Thunderclap Newman - Something In The Air (1969)

  • A real powerhouse "soft rock" song with strikingly serious lyrics, along with one hell of a bouncy piano, was this result of a concept by The Who's Pete Townshend to create a
band and album featuring the creative work of drummer and singer Speedy Keen (who sings the lead vocal on this song). I was very surprised to find out "Something In The Air" only reached #37 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart on October 26, 1969. I remember this one very well and there was hardly a summer day that year this single was not played by the same station at least six times during the afternoon, let alone again that many times during the evening here in Western New York. Released in May 1969, by July it had quickly peaked at #1 in
    the UK for three weeks.

One of my all-time favourites from the '60s. That honky tonk piano solo is memorable. Accompanying visuals are, as usual with MMR, superb! Thanks Mike for keeping the music alive.

Thanks Ross! I had the piano in mind initially when I decided to make this video. I knew that part would be dance, which I have a good eye and musical ear for. But the more serious verses presented a problem, but I worked it out ... or so I believed. Compared with "On The Road Again" by Canned Heat and "Reach Out of the Darkness" by Friend & Lover, which have both taken off view-wise, this one should be also, but it is moving slow despite it being one of the best and most dynamic dance portions to a video I have ever done. The dance portion alone should be worth 'the price of admission.' I don't know what is wrong with the general YT audience.

Mike, awesome job as always. I particularly like the flappers dancing. It’s in perfect timing for the song.

Thanks so much! Loved putting that dance part together, a lot of my better videos use dance, and I DO synchronize them to the music as exact as possible. Been doing dance in my videos since I did Ray Charles "Hit The Road Jack" back in 2013.

My first time hearing this song was in the movie Almost Famous. Never heard it back in the day, weird. Good tune and good job, Mike. Hoping you’ll be feeling better soon.

Thanks for stopping by Steve, glad you liked the song and video! Yeah, the song was hard to miss around here, but maybe in some parts of the US it was different. After all, it only peaked at #37, I think on Cash Box it was worse, around #45. I always thought it at least made it to the Top Ten given all the play it got around here. Feeling better is still going to require several important tests and my guess is that I'll end up seeing a rheumatologist in the end because SOMETHING caused all this stuff to happen rather suddenly, including the B12 drop.

You're right, Mike. I recall hearing this song all summer long in '69.

Yeah, this was definitely one of them, also "Israelites" by Desmond Dekker.

Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed it! I hope things get better soon, yesterday I seemed a LOT better, but today, eh, not so hot. Not sure if I am over whatever this new problem is or not. Really run down.
