be significantly better than the Vilta M (for me) and I'm extremely satisfied with the Vilta. However, I don't believe it can do hyperlapse at the moment- I'll mention it to Freevision though and hopefully they can develop that feature for the app soon! :)
Others have also mentioned wanting the hyperlapse feature so I did mention it to them. I'll see what I can do to push that it gets developed and added to the app :)
Hey just though of it today haha, but for hyperlapse you could just use the timelapse feature (which this does have) ...the only difference would be you're walking/moving with the gimbal during the timelapse. :)
Scott Dumas ahh ok. I guess you're right. I mean it is just a moving time lapse isn't it. Yh I'll try it when I finally get it. I've ordered it but not received it yet. Hopefully will soon. Thanks mate. Btw where are you from?
great review i just bought one brand new yesterday based in part on your review. I charged it last night but so far today i have not been able to fully test it out because i have not been able to connect it to my phone via bluetooth. I could tell the box was opened and I am pretty sure that it was a return so the first person that used it did not reset the device or at the very least delete the bluetooth connection. I was hoping you could tell me how to factory reset the device. Their is no information in the manual and none on their website. I have also done a google search and emailed vilta customer service but have not gotten any response. If anybody else knows how to reset this gimbal please post the info. Thanks great review i do hope i get to fully test it out.
Hey, thanks so much for watching! I hope you're able to work it out- I actually happened to talk to someone from Freevision today and mentioned your case to them, so they'll be sure to look into it and should get back to you soon... hopefully. Hope it gets sorted out!
Hi! If everything is balanced well you shouldn't have any significant motor noise. It can occasionally happen if you move too quickly and the motors need to kick into high gear to keep up (with any gimbal, not only this). Otherwise if your balance is ok, and your angle of holding it is not extreme or awkward there should be no noise and I'd contact Freevision to ask about it (ideally with a sample video).
This is a great review. Very thorough and perfectly presented. I found this very useful. Thanks, Scott!
Hi! Do you know what app can use for VILTA - SE? Original app is not working anymore
We are glad you find your favorite phone gimbal, Scott. And thank you for sharing your points of view about VILTA M to us.
It's my pleasure! :-D
I love my freevision vilta M.i am using it for 2 years and as good as new.hav no issues.battery life was awesome..
hi Scott, I was in the market for a gimbal when I found your vid here & I got the Vilta M.
It helped my finding the right gimbal for my needs.... It's amazing !!!!
Thanks so much :) Glad it could help
I can’t seem to find the app… lmao i got the gimbal from a friend and have no knowledge on it till this video, but can’t find the app. Ive looked up fv gimbal, VILTA-M gimbal, etc and its not on the app store for me😭
This is such a great review, thank you for posting this, really helped me make a purchase decision.
A great perfectly paced informative review. Sold on this gimbal from this review, so much so I have just placed my order from Amazon for delivery tomorrow....I can't wait to test drive it. Thanks for your efforts Scott.
Awesome! Glad to hear you enjoyed it and I think you'll enjoy the gimbal just as much! :-D Thanks for watching!!
Great review! I just bought one of these myself. Glad to see others think it’s great too!
Thanks so much! Awesome to see that you're enjoying it as well :)
I have bought Vilta-M in recent days. It's pretty good so far
Glad you're enjoying it! :)
After using a handful of these like you have, it really is hard to ignore the solid quality of this one isn't it :) Glad you like it too!
Yes sir ! just found out about this gimbal and checked your channel, great review. Im waiting for the next video of the gimbal i.e time laps and different features it can do.
So should i go for it or choose any ither liki diji or smooth 4
Is it better than the smovepro?
Up until I viewed this video this morning I was getting the DJI or the Smooth Q but just now I bought the Freeview. Thanks for the great review Scott.
Thanks so much for watching and I'm glad to hear your choice! I think you'll really enjoy it :-D
thank you for this man.. I've just bought that one just yesterday and waiting for it now..
Hope you love it! :) Thanks for watching!
Hi Scott, i got my vilta M today, what mode can i roll axis, only at pov mode? They call it like helioscope i guess or inception @7:08
I think to enter pov mode you can also press the power button 3 times. Ordered mine yesterday, waiting for it to arrive. Thanks for the review
I missed that, I'll have to check it out :) would be very useful! Hope you enjoy and thanks for watching! :)
You can charge your phone using the Gimbal charging port. It said so in the manual. You have to purchase the adapter that’s not included
I'd like to think the people behind the Vilta-M are in fact videographers themselves and maybe that's why they've added this obvious feature that was missing from all the others I've seen...perhaps they'll add the timer to it too with the next update! .
