I wish I’d seen this review two weeks ago. I ordered the Osmo. I’m still learning with it but something you should mention is that the Osmo will not hold an iPhone unless it does NOT have a cover. I have an extremely thin cover but had to remove it to have the Osmo hold the phone. It hasn’t let go of my phone yet, but I’m disappointed in that mount. I worry about the $800 phone constantly.
The Osmo Mobile 2 hold my iPhone XR with a very thick case just fine ^^ and this thing is a beast really I love it so much I'm glad I didn't buy the smooth 4
I have the smooth 4 and love it. I use it with my galaxy s9 and app runs perfectly. Love the trigger on the smooth 4. Highly recommend it as it is in my view better than the osmo. I have DJI drones and they are awesome, but as a gimbal the smooth 4 is the winner in my opinion. Use use FIlmic Pro most of the time.
Had an Osmo 2 for a week and sold it.Had a cheap and nasty feel. The zoom is smoother on the smooth 4. If i was going for an Osmo, I would go the original. Love my Smooth 4, and updates to the android app have fixed any issues

Ben Pyman I have a Samsung S7 edge. The smooth 4 refused to connect, even after updates. In my case it was absolute trash and I had to throw it away ! BTW I deploy 30 cams when filming, & have the Crane 2 as well as the original DJI Osmo mobile.....so I am not ignorant of different cam operating systems. Maybe the smooth 4 I was sent was defective....but it refused to charge completely, and after one day wouldn't turn on......needless to say I was not amused.
My Zhiyun Smooth Q was brilliant in use but only lasted through 6 or 7 sessions before one of the motors went nuts. I sent it back, but it seems to have been lost in the post so, as I've also lost the docket from the post office, I've done my dough. Looking at the DJI OSMO 2 next and hoping it's a little more durable.
I am thinking about buying a Smooth 4, but was wondering whether there has been any improvement in the past year regarding the face tracking .. surely this is a very important feature in any gimbal

No way to close the popup and open the application. I updated the gimbal firmware and re-installed the app like their support said to no effect. Waiting on their return label.
i have both gimble, Zhiyun smooth 4 is winner without any doubt, zhiyun have 1 inbuilt cam software for video, but osmo need third party video app , zhiyun videos are more cinematic , osmo sometimes shakes while using , osmo tracking is more accurate than zhiyun tracking but this function i really dont use so for that reason , actually both gimble are best in own field but if i will chose then it will be smooth 4
Just got a SMooth 4 today and I'm really impressed so far. Purchased it over the Osmo because of this review. Looks like they have fixed up the facial recognition and following in the app - its working really well. Thanks for the review mate! Also, the focus pull is working really well - a lot smoother than I expected. I think I can dump most of my big gear for social media jobs now!
Smooth Q - 360 degree pan and can roll. Or the FreeVision Vilta M - also 360 degree pan and a wider roll range. Smooth 4, and DJI cannot pan 360 degrees, Smooth 4 has no roll control.
I used the Smooth 4 for the latest car review. Only issue was that the gimbal kept shutting down, dropping the phone from landscape to portrait. It happened randomly. Also; using the app eat the battery in minutes (fully charged iPhone SE). But when it was working it was great for panning and low-to-the-ground filming of a stationary object.
This is a very sober, professional video without bells or whistles! A very qualitative review, Justin. One that thoroughly informed me. I've gladly subscribed. Unfortunately (?) I bought the DJI Osmo Mobile 2 before finding this video. Hopefully I won't find the controls as lacking they seemed.

I did so much research on this.... I had the osmo Mobile 1 and it broke twice (overheating motors) after iphonedos review on the smooth 4 that kept me away from it... so I did something random and got the SMOVE... and that thing is actually pretty awesome

Great video but I am stuck on this dilemma on which one to choose. As on date August 2018, have you seen any major update for the iOS devices? I use an iPhone 8 Plus.. I am leaning towards Osmo 2 but I like the trigger and additional controls on the Smooth 4 but am not sure about the App.
Great question! The two were similar but we did notice the when we had the osmo 2 and an iphone connected that was the fastest battery drain as a combination. Not too much of a difference but it was noticeable.
Zihyun haven’t been able to get face tracking right during production life of their Smooth Q, so I wouldn’t hold my breath. As you stated, that single feature is the most significant distinguishing factor between the two gimbals. Thanks for a great review.
I got the Smooth 4 over the Osmo 2 days ago. I should say the only achiles’ heel it has is the lack of joystick. Overall? I had complete control over what I want the gimbal to do. But then again it goes down to preferences🙂

