Typical Marxist - everything’s a crisis and needs a ‘revolution’ so that you can ‘fix it’ - in line with your own views of course and no doubt rewarding you with special privileges because you were so clever
Don't you think the lack of things to be proud of might be down to being told it's a "sin" to be proud of your country. When you lose pride in yourself you allow yourself and your home to fall into slobbery. No surprise when you lose pride in your community and country it falls into decline.
Being proud is normally something reserved for something achieved, a tought task/experience completed. One cannot be proud of randomly being born somewhere. You can be happy being born in the UK, or born in Sweden, but you cannot be proud. Too much pride around as it is, and you know what comes after. Feeling pride in something one cannot be proud of, is just another intellectual slip and makes people dummer in general.
Sorry...but I disagree. I am proud of my ancestors achievements... and that is a valid feeling. I am proud to be Canadian ... and my birth here was by luck, not choice or accomplishment. 🤷♀️ Have yourself a great day!😊
A US comic said why be proud of your nation? It was an accident of birth and your mother put in all the hard work. You might as well be proud of having colon cancer . That was an accident of birth and the colon is putting in all the hard work..
I'm not proud of much. But as Oscar Wilde said, "Patriotism is the virtue of the vicious". We shouldn't gives such love and devotion to this small spit of land on the basis that we were lucky enough to be born here. I'm proud of the people that try to improve the lives of others, not a country that votes for bigots
The problem is, without a sense of belonging people don't try to improve the lives of others. Why would they? Other people simply become a threat - competition for resources.
Being proud of a nation is not an evil or a negative concept. Having pride in your nations’ past and the virtues it stands for means you are more likely to defend them from others who would like to take them away. When the people lose their care for a nation they lose the nation.

This guy couldn’t name one thing he was proud of when it came to being British. It’s sad really. He finally landed on the NHS, which as he’s obviously a Tory, he probably wants to do away with anyway. I could tell you loads of things that make me proud of being British, but almost every one of those things would have me pigeonholed as some woke lefty. You know full well that JoB wouldn’t grill a someone in such a tone if they said they were proud to be black, or proud to be Caribbean let’s say. Think about it - do you think that would happen? And let’s say, a black man said to you that he was proud to be black - would you grill him in this tone as to why. I highly doubt that. And I’m not sure why you think *any* black person can list 10 things on the spot. Do you think people carry a card with notes or something? And yes I watched the video. I'm proud of Britain for the times it has stood for something better. When we have set the standard. You know, things like fighting the Nazis. Taking in refugees from countries that would otherwise have murdered them. Things like being the instigator and key nation in the formation of the European court of human rights. Having a health system that WAS the envy of the world. Having an education system such that degrees from UK universities were seen as the highest standard across the world. I am not proud of the constant stream of ignorance, bigotry, general hatred and idiocy that passes for British culture a lot of the time. It used to be that we would look at groups like the national front, or Mosleys blackshirts, and they would be clearly something that was against the British way of life. Now we give them airtime, and offer them equal position in debate, where they in no way deserve it or have earned it. Much of the best of British achievement has come from immigrants, refugees and people who would anywhere else be downtrodden and hated. Surely we should be helping people up, not kicking them down?
I understand that things haven't been going well for you guys recently but getting an education from a British university is still seen as the highest standard across the world. People view degrees from Britain in a much more positive and prestigious light than degrees from other countries. There are tens of thousands of students from across the word that flock to your universities and colleges to get an education.
@gabrieldsouza6541 I am starting to question why people still go to Oxford though. We have had Oxford graduates running the country, and look what a mess they made of it! Totally agree that we are at lur best when we're sharing and working with others though 🙂
It's politics. Your leaders are failing because British voters simply don't have the level of civic participation needed to hold them to account. That isn't the fault of Oxford, it's the fault of the entire British public. Take energy subsidies for example. Common economic sense would tell you that subsidizing household energy bills is a really bad idea, because not only is it wildly expensive at a time when interest rates are very high, it also doesn't encourage households to use less energy. If anything, it encourages more energy use, because bills aren't prohibitively expensive for the richest households. But, subsidies are what the British public wanted, so that's what they got. @@markwelch3564

