They totally should have had a warp whistle challenge in Mario 3. Even though it’s corny as heck, The Wizard is one of my all time favorite movies. I love how Haley is all like, “That’s the magic flute, it opens up the warp! Use it! Use it!” Um, this is supposed to be a game you’ve never, ever, seen before, right? How do you know what the whistle does? And how is warping worlds going to help Jimmy’s score anyways? He already wasted time playing the mushroom house game that only gives lives, not points, what is warping worlds going to do? And why is it important he gets the star, the star? What scoring system are they using here? Great movie.
I think for Lost Levels, the level 7-3 could have been a fun challenge, where, once you start your first jump you are only allowed to touch the springboards but not the ground, aka when you fall down you actually have to land directly on the next springboard and proceed to the right as far as possible.
Agree hard on the Mario 3 world 1 challenge. I was very pissed off when I went to grab the whistle, because it's the fastest way to finish the castle and this is a speedrun, and I got the "not allowed" message. Also immediately thought of the movie lol. EDIT: also find it kinda infuriating how a lot of challenges last 1 second while the start countdown lasts 3.
My biggest issue is no leaderboards or way to see what the best possible time you can get on the mini games. Give me something to strive towards. No idea in all the S ranks I've gotten if their the best.
Leaderboards on any Nintendo game would just be hacked times of something like 1 millisecond everywhere. I believe the best would be for some players to host a website with all the best user-submitted times with video proof, and add a "points" system based on your rank on each challenge. E.G: 1st place is 100 points, 2nd place is 99 points, 3rd 98, and so on. The player with the highest overall "points" is the true champion. People would compete for the best times on each challenge and would try to lower the overall total time as a community. Just like it's done in Super Smash Melee's Break the Target community, or the Perfect Dark/Goldeneye community (The-elite net). This could lead to some interesting competition at semi long-term. Though most challenges will be maxed out really quickly and impossible to improve further.
One thing they should have done is had each game have the option to just play through the entire game with a timer and ranking, and then provide the ability to do races with your friends through the entire game for each one. Racing my friends in Zelda 2 or Mario 3 would be a blast.
@@jordanneal576 That's the point though. It has to be cost effective. Noone wants to spend costly man hours implementing a feature that 5 people are gonna use twice and then never again.
I don't know if Ryu ever played the 3DS GAME NES Ultimate Remix, but that got a lot of what he was asking for. Especially the mixing of games for new content. Like "Collect all the coins" but it's Kirby in a Mario sub-Area 😅
My idea is that they could have the full games and sliders. Like in SMB1 you could slide it from 1-1 to 9-4. An example of this would be like 3-2 to 6-4 or 1-1 to 1-4 or just 4-4. Also getting to pick your startup power up would be a nice addition.
Kinda of wish they would have included the full versions of the games and then challenges levels that are a little more in depth. Let the newer players play the games, once they hit internal check points in the originals it would unlock these additional challenges and open doors online.
This was why I enjoyed The NES Remix games on the Wii U much more. I felt like they did this concept right. Its cool if they want to rip out a few identical moments from the old games, but make the challenges more involved, too many tutorial missions. I wouldve liked to see most of the game be remixed layouts of stages and enemies using the original game engines. NES Remix did this, from what I remember, so Im sure they couldve pulled it off. There is also much better games than some of these first party licensed NES games, if they wouldve gotten some licenses. Metal Storm, Little Samson,Contra, Bucky O Hare, Batman, Shatterhand,Jackal to name a few. No Punchout is a missed opportunity too. It seems like Nintendo has actively tried not to release Punchout challenges or games, even in some of the compilations theyve done, which is almost like what this is.
NES Remix needs more love and being locked on the Wii U / 3DS is such a shame. It wasn't perfect, but it had such potential. The saddest part is how much DNA this shares with it... almost seems to be some of the same team. Makes me wish they ported Remix over alongside this.
RYU needs to be a Nintendo consultant. What do we need to do to give him a louder voice with Nintendo? They could have him fly out and test the content for a couple days, give feedback and deliver us a better product! So close yet so far Nintendo. Love the content Ryu, keep up the incredible content.
