WHY A Passenger Must Pull on the Mask | Airline Pilot Explains

  • The oxygen masks inside of an airplane doesn't pull oxygen from a big oxygen tank on the aircraft, its actually created from chemicals. In this video, I talk about how those chemicals are activated and why you don't have an oxygen tank like the airline pilots use on the flight deck.

    I'm one of those (few) passengers who watch the flight attendants when they demonstrate how to use oxygen masks. Mostly cuz I don't want them to feel bad that no one else is paying attention--LOL. However, not until now did I realize the importance of "the tug" to start the flow of oxygen. Guess I wasn't paying as much attention as I thought! Thanks, Kelsey!

    A little aviation “trivia”. The 1996 ValuJet crash in the Everglades, was found to be caused mostly by improperly packaged plane oxygen generators in the cargo hold. They were expired and the company was transporting them. I placed the quotation marks on trivia because 110 people died and I’m sure to the families is not trivial.

    On a lot of wide-body aircraft types like the B777, they DO actually use a large collection of compressed O2 cylinder tanks, stored behind the linings in the cargo area, for passenger emergency oxygen. The pressure can be displayed in the flight deck, and the tanks can be filled up by maintenance. On some airlines they just have to be replaced.

    Hi Kelsey. While it is true some planes may have a few oxygen generators for the passengers, 747-8 have oxygen bottles for the passengers just like the crew. The 747-8 has a minimum of 5 passenger bottles in the fwd cargo sidewall and can have as many as 18 in the ceiling of the forward cargo. We also have very strict leakage rates, NO LEAKS ALLOWED! Check out chapter 35 in the Aircraft Maintenance Manual (AMM).

    I think the engineers designed "fake Oxygen" not only because tanks would be heavy, leaking etc. but also because pure oxygen (O2) is an extremely flammable gas so it would be like carrying on board a bomb waiting to explode.The chemical reaction to produce Oxygen would minimize that risk and would make Oxygen available only when it's needed.

    RUclips comment section engineer here. Another added benefit of chemical vs gaseous 02 is that it can function independently from any electrical systems in the plane. In any sort of catastrophic failure it is it's own system that works independently from the plane. Unfortunately this reaction is literally ripping off atoms from each other (mainly hydrogen from oxygen in hydrogen peroxide due to it's abundance of 02 and easability/cost effectiveness to make) so it's going to basically generate heat no matter what.

    Love your vids Kelsey! I'm a huge fan. I learned a lot from this one. I always thought that there was a master oxygen tank on planes that got topped off on a regular basis. Interesting to know that for cost, maintenance, and weight reasons there are chem packs that generate O2 throughout the plane. Personally I don't have a problem breathing 'fake' O2 so I can live long enough for you to get the plane down to 15-10k denser air that I can breathe without having to rely on the fake stuff.
    I did nearly blow coffee through my nose when you mentioned 'wearing your own oxygen tank' a few times. I'm a scuba diver, long distance sailor, and occasionally a pilot when friends let me hold the stick on their planes during straight and level flight conditions. The image I pictured of you wearing a scuba rig while piloting an aircraft was hilarious!
    I love the underlying principle I feel from your videos of making a few mistakes and using them to learn and grow from. Pretty much the only way I know of to become highly competant at difficult, critical, and important tasks. God knows I wouldn't even be close to having the confidence to cross the Atlantic solo to my family and roots in Germany in a 50yo 26' boat next spring if I didn't learn and survive a few tough lessons along the way.
    Keep on doing what you do so well! Love the fact that you're learning to have some personal fun with the Cirrus. Looking forward to seeing and hearing more about that. Hope you had a chance to head north from Santa Monica over Malibu and possibly as far up that magnificent coastline to Santa Barbara. I used to surf and fly that stretch of coastline in fix wing Schweizer gliders as a teenager.
    Good times in great digs! Keep on keep'n on Kelsey!

    These oxygen generators are actually what caused the crash of ValuJet flight 592 in Florida. Their cargo was labeled "used oxygen containers." When in fact, what they had on board were expired oxygen generators. A few of them were activated in the cargo hold. When these activate they generate a tremendous amount of heat. It started a fire and filled the cabin with smoke.

    This should replace the standard FA announcement about the masks. I've only flown a few times, but don't recall any emphasis put on the importance of pulling on the strap to activate it. I feel that could lead a lot of people to unknowingly misuse it and not activate it. They also didn't mention anything about the cheat, odor, and smoke potential, which can confuse and panic passengers even more.

    I would guess the chemically generated oxygen is also chosen, because either small tanks or large tanks with oxygen-lines are also a firehazard in case of leaks. Marine engineer worked as technical chief of a hospital here, so O2 leaks, as well as NO2 leaks were always a concern in the distributing pipesystem. Elevated O2 levels in close proximity to electrical systems are always a risk, though not likely a big risk. There would have to be an electrical fault as well, or open circuit that generate a spark.