Making instructive reviews is no mean feet! I've done it myself! Hat's off!
Just ordered one of these. Thanks for the in depth review. Can’t wait to try mine!
Awesome, hope you love it! Thanks for watching :)
Thanks! Do you know if you can switch it vertical?
By the way, you can use the gimbal to charge your phone! For an iPhone, you simply need an OTG cable. It even mentions this in the instruction manual
Haha yeah, I noticed after and wish I could re-edit the video. That, or have a dollar for every time someone pointed out my miss ;) Thanks for watching and commenting! :)
Scott Dumas ahhh, sorry! Love videos! I’ve watched your Vilta videos soooo many times!!
Start 2:34
I am sold on it. (One question: Since the word 'Button' has two "t's" in it, why do you never pronounce AT LEAST one of them?)
Haha, because I'm from Boston where t's and r's don't exist ;) Hope you love the gimbal!
Hey Scott... the app for this gimbal is not available in the App Store.. is there an alternative gimbal app you can recommend? Thank you..
Scott Dumas cool. And thanks for sharing even more user info.
Thnx for the review. But can you tell me which is the best among:
Moza mini s
Smooth 4
Vimble 2
And this?
For me, I prefer this one. I don't need a whole lot of extra features and the motion/reaction of this one is the most natural. Moza does well too in that regard, but the Freevision feels a bit more well made. The Smooth 4 is large and has more functions built into it, if that's what you are looking for. Vimble 2 is not bad but it's my least favorite of the bunch. Simple, just OK quality, and the motors feel a little weak compared to the others (although it can still do the job)
@@ScottDumas thank you very much. The response is really appreciated 😊🙌💕✨
Got it today. Brilliant bit of kit but would love a 24fps option in the app but can easily be overcome with a bypass. Great review ✊🏻
Most back cameras give better picture and video quality..
hi! Thank you so much :) Yes, you can switch the front and back cameras in the app :) I have another video going over the app in detail if you'd like to check it out :)

I use moment lenses. Can counter weight be added to the Gimbal.
Hey thanks for watching and thanks for the information! That's good to know :)
Hey scott, have you ever strapped/taped a small weight to the phone to help the stabilisation dynamics? up to the motor weight limits of course!
I haven't actually but that's definitely an interesting idea! :)
Very nice review Scott. One thing though, you actually *can* charge your phone with this gimbal, you just need an OTG cable. 😀
Excellent review. Thanks ! Getting this gimbal for my android phone.
Thanks so much! Hope you enjoy it :)
Hi Scott, appreciate the effort for this video but does it able to switch front/rear camera while recording?
@@vioren22 I'll do my best to check when I can but I'm on a little vacation at the moment, so I'll try to remember :)
Scott Dumas enjoy your vacation! I’m just sharing my thought while deciding the gimbal that I want. Cheers~
Hi! So I was able to check it out and it does seem that once you start recording the ability to switch front and rear cameras disappears unfortunately.
Thank you for your answer but have you reviewed that one that youve suggested please
I did! It's here: ruclips.net/video/FRlzqQkAvi0/видео.html

Something like this might help: ruclips.net/video/Lhn1pwZBK9A/видео.html
Also, the gimbal is not waterproof unfortunately. I think there are only a couple gimbals which are made specifically for gopros (not phones) that have a waterproof/resistant design, like the Feiyu Tech G6, for example.

Hope that helps!
Got the Vilta M and just learning everything. To do a hyperlapse is the setting like a timelapse but I walk with the camera ?
That's right! I hope you enjoy the vilta :)
You mention an updated video in depth on the android app. Did you everr make that? thanks,t
Scott Dumas I'm on iPhone X so will give it a fair shot. Thanks for the quick response. 👍🏽
Hey Scott, cool video! Is it possible to shoot vertical videos with the Gimbal for Instagram videos?
I'm sorry I can't really suggest any great setups at the moment :(
hi scott! good day to you. Can it possibleto charging while shooting with the cable on it?
Great video! Can you tell me if there's a way to quickly switch from landscape to portrait when taking videos?
Holding the grip out to the side at 90 degrees should switch it into portrait mode automatically :)
Scott Dumas thanks for replying and for the info!