I think the speedrun challenges should have just been individual levels with the master challenge being to beat the whole game a lá Mario Master with games like Balloon Fight, Ice Climber, and Donkey Kong being high score challenges. I don't know if that would be a little ambitious so to speak, but I think the games should be played in bigger chunks so it doesn't get old too fast.
It's so cringe how the online mode is racing against 7 inept ghost times rather than actual players. And they added "hype" sound effects as if this is good lmao....
i dont see why it needs to be "real time" you are racing yourself and probably safe to stay away from lag and you could see everyone going the luigi jump strategy to unlock the door..i still dont think this will hurt it
They already did NES remix on 3DS and Wii U, so they can make new challenges and stuff in these game’s engines. I’m not sure why they didn’t go with that direction plus the speed running aspect. That would have been so much more fun.
12:00 It's easy for a god-gamer to get S-rank on a minute long challenge. Now imagine a noob gamer playing at 90% for a full minute. Not going to happen. But they can probably manage it for a few seconds. So the shorter challenges need to have tighter timers.
Nintendo seems like a company that doesn't know or care about their biggest fans. They've got a bit of a reputation for trying to do _just_ enough with old titles that they don't lose the copyright, while still not making them readily available-at least not on the long term. This game feels like that to me. They've maintained the copyright on these games and made money off of them again, while not even needing to pay someone who knows or cares about the games to come up with cool challenges. Imagine if they hired some real speedrunners.
Given that a challenge is basically just a save state and a win condition, it's absolutely ridiculous how few there are and how insubstantial they are. The hardest part about making one of these is coming up with the title.
I'd say I agree with you on all points. Challenges aside, the game needs a real live mode where you queue into a random lobby of other players with a random set of challenges and you battle it out. Afterwards you re-queue to get a new lobby and new set of challenges. So basically a never-ending and rarely repetitive live PvP mode. The challenges themselves need a lot of re-working...and can we just not have Ice Climbers and the balloon game at all? I don't recall anyone ever having either of those games when I was a kid (I'm NES generation).
@@andreaseriksson9225 Personally no. I ranked it above all other nes games. I created so many tracks! Blades on Steel also being another favorite of mine. Snes was Mario Paint and mk1, I am just that type person.
Is that really faster? You need to turn around in any case and the mushroom moves to the right. So the way he does it, moving to intercept the mushroom, should be a shorter way to go.
It would actually be cool if every challenge had a second part to it. So Mushzoom 1 is getting the first mushroom, but the second part could be getting the flower. And i really hope they add more games for more challenges. Like: Mega Man, Contra, Battletoads, Castlevania, Ducktales, Chip n Dale, Turtles, Batman, Double Dragon, more sportgames (like RC Pro-AM or Track and Field).
I want to see your results from last week! That’s the best part of the game, seeing how much you could have shaved off. Even with the shortest challenges, there is someone doing much better, it’s insane how much depth these games had.
For those who bought this game, Nintendo sent me an email asking me to do a servey about my satisfaction with it. Please fill out the survey. Maybe they’ll listen to us and do DLC for it, free updates and include things we should have gotten like being able to see leaderboards for all challenges, see where you rank in regular speedrun mode, play with others online and maybe add more games like contra and punch out
I thought that they would include more challenges where the general strategy works fine, but there's a secret strategy to doing it *way* faster. The one in SMB2 where you have to cross the gap and grab the key comes to mind. You can cover the gap much faster by skipping the flying carpet and jumping on top of the flying enemies. But you can still get an S if you use the carpet method.
You made some good points - some of the challenges are boring. Some of the boring ones do have a purpose - like the Mario going up the platform before a flag. For me I lose a TON of momentum trying to get up those dang platforms, so I like that there is a challenge where I can practice that one part of the game over and over again until I get better at making it up consistently without losing speed. So at least in the case where the “boring” challenges prepare you to tackle something you will have to deal with in the big speed run, I am a fan.
I Was (Like you) excited when I first heard of this game. Then I saw an ad with some of the challenges. I went from looking into a Day one purchase to more of a "wait and see" I'm glad I did. The game looks like it's going to need a lot of DLC love!
The reason all the super easy challenges are in there that confuse you is because they need to establish the game mechanics for people who have never played before. It's tutorialization. The issue isn't that they are present, its that the total number of challenges per game are so few.