You don’t have to describe it because you just know. Why not ask an Italian what being an Italian is or a German or an Australian? Why do we recognise those as distinct cultures? BECAUSE THEY ARE DIFFERENT FROM OURS
English culture of course changes over time but as the same as most cultures it is derived from its people, the English and, amongst other things, their language, art, music, literature, folklore, science, food, architecture, political institutions, sporting events, and national pastimes, such as slagging off the country you’re born into.
Why are people expected to not question the way things are run in their country? Why should people have a blind loyalty? How can we ever improve if we are unable to address genuine issue? Its not "slagging off", it is voicing a political view.
Do you support everyone that wants to give voice to a political view (if so, then I applaud you). Or do you want people you agree with to voice their political view and those you disagree with to be censored and silenced?
@@paulroberts7544 I believe everyone is entitled to their own view. However, I believe if you're knowingly spreading views based off disinformation then this prevents the fairness of politics existing. So it doesn't matter if Bob the builder does this because they don't have a platform to abuse, they can say whatever and exist on the fringe if they see fit. But high ranking politicians and figures, who know the full story, purposely exaggerate truths for personal gain and I think this abuse should not only be banned in politics but there should actually be criminal repercussions for using the freedoms of this country against itself. I believe we make topics such as migration simplified and people are allowed to make sweeping statements which is then justified by the entitlement of being able to say whatever. We must preserve the right to free speech, and that includes questioning people who publicly abuse that right. Otherwise that right becomes meaningless and will cease to exist and it'll be too late when people realise this. I don't think this is something unique to either the left or right, its a disease within modern politics.

No, it’s not a straw man. If somebody is proud of their nationality, it doesn’t require being grilled by James O’Brien in a patronising manner to explain why. you claim that in the 90s you got 240 quid in cash working in a chippy ? and as for olympic champions you must've been asleep for thge last 25 years .... i'd love to know which year of the 90s that was
So £240 x 52 = £12,480pa gross, £12,480 Net as you shirked Tax and NI to wrap chips in a chip shop. That's something to be proud of while almost everyone else was paying their fair dues. And I bet you nothing to show for it either.

English culture of course changes over time but as the same as most cultures it is derived from its people, the English and, amongst other things, their language, art, music, literature, folklore, science, food, architecture, political institutions, sporting events, and national pastimes, such as slagging off the country you’re born into.
"Patriotism is a virtue of the vicious" - Oscar Wild
How did this call go from 1-10?

Is the point here that we shouldn't be proud of our country? If you have no pride in something you don't look after it. Look what a cess pit modern life in Britain is. We need people that care.
I think indian and british cultures are very well matched, class driven, not so much the antipodes.
James hates this country. Perhaps he should leave if he despises it so much. People might not be able to articulate as well as him. Doesn’t make him right.
When people like James are able to get radio show it makes me ashamed to be British.
Well said
Also WOW someone phoned in, normally 3hrs of him just waffling fake outrage and those piggy eyes.
I'm proud to be British, but for me it's about how this relatively small island has punched well above its weight on the world stage in just about every area of human endeavour that you can think of, such as language, law, literature, music, science, and many others. We come from a heritage of uncommonly clever and successful imagineers and go-getters. That's reason to be proud.
You forgot centuries of looting, slavery and killings. Aren´t you proud of that ?
Yes it did...
Hmmmm..
Language - Empire
Law - Empire
Literature - Yes, but how much French, German, Cantonese, Irish, etc etc literature have you read?
We are not uncommonly clever.
We are commonly clever. (Unless you're Jewish)
Punching above our weight in military endeavor, zeal and brutality?
Yes.
Hence, most of the rest.
You can be proud of your past but the future is looking very bleak indeed..

Hilarious! Rangerovers and Land rovers are some of the least reliable vehicles on the market, ask any AA person!
"you can't say you're proud of all the fairness when there isn't any"😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😅
True brexit has proven that
One's nationality is just a personal characteristic, similar to things like being LGBT+. So if one could be part of the Pride movement because of one's personal characteristics, why not with one's nationality?
Are you pretending to be this confused?
I'm proud of James, but then I'm not British.. 😅
I'm not - and I am British! Different strokes for different folks
If you’re not British it’s none of your effing business
@@mogznwazoh yes it is mate, as I pay more taxes than you can imagine and I'm here to stay 😅
Canadian viewer and fan of Mr. O'Brien. You should be proud to be British. Bertrand Russell, Adam Smith, David Hume, Disraeli, Gladstone, Cromwell, John Stuart Mill, PM Atlee, Al Murray, Frankie Boyle, Newton, Have I got news for You, The British Pub and its culture, and Parliament.
I add James' program to the list because constructive political criticism is a British tradition.
Industrial revolution too. One of the most significant events in history.
I'm not proud to be British because of these things. I appreciate that these things came from here.
CROMWELL ? You should run that by the Irish before you mention that one in public.
@@markr8326 There wouldn't be a Parliament without Cromwell.
Or a partitioned Ireland with 800 yrs of colonial war & atrocities. @@colinthompson3111
@@markr8326Cromwell was a mixed bag to say the least. But his opposition to the concept of the divinity of a king was a big step forward for European culture and thought. But his wars in Ireland and strict Puritanism not so much.
Is this guy's sole purpose just to interrupt every sentence so he can never get an answer to the questions he says need answering?
Ricky Gervais in a stand up said "let's stop asking the ordinary people" when I listen to this, I agree with with him. We had a referendum in the UK on whether we should leave the EU, and guess what, the ordinary people like this LBC caller, had their say.
I have lived in the USA for 23 years. I am proud of British comedy, British ale and our education system (educated in the 80's). Oh, and PM question time. If the USA had the commons and PM question time, Trump could NEVER have been entertained as a serious human being.
You cannot compare political systems.
Fairness? Equality? Really? Since when have the British been fair and equal! Sorry, I see no evidence of Britain being "fair" or "equal" either present or past! Then again, I'm Irish.... maybe I can't see things as an outsider that those next door probably can but please, could someone explain to me where these notions of fairness and equality come from?
I was born here therefore I'm proud of my country- every nationalist ever
RACE is an ILLUSION....
there are NO COUNTRIES....NO MARKINGS on the floor marking one country next to another.... there is ONE WORLD....

