Do BMW wheel lug bolts annoy you too?!
Yes. I just went to buy them and $160 is just outrageous. I'll hold the wheel for that cost.
No
Theres a tool from Lisle called pilot pins part # 13950, use them daily. Would be ok for summer tires but prob not so good for winters considering the corrosion. Could end up torquing the studs back every time the nut is removed. If the nut and stud don't become rust welded together
I thought it was just my BMW
Yup. First mod I did on my Porsche Cayman. Especially good for tracking the car too because of the track well-set. I run the Tarrett Engineering studs, and I’ve been happy with them, but I do like the hex wrench fastener on yours-looks much easier to install.
Also, if you track the car (and therefore change the pads a lot) put in caliper studs too 👍🏻
Just found this channel, love how you go over not only the process but the tools with links too. Great stuff for a new e90 owner who wants to try some of this work on his own!
Loved the way you described everything about the mods, parts and tools in the description. Keep it up brother.
Glad to help! Thank you for watching.
One of the most helpful videos on yt. I was looking on how to make my car looking wider for cheap and make the wheels come on and off easily. Thank you for the video
Awesome, thank you! Glad I could help.
I've never seen any videos of you on a road course or autocross but these are definitely a must. Certainly in my playbook
I'll try to get some for you this upcoming summer!
Dude I love you for making a video about this. I’m currently deployed overseas right now and i have a list of things to do on my E90 and when I get back this will be now my first thing to do lol.
Heck yeah! Thanks for your service 🤘
Ditto on TY for your service! I’m former 8 yrs active duty US Navy. Love my Military brothers and sisters and so thankful for you all.
I'm putting studs on this weekend can't wait been needing to do them for a while finally getting round to doing them
You're gonna love 'em!
Bro I’m ordering it right know biggest pain in the ass keep up the good work on videos 👍🏼 best Bmw channel on RUclips hands down quality vs quantity lol
Thank you sir! It's comments like these that keep me going 🙏
Excellent video production and content. Keep it coming and feel better soon. My family has an '08 E90 328, '08 E60 535, and '10 E60 535 so DIY is key for us.
Awesome! Thanks for watching. Sounds like you have a nice collection over there...
I cannot tell you how grateful I am for this video I have an M3 if I was able to post a picture I will show you but you were 100% accurate the stock Lugnuts are ridiculous soon as I have enough money to get this I’m going to order this kit so I don’t have to house and with this nonsense anymore I have white off three-piece staggered rims on my car and the back ones are so heavy because they’re so deep makes it almost impossible to try and get them on and less you’re only a couple inches off the ground so thank you again.
I was looking at studs for days online after breaking my back changing my tires in the garage in the middle of the night with freezing temperatures outside. I waited too long to change them because a tire shop used a torque wrench on my locks and stripped them all. Was trying to get them off without damaging my 19" wheel but ended up having to pay somebody to get them off and wheels got damage in the wells anyway....oh well.
You instantly put me over that edge. I'll be putting them on when i swap back to summers. I'll even use your links ;-)
Oh man, that's no fun. You'll thank yourself after getting a extended stud conversion kit, and I greatly appreciate you using my links!
A little Anti-seize on the hub will help with removing the spacers too. Speaking from a MN driver I anti-seize everything. Nice choice on the tires. Big fan of the General Altimax Arctic.
This is a great tip, especially in the rust belt!
Back saver for sure! Great video and product thanks!
Thanks for watching, Jeff!
Hell yeah I love my maxjax lift too,i got the dannmar mx6 same thing. Waiting for my lug studs to show up from ecs 👍. Cool video I subscribed
Awesome! The MX6 is even nicer. Thanks for watching and subscribing!
I love the stud bolts because you don't have to worry about getting broken studs restuded when they break and they eventually do
That's another good reason!
Awesome stuff. Very helpful BMW content.
Thank you!
I use burger racing spacers on my M3 and they include a single locator stud for initial centering of the wheel which is a cheaper alternative which can be used with standard wheels also.
Great video Jake!
I have looked up SO MANY videos on Google, RUclips and various forums and your description alone about what you've done to your car so far summed up a lot of my inquiries and your video was a sponsored video on a differential flush! How have I never come across this just by searching the things I actually searched for??? I have a 2011 e90 xDrive so this will come in handy. Tho, you have some expensive ass taste on some of your modifications. Please remember a lot of items are re-branded Chinese products and German/Taiwan/Vietnam parts. But you do you!
Glad you found the channel! Yes, I know a lot of parts are re-branded. Something I consider when looking to save some money, but my 135i is more of a $$$$ build.
Stud conversion kit looks easy can you let me kno how they hold up over time, I have a 550 and was thinking about putting spacers on
Jake... good to see another video. Happy new year brotha! Thanks for sharing
Thank you sir! I appreciate your support.