This is one of those games where I WANT to play it but the content is underwhelming. Based off of how short and simple so many of these games are, they should have had five times as many challenges. Instead I am left waiting until Monday to get another set of challenges to compete with. Had the same gripe with Warioware Get it Together too.
I’ve been a speedrunner for several years and I 100% agree with you. About 90% of the speedrun challenges are extremely stale. Not to mention I’m use to running on a CRT with 0 frames of input lag vs the roughly 4 frames of lag we get with this game (I’m just being nitpicky with that). I agree. Soo much potential. Especially when they have every game in the Nintendo catalog that can be chosen as your favorite game to only have 13 games with some of the lamest challenges I’ve ever done.
In the second Lost Levels challenge (the Koopa jump), there is a trick there where you can hit the flying Koopa on the rising part of your jump and launch up to the top of the platform on the right...I'm guessing thats what Nintendo was going for with that challenge. However, they should have made the timing for S-rank a bit tighter in order to necessitate using that trick
Party mode is nice if you have friends or family. But unfortunately that's just local for the moment, I would like to see Party Mode extended to play your friends online.
Could have definitely used more kill x amount of *enemy here* or at the very least more then just 1 to clear. At the very least that would create a bit of diversity in routes people would take to take them out in the quickest time, which ones to go for and which ones to ignore.
Love the early 90's graphic engine aesthetics of Arcade games era; reminds me of the immortal 'Metal Slug' :D Kinda makes me miss the quality of games 'Made in Japan' in 90's n early 00's . I was so close to visiting it at one point. Had xp with MoCap and in late 2015 I was in contact with Capcom about the facial likeness role of Leon for the Resident Evil 2 Remake. I failed to mention I also have a voice acting background, in the end I lost the part and I can't forgive myself for wasting such an opportunity to visit the place that inspired artists like Toriyama and movies like 'Akira' and 'Ghost in the Shell'.
You have to consider that most of the Switch players are really young and are experiencing theses games for the first time. That's why there is some challenges that are really easy for experienced Nintendo players.
Its almost like Nintendo doesn't comprehend online play. I've had a switch for 2 years and I never use it because I feel like I'm in a ghost town. When I'm on Xbox I see all my friends ,and we all are in parties. It feels alive.
It did one thing made me want to play kid Icarus on NES Nintendo switch online. I think Nintendo can make more challenges for the future maybe add a bronze too. So another wave of challenges better than these ones currently, It does feel like a demo game.
From what I've seen I 100% agree and I'm glad you guys bought it so I didn't have to. I don't see them fixing it with dlc. I thought $30 was a lot for 14 NES games, now I realize it's actually way less than that cause you get such a tiny portion of already small games
Imagine if this game allowed you full access to the games and the ability to create and post your own speed runs for others to try and beat. That would have been infinitely playable
I’m on the fence about whether or not I should pick this game up. It looks kind of neat for only $30, but I don’t think it’s something I’d keep coming back to. What I really want is a new NES Remix.
I was kind of surprised that none of the games had the final boss as a challenge. Especially SMB3, which has Boom Boom and all of the Koopalings. It seems like such an obvious choice.
I just bought the game last night and S ranked every challenge from the start of Mario 1 to the end of Donkey Kong, so far what I've noticed is that it seems way easier to get an S rank on the Master and Legend challenges than it does on Normal and Hard challenges, and the difficulty the challenges are marked with aren't always a good indicator in my opinion. The legend challenge for Mario 1 is speedrunning the whole game, while in Zelda 1 you just have to beat the first dungeon, which isn't even hard because the preview movie before you begin gives you the fastest route through the dungeon anyways. I can only imagine the listed difficulty only pertains to actually clearing the challenge, cause you have to remember that Nintendo anticipates that people of all skill levels will be playing this game. The S rank grind probably wasn't high on their list of priorities I would imagine.
