I rewatched all of them recently & I think This is honestly lowkey my Favorite of the series just cause I love the Rocky & Apollo Rival to Friends trope like Goku & Vegeta. The Training scene with Both of em still gets me amped
Right there with u man! I absolutely love this one for the way it develops Apollo, he was already great in the first 2 films but after this he was legendary!
Two hilarious lines from Mr. T I'm sad u guys didnt talk about 1. I reject the challenge, because Balboa is no challenge. But I'll be more than happy to beat up on him some more. 2. Come on, CREED!
People somehow say Ivan Drago is the best Rocky villain, but Drago literally had like 5 lines of dialogue in the entire movie. Clubber Lang was so entertaining and charismatic that you can almost say that he steals this film.
🙂 The awesome part of this movie is that everything Clubber Lang said about Rocky was 100% correct... Best part of that "eye of the tiger intro montage" is that Clubber is observing Rocky but Mickey is also observing Clubber and KNEW at this point Rocky wasn't ready for a beast of a fighter like that... Mickey was helping and hurting Rocky at the same time by "ducking" Clubber... Clubber earned his way to the top and had every right to be mad at Rocky/Mickey... Movie is alot deeper than many think... 😂 "Hey woman HEY WOMAN !" by Mr T is one of the most legendary lines in the series along with "There is no tomorrow" by Apollo...💯
To me, the Eye of the Tiger montage shows Rocky having & subsequently losing the Eye, while Clubber gains it. Then the next 2 times we hear the song, it's an instrumental as Rocky's struggling, not actually having it. But the final time we hear it is the end credits, when he's regained it back with Apollo's help & it's in the full glory. Hence, the freeze frame on the 2 friends sparring. But that's just my take. EDIT: I wrote this before watching.
The way Mr T delivered his lines were hilarious & scary at the same time. Rocky 3 is my favorite especially the training scene for the rematch, Apollo taught Rocky how to box instead of being a punching bag
What I love about the Eye of the Tiger montage is we think its meant for Rocky, but then we see Clubber training with the intensity and drive and realize he's actually the one the song is talking about.
"So many times, it happens too fast You trade your passion for glory Don't lose your grip on the dreams of the past You must fight just to keep them alive" That sounds like Rocky's story in this movie to me.
What made Rocky’s reaction to Micks death so sad was that since the first movie he’s been reading, and working on his annunciation, trying to sound more educated. When Micky dies, that all goes out of the window. He’s just done. Nothing else matters.
A fun fact: mr T mother wasn’t happy he was talking to rocky wife like that in the statue scene. She walk of the theater after that and told her son I didn’t raise you to talk like that to a woman… it’s a movie 😂 but I get it. 32:50
Im surprised people dont talk about the scene where Paulie walks into the minority gym or the rocky aint got no rhythm bit. Has Double Toasted written all over it 😂
Rocky 3 was my favorite growing up, and still one of my favorites in the franchise. I've always said Clubber Lang is the greatest villain in the Rocky franchise, because he actually has valid reasons for being pissed that he hasnt gotten a title shot. I also loved that even though he was an asshole, he legitimately busted his ass and worked hard to get where he was, and he's the only opponent to actually succeed in knocking Rocky out.
Please keep doing these Retro Reviews. I love how it’s more of a study with comedy sprinkled in while a roast is all comedy. Fittingly it makes sense as Pastor Korey Coleman these retro reviews can be like “sermons” lol
This is my favorite of the series. There's something about seeing a hero at the top, fall down, and pick themselves back up. Like spiderman 2. And here it's great to see his opponent Apollo of all people be the one to help and turn him into a great fighter again.
It also has one of my favourite Rocky Adrian moments on the beach where he says to her I'm Afraid Stallon is always writing both lovebale and hateble characters, their relationship to the end of 5th film is great, even with the 5th film the writing may not be good but their relationship writing is on point and very believeble
Not only is Rocky III the most original of the Rocky sequels, it's the beginning of what eventually becomes the Creed trilogy. It's probably the most vital film in the franchise.
39:39 I never noticed it as a kid, mostly because the "lore" of Clubber Lang outweighed it, but Apollo Creed is way bigger than Clubber Lang. Clubber would've gotten his ass whooped in a match against Apollo! 🤣
This is actually the very reason this story has a special place in my heart. There are so many different but real stories under it being a boxing movie.
I took it as Thunderlips went shoot and did the moves on Rocky and then sold when he returned fire, he just didn’t let Rocky in on it for a more realistic match. That’s what he meant by “name of the game.” Although by wrestling standards what he did was wrong and is considered “going into business for themselves.”
I always crack the fk up when Clubber is taunting Rocky after he knocks him down in the 2nd round of their first fight. "GET UP ITALIAN!!!!!!! Come on! Let's see what you gonna do n*gga!!!!" Yes, he says that. Him letting it slip reminds me of when it happened to Booker T. 😆
Echoing Chris, I do appreciate the focus on choreography in the rocky films. It's very well done in creed as well, with heavier emphasis on camera work, but I think the Rocky films highlight the individual styles of the fighters more.
