    Not owning either a PS1 or a Sega Saturn, Nightdive's port of PowerSlave was my first time experiencing PowerSlave in general. Me being a fan of 1990's shooters growing up with Doom, Quake, Dark Forces, Duke Nukem, GoldenEye, Half-Life, etcetera I was curious in playing the remastered versions of the classics including Blood: Fresh Supply, Shadow Warrior Classic Redux, and this upgraded gem in PowerSlave Exhumed. I've 100%ed the achievements in all three PowerSlave Exhumed, Shadow Warrior Classic Redux, and Blood: Fresh Supply. I love how PowerSlave with it's original 5th Gen console ports was Metroid Prime before Metroid Prime even existed. The lava snakes in level stages in Metroid Prime were clearly inspired by PowerSlave's enemies in the lava mantises. Nice video btw!

    This remaster really caught me off guard with how good it was. It isn't a straight port of *any* version of the game, but more of a greatest-hits style collection of the PS1, PC and Saturn versions. I also want to point out that digging into the video options, you can enable a lighting mode that's more accurate to the Saturn version; heck playing with the graphics options will even let you make the game look almost exactly like the Saturn version from top to bottom, including capping the FPS to 30, making the game run in 4:3, making the pixels look nice and chunky, and even enabling texture warping just for that nostalgic feeling.
    It really impressed me! There's so many more games I want Night Dive to remaster, especially after seeing how well this came out.

    • @evshrug
      @evshrug 2 года назад

      Does the graphic option include the blue projectile glow of the Saturn, instead of the almost-white glow shown throughout the video here?

    So this game is basically Duke Nukem 3D with Metroid-style exploration? I used to own the Saturn version a LONG time ago, but I never got far into it and at the time, I assumed it was another run of the mill FPS. Boy, was I wrong! • @markmeadows7093

      I think it was tricky because of the multiple processors. They all ran on the same bus except the sound processor. This would cause pipeline stalls if it wasn’t balanced just right. I don’t see why though. Those chips have cache on them for a reason.

    • @admiralAlfonso9001
      @admiralAlfonso9001 9 месяцев назад

      @@markmeadows7093also apparently American developers got poorly translated manuals early on to develop for the system. plus game development was shifting over to using C, and although Saturn could have games made in C (and that’s what American developers mostly used) assembly was what achieved the best results.

      If you put yourself in the mind of Doom (and Doom64, a contemporary game), and even Goldeneye's single player campaign, Powerslave will blow you away. Yeah, Goldeneye had cool music and everything was in polygons, but I felt like the Sprite enemies of Powerslave were more detailed and interesting, certainly more variety. Another sweet FPS from around this time was the Macintosh-exclusive Marathon series... which you can play on modern PC's and Macs thanks to the developer (Bungie!!) making the game a free license plus the Aleph One open source engine. Play Powerslave for the First-Person Metroid feel and sound design, Dark Forces to see what Star Wars is like for non-jedi, and Marathon for the story.

Some levels you die many times but want to come back and try again. This game became one of my favorite shooters. Duke 3D on Saturn was a thing of beauty and a game I actually felt compelled to complete (and did) in short order between college classes and skipping classes. In high school we blamed the PC Duke in Deathmatch as the teacher never bothered to check! To my delight, when alternately popping in the Saturn version, it played exactly the same (to me), and my eyeballs hadn’t ingrained any differences graphically that I ever nit-picked. This looks like a winner!

    • @evshrug
      @evshrug 2 года назад +1

      What does the CRT filter do, just add black interlaced lines? I don’t know if you ever played the SW: Rebel Assault games, but they included an “interlaced” option to improve performance, basically only processing half the vertical resolution and then stretching the image back to normal proportions by inserting black lines. So far, all the “CRT filters” I’ve seen just look like that, not how I actually remember seeing things on CRT monitors.
      They did 3D models for the Marathon series… but I preferred the sprites for some reason. The polygon models changed the look too much, like early PC Polygon characters instead of the hand-drawn feeling of the sprite pixels.

      They came the closest to harnessing the Saturn's full potential. Sadly, they hated the machine with a passion. Regardless, their three masterpieces are among my favorites in my Saturn collection :)

      @@AtariBorn if they hated it, they had a funny way of showing it, because their games are some of the very best in 3D FPS for the system. Only time and passion would deliver such excellent gaming experiences.