This game is 450mb, that’s unheard of for a new game. If they want to support this, they can easily do so. I’d love to see the multiplayer challenges playable as speedruns in single player. The Legendary Trial has so much potential if they take that idea and expand it. Multiple trials, new ones every week, custom trials, make your own and post them for others to beat your time. I am so hopelessly addicted to this game, it’s such a surprise hit for me, and all based on your Live then S rank video. I bought it right away and I had no intention to buy this and I haven’t been able to put it down 🤘🏻❤️
I can see this game working if some people decide to host a website where people would compete for the best times on all challenges and try to lower the collective total time like it's already done in communities for games with individual level scores/times. I'm thinking something like the communities do for Mario Kart 64, Perfect Dark, Goldeneye 007, Smash Melee (Home-run contest and Break the Targets), TimeSplitters 2, etc. The only major problem being that a lot of the challenges times will be maxed out really quickly and impossible to improve.
yeah good feedback! they very much made the beginning challenges just tutorial. would love newer harder challenges. even if they never do LIVE battles would love to see some ninji mode so everyone can battle for the WR globally that resets often with custom challenges!
I think live speed running with others is impossible to do in a fair way considering network latency and the need to determine wins down to the millisecond. But they could add it as a “fun mode” that doesn’t count towards your record.
0:56 mark, what is the "Legendary Trial" on the menu screen? Is this some sort of unlockable after you get A grades or higher on all of the levels in the game?
Don't get me wrong I understand what a lot of people are saying when they wanted a little bit more out of this game but here's two things One write you you play a lot of Mario Maker 2 expert levels so this game wasn't for you to begin with number one. Number two they're giving you the experience of what other people had to go through when playing the original world championships. Actually they're giving you more of an experience because they gave you exactly what they went through and the actual world championships you would have just got three games. This is one of the novelty games they put out for people to have in the collect because the actual real cartridges for NES or very collectible. Now I do hope they do update it with some new challenges but you got what they advertised I don't understand how you think it's underwhelming when they never advertised anything overwhelming.
I was pretty hyped for this coming out but am glad i didn't shell out for it in the end. IF they add more games / challenges / better multiplayer, I will possibru get it.
I think the game would do better if the challenges were segments of the actual any% speedrun (maybe just the best bits of various speedrun categories). It would be a gateway into actually speedrunning these games as well as a convenient way to practice, and the speedrun communities would contribute to its longevity.
This game feels like they intend to expand it over time. There is no way they released it where you can beat every single speedrun challenge in a day and earn every pin in a week
I'm just having fun challenging myself. I'm terrible at reaction based stuff and it's taking me longer than someone like you to get S ranks on everything. The brick breaking challenge and collect 30 coins in Mario 1, I just got after trying them countless times. One criticism I do have: the S rank requirements on many of these are so tight, I don't feel like there's any point in trying to get a better time cuz it feels impossible.
This game seems like a lazy, slapped together pile of crap with no quality control just for a cash grab from people like me who grew up in the 80s with these games. An embarrassing effort on Nintendo's part.
This is a troll.. A few short years ago something like this would have been looked at as a joke, but gamers have been dumbed so far down that picking a vegetable is a challenge now. You're being mocked.
The weekly challenges should be like the Legendary Challenge where you have to play multiple in one go. IT is so dumb to have weekly challenges that are VERY EASILY optimized to the point where pages and pages of the leaderboard are all ties. The Lengendary Challenge is sort of fun...but only for the first few tries. If they had a new set of say, 8 challenges every week, then it would be more interesting.
I think that conceptually they were on the right track, however, the game is about 6 years late! It really could have helped usher in new players (and old) to the online game library. They (Nintendo) could have then followed trends, plays and playtime, using that data for what games to "bring back" with modern twists and technologies.
It's like as if Nintendo is releasing games that aren't particularly anything specific that they said they're working on but still would pull in some cash without putting much work into it. Kind of like they're working on a new system and making sure there are decent releases ready for it
I have the same problem with this game that I had with NES Remix 2: it feels more like a collection of demos than a substantial game in its own right. I thought NES Remix 1 did a great job of adding structure, challenge, and variety to a lot of the early and simple NES games that really benefited from being spruced up. If it wasn't for the input lag, I'd go so far as to say that it's the definitive way to play a lot of those games. But in both NWC and NES Remix 2, I just feel like most of the interesting things these games have to offer are nowhere to be seen.
Totally understand your viewpoint on your review, but my son loves those simple / duplicate challenges. There aren't enough people like you or me to justify making the game, but when they expand it out to be appealing for a wider audience it justifies making the game.
