My 10 FAVORITE Rums

- We've all got our list of favorite rums. Rums that we think are the best, the ones we go back to over and over again.
I want to talk about my 10 favorite rums. I’m not saying these are the best rums out there or anything like that. We all understand that there’s no such thing as the best. Flavor and aroma, drinking they’re all just subjective experiences. So instead I’m focusing on my favorites, the rums that either mean the most to me because they are tied to a particular experience or memory, or I just think they are really tasty.
Also, to be clear I’m only featuring bottles that I actually own. I’ve had some incredibly memorable rum tasting experiences either at a bar or at a festival but that’s a video for another day.
Alrighty, Let’s get into the list, which is in no particular order:
Chapters:
0:00 Intro
0:38 Hampden Estate Rum Fire
1:47 Ko'Hana Kila
2:56 Neisson Eleve Sou Bois
4:14 Uruapan Charanda Blanco
5:33 La Maison & Velier Flag Series Trinidad 2002
7:13 Maggie's Farm Sherry Cask Aged Rum
8:52 Clairin Sajous
10:24 Clairin Le Rocher
11:53 St. George California Agricole Rum
13:27 Appleton Estate 12 Year Rare Casks

As someone deep into whisky, I know little about rums or where to start. Thanks for the excellent suggestions. Great channel! Looking forward to more vids.
Right on! Thanks! Great channel btw. looking forward to learning more about whisky
One of my favorite whisky reviewers out exploring like myself 😊
Oh! Hi, Phil! Fellow whiskey nerd here!
And yes, I've been trying to learn more about rums myself. This channel is pretty great.
Welcome to the dark side of spirits!
Great video and I love the personal story behind each pick!
Thanks, Neil!!
Love this and love your picks! It actually reminded me I have to pull out that skull and crown bottle which I haven’t touched in a long time but love! They also made a Pinot noir finished rum that is AMAZING.
Thanks so much, Kim! That Pinot finish was soooooooo good!
Great List, I live in Pittsburgh and love maggies farm, im happy the hospitality and compassion of this city travels, as well as tasty rum!
Awesome! I love their Falernum too! So much flavor
Excellent video! So cool to see your favorites and compare them to mine!
Thanks so much!
Thanks for the insight. You’re a great speaker. You’ve got me wanting to hunt rum!
Thanks so much! Happy rum hunting!
This was awesome 👌🏾. I love how the channel is growing. I've got four of your favorites in my collection. There are lots of grassy flavors in there. You know those Clarins were about 29.99 at a liquor store here in Atlanta, and over about a month, they sold out. Fast forward last week while in NY, I saw them for $45 😢. Mercy.
$30?? Wow, what a steal. I would have stocked up.
Thanks for giving some really great tips!
My pleasure!
Your camera presence is great. Feels like I'm in the room getting a great rum lecture! Now to track down some of these bottles...
Thank you so much!
I absolutely love your comments on Appleton 12. That’s exactly how I feel about that bottle, it will always be special to me, and I always have a bottle in stock! It’s just standard for my rum bottles.
Thanks! Yeah, its a total classic and it would feel weird not to have it in my pantry
I have always loved Captain Morgan Private Stock. It is my favorite drink. Great content 👌🏾
Thanks!
What a diverse lineup! Le Rocher is definitely top of my list!
That's awesome. Such a fun spirit!
I haven’t tried many on this list but your comments on Appleton 12 hit home. When I decided to pick up a better bottle of rum to sip neat I grabbed a Flor De Cana 12 and an Appleton 12. The FDC didn’t do it for me but the Appleton spoke to me. Easy decision to restock every time I kill a bottle.
Yeah, its always nice to have a bottle of Appleton 12 stocked up
This was a fun video to watch and to listen to the stories. Well done. Unfortunately, I have not seen any of these brands in my market except for obviously Appleton. One of my favorites is Origenes 8 yrs by Alcoholes y Rones de Panamanian
Looking forward to more videos!!
Thanks so much! Oh, I haven't had that. I'll keep an eye out for it.
Incredible explanation. Love it.
Thank you!
I live in PA and our rum selection is piss poor! I always pass on Maggie's will need to give it a try now! Happy to see you are making rum specific content. Sipping rum is 100% my spirit of choice!
Thanks! I've been pleasantly surprised by their rums.
The unaged paranubes I had the same experience with as you did so many of those bottles. At first I was really put off by the cheesy vogurty aroma of the rum, but in a month or two grew to absolutely love it. Its similarity to a Pachuga is really striking. Great list.
I had the same experience with Paranubes. Love it now, but I bounced off it so hard the first time I had it.
Great video, love it!
Thanks so much!
Apple Estate 12 is at the top of my favorite rum list! Its the rum that made me realize a great rum is on par with the best bourbons or scotches. Its an all-time classic and everyone should own a bottle of it.
Couldn't agree more!
