So when this video started I said to myself "is he going to mention plantation rum?" All of the bottles he brought up I actually have with the exception of the pot still Hamilton. I love rum for its variety. Thanks for the video.
first time I ever got sick/drunk on alcohol, I was in college and it was on Rum & Coke. I am sure it was el-cheapo rum since it was a fraternity Halloween party. Really haven't done much rum since then. I think after 30 years it is time to re-visit rum. Thanks for the vid.
You're so welcome! And yeah there's plenty of stuff i said I'd never drink again, especially tequila after college, but that's because i used to drink Jose Cuervo with Capri Sun 😂
Great video! Always impressed with your commitment to quality and sustainability. I love all Plantation, especially their O.F.T.D. overproof for cocktails. 😋👍
Been getting more curious about rum lately. Thanks for the video, especially the Smith and Cross part. I've been wondering about that one. On Jamiacan rum, what's your opinion on Wray & Nephew?
Great video! Have to echo your praise for Privateer. I have a bottle of their Distiller's Drawer BiB rum and absolutely love it. Perhaps some of my enjoyment is the journey I had actually getting my hands on a bottle out here in California. Definitely recommended.
Hi my friend Lui, I am getting a bottle of Smith & Cross tomorrow. I have the Appleton Estate 8yo and Woods and other rums to 75% ABV. I am very careful to blend the high strength rums in my drinks for I don’t want to blow myself away! Kind regards, Nick frommYork
Hey Nick, that's awesome! Happy you're getting some smith and cross! And yes gotta be careful with the higher abv spirits for sure. But they can be so darn tasty sometimes
This was very good! Agree with demerara in general and Hamilton is particular. The only reason Jamaica should be tolerated is their production of Appleton. Smith & Cross not available everywhere but I’ve had it at the now defunct Tiki Tolteca in NOLA. Very good in rum forward drinks like Zombies. Plantation is a well workhorse regardless. I prefer light agricole in mojitos. Some better body than processed white rums but still clean and doesn’t compete with the mint. Thanks for tip on Privateer! I’ll try it!
You had me worried for a moment that you wouldn’t mention Flor de Cana. Learned of it when I was in Managua with some Costa Ricans and haven’t looked back. I always keep a bottle of 12 year to sip neat
I’m not Haitian but you got to try Barbancout 5 star 8 year at $28 to $30. You can go a step up or (range $20 to $56) down in there selections. Very unique to me and a mainstay. You can find every where in the states. I would appreciate you doing a tasting and give your results.
For whatever reason, I notice comments all begin with "I.". People just enjoy opining. Nevertheless -- YOUR video above covering dosage and utility ... This is a wonderful useful video and may you make more like it and really appreciate your great production. Corey from Florida.
Couldn’t agree more. The only difference I have is due to selection. Being from Michigan I buy Dr Bird as my local rum and I try to keep a cheap white (Plantation 3 Star) and then a little higher quality as I can’t find Flor De Cana so I buy Probitas, Real McCoy 3, or Hamilton White depending on my selection that day.
I finally got some Dr Bird since they don’t sell it in IL. It’s very good I like it a lot. I heard it’s rum from Hampden which is one of the best in Jamaica probably my favorite.
Right now, I use equal parts Jack Daniel's Kentucky Whiskey and Member's Mark Spiced Run in my homemade eggnog. Which rums would you recommend for adding to eggnog?
So Appleton Estate are a reputable, quality buy? I tried the 15 and thought it was quite nice and recently found a 21 for a FANTASTIC price (cheaper than the US and more than HALF of the $250usd they charge in Jamaica 😳) but haven't had the time to sit down with it yet.
Surprised to see Privateer on here. I happened upon a bottle in Westminster, MA. It's the white rum version and I wasn't a huge fan. For a white rum it had a bit of funk. But tonight, before I even saw your video, I made a daiquiri with it. I went from not liking it on first sip to really liking it by the end. It's the sort of thing that grows on you. I wouldn't use it as a well liquor as it may put off people expecting bacardi. Smith and Cross, not sold on it. I actually love the smell of it but it's funk isn't pleasant to me in a cocktail. Maybe I'm not funky enough yet. I love Appleton in a daiquiri. Just enough Jamaican funk.
I agree totally on the Jamaican rums and the Plantation 3 Stars. Hamiltons aren't available on my continent... However, Flor de Cana... Now, I don't like ANY strong booze plain, but that one tasted BAD. I've not tried it in a cocktail yet, so it might prove me wrong... maybe.
For me personally rum gives me migraines after drinking it. But i have found Flor De Cana rum doesn't and it's addictive and sugar free. Right now I am enjoying the 7 Reserva though I have a couple of 12 year and 18 year old which i haven't had yet.
Of the four rums there that I've had, I'd take Appleton Estate 12 year old over the Signature. Yes, it's more expensive but I'm just making cocktails for me. I've been mixing Appleton Estate 12 and Pusser's Gunpowder Proof for most dark rum cocktails. Plantation 3 Stars makes an excellent cocktail like Piña Coladas & Daiquiris I hadn't noticed it's that much sweeter than similar brands but I tend to use less or no extra sugar in recipes. I get why some may like Smith & Cross but I find the bitter grapefruit-rind after-taste unpleasant. To me, the dominant flavor in Flor de Caña 4 is ethanol. It's not for me.
You are completely missing out on the "Rhum Agricole" type, made in the French West Indies. The critical difference is that Rhum Agricole is made from the raw pressed juice of the sugarcane, whereas all of the other rums in the Caribbean are made from molasses. The raw sugarcane juice, called "vezou" is fermented prior to distillation, and the distillate is then filtered with activated charcoal. The result is a rum that has a fresh scent of sugarcane and vanilla, with a clean palate. It is sold white or aged. Probably the best brand, noted among connoisseurs from Martinique, is Neisson - somewhat hard to find in store but available from the distillery in the internet. But there are others, such as Clément, Saint François, etc. Cheaper variants are easier to find in stores, such as Dillon. While Saint James is a rhum agricole, it is the Jose Cuervo of French rums ; not worth its weight in water. Worthy of note as well, is a brown (aged) rum variety made in Haïti, which can be absolutely sublime : Barbancourt. Definitely worth a try. The creole from Guadeloupe and Martinique drink their white rum with a twist of lime and a dash of sugarcane syrup. The most common long drink is the Planteur, which in its best varieties is made with red guava juice, pineapple, a splash of orange, and nutmeg.
Love the Smith n Cross. Over ripe banana on the nose is so prevalent. Funk. Great value.
I thought you click-baited with Smith & Cross on the thumbnail. 😂 Glad it made the list. My absolute FAVORITE! 🤙🏽
Hahahahahaha happy you clicked to find out tho! 😁 But yes it's such a great bottle!
I love Appleton estate rums. My favorite is Appleton estate 8 reserve. I think it’s really smooth.
I agree! It's quite delicious!
The Appleton 12 Rare Blend is not much more expensive. It has more funk and flavor than the 8 year old
@@roymaddocks3184 Just got a bottle of the 12 year and MY GOODNESS! Made a beautiful mai tai!