Is this a demo? If so, how many games will the full version feature? More than 120? Will Faxanadu be included? What is the price? Will there be a physical?
There's a great opportunity for Nintendo to surprise everyone and release updates for this game. A periodic refresh of games and challenges would be enough to make this great. But, given their track record of not fulfilling the promise of games like this, I'm not holding my breath.
The fact that Punch Out wasnt here is criminal
The input lag makes the game impossible outside of CRT
@@MegaKoeyKue OK that makes sense. Ive tried playing through on NSO and it's much more difficult...now I see why!

Why though? You can literally just play the games themself and do that..
@@Syranovæ I cannot currently boot up Zelda 2 split screen on my switch and race my friends. I think that would be a cool thing to add.
@@jordanneal576 That sounds like something noone would ever actually use though.
@@Syranovæ I would. Can't speak for anyone else.
Agreed all around I think Nintendo should have just remade NES remix but with new features and full online play functionality.
NES Remix needs more love and being locked on the Wii U / 3DS is such a shame. It wasn't perfect, but it had such potential. The saddest part is how much DNA this shares with it... almost seems to be some of the same team. Makes me wish they ported Remix over alongside this.
NES REMIX has no multiplayer, thats sucks. This is way better
@@hector4470 Yea, I think that wouldve been much better.
@@animathias Yea, this had alot of potential.
The fact there's no real-time online killed any chance of me playing this
@@jordanvespa720bro I got scammed so hard I thought that it was live
i dont see why it needs to be "real time" you are racing yourself and probably safe to stay away from lag and you could see everyone going the luigi jump strategy to unlock the door..i still dont think this will hurt it
They already did NES remix on 3DS and Wii U, so they can make new challenges and stuff in these game’s engines. I’m not sure why they didn’t go with that direction plus the speed running aspect. That would have been so much more fun.
NES remix was meant to be as a new game with retro designs vs NES championship was meant to be as a NWC game.
Copyright on old titles is unaffected by new ones. You probably meant trademarks.
Thanks for saving me $40 bucks dude. I was also pumped for this. Hopefully they can tweak it a bit with updates. We shall see.
Excite bike is BIS. I loved that game. The creator mode...OMG.
Its a good game sure, but best in slot? Are u for real?
U really can't think of a single game better than excite bike?
Don't you know what a personal opinion is?@@andreaseriksson9225
@@andreaseriksson9225 Personally no. I ranked it above all other nes games. I created so many tracks! Blades on Steel also being another favorite of mine. Snes was Mario Paint and mk1, I am just that type person.
Did nobody in chat tell Ryu to grab the mushroom from the left?
Is that really faster? You need to turn around in any case and the mushroom moves to the right. So the way he does it, moving to intercept the mushroom, should be a shorter way to go.
@@ivan_pozdeev_u WR goes left and imo it's easier to S from left. You collect the mushroom before it moves horizontally.
@@ivan_pozdeev_uone RUclipsr went backwards after hitting the mushroom and finished with 3 seconds
I suffered the "up inputs" a lot and have resorted to using the joy-cons with the grip. I get no up mistakes using the joy-con"D-pad".
Maybe they’ll listen to us and do DLC for it, free updates and include things we should have gotten like being able to see leaderboards for all challenges, see where you rank in regular speedrun mode, play with others online and maybe add more games like contra and punch out
They needed a live online mode but can also fill out the games with ghost data if there isn't enough players
I went from looking into a Day one purchase to more of a "wait and see"
I'm glad I did. The game looks like it's going to need a lot of DLC love!
If Mario Party has showed us anything, there's no way they're gunna update it with more challenges
However, they should have made the timing for S-rank a bit tighter in order to necessitate using that trick
ryu channeling his inner avgn "What were they thinking??"
I hope there is DLC. I would agree that more challenges would be fun especially harder ones.
Ice Hockey would have been awesome
Blades of Steel!
ice hockey is such a good game
Win a game with only skinny guys lol
You have to consider that most of the Switch players are really young and are experiencing theses games for the first time. That's why there is some challenges that are really easy for experienced Nintendo players.
There is no justification f0r the countdown being 3 seconds but the gameplay is 2. Insane to defend this game.
You should call your game reviews "Ryu Reactions". Comes off the tongue nicely
Ryactions?