I’m a whiskey drinker but, I always keep a bottle of Dos Maderas 5+5 nearby. I love that stuff!
That's awesome. I'll dabble with Irish whiskey here and there.
Thanks for sharing. Among my favorite rums are Bambu, Afrohead, Havana Club 7, Ron del Barrilito 3-Star, and Zacapa 23.
Nice! I really enjoy RdB 3 and HC7 old fashioneds
Great list!
Thank you!
This has made me polish and aim my rum tastes. I got into rums more a few years ago and I am now a summer rum drinker. I am usually a whisky bourbon and beer guy the rest of the year, but in the summer, is def Rum for my liquor choice. This should start. I have tried Bumbu, plantation and I need to try El Dorado. I have not seen these brands shown here in this vid. I’m over in Georgia.
Rum distribution is definitely more spotty than whiskey. Even some of the bigger brands aren’t available everywhere. Maybe you can order online?
Finally, the last rum was from a brand even I know 😁 In my defense, I live in Finland and rum isn't really a thing over here apart from Bacardi & coke and that's... well you know. Really interesting video and list!
Thanks for watching!
Hey thanks for your videos! I’m new to the channel and suspect I’ll be watching them all in short order! I love what I know about rum, but it seems infantile compared to what you are showing. Thanks for all the great info!
Thanks so much for watching! Plenty for all of us to learn when it comes to rum
Great selection. AE 12 is my number 2. And #1 is JM XO 45%
The XO is so good!
Lmao the Rum Fire label never fails to make me laugh. It's one of the biggest, baddest, most serious bottles in the liquor store and yet, here's some graphic we whipped up in photoshop in 10 minutes. Reminds me of the Agni Kai scene from ATLA. It's so bad, it's good again. I hope they never change it.
The Neisson ESB bottle is indeed 10/10 aesthetic. The bottle shape is so space efficient! I just finished my ESB bottle and I can't let it go! Although I prefer both the Reserve Speciale for when I want to taste the wood, and the Blanc for when I want to taste the distillate. Rhum Vieux par Neisson from Ed Hamilton has a similar, slightly woodier profile compared to ESB that you may enjoy.
The watercolor painting on the Clairin Sajous box is very beautiful! I'd also love a large version of the painting to put on the wall.
My experience with Appleton 12 was the exact same. First big splurge, I found it noticeably funky, and it became a cocktail workhorse. I bought a bottle just for making daiquiris and sipping on my honeymoon. Lots of good memories. It's still a very frequent mixer, but now it barely registers on my funk scale.
Totally agree - Hope they never change the Rum Fire label. I'm surprised how much I like the NEisson Reserve Speciale, even at that lower proof.
There are so many great ones to choose from.
Paranubes
Savanna Herr
Rum Fire
Smith and Cross
Savanna Herr 10 from 2006
Rhum JM XO
Romdeluxe Limited Batch Series Port Mourant
Clairin Sonson and Sajous
Lately I've fallin in love with Tequila and Mezcal too. They have a lot to offer when you like unaged spirits.
Great list! Big fan of Paranubes
interesting picks, definitely wanna try some clarin sometime, I am thinking of doing a similar video soon, but one of my memorable rums is Barti Spiced a really unique rums if you haven't tried it be curious to see if you like it!
Clairins are amazing! I haven't tried any Barti but I'll keep an eye out for it
Your list is Excellent! I agree with a lot of your picks and the rest I just have not tried the :)
My top 10 today would be:
- clairin sajous
- clairin communal
- longueteau constellation
- jm eleve sous bois
- appleton 12
- hampden 8 years (classic green)
- plantation pineapple
- mount gay xo
- plantation fiji
- plantation oftd
Great list! Really want to try that longueteau constellation! Hampden 8 and MGXO are favs as well!
Yeah that longueteau constellation is hard to get but excellencerhum might well ship it to you. Lebardelours (in French) did a review and frankly this is THE funkiest funnest agricole I've had in years.
Side note the 2018 sajous is amazing indeed, better than the 2019 and 2020 I find (also saju, don't pronounce de la last s I think)
The commentary on Sajous and le Rocher exactly matched my experience. Le Rocher is definitively an acquired taste, whereas with Sajous, it was love at first sip! I have also tried the Clairin Casimir, that one is a firm no for me. With Le Rocher, it seems to improve every time I try it.
Yeah exactly. I immediately fell for Sajous. Rocher takes some time
Your prononciation of French is pretty good actually!
Whew! what a relief lol
I'm a but late to the party, but your pronunciation for eleve sous bois is pretty spot on :)
whew! thanks! lol
Great video, if only I could get more than 1 of those where I live 😮💨
Thanks, and yeah I wish rums were a bit more easily accessible.
Interesting selection
Thanks!
Consider getting a wine saver top (with vacuum pump) for the small bottle of Kohana if you intend to keep it for long!