      @@MaidenHell1977 They were good at what they did. That's not disputed. But they have made it clear the machine was a nightmare. I'm not trashing the Saturn. It's my all time favorite classic console but the devs at Lobotomy were very outspoken of their distaste for it's convoluted architecture. They were geniuses when it came to tricks and circumventing the Saturn's flaws but it did cost them in the long run.

    Shining the Holy Ark is still the best dungeon crawler ever created, the attention to detail in that game is amazing.
    Now a days in Dungeon crawlers, wen you select Attack, you just see a slash on screen and a number( damage) that's it, on this game, you actually see trough the eyes of the main character, meaning wen you Attack your character goes there in First person and Attacks.
    Wen anyone from your party attacks, you actually see them going forward and conjuring the spell, also critical hits on this game are CRITICAL hits, instead of just a higher damage number, your character and your party do different Attacks.
    For example: Basso a Dragon warrior who looks like a dragon, wen he critical hits, he does a Shoulder charge, or a Fire breath attack, or an Ice breath attack or a Fire and Ice Breath attack.
    Rodi For example, a Ninja, wen he Crits, he throws a HUGE shuriken, or you see him dash forward, grab an enemy, jumping outside the screen in the air and slamming him down.
    It was beautiful, and remember this are just normal Attack commands, but if it was a crit you would see something amazing, and every character had a lot of deferent Crits.
    Shining the holy Ark, Dragon force, Guardian heroes, Final Fantasy 7 and The Witcher 3 are my 5 favorite games of all time, 3 of them are on the Sega Saturn.

    Ion Fury (originally Ion Maiden) was inspired in part by Iron Maiden. This game is the one that should have Maiden playing in the background- "Tell me why I had to be a Powerslave..."
    I tried this not long ago (I don't remember which version) but didn't get far. Might have to pick it up again.

    I loved the game and played the hell out of it when it was initially released on the Saturn. It raised the bar of what was possible on the Saturn at the time. I never completed it though, I found it too frustrating having to go back to the same areas so many times. (And dying too many times in the process, lol)

    What can you say about the level design of this remaster, SLX? Does it resemble more the Saturn version than the PlayStation one? Thanks in advance!

    Amazing review as always SLX, keep these videos coming for remakes of old games, and have a great rest of ur day.

    I was one of the lucky "few" that had a pc back in the day of all the shareware. The amount of random FPS games was ridiculous around the time Doom 1 came out. This takes me back

      I had a a demo disk that came with the Packard Bell PC that I had. It had a demo of Chasm on it. As a teen I didn't realise how janky it was and played that demo to death. That, Doom and Descent were unlike anything I had ever experienced and I was blown away. And then when Quake came out, man that blew my mind.

      Yeaaaaah shareware and demos, so awesome. I played HOURS of Escape Velocity shareware (and eventually bought the third game… wish I had bought all three, RIP Ambrosia SW), loved my precious Dreamcast demo discs, and there indeed were just so many super random games in shareware in the 90’s.
      It’s interesting to see some of the shareware game concepts show up again in shallow/lame Freemium mobile games, like the stupid fishdom game that is yet another match-3 game at its core but the ad shows only a mini game where you swim/dodge bigger fish and eat smaller fish to grow inside… I played a whole game that was just that Mini-game, and I’ll always associate that game with “Lovefool” by the cardigans because the fish would bob up-and-down in time to the beat 😂

    In my opinion, keeping the 2D sprites was a good decision. Otherwise, they would have to completely rework the textures and geometry of the space to make the graphics consistent. It looks more like a Saturn emulator on steroids. Even wall textures are unfiltered to better blend with sprites. Apart from FPS, I still prefer the Sega Saturn look, which is more coherent, but I think some smart compromises were made here, with respect for the source material.

    I think this really needs an option for the original vertical pixel resolution while keeping the wide-screen. The chonky pixels were part of the look, and the textures are still chonky.
    That, and the original lighting, and then we're good to go here.

    I could definitely get behind these types of remasters and I would love to see a rerelease of Panzer Dragoon Saga. I got my first Saturn a few months ago and I bought a copy of Panzer Dragoon Saga and being able to play the game without having to have deep pockets would be great.