@@jake_spence yes sir!
To prevent the spacers getting into the wheelhub, I would recommend using a bit of copper paste between the spacer and the hub!👍🏻
Great tip!
Joonas Einola You should use the silver stuff,Something about copper cladding steel causing corrosion at an accelerated rate rings a bell to me.Electro-negativity.
Alright bro love the video and ordered conversion kit from ECS. Thanks man!
Awesome! Enjoy! You will love it. Thanks for watching.
Well they sent me 4 studs of the correct size and 16 of the wrong size 🤬 now I have to wait for the RMA to get there before they ship the correct studs #realproblems lol
The general altimax are awesome winters plus their super quiet I have them on my F30. Love them. Also I ordered stud kit and spacers springs around the corner woo hoo
Awesome to hear you enjoy the Altimax Arctics as well. You'll be glad you ordered the stud kit and spacers! Thanks for watching.
Definitely! I just ordered my kit yesterday 🙌🏽
Right on! You'll thank yourself later.
Man I need to do this on my 335 and love the video 🤙
Do it! Thanks for watching.
You can also get "pilot pins" to help with installing the wheels. their like temporary studs that just thread in. just 2 of them is enough to get the wheel on easily. this conversion is also a good idea
Beautiful work. Very interesting conversion. BTW, for tires, my preference is Continental tires, give them a try one day.
Thanks for watching! I like Continental as well... have had some great summer tires from them.
Hey man, thx for the vid. Was wondering about something. The factory setup provides a lock bold to prevent easy theft. Is there an option for this, or how do you handle this? Thx for your reply! Grtz :-)
This is really good mod, only thing I would suggest is to use brake clean on the male/female threads prior to using thread locker, doesn’t seem to work as well with grease and oil
Good tip! Thanks for that.
Mr Stud... haha 😄👍 Great video Jake.
Haha, thanks Ken!
What has happened to the front fender on the 1 series. Looks off as it connects to the wing.
Cool Video!
I wish I'd have know that when we had our 02 745Li on 22s back in 07. I used to swap for the summer and it was a PITA. Live and learn right.
Haha, I can only imagine how heavy those were... was probably a pain to line up. Now you know!
@@jake_spence no doubt! My father inlaw still has the car. It's the red wrapped Bimmer I have post here and there. Really heavy!
Oh wow...this was so informative.. I recently had my brakes done at a big name tyre shop (I live in Australia) and they damaged the drivers side hub trying to get out lug nut they put in previously...
Are those conversion kits on ebay advertised as "for bmws" for around $160-180...suitable for all models...? I have a e82
I can't comment on the eBay kits, but I linked the one I used in the description and it definitely works on the E82, plus it's at that same price point!
Great idea!!!
I need a garage like this dude 👌🏼or a friend with one 😂
I was pessimistic about this. But after watching this video .. it really is a good call. Very good video
Glad to help, thanks for watching!
I like what you do and how knowledgeable you are when it comes to your beema, wish i was like that too.
Nevertheless i park mine in winter and use it when the snow season is over.
Snow tires or not,i don't like the idea of having it out there on the road when trucks, suvs etc show off their snow capabilities. My babey is only a 135i.
Thank you! And I totally understand what you mean. Just because we're smart winter drivers, doesn't mean everyone else is. Some kid with bald tires in a truck could easily plow into us. PS: I have a 135i as well and love it.
@@jake_spence That's exactly what i mean! We can becareful all we want but we cannot guarantee the next guy.
Yeah i saw your 135i looks awesome!
Jaja which impact is that you’re using on the video? Love how quiet it is
It's just a cheap no-name from a local Menards. I linked a similar one in the description.
My BMW came with Wheel Hanger stud that works ok
Nice, that's better than nothing! But still not a perfect solution...
This is perfect thanks Jake! Are you running the same spacers on your 135i?
No, I am not. I actually don't run any spacers on the 135i anymore!
Jake Spence Thanks I appreciate it. Keep up the great work you really inspire me and my build!
To help lock the rotor, just pop a small Flathead screwdriver through the caliper in between the rotor vents. When you go to spin the rotor the screw driver will lock it in the caliper!
Another good tip!
Need to get me some. I’m still trying to figure out why they gave bigger rotors and but worse calipers on the 335 compared to the 135.
Do it! And I'm not sure either. My 335i actually seems to brake better.
Did you have to do anything to the tire sensors?
I’ve herd bad things about the thread in studs backing out especially on race tracks, there was a company machining the hubs with press in style studs which was the end all be all solution for studs on a bmw.
Interesting. I've had this kit on my 135i for 4 years and it's seen many tracks and many 170mph+ trips without any issues.
Can you or have you installed X5 wheels on a 3 series BMW (09)?
Wow, I love your garage, I live in London UK, my garage is just about big enough to accommodate my bmw M240i (Alpine white performance edition).