There is another Gimbal thats make my interest in "Snoppa ATOM" Very compact, what you say about this one compare to Vita M
In POV mode can you do a full 360 degree barrel roll when holding it out vertically (roll around the pan axis)?
Otherwise I'm not too sure :(
So please help me find the ios app for it? I can't find the native app.
Hey so I heard back from Freevision and they recommended adjusting in the APP: Advance setting - Gimbal - Roll axis adjustment
Hope that helps! :)
Hi from Holland, can you adjust the 360 rotation and the zoom speed? Does it work well with Filmic Pro Android?
Awesome review. Can you confirm if the shutter button will trigger a gopro to record or not?
Hey thanks so much and great question. I'm not sure if they've set up a way to connect to and start/stop the recording on a gopro or not, I'll ask them and get back to you :)
Scott & DSC85, VILTA-M will unable to control with Gopro Camera directly from the shutter button. Howevere we have a separate model specifically design for Gopro, VILTA-G.
Thanks guys!!!
Thanks Freevision for getting back to this, it totally slipped my mind to update it! Sorry!
Can i use my note 9 pro max on this gimble???
From Bangladesh❣️
With something like the TZ200 you'd be better off with that setup as well, since I don't think it would work well with the Vilta or most smartphone gimbals due to the size and weight.
do you have tested it in the normal camera app? I heard that the micro vibration isn’t that much
The normal camera app does a good job with stabilization so yeah it helps a lot actually. I have found the phone's native camera app does a better job with stabilization than gimbal apps do, generally speaking.
Thanks dude, really awesome video, just upgraded from a galaxy s6 to s9+, not its time for a gimbal.
Thanks for watching! :)
Thanks for the info. Do you know if the Vilta M could hold an iPhone X with lenses such as moment lenses attached??
Scott Dumas
Thanks Scott. The delay on pano is probably something unlikely to appear but would be really good for taking yourself in a pano photo.
I will keep practicing with my mini mi and fingers crossed Gudsen keeps working on it. As u said, there is hope
Scott Dumas
If u get a chance to use active track or intelli trace in a hyper lapse that might be really helpful to anyone considering Osmo.
It would be pretty fun, and something unique to have pano self portraits! Hope Gudsen sees this haha
I'll definitely do what I can :)
Can you shoot vertical?
Scott, I've got a Note 8 and use a wireless mic. I'm looking for a solution to record audio using a gimbal... do you think there is enough room for the jack? It's about 5/8" from the bottom corner.
Hi! Typically it would be tricky, although of course it's hard to say without phyisically seeing it (weight/balance would be the biggest issue to overcome probably depending on how it's set up.)
If I were recording audio with a gimbal, I might consider just recording it separately and syncing the audio to the video in post. It would take a little more time of course but shouldn't be overly tricky.
I hope that helps a little!
@@ScottDumas thanks that does help. I am trying to go live in FB or other with a gimbal and wireless...
Will this gimbal work with moment lenses? I'm assuming it would need a counter weight. Is there a counter weight available? thanks...
Nice review. Thank you for it. Does it have manual focus control? If yes have you played with it?
Thanks for watching! There is a way to zoom but I don't think there's any in depth focus control as far as I can remember.
Definitely the gimbal I’m getting
Glad to hear it! :) I definitely think you'll enjoy it
Also I’m getting some olloclip lenses to use on my iPhone will this gimbals still be able to balance it okay?
To be honest I haven't used them but it will likely depend which iPhone you're using and it's size/how much the lenses offset the balance and if the gimbal has enough adjustment for it. As long as you can get it balanced and you're under or close to the recommended weight limit of whichever gimbal you're using you should be ok.
Hi scott, which one should i get im confused between dji om2 and vilta M , im currently using iphone7+ and s9+
I haven't used the DJI very much myself so it's hard to say, but I know that it is popular especially since it has some level of compatibility with Filmic Pro, but I love the Vilta and I'd have to say it feels a little more solid and performs really really well.
VILTA-M was designed to compete with original OM not OM2. OM2 is made with plastic without 360 degree turning.
Where can I download the Free Vision app ? I'd like to try it on my OSMO 2. Thanks
The Freevision app is called FV Share and should be on any app store :)
Do you still like the Volta above the moss mini ? These are the 2 I am most interested in for traveling.
How do you pack it when you aren’t filming ? Leave the phone on and put it in a case ?
