    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Dear friends and followers!
    In this video I´ll explain how you become an airline captain!!!
    Now let´s imagine you´ve been flying for an airline for quite some time , you´ve gained 4000 - 5000 flying hours over the past 7 - 8 years. You´ve not only profited from your flight experience, you´ve also gained seniority over the years which is a crucial part in becoming a captain.
    Now your airline makes an announcement for a so called „Captains upgrading“. There can be many reasons why the airline is in need of new captains, older captains might have retired or left the company for other reasons, or the company is an overall growth, more planes need more pilots.
    So you apply for the captains upgrade if you´re one of the copilots with a higher seniority. Sooner or later the department of flight training will set you up for the PICUS program. Pilot in command under supervision program. Meaning you as a copilot act as captain from the right hand seat. You´ll be the pilot in command, full filling captain duties, like passengers announcements, dealing with situations with ground handling, taxiing to the runway and much more.
    The amount of PICUS hours vary for many different reasons, for example in which country you´re flying, flight regulation authorities, aircraft type, previous gained hours etc.

      Great Video! Apologies for butting in, I would love your thoughts. Have you researched - Rozardner Flying Bird Reality (google it)? It is a good one off product for how to get pilot license without the normal expense. Ive heard some amazing things about it and my mate finally got cool success with it.

    • @nestorlazaro
      @nestorlazaro 7 лет назад +8

      Hi Joe, I don't know where to write this question. So I know that a commercial plane can fly for a couple minutes with 1 or 0 engines, but is there anything that a pilot can do if 1 engine fails during the first moments of taking off? Thank you for sharing with us such an amazing profession!

    • @Siatkowkarzadzi
      @Siatkowkarzadzi 7 лет назад +11

      Every airplane is desgined to fly on at least half of engines working. So in 2-engine aircraft you can still fly on one engine. If engine fails before V1 you would abort takeoff but if it happenes after V1 you should continue. Then you climb at V2 speed. Of course flight performance is severly affected, however you can still keep flying (as mentioned even climb), make it back to the runway and land safely

    Great presentation! Passed through that, but in military aviation. Although to unfamiliar looks like a mountain to climb, actually most of the stuff are already known from been a copilot. You know the aircraft you're flying, you know the airline procedures, because you are part of these, and you execute them every day. The major difference is that now being a captain you have to make decisions on any situation. That's the extra load that a captain is carrying. Which, again, is not something unfamiliar to an experienced co-pilot, because as a copilot you are the captains "consultant" on any situation, and have seen how captains react.
    Again...Congrats Joe!

      There's no reason to use FSX over Prepar3d unless you have addons that don't work in Prepar3d and you can't do without them. Technically you're not supposed to buy it for casual flight simming, but I really doubt Lockheed cares enough to go after anyone for doing that.

    When I was at school, I always dreamed of becoming an airline pilot and this is what I set my heart on. Then as I was about to leave school at 18 years old I caught an infection and was later diagnosed that I had developed type 1 diabetes. The infection had triggered the onset of diabetes. Hi Joe, I have a question. On the Internet, especially here on RUclips, there is a lot of information about what goes on before a flight. The plight plan, the briefing, the pre-flight inspection, etc... But what happens after the plane got to destination, and the engines are shut off? Are there procedures to do on the plane to "correctly switch it off"? Is there a de-briefing with the crew? Is there a report log to write down for the company? Thanks for your videos. I love them. Bye.

      Mostly paperwork - filling in times when waypoints are reached, fuel calculations to make sure that you're burning what the systems think you should (in case of a leak/very strong unforcast headwind etc) and preparing radios for atc handovers. I guess still quite boring but you can always look out of the office window to relieve that boredom! I'm not a pilot but "in the know"

    hi captain.. if a person who is already a captain in smaller aircraft such as 737 and then be promoted to 747 or larger aircraft.. do they still hold the captain rank or be downgrade to co-pilot rank before completing necessary type rating course of the aircraft and become a captain.. from my view.. i always see mature age pilot still hold 3 stripes on larger aircraft.. that makes me curios.. thanks

    • @kornkixassman4645
      @kornkixassman4645 6 лет назад +1

      eros actually it depends on airlines and company. Most airline are promoting senior fo in wide body aircraft to became captain for a smaller aircraft. It depends on how small the fleet the airline has. Let say senior fo in b777 will be promoted to became captain on b737 after accumulate a certain flying hrs. Some airline in the west are promoting from right to left hand seat. Example he started as fo on b737 then become capt b737. After that become co pilot on b777 and then promoted to capt b777. Some cases if you see some old fo he might be joined the industries quite late of his age. May be he just started flying at the age of 30 plus.

      Big V Sense of humor? It's as dull as kids in afrika and darude sandstorm. I really hate the smartassing nonsense of greeting random persons scrolling through comments.

      ERM, nope - that's as dull as you - darude that is. also those kids starving in Africa are like that because the Western world have fucked them up - 30,000 die EVERY day! Please use more appropriate analogies please!

    At Transavia (Netherlands) there's just a list. How earlier you got your job, the earlier you become a captain. So if there are 300 co-pilots who got there job before you, you'll have to wait for a couple of years. It's not based on skills and flight hours. It varies from airline to airline.

      No, once a week, but next year maybe twice a week. Getting a video ready costs me one entire day! Greetings Joe

    can a fighter pilot fly an airliner?

    • @PilotEngineer
      @PilotEngineer 7 лет назад +3

      After training of course. If you mean some emergancy situation, I think fighter pilot can land aircraft safely with instructions of Type Rated pilot because every fighter pilot knows the basics of flight and navigation

      Pilot Engineer
      What do you think, do fighter pilots have certain advantages when they become airline pilots comparing to pilots with only civil flying experience?

    • @tadicbb
      @tadicbb 7 лет назад

      yes exactly. and what is that advantages?

    • @institorisinstitoris959
      @institorisinstitoris959 7 лет назад

      I don't know, maybe better understanding what plane can do or feeling more relaxed in stressful situations... just guessing...

    • @WhiteKestrell
      @WhiteKestrell 7 лет назад +2

      Yes. The Military will fund the PPL, Instruments Rating, VFR and IFR so you more or less need only a CPL and Hours on Types, I think? There were many ex-airforce officers who joined airlines that way. It is said to be an easier way than doing it on your own.

    Flight crew and px's grow very weary on long hauls. I want to start an airline where every 2 hours some high energy music fills the cabin and the Capt performs some basic aerobatic maneuvers, such as wing rocking dutch rolls and full rolls with combinations. I would definitely book on an airline like that. Some low level terrain following through gorges and mountains would definitely spice things up also. We got to bring some fun back into flying.

    Well, at your airline the current batch of upgrades do not go through a PICUS program, get only 9 simulator sessions including final check and zero flight time training, and only after that start with a five day theoretical course. No assessment or checking is done before entering the upgrade process. LIFUS is sequenced in four phases: zero flight time landings (first four sectors), LIFUS with LTC only, progression check, LIFUS with a normal FO and final line check. All in all 100 block hours, or about two to three months.
