  • Is AI really that powerful now?
A new trend has popped up around the use of ChatGPT a new AI conversational/research tool. Believe me I was shocked with its capabilities, so it dawned on me.
Can it be so good it can write your thesis, well at least a good part of it. I break down this very idea in this video!

I used chatgpt in my PhD thesis to like put my notes and bullet points into coherent academic text...this way, I was able to like write my methods chapter in a single day! I mean, obviously, this is just a rough draft and I'll have to refine it and stuff...but hey, a first rough draft in a day...that's not too bad, is it?😁

      What about plagiarism?

Why would you risk this, all it takes is for your professor to put that text into numerous GPT detectors that are only getting better at detecting this generated text, and you're in deep shit. Or worst yet the external examiner, imagine the humiliation on viva. This GPT things can help a lot, but letting them write your thesis (or parts of it) is academic suicide.

ChatGPT is essentially supposed to help as a personal assistant and brainstorming. Can't expectto do everything.

    Hello Aamir! Loved the video
I want to ask If an individual intends to publish a paper in a journal, would it be problematic if they detect AI-generated content? I am not referring to plagiarism, but rather if someone wishes to correct the written paragraphs for grammar and syntax. I am wondering if this would be an issue in the publishing process.

      Hi Umaira,
Thank you so much! Really glad you liked it.
In terms of AI-generated content I don’t think it will be be flagged up as there is still no standardise ruling on where AI stands as a source. Many people have actually put chatGPT as an author. So if you use AI then modify the text to suit your style (which most people do) I think that is ok. Perhaps the issues arises when entire pages of AI generated content is just copied and pasted as is.
      I hope that helps :)

First off, it's not a thesis it's a dissertation. Second, if all you're looking for are some letters at the end of your name, then you're missing the entire point of doing the research which is to learn and create knowledge. Third, you have to do a survey or something in the dissertation so at some point you actually have to do the work. Fourth, even if you manage to do all of that with Chat GPT and somehow not plagiarize, I doubt you would defend it very well. You'll need to explain how you went about your research, your synthesis, your survey, etc. And then after all of that if you somehow fake your way through the defense, yeah maybe you'll get away with it, but inside you'll always know you're a fraud.