I'll usually take the phone off because the extended arm gets in the way of it folding flat and I can rebalance in a few seconds. I'll either throw it in the case or even just into a backpack or the outside pocket of a bag sometimes without the case.
Ok thank you
Don’t want the reset up time too long.
I appreciate the help. I think this is the one.
I like user friendly stuff !
Awesome thanks and merry Christmas !
Great video. Can you provide the link to the app that you mention, or what's the name of the app?
Hi! FV Share is the app that Freevision puts out to work with this :)
Thanks Scott.
Can you use third party App like Filmic Pro or Pro shot with that?
You can but you won't be able to control any of the app from the gimbal handle. You can still change follow modes for example, but as far as I know you can't do much else (with any gimbal that I've used so far).
Can you recommend a small, sturdy tripod for this 1/4 screw mount?
Honestly with this amount of weight almost anything would probably work fairly well. There's a manfrotto one that is pretty popular but I feel like it's overpriced, and I have a super simple no-name brand one I got off amazon for around $10 at one point but have no idea who made it, works perfectly though. Pergear also makes a very solid one but it's not exactly compact (the legs are almost as long as the handle on this gimbal).
Thanks for the reply Scott! I appreciate it.
Hi Scott
Really nice video.
(unfortunately never the Osmo)
BUT...
@@ScottDumas
Thanks Scott for your swift reply.
I hate waiting for new launches makes me overly excited...🤩
Anyways thanks again Scott keep making videos. Actually freevision should put your videos on their official site..👌
@@ScottDumas
Ok I looked out for it and turns out it's Vilta s with wireless charging capacity.
@@ScottDumas
You are absolutely right Scott even I think I might be going for Vilta M.
Scott Dumas Thanks Scott! Need to do some research on it...
the best smartphone gimbal
Nope
You can charge your phone from the usb port but require an otg adapter. See the manual for details.
Hey, thanks for watching :) The Hero 7 should be no problem as far as I know, but you would need to get a gopro adapter plate which you can buy separately (any made for this type of gimbal should be okay as far as I know).
comparing Vilta M with Osmo 2: does the hyper lapse allow you to active track as well?
Hi! The hyperlapse (timelapse) does allow you to track :)
what is the red/green switch on the front above the mode-trigger button used for?
I think they said it was carried over from the design of another model or something along those lines, but in the case of the vilta-m it doesn't do anything
You wanted to tell us an app, that works wonderfully with the gimbal. Which one?
The link is in the description for a video about the app: ruclips.net/video/QQ5gpk90JjY/видео.html
It's called FV Share :)
Really great in-depth review .can you still use the phone own camera app?
Thanks so much for watching! :) You can, but you don't get the start/stop record function of the button on the handle or zoom ability as you do in the FV Share app.
Does the so use the optical zoom of the iPhone? Our is it just digital zoom?
I'm fairly certain it's digital zoom but I'll double check :)
Hi, what programe You using to callout subtitles?? Well done video!
Thanks so much! I edit in FCPX and the callouts are an effect I got from Videohive :)
Great review and the kids are adorable.
Thanks so much! :-D
could u please test the android app in depth? it has bad ratings in Play store and i wonder whether it has improved..
I will try! I'm not sure if I'll get a chance and I'm really generally not accustomed to Androids so I might not be the best for it though.
hey you should check this video, vilta m is working better in compatible with android comparing with dji or zhiyun. At the last part of the vid.
ruclips.net/video/0BAY5WW5JgM/видео.html
Hi ! Can you confirm that we don't need to use the FV app to be able to use all the physical settings (dead band, speed, and Inception mode) ? Thx !
you do need to use FV Share to control the speed, deadline. Inception mode operates independently.
Awesome, thank you!
If you had to choose between the Osmo 2 and Vilta M which would you suggest for mostly cinematic film making? Also can Vilta M do hyperlapse?
I haven't really had in depth experience with the Osmo 2, but I find no reason at all that it would be significantly better than the Vilta M (for me) and I'm extremely satisfied with the Vilta. However, I don't believe it can do hyperlapse at the moment- I'll mention it to Freevision though and hopefully they can develop that feature for the app soon! :)
Scott Dumas cool thank you. Tbh I've already ordered it coz it was cheap. But I really would like the hyperlapse. One of the things I wanted
Hi, Scott - experienced a motor noise while recording, any idea how to fix it.
Thank you so much for the info