Dang, that's too bad about your garage, but I'm jealous of your M240i!
🙏
Same thing here, I always wanted to have a garage like yours instead of using car jack and car stands.
Especially on my 330i, since you can't use almost anything else except those rubber inserts and then trying to lift the car.
Thank you!
I really like the stock summer wheels
Me too, they're a great design considering they're stock.
When using a torque wrench you just need to let the wrench click once, any more is applying over torque which can stretch the threads and cause possible failure.
Very nice Jake. Are there gonna be future tuning videos? I'm very curious because this year we will buy our first n54 335i, an e93. Because we're addicted to BMW verts ;-). Dutch regards, Nico
Thanks Nico! More performance mods and tuning coming up this spring. Sorry for the delay on this project!
Whats the instrumental in the background?
Where did you get the kit
Lug bolts are easy if you know how to. Keep the bolt in the holes. You wont lose them. When install pick up the wheel by the spokes with your thumb on the head of bolt. Look through the spokes and guid bolt to hole. In your 335 look for the hidden tool that bmw provides. Look in the battery cover. In the tray under the carpet there is a guide pin.
What size spacer you used
Digging those wheels....2003 Z4, 3.0 black.
Nice! Not very often do I see Z4s in my area. Cool cars.
I work on my two BMW's all the time. Why did I think this was a difficult job? Thanks!
Will they work on a e39 with aftermarket 19 inch wheels
I like it ..what size are those bolts .and where I can order them..please.
Everything you need right here: bit.ly/39EvfJS
Please am RICHMOND how can I get some of the nut and the spacer . In USA ?
Where do u get the studs
where did u buy those spacers?
Stick the screw driver in the rotor vent to hold the hub from turning!
That's a good option too!
Didn't expect the stud conversion to be that simple, definitely a mod worth doing for any BMW owner who swaps their wheels in the spring and fall!
Lugbolts are the absolute worst thing ever created
Exactly my thoughts!
Did u need to do any camber adjusting with the spacers or does it fit in the arch ok ?
No adjusting required unless you are really aggressive with the spacers, which I don't recommend.
They really look awesome. I always thought that even if they would stick slightly over they would still look sexy !!!
Thanks! I agree.
Dude where you get the tire rims from awesome vid
Black Voxx Nova Wheels: ebay.to/2MUEdce
General Altimax Arctic Snow Tires: ebay.to/2ZPXdhC
How about using some threaded rod to align the gokes? Afaik VW uses this "special tool" to make wheel install easier. Might be cheaper and almost as convenient as using stud conversion kit
That's an option, but I'd rather install this conversion kit once and never have to deal with it again.
Now for the instance of the Loctite on the lug bolts come off if you want to convert back to the original? (I'm guessing that no one would want to but, I'm just saying in terms of being able to unscrew the bolts)
Edit: Another question; why do you need the impact wrench?
Use blue instead of red. Similar strength but not permanent.
Do you have to have computer re calibrated if you put different size wheels or tyres on, as I put two larger wheels on back of my 520D 2009 and the computer went bonkers .John Tamworth
Depends on how big you went. You must've really changed the ratio.
Do you have to add the spacer to convert the studs? Are the studs too long otherwise? I think spacers are illegal where I am
No, you don't need spacers. They will still work fine without spacers.
I have a 2007 328i black, and I want to do so much things on it to make it look better! Does that kit make the wheels look wider too??
If you use spacers in combination with this kit, it will look wider.
Jake Spence oh shit! Cool! Thank you!
Thank you. I need this. What if I need wheel lock nuts??
Simply purchase the kit in the video description, then add one of these to each wheel: amzn.to/2T7MA8j
fondoo u can bye them
Thanks for the tutorial bud, video liked! What are your thoughts on painting the calipers?
🙏 I've painted the calipers on a few of my BMWs. Love it. Just properly prep them and be careful when painting.
Nice mod. Have my e60 a decade. Was watching Mr Buice and came here.... Subbed.
Right on! Thanks for watching and subbing. Love the E60, would love an M5 one day.
Iam interested to see how the ecs spacers work for you, hopefully no vibrations!
No vibrations here! I've been driving on them for a while now.
Jake Spence good to hear! Ive seen some not so good reviews on the spacers before, hopefully they have the issues figured out.
i have same rims but i got bored of black colour, need to repaint them. Not sure which colour to choose on grey bmw e91 :/
Maybe a nice metallic gunmetal?
Are the wheel studs different lengths based on your spacers or running non spaced wheels?
Joe Ingalls yes but you wouldn’t change the studs to change up the spacers. Just pick a stud length that works and leave them.
As always Jake, great content! I also have a 09 E90N54 and I’m adding the stud kit. Makes complete sense. Feel better soon!
Thanks Steve! Enjoy your E90, you'll be glad you added a stud conversion kit.