They do seem to release updates to the app quite frequently which is good! I haven't really put this up against any of the newer stabilizers, it's still my go-to though
The very best gimbal is the Free Fly Movi. I have it and I love it. I can use my Moment lenses with my Samsung note 9 and with counterweights it works perfectly. I've tried all the others and only the Free Fly Movi can handle the weight of the Sam note 9 and Moment lenses.
Thank you for your review! I would like to have seen your test results while running, and with the units attached to a bicycle for trail and mountain-bike racing. How do they standup? The Osmo 1 had a bracket that could be attached to a cycle, using a socket in the side of the unit I was looking at buying - is it still possible with the Osmo 2? How stable are both products in panoramic mode, with a wire dangling out the side, to hookup an external microphone like the Rode (with the Rode mounted separately on a bar using the tripod socket)? I use an iPhone 7 plus for shooting video - using an external mic really makes a big dif for clarity and in windy conditions. With both units, does the position of the camera make a difference to the stabilizer operation? By that I mean, if I have the cam lens to the right where the stabilizer arm is, so I can attach the wires for an external mic on the left side, will it still function fine in this mode? You briefly mentioned the wire hindrance in portrait orientation vs pano mode at 5:38 in, I would like to know if the cam position in the holder makes a difference. And as the owner of the Osmo 2, with its sealed in place battery, do you like the Osmo 2 better than the Osmo 1, with its removable batteries (which can be changed on an extended shoot)? What was the charging time, from empty to full charge? Did you test? I appreciated you brief discussion re the differences between the Osmo 1 and 2. It almost sounds like the Osmo 1 is still the better of the two units despite the larger battery in Osmo 2! FYI - I have Filmic Pro for my iPhone 7 Plus, and just downloaded the latest update. It supports both versions of the DJI Osmo, but not any of the Zhiyun products, at least not from the notes on the App store website. Company wise, I suspect DJI is a far larger company with more products under its belt, such as drones, plus accessories, than Zhiyun. Thanks again for this review, as I make a decision which one to buy for my first stabilizer! I've been subscribed for a while, following your videos and valued tips. Much appreciated! Just a heads up. I have the Freevision Vilta M Pro and you can no longer use the app or update it via the App Store on IOS. Justin if you can find a way to update the software in iOS or how to fix that it would be amazing! Otherwise I have a $150 paperweight

I recently purchased the new Mini Mi3 due to all of the bad reviews about the Osmo's so badly working with android devices. After watching your video it appears that the Mini mi 3 is much the same as the Asmo with the exception of price and the Mini Mi will also charge your phone while it is attached to the gimble wirelessly. Hi Justin, I hope you can & will answer my questions, I have two of them. A quick explanation, I'm a content creator for youtube, not yet upto monetising but hopefully soon. I am looking at buying my first gimbal and I know you have an Samsung Galaxy S9 plus as do I. My phone is in a heavy duty aluminium case and I really hope I don't have to remove it. Hence my questions are: 1)what is the maximum weight that the zhiyun can cope with (I already know that the DJI isn't suitable as the phone + case combined weight is over 500 grams)? 2) can the jaws of the zhiyun cope with opening to 100mm (width of case is over 900mm). A third and final question comes to mind, is there any gimbal in the budget end of the field that can satisfy this criteria?

Was about to get a Zhiyun Smooth Q but the local supplier told me Smooth 4 is the latest version. I went home searching for any youtube review and found this one :) Getting the Smooth 4 soon! I also have bought the Techo lens for smartphone from the other video based on your recommendation. But I think i got the rip off version. :( It worked but couldve been better if ive gotten the original one.

Hi Justin, Great video! I'm considering getting a gimbal, and almost considered the Zhiyun. The problem is the Zhiyun app is buggy and I don't trust them on resolving it anytime soon like they claim (based on reviews of the Smooth Q that also had issues). Makes it tough to choose - I do like the idea of face tracking, but might benefit from the controls on the Zhiyun more. That said, if I've never used a gimbal before, maybe the Osmo 2 will be good enough. Decisions.......
The new version of the Zhiyun app is a lot better but honestly I don't use the built in app for either stabilizer. I use the gimbal to do the stabilization and use either filmic pro or the build in camera apps to do the recording. If you want face tracking and all the other bells and whistles then yes, the app will play a big role there 😀
Smooth 4 SUCKS! It is jittery and NOT smooth at all specially when running! The app also is not friendly! You recommend this garbage because you got it for free and sucking up with the chinese manufacturer! DJI IS MUCH BETTER!

Any information about the fact the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9 plus won't work with third party camera apps? E.G. Filmic pro? I bought the app and it simply won't work. Mia Anstine It won't hold my iPhone X with a cover on but it did hold my iPhone 7 plus because the X is a little thicker :(
the osmo hold my iphone 8 with a case just fine. I really like the app and the time-lapse features especially.

How's the object tracking with the 2019-05 updates? Any improvement? I would like to know more not just the hardware but the software.

As of 2019 the Zhiyun doesn't work well on Android. In fact, it never has. I don't know what you're talking about.

DJI OSMO 2 for me. Making a hyper lapse is much beter because of the tracking compared with the Smooth 4

The very best gimbal is the Free Fly Movi. I have it and I love it. I can use my Moment lenses with my Samsung note 9 and with counterweights it works perfectly.
I've tried all the others and only the Free Fly Movi can handle the weight of the Sam note 9 and Moment lenses.