From a Boxing standpoint Clubber Lang is the perfect example of the contender who’s a threat to the champ who gets closed out and forced to play the heel. Just like one of the inspirations for his character Sonny Liston. Sonny was supposed to fight Floyd Patterson for the championship but Floyd’s manager Cus kept him away from Sonny mirroring Mick and Rocky. Only issue is that’s hard to build on screen lol.
I honestly thought the scene Korey was talking about with Paulie was this exchange "I don't like these people, I got a reputation to uphold." "Maybe they dont like you either Paulie." "What did I ever do to them?!"
Stallone actually wanted, Everyone Bites the Dust but Queen didn't let or didn't want to. He hired Survivor to write an original song. Pretty cool story
Sylvester Stallone said he ran out story ideas after Rocky 2, so he had this and Rocky 4 be more about the fighting and training than other things like the first 2 movies
That and the real life Rocky, Chuck Wepner who fought Muhammad Ali who is clearly the inspiration for Apollo Creed and a few years later before this film Chuck stepped in the ring with Andre the Giant who was the inspiration for Thunder Lips.
Martins incorrect, it was the Minnesota based AWA and Verne Gagne who fired Hogan. Hogan was having a series of matches with Nick Bocwinkel at the time for the AWA title. Vince McMahon saw the potential and picked Hogan up right after that.
I remember seeing Sylvester Stallone starring on "The Muppet Show," and it was quite clever how they used clips of it in the montage as if Rocky had starred on the show.
And I'm a black man from Camden NJ... The hood and my youngest son who I 17 now but when he was 8 he want all the the rocky movies DVD collection for Christmas and got it and still have it
So much like Michael B Jordan directing and writing the 3rd Creed movie. Sylvester Stallone wrote and directed the third Rocky. Didn't know that so I guess we've come full circle. Also, yes it is true and interesting that Rocky's journey is similar to Stallone's and that he worked it into the story for this one 😎.
Back in the day, wrestlers did everything the could to make the public believe pro wrestling was real. Andy Kaufman even wrestled random women from the audience and the women he wrestled against thought they were in a real fight--until the "Man on the Moon" biopic came out. They didn't want to expose "the business" to non-wrestlers because they thought that if the public knew it was fake, they wouldn't want to watch.
One of the funniest trivia I read about this was that Mr T's mom was pissed at the line Clubber Lang said to Adrian. She said to her son "I didn't raise you to talk to a lady like that". Then she stormed out of the theater

There are some legitimately strong dramatic storypoints in this movie. But it's completely overshadowed with how over-the-top, and how somewhat unaware the rest of the movie is LOL. I hope Double Toasted will consider reviewing these: Bloodsport Revenge of the Ninja No Retreat No Surrender 1 Airborne (Seth green) Can't hardly wait Tremors 1 or 2 Tales from the crypt demon knight Toys (Robin williams) Major league 1 or 2
Carl Weathers was absolutely spectacular in an episode of Starsky and Hutch titled NIGHTMARE. He played a supporting character that should’ve gotten his own series. Great episode directed by Randall Kleiser, guest, starring Diana, Scarwid, and Gerrit Graham.
I'm glad someone finally points out that the fighting looked better in the Rocky franchise as opposed to the Creed franchise. Give me the wide shots and shotgun sound effects all day long. It's Hollywood and it's a fake fight and the closer you get to the choreographed action, the more unrealistic it seems in an odd way. It's hard to explain but I much prefer the fighting scenes in the original Rocky films.
“Hey woman! Hey woman!!” Never gets old 😂

Rocky III is the best of the series. Period.
35:26 the item she is holding is an old school kids' blow up punching bag. There was one for every hot IP in the 80s. I had one with He-Man on it.
48:37 Martin killed me with that one! 🤣 😂 Put the subtitles on and it's just question marks.
Martin with the SAT vocab on display with "Titular" character
I personally would've went with "eponymous hero" but that's just me.
21:24 tf was that noise Lmao
As ugly of a cry it is, to me its actually very genuine. When you are devastated and cry heavily that is very close to what it sounds like imo.
But then there've also been ugly cries on the internet that have resulted into being funny memes.
I hope Double Toasted will consider reviewing these:
Bloodsport
Revenge of the Ninja
No Retreat No Surrender 1
Airborne (Seth green)
Can't hardly wait
Tremors 1 or 2
Tales from the crypt demon knight
Toys (Robin williams)
Major league 1 or 2
Carl Weathers was absolutely spectacular in an episode of Starsky and Hutch titled NIGHTMARE.
Although it’s not exactly an action movie, the dialogue in this one had a huge influence on all action movie lingo going forward for decades
Please do the first Rocky cause I know y'all would trip on how Paulie and Rocky forced Adrian to date Rocky 😅😂
