I will take Zenyatta Mondatta any day over Ghost.... Copeland at his absolute peak, the band still wants it at this point. MTV still not a player in making this band or the previous albums either. The overall playing on Voices in my Head, Shadows in the Rain, and Driven to tears is great listening as well as great for dancing and more. I like where Pete is coming from in this ranking, Martin wouldn't know a great jam unless it is full of "production". Saw The Police back in 1982 two weeks before the college year was out. 30 minutes of Voices in my Head was a party perfect marvel. Still to this day it is my favorite concert. Almost 40 years ago!

Shadows in the Rain, Driven To Tears, Voices in My Head... the album is tight, edgy and great to dance to as well. Just want to pop and jam all over the place when you hear this album. 1. Zenyatta Mondatta (I love the "world music" feel of this album and the songwriting is strong pretty much all the way through, even the "comic relief" songs work well for me)
    2. Synchronicity (this album contains Sting's most classic and timeless songwriting- "Sychronicity I" and "Murder by Numbers" are underappreciated)
    3. Ghost in the Machine (there's 6 or 7 great songs here, but there's also about 4 or 5 throwaways)
    4. Regatta de Blanc (this is the best "sound" the Police ever found, but apart from the Big 4- "Message in a Bottle," "Walking on the Moon," "Bring on the Night," & "The Bed's Too Big''- the songwriting here is not as strong as the top 3 albums)
    5. Outlandos d'Amour (the sound of fusion musicians trying to make punk music... there's a handful of good songs but the album as a whole comes across as a bit forced)

Synchronicity great album that I bought primarily for the Synchronicity I and II tracks not on GH collection. The Police is one of my favorite bands of all time, thank you guys for doing this. Here's my ranking:
5-Outlandos D'amour:Absolutely solid debut, definitely more consistent than other albums of this catalogue; sticking on the punk/reggae switching.
    4-Sinchronicity
3-Zenyatta Mondatta:Another solidly consistent record, it's filled with extremely memorable *poppy* songs but yet filled with lovely hooks and musicianship
2-Reggaeta De Blanc:Even thought this album is good top to bottom; i think it's very unconsistent, because it's got amazing songs like Message In A Bottle(my favorite Police song, one of my all-time favorites) or It's Alright For You, but also has some strange and experimental stuff like No Time This Time or On Any Other Day; the rest is all great for me.
1-Ghost In The Machine:It's a very polished album, that mixes a bunch of genres in for the killer musicianship to explore.

MTV started in 1981 so it began just before mid-career of The Police. They still made videos before MTV, then once MTV started they played their videos that were already made. So the Police didn't miss the MTV Era they definitely benefited from the exposure that it provided. They were all over MTV and their videos were played often. They had a total of 18 videos.
The other one that was played continuously was Wrapped Around your Finger.
    "Roxanne" (1978)
    "Can't Stand Losing You" (1978)
    "Message in a Bottle" (1979)
    "Walking on the Moon" (1979)
"The Bed's Too Big Without You" (1979)
    "So Lonely" (1980)
"Don't Stand So Close to Me" (1980)
"De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da" (1980)
"Spirits in the Material World" (1981)
    "One World (Not Three)" (1981)

    2. Synchronicity... I saw this tour at Pittsburgh Civic Arena seated over Stewart Copeland’s shoulder which was an amazing place to be. String played a lot to us too. AWESOME SHOW !! The tunes from Synchronicity take on a lot of energy live. Love the quiet tunes. Sometimes band unrest produces some amazing material.
    3. Outlandos D’Amour ...Love the heaviness and energy of all the cuts.
    4. Reghatta De Blanc ...WALKING ON THE MOON and all the grooves... not a bad tune.
    5. Zenyetta Mondatta ... I was in a punk band and at the time, this album was off my radar. But really love the tunes now.. I don’t find it watered down at all.