Thank you for your review! I would like to have seen your test results while running, and with the units attached to a bicycle for trail and mountain-bike racing. How do they standup?
The Osmo 1 had a bracket that could be attached to a cycle, using a socket in the side of the unit I was looking at buying - is it still possible with the Osmo 2?
How stable are both products in panoramic mode, with a wire dangling out the side, to hookup an external microphone like the Rode (with the Rode mounted separately on a bar using the tripod socket)? I use an iPhone 7 plus for shooting video - using an external mic really makes a big dif for clarity and in windy conditions.
With both units, does the position of the camera make a difference to the stabilizer operation? By that I mean, if I have the cam lens to the right where the stabilizer arm is, so I can attach the wires for an external mic on the left side, will it still function fine in this mode? You briefly mentioned the wire hindrance in portrait orientation vs pano mode at 5:38 in, I would like to know if the cam position in the holder makes a difference.
And as the owner of the Osmo 2, with its sealed in place battery, do you like the Osmo 2 better than the Osmo 1, with its removable batteries (which can be changed on an extended shoot)? What was the charging time, from empty to full charge? Did you test?
I appreciated you brief discussion re the differences between the Osmo 1 and 2. It almost sounds like the Osmo 1 is still the better of the two units despite the larger battery in Osmo 2!
FYI - I have Filmic Pro for my iPhone 7 Plus, and just downloaded the latest update. It supports both versions of the DJI Osmo, but not any of the Zhiyun products, at least not from the notes on the App store website. Company wise, I suspect DJI is a far larger company with more products under its belt, such as drones, plus accessories, than Zhiyun.

Just a heads up. I have the Freevision Vilta M Pro and you can no longer use the app or update it via the App Store on IOS. Justin if you can find a way to update the software in iOS or how to fix that it would be amazing! Otherwise I have a $150 paperweight

I recently purchased the new Mini Mi3 due to all of the bad reviews about the Osmo's so badly working with android devices. After watching your video it appears that the Mini mi 3 is much the same as the Asmo with the exception of price and the Mini Mi will also charge your phone while it is attached to the gimble wirelessly. Currently I am using a Pixel II XL software that is on the phone along with the Moda Genie app?

Hi Justin, I hope you can & will answer my questions, I have two of them. A quick explanation, I'm a content creator for youtube, not yet upto monetising but hopefully soon. I am looking at buying my first gimbal and I know you have an Samsung Galaxy S9 plus as do I. My phone is in a heavy duty aluminium case and I really hope I don't have to remove it. Hence my questions are:
1)what is the maximum weight that the zhiyun can cope with (I already know that the DJI isn't suitable as the phone + case combined weight is over 500 grams)?
2) can the jaws of the zhiyun cope with opening to 100mm (width of case is over 900mm).
A third and final question comes to mind, is there any gimbal in the budget end of the field that can satisfy this criteria?

Ugh! Just received my Osmo Mobile 2 after reading an earlier video recommendation from you, and feeling a bit disappointed, as it seems I maybe shouldn’t have. However, I’m going to keep it and hope for the best! To be honest, I don’t know the first thing about using either one. Do you have a video about actually setting one up for use? I’m just trying to set up a little place in my house for vlogging. I didn’t grow up with this technology. I’m 77.

I just got the Shure MV88 iOS Digital Stereo Condenser Microphone and might have to return it if I’m going to get the Zhiyun smooth 4. What do you microphone do you think will pair with the smooth 4 perfectly?
I attached a mounting bracket to the bottom of the unit so i could put a rode video micro microphone on, or a rode filmmaker kit wireless mic. There's a photo in my instagram feed showing what it looks like

Great review! I have been sooting rugby matches with my DSLR and mounting my iPhone to the hotshot mount. I've had decent success but would like to improve my results with image stabilization. These products look promising. My biggest concern would be weight. Any suggestions, feedback etc.?

Great video! I'm considering getting a gimbal, and almost considered the Zhiyun. The problem is the Zhiyun app is buggy and I don't trust them on resolving it anytime soon like they claim (based on reviews of the Smooth Q that also had issues).
Makes it tough to choose - I do like the idea of face tracking, but might benefit from the controls on the Zhiyun more. That said, if I've never used a gimbal before, maybe the Osmo 2 will be good enough.

The new version of the Zhiyun app is a lot better but honestly I don't use the built in app for either stabilizer. I use the gimbal to do the stabilization and use either filmic pro or the build in camera apps to do the recording. If you want face tracking and all the other bells and whistles then yes, the app will play a big role there 😀
Smooth 4 SUCKS! It is jittery and NOT smooth at all specially when running! The app also is not friendly! You recommend this garbage because you got it for free and sucking up with the chinese manufacturer! DJI IS MUCH BETTER!
How do you think the smooth 4 compares to the Osmo 2 as far as time-lapse functions go?

Any information about the fact the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9 plus won't work with third party camera apps? E.G. Filmic pro? I bought the app and it simply won't work. I've read it's the snapdragon cpu that causes the issue. Do you know if this will be remedied in the future? Great vid btw, I bought the smooth 4. Zihyun's app doesn't work with the S9 either, just letting you all know.
Hi Justin. Excellent video, though I’m still trying to decide whether I should purchase the dji or smooth 4. Now that the zhiyun is compatible with filmic pro, do you find it to be a dji killer? I’m very interested in the follow mode, but you and another reviewer seem to like the lock and switch features on the zhiyun. You’re opinion.