Jake Spence thank you for being so approachable and so easy to follow on YT. On the bolts, today I use a wheel stud tool for positioning, which works ok, but it’s a bit inconvenient. Love your lift; wish I could but I’m in a rental house so probably not going to score points from the landlord if she ever saw it. 😲. Then again? Thank you again Jake!
Jake Spence ok, Q about spacers for the stock wheels (I think I have the same pattern as you for your summer tires). Are spacers needed with the stud kit there too?
No spacers are needed. I only want them for looks, to push the wheel a little further out of the wheel well.
My worry about spacers is upsetting the suspension geometry. Will it conflict with Ackermanns principles? Should I be concerned?
I'd have to Google Ackermanns principles. But it's really not much different than getting aftermarket wheels. It changes the width, offset, size, etc.
nice vid, feel better. any thoughts on the 135is?
Thank you, feeling better now! The 135is is great. Comes with an N54 and a DCT trans, can't get much better than that.
@@jake_spence thought it was an n55. im looking for a manual in space grey... we'll see haha. hope youre having a good start to the new year man
Hi Jake, can you please tell me what length studs you used. Thanks
I used this kit with 70mm studs: bit.ly/39EvfJS
Many thanks for the information Jake. Rob
Is there any chance getting an e39 video? Like will it ever happen on your channel
I'd love to do an E39 M5 video one day. Maybe I can see if someone local will let me borrow theirs for a day...
Jake Spence Where are you located? I have a 540 for ya lol
Hey Jake! ITs weird I havent found you before. I love BMW's too and im at the start of working on mine. I wanted to ask a question considering the alloys. Mine is a bmw e87 from 2011. Currently it has 16 inch alloys (205/55/r16) Would 18 in with 225/40/18r lead to clearance issues? (and do i have to watch ET for it) and if you simply dont know, I would just want to know the rim specs on your 335 and if you had to adjust any settings. Cheers! and subbed for more BMW tips :D
Hey, I'm glad you found the channel! Your E87 should be able to fit 225/40/18 wheels. Yes, you will want to watch the ET/offset of the wheels to make sure they will fit properly.
Thanks bro! Next mod for sure
You'll be glad you did!
I am pretty sure we are not allowed to run any kind of spacer out here in Australia..........................also you can just buy yourself one on the studs and use it as a guide to install your wheels
Don't own a BMW yet but maybe the next one. Good info for when I do get one.... One question, heard things about the certain beamers were problematic. Do you know which ones that is?
All of them! Lol, jk. They all have their quirks. Start by figuring out which model(s) you're interested and do your research on those. ///M cars are expensive to maintain and modify. 35i cars can be problematic, and so can 50i cars.
Jake Spence As far as buying a N54/55 car, would you recommend finding one with high mileage but plenty of service records seeing as most things have probably been refreshed or just trying to find a low mile one?
In Vid you state that you torqued these down to 25 ft/lbs which is equal to 33.9 Nm.
According to the manufacturer they should be tightened to 15 Nm so in effect you have over tightened them by over Twice as much!
I just bought a dummy stud to temporarily thread in the bolt hole to center the wheel and thread the bolts in.
That works too!
Man idk. Personally love the way BMW does it. All you need is just extended lug bolts and you rarely have problems like stripped bolts, stripped studs, damage to wheel, etc
You can strip a lug bolt the same way you can strip a stud or lug nut. To me, there is less of a chance for damage with the stud conversion kit because you just slide the wheels on and off. You don't have to worry about holding it on there, dropping it, etc.
@@jake_spence Slide?! on what? on thread? Nice.
Would this conversion convert hub centric to wheel lug centric ?
Sanye no, everything stays hub centric.
Nice!!
🤘
what about a locking wheel nut ? can you lock them ?
Yes! Just buy a set of these, use one on each wheel: amzn.to/35tsOXu
This cool
I have this conversion already.. The problem is.. trying to find the bolt caps.. I have plane black ones that look lame.. I want.. Flame tip color. They make them for hondas toyotas.. ect ect.. but i cant find ones that fit my bmw
Well you're in luck, because I found a set that will fit: bit.ly/2tw9gVd
So what’s the reason for using spacers?
They give your car a more aggressive/wider stance and can also aid in fitting wheels that were manufactured with a more positive offset than what your car can accommodate.
Do the spacers affect the health of the Xdrive system ?
Nope, no worries!
Just purchased a project e46 and the previous owner I guess over torqued the studs and one broke off can you please upload a video on how to fix that😩
If there is any stud left exposed you can use a stud extractor, if not you'll need either a screw extractor or square extractor which both need a hole drilled into the center of the stud
Mathew Mortensen appreciate the response looks like I got some work to do haha
what size spacers do i need to flush my wheels?
If you have a 335i like me, 10mm all around is a good start.