29:01 Poor Jarrod. He was smoked before the game even started. 😅
Imagine if this game allowed you full access to the games and the ability to create and post your own speed runs for others to try and beat. That would have been infinitely playable
I like Ice Climbers. Its just a bit tedious. Plus reaching the next level is quite something. As its a horizontal level, not a vertical climb.
Few games i would liked to see are: Punch out, Megaman 2, Rockin' Kats, Castlevania and Batman
The only major problem being that a lot of the challenges times will be maxed out really quickly and impossible to improve.
yeah good feedback! they very much made the beginning challenges just tutorial. would love newer harder challenges. even if they never do LIVE battles would love to see some ninji mode so everyone can battle for the WR globally that resets often with custom challenges!
this should’ve been a digital only “game”. maybe on switch exp pack and it gets constantly updated with new challenges and/or games every month.
I think live speed running with others is impossible to do in a fair way considering network latency and the need to determine wins down to the millisecond. But they could add it as a “fun mode” that doesn’t count towards your record.
I remember NES Remix for 3DS and Wii U, they had more games and were super tough!
0:56 mark, what is the "Legendary Trial" on the menu screen? Is this some sort of unlockable after you get A grades or higher on all of the levels in the game?
Yes
If they just added a mode to let you play the whole game speedrun it would be pretty satisfying. They have it for Super Mario 1 which is pretty cool
So... Super Mario Maker-ish idea where you set up your own challenges against the world? That is a massively overlooked idea, indeed.
You made a lot of good points. I’m hoping they add nes remix because they had some great challenges in that one
As a guy that's played Nintendo games back in 1986 and on I agree with everything said in this video!
Why aren't the games fully playable?
They are monogamy challenges, part of NWC. What do you expect?
I'm just having fun challenging myself. I'm terrible at reaction based stuff and it's taking me longer than someone like you to get S ranks on everything.
The brick breaking challenge and collect 30 coins in Mario 1, I just got after trying them countless times. One criticism I do have: the S rank requirements on many of these are so tight, I don't feel like there's any point in trying to get a better time cuz it feels impossible.
Ice climber was only ever fun 2-player, It's utter chaos! You should give it a try
See this is a challenge that you do one time man. Ryu does it more than once.
This game seems like a lazy, slapped together pile of crap with no quality control just for a cash grab from people like me who grew up in the 80s with these games. An embarrassing effort on Nintendo's part.
Unless you are a collector to invest in the long run
This strikes me as an 'NES Remix, hold the Remix'.
Could you check out the side scroller skull monkeys? Made of claymation in the 90s was so much fun and challenging
This has to be the best breakdown of this game I’ve have seen.
Nice job!
I’m having a blast playing this game but at same time scratching my head lol
This is a troll.. A few short years ago something like this would have been looked at as a joke, but gamers have been dumbed so far down that picking a vegetable is a challenge now. You're being mocked.
The weekly challenges should be like the Legendary Challenge where you have to play multiple in one go. IT is so dumb to have weekly challenges that are VERY EASILY optimized to the point where pages and pages of the leaderboard are all ties. The Lengendary Challenge is sort of fun...but only for the first few tries. If they had a new set of say, 8 challenges every week, then it would be more interesting.
I miss Zelda 2. Difficult game but I love the soundtrack and game in general.
Kind of like they're working on a new system and making sure there are decent releases ready for it
The game should ideally have had challenges based around pivotal parts of a speed run and then ended with a full speed run of the game
It would be cool if they release a Snes Edition. That would be sick
they most def will. it says NES edition on some screens. can't wait for some super metroid and mario kart and lttp and other mario games
I hope they do a snes version of this too!
Imagine Nintendo World Championships Maker with basic level building ability and online versus races like in SMM2…but it actually working
Bro , we need a full walkthrough of Demon's crest
That beginning part was hilarious
The poisen mushroom lvl is not present here in my norwegian version. wtf?!!
Can't really argue with you Ryu. Been fun watching you and Carl playthrough the game but to me it's like 10% of a game.
There's a great opportunity for Nintendo to surprise everyone and release updates for this game. A periodic refresh of games and challenges would be enough to make this great. But, given their track record of not fulfilling the promise of games like this, I'm not holding my breath.