    Plenty of aircraft fly around with oxygen tanks for the passengers. These oxygen tanks are (in case of a 777) in the aft cargo compartment behind the sidewalls. These are routed to the passengers with tubes. Accessibility to these tanks is good. The sidewall liners are closed with pushbuttons. This makes it very easy to check the pressure. If the pressure is too low they are not refilled but replaced. Its a simple task that takes less than 10 minutes per tank. You do have to be carefull when working with oxygen because it can ignite if it comes into contact with oil or grease. If a aircraft has oxygen tanks for passengers, it is seperate from the oxygen system for the pilots. Also, when those masks come down, and they get pulled, its ALOT less effort to replace 8 oxygen tanks than to replace 100+ oxygen generaters.

    Hey Kelsey, will you tell your FAs not to worry so much about their hair and makeup when they do their O2 mask demo before takeoff? They usually hold the mask away from their face and the elastic away from the back of their heads, as the correct way of donning the mask, and I've heard that some (less intelligent) passengers were led to believe that that was the posture to adopt in an emergency. I thought that the trg of FAs was revised and now dictated that the FAs were not allowed to demo the mask that way any more, but that they had to put the mask over their nose and mouth for real, but I flew three weeks ago, and the WestJet FAs were not complying with that change. I absolutely love your videos! This was so informative! Thank you

    The oxygen generators produce a lot of heat as well, it is stored separated, pressurised air tanks would leak out over time.
    The compact oxygen generators are lightweight and are changed out for new ones every few years.
    There are small compressed oxygen cylinders that can be carried around and are in compartments, usually 8 or more and these are for cabin staff..

      Yes. You can pull the hose loose if you pull *too* hard on the mask. The hose is *easily* pressed back onto the fitting. Remember, pull *firmly* , don't *yank* it.

      Yes. The compounds are all over rich in oxygen, so they decompose leaving an oxide and spare oxygen. A simple example, not used for this purpose, is hydrogen peroxide breaking down to oxygen and water. 2 H2O2 => 2 H2O + O2. And a lot of heat.

    • @alexkirk7463
      @alexkirk7463 4 года назад +1

      There's a couple of reasons for this
      1. So rescue crews can see inside in the event of an emergency landing
      2. If it's dark outside (and this ties in with having the lights dimmed for take-off and landing) it allows your eyes to adapt to the ambient light. That way if you have to evacuate for any reason your eyes won't need to adjust to see properly.
      The same applies for if it's bright outside, your eyes can adjust to the brightness so it won't just be a wash of white when you get out of that emergency exit

    • @74gear
      @74gear  4 года назад +1

      so you can see during an evacuation if there is something out there before you open the door

    • @roichir7699
      @roichir7699 4 года назад +1

      Additional to the already mentioned. You want to know if there is a fire on one side of the plane after the landing did go wrong. So you can use the exit on the other side.

    Thanks for explaining the extra masks. I was wondering how that worked with lap babies. The first time we flew with our daughter, she was 4 months old. I had flown before, so I knew what to expect. But as a new mom flying with a baby, I had a panic moment on our first flight because I was freaking out about “what if we crash, will there be an oxygen mask for her? How do I get one for her?” Everything was fine, but that was on my mind. Now I know!

  • @roichir7699
    @roichir7699 4 года назад

    Oxygen tanks and the necessary equipment is much more complicated than these cartouches. It is very expensive to build and maintain to get the reliability you need.
    The cartouches however can be easily replaced and maintained outside the aircraft. They do not need to be specially build for this aircraft and can be mass produced. And you don't need a lot of manpower and time to maintain them. If there is a problem a mechanic can replace the cartouche in some minutes not hours and a grounded aircraft if that happens to a tank system.
    There are more reasons to use that system, but these are the basics.

    Kelsey, some commercial jets had oxygen tanks in the past, like 12 or 15 liter bottles installed in the wall for passenger. There was an event where one bottle exploded and ripped a part of the fuselage. I think after that accident they implemented a new rule regarding oxygen tanks on board. It is true, like 20 x15 liters tanks are like 500kg or almost 1000lbs. They are heavy and in a case of fire they would be a trigger for even bigger disaster( fire+oxygen) very bad combination.

      @@Boundwithflame23 For cabin crew in front and at the back there should be couple of 5-7 liter bottle with oxygen, it could be also used for first aid.The most important thing is to have some good trained cabin crew to make first aid like they are trained to do. Excellent info on things I’ve always wondered about. Thanx for posting. Great info on the stink and smoke associated with mask deployment. Some follow up questions: How do the masks get deployed? Is there a switch that triggers them? Is it done automatically? If switch, is it actuated by pilot or flight attendant? Is there an alarm in the cockpit so that the pilots see there is a need to descend at once? How hard does one need to yank to initiate flow? Why does the bag not inflate?

    • @SmilerAndSadEyes
      @SmilerAndSadEyes 4 года назад

      great follow up questions, and if you don't mind i'd like to add one? Some one who is panicking might yank TOO hard. How hard of a pull will loosen a connection somewhere so not enough oxygen is available for normal breathing?

    • @roichir7699
      @roichir7699 4 года назад +1

      There is a switch in the cockpit and also an automatic deployment when the cabin pressure gets too low.
      There is an alarm too. More like all the cockpit is yelling at you and of course you can feel a rapid decompression.
      Just give it a firm pull, that would be enough. It is not designed to be used as a rope.
      The bag may inflate like a balloon if there is more pressure that on the outside. It acts as a pressure control device. You will get enough oxygen even if the bag does not inflate.