Yeah good point! Thanks for the reminder
Have you seen any vintage of clairin sajous after 2020? I have not seen any past that for quite some time, a few years ago when I first tried it I had seen multiple vintages going back to 2018 or 17 and nothing after 2020 for a while now
I don’t think we’ve gotten anything past 2020. However I did see the the Whiskey Exchange in London has the 2021
@@therumrevivaldo you think they are still making it and newer vintages are sitting in warehouses until the older are gone?
@@yankchef4067 they're definitely making more - part of it might be working through existing inventory, plus we tend to lag behind Europe for releases. I suspect we might see newer vintages towards the latter half of the year
Brilliant video! Could you do a top 10 beginner rum😊
1. RUM FIRE
2. Rum Bar White
3. Wray and Nephew Overproof
4. Hampden DOK
5. Long Pond TECC
6. New Yarmouth NYE/HK
7. Le Galion Grande Arome
8. Rivers Royal Grenadian
9. Pere Labat Organic
10. Savanna HERR
That should be a nice introduction for a beginner.
Yes absolutely, hopefully have a video out on that in about a month
Thanks y’all 😁 I also bought a bottle of RL Seales 12 years this week and have been enjoying it a lot!
RL Seales 12 is a great Bajan rum. Cheers!@@blakeliu3713
I’m new to the rum show! I’m in California also and was wondering if you have tried the Bribery brand from BevMo?
I haven't seen that brand, but will keep an eye out for it.
Perhaps Fassionola could work as a sub for the Papaya syrup? I too am not a Papaya fan but I do love Fassionola.
I think you'll like the, Charanda Anejo
I have a bottle and love it
enjoyed my share of Johnny walkers, royal salutes, Ballentines in my 20s, then moved on away from it. Recently downed a bottle of Glefiddich and it didn't hit like it did in my 20s..Just tasted like wood only...am i getting old?
I know the feeling. I recently revisited some of the spirits I used to drink over 20 years ago and they were not how I remember them.
Would you say 190 is a good price for the La Maison bottling?
Yes, if you can find it that is a good price
Ive been telling everyone about the sajous. I'm trying to track down all the vintages but from what it seems like they don't make a lot
Sajous is the best! I believe the 2020 vintage just came out. Need to get my hands on it.
@@therumrevival o yea I've got 5 bottles of that. Everything pre 2020 is tougher to find local in Houston
wow! only rum i ever heard and can find in my location in this contents is Appleton Estate 😅
A lot of these are personal favs that are a bit more obscure.
How does Rum Fire compare with Wray & Nephew White Overproof?
Wray & Nephew feels thinner on the palate and is less juicer in comparison. At least for me.
Dude have you ever tried Canerock Spice Rum ??
I haven't, how is it?
Have you had the chance to get into any of the Renegade Rums? The story has me intrigued but not sure how much of it is just smoke and mirrors. I would have to order it so bottles will get pricey with shipping.
I have 3 of the unaged bottlings and I am planning on doing a video on the coming months. Love what they're doing in terms of transparency and detail that is available on each rum. So far all three rums I have are good. Not mind blowing but really solid.
For me El Dorado 12 year will always be special. It was the first rum I tried neat and thought "that's not bad".
I rarely drink it now, and I know they've reformulated since (still great in my opinion) but I feel a connection to where it all began.
Ironically, Demerara rums are, on the whole, pretty low rank for me. I just can't stand anything from the wooden stills. It tastes like a cheap blended whiskey.
ED12 was definitely one of those early rums I tried, like Appleton 12, that blew my mind. I wish they'd release a higher proof version.
Try Maggie’s Farm rum. They’ve won many national awards.
Big fan of Maggie’s Farm!
Can we ban metal screw tops on rum.
I'd sign the petition
WOW, no El Dorado 12, or 15?
I'm a big fan of both
Have you ever tried:
AH Riise Ultra Rare?
I have not. Have you? How is it?
@@therumrevival Best Rum I have ever tried and it’s not even close. If you can get your hands on it.
No Flor De Cana in sight???
Nothing against it, just not a sentimental favorite for me.
I live in North Carolina, and NONE of these rums are available here. Not a single one. And our laws prohibit mail-order, or ordering online. So thanks for turning me on to 10 rums that I'll probably never taste...
Bummer! In that case, I hope you come across some of these in your travels.
I appreciate your take on subjective experiences, but this list is sooo subjective, it's really of no use to someone looking for reviews or advice.
You are right. It isn't and wasn't meant for someone looking for reviews or advice. As the first 25 seconds makes it clear, the video is just that, a subjective list of rums and my subjective experiences and memories around them. I wanted to make that very clear up front so, if that was not what someone wanted out of the video, they could stop watching then and there.
@@therumrevival Ok, next time I'll punch out faster. My mistake.
I would drink all of those but appleton is the only one ive seen in florida agricoles are among my favorites
I wish rum distribution was a bit more even throughout the country. Especially cane juice rums.