You're so welcome hahaha and happy you stuck around 😁 glad to know we have similar tastes in rum!
LOVE smith & cross!!! I probably go through more S&C than any other bottle.
It's soooo good!

Plantation Isle of Fiji and 3 Star.
Both great!

I love the non tequila spirit reviews!!
Happy you're enjoying them! 😁🙏
Will u do a review on zacapa rum from guatemala
What would your recommendation be for Pina Coladas?

I’ve tried the flor de Cana 4 year Anejo Oro. It was good on the rocks and in a piña colada
I think the quality is excellent of Flor de caña!
@@Lui_Fern I agree plus the 1.75L is $19 at total wine.
@@coreysturghill7656 such a great price.

Whats the best rums to use in a rum runner?
What are your thoughts on mount gay, coconut cartel, Koloa, diplomatico and plantation?

Appleton estate is so good in almost anything.
Totally agree with you!

How about a shout out to Hamilton 87 White Stache? I like to use it in drinks that call for white rum.
You should try Probitas
It's been on my list to try for sure!
Where are you located? Because where I'm at, that appleton estate is about $34.
Give Kuleana Hokulei a try--amazing rum!
I've been meaning too. I have heard good things.

Flor de Cana is column stilled. Rums with pot stilled content have much more funk and flavour
We need more Mexican style Rums in the US. They have such a unique flavor
Now everyone is gonna come to my store looking for these lol

And we can't get any of these in Australia 😭
You need some Alambique Serrano
I do! I need to try it.
what's up with pouring the drink into a bigger glass? looks strange
Is spiced rum a real rum?
Finally got some badass rum bottles and can confirm its not real😅

What are your thoughts on a rum like Bacardi? I’m curious, are there any rums we should stay away from?
LOL Booze is SO cheap in the states. Look at minimum AU$60 for a bottle of booze
I have a Appleton estate 12 year and it's terrible. Not sure what it is but don't like it
Why would you name your Rum Plantation 🤔
Because a lot of sugar cane is grown on plantations.
talk too much
Don't watch then