you are of the HUMAN RACE, or you are OTHER....
And we need system to keep it in check.
Birmingham Council bankrupted, EU rejecting Starmer and Sadiq’s broken London with many boroughs suffering from knife crime . What should we do James?
As an American I would expect a Brit to be proud of the war effort in WW2. Or maybe all the Nobel prizes in science or just all the science breakthroughs in general.
we havent had a lot to be proud of since tho. im actually proud of the NHS as it was a huge achievement, but its been run into the ground with 13 years of hard right gov.
I'm British by birth, not by achievement, so for me to be proud to be British is an oxymoron. However, I'm happy to be British!
The caller was genuinely a nice guy, you can hear the warmth in his voice - he rang up to talk to James O'Brian and his voice was heard nationally. However you feel about his reasoning, the fact that this was a warmhearted conversation is a reason to be proud to be British.
Absolutely, because warm hearted conversations never happen in other countries.
@@meredithhunter6419 Wow! That's some leap there. You can insert any country in place of 'British' and the sentiment remains the same. Just so long as there's tolerance for differing opinions.
The chap was a second generation immigrant trying to be positive about his adopted country but tosspot O Brien just threw a bucket of cold water over him.
FYI, the definitions of pride/proud: "feeling deep pleasure or satisfaction as a result of one's own achievements, qualities, or possessions or those of someone with whom one is closely associated."
Or
"having or showing a high or excessively high opinion of oneself or one's importance."
I think the caller is probably showing the second definition of pride more than the first.
Its an odd thing to be proud of something you had no involvement or control in.
I’m Caucasian, in my 60s and born in England. Can’t say that I’m that proud to be British though. The country has turned into a sewer in the last 13 years.
....what's your colour got to do with anything...?...and have you checked your drains...😊
@@chatham43being Caucasian here obviously means you won't grow up inherently having to deal with bigots.
@@chatham43 well had you been paying attention to the context of the video it was discussing a survey of black people. My point is that because I don’t happen to be black I haven’t been subject to racial abuse, prejudice or bigotry. But I have witnessed it with colleagues and acquaintances. I can understand why many don’t feel proud to be British, whatever their race, creed, orientation or beliefs. The incumbent government have broken this country and have been instrumental in increasing intolerance and inequality.
As others have mentioned, it’s more important to be proud of achievements or things within your control rather than something that you can’t control.
Then you were in a coma prior to 2010.
Thanks to globalised corporatism, Marxism, mass immigration and multiculturalism
The caller is right to be proud to be British, stoicism & apathy are great qualities.
Maybe some of those callers including James should sample life abroad and then come back and see how Britain is respected for its fairness, history, culture and its democracy.
See JOB was proud of being in the EU 🤣🤣🤣😍
I'm proud of our food, our "britishness", our societal politeness, our queue forming, our tea-drinking, our music, and our humour. I'm proud of our monuments such as Stonehenge and our historical castles, our stories steeped in myths. I could go on, really.
Youre proud of drinking tea?
Yeah, it's a Great British pastime lol. I'll grant you, how we got the tea in the first place probably isn't something to be proud of, though@@lasselippert3892
Your food!!?????
YES!
Proud of your food? Your politeness? Really? I think that point about myths is correct
Does this bloke ever say anything positive?
James O’Brien (Irish name) no wonder you aren’t proud to be British.
I’ll tell you what we have to be proud of, defeating the Germans in 2 wars, British stoicism, a country that is economically better off than 90% of the planet, we have humanitarian laws and rights, we have more equality than other countries in the world, British people are inherently not rude like the French or Americans, and finally all of our inventors and inventions.
PROUD TO BE BRITISH !!
Arran is basically an Irish name too.
