As a professional editor, grammar in fiction is NOT the same as grammar is the rhetoric non-fiction style taught in English classes. That is why we use Chicago Manual and why every editor and/or publisher has their own style guide.
So an English teacher might cringe, but those with English degrees that focus on writing, they understand.