Interesting thing for me - In the 90’s I bought the Message in a Box (Complete Recordings) box set and that was my true introduction into the Police catalog … so I tend to tend to think of the discography as one big chunk not individual albums! But still, I’ll give it a try -
5 - Outlandos D’Amour - The punk-era Police has some charm. But you gotta be in the mood for it and sometimes it misfires.
4 - Reggatta De Blanc - 3 iconic tracks in Message in a Bottle, Walking on the Moon and Bring on the Night. The rest can be hit or miss.
3 - Ghost in the Machine - I like the risks the Police took on this record. Those chances produced some treasures, especially Invisible Sun.
2 - Synchronicity - One of the best Side 2’s in music history. Not that side 1 is bad.
1 - Zenyatta Mondatta - This record seems to be the culmination of what the Police do best. Sting really branched out as a writer and got to his ceiling on this record. The beautiful album cover reflects the music; a stylistic purity.

Pete: "I also dig a Hole In My Life a lot." Me too Pete, me too. Great insights by both of ya. 1) Ghost 2) Regatta 3) Zenyatta 4) Synchronicity 5) Outlandos. Not much separating 1 and 5. Ghost's lyrics and Regatta's drumming particularly exceptional. Super band indeed!

I've heard the story of the show at the Chance in Po'Town, Oct 23 1978...(was actually their 4th US gig - Philly followed CBGB's) - I think it was in the Andy Summers Book - he said they discussed cancelling the gig but thought they could use the practice and as a band agreed that those four people (or 8) would get the show of their lives. The next night they played in Syracuse.

Whenever Pete has a guest, I almost invariably agree with Pete's takes. Even before Popoff could utter "Zenyatta Mondatta" and I saw the blue triangle against and orange gradient for the number five pick, I thought "there's a hot take right there."

@@AbbeyRoadkill1 Except Outlandos d'Amour. I can't rank that one above any of the others for any reason. Just too many throw away tracks that don't work for me. Just my opinion.

@@AbbeyRoadkill1 I agree to a point. All five are strong enough so that you could make a case for any of them to be number one. It's more that I take umbrage over Zenyatta Mondatta in the fifth slot. Really? And you gotta love Popoff looking away from the camera disinterested as Pete is trying to give his justifications for Z.M. being his top pick.

    1. Zenyatta Mondatta - When the World is Running Down... is such an awesome song along with Canary in A Coalmine, Bombs Away, Driven to Tears, etc., etc.
    2. Outlandos d'Amour - Truth Hits Everybody is my favorite Police song. One of their more Punkier compositions
    3. Regatta de Blanc
    4. Ghost in the Machine
    5. Synchronicity
I saw these guys in August of 83 at JFK Stadium in Philly on the Synchronicity Tour. I remember it being ungodly hot!!! But even in the heat i was entranced by Stewart Copeland's drumming. Maybe it was the "substances" i was under but he was a joy to watch work!!

This is a very interesting one. I thought The Police were overrated for years. It was only about a decade ago where I finally came around to loving these guys.
    My rankings:
#5. Outlandos D'Amour (Their most raw, punk-ish sounding. Favorite songs are So Lonely and Truth Hits Everybody.)
#4. Ghost In The Machine (This would have ranked higher if a few of the tunes didn't come off as aimless and repetitive, which is ironic, considering that I listen to some things that most would deem repetitive. Top favorite song is Invisible Sun, while Rehumanize Yourself and Omegaman are a few others.)
#3. Reggatta De Blanc (A bit more polished than the debut, and with stronger songs. Walking On The Moon and Bring On The Night are my top picks.)
#2. Synchronicity (Indeed, I'm sick to death of Every Breath You Take. But the rest of this album is solid. Atmospheric, haunting and moody. Walking In Your Footsteps is my favorite.)
#1. Zenyatta Mondatta (Is it truly fashionable to rank this one low? If so, I don't see why. Shows you how much I pay attention to popular consensus, and how I don't give a damn, either way. This was *always* my favorite Police album. Not one weak tune, not one weak melody, idea, texture. Rushed as it may have been, it worked. Only my #2 comes close to the sheer consistency of this one.)
And for the first time ever, me and Pete have the EXACT same ranking of a band's entire catalogue. Crazy.

Outlandos d'Amour is my number 1 and actually one of my favorite albums of all time. The idea of Sting making music that is raw, stark at times and almost sloppy seems obscene now but the needle almost bounces across this record with dominating drums, floating guitar and truly distinctive vocals.
    Sophisticated ? No. Satisfying ? Absolutely !

Regatta De Blanc for me,it was never off my turntable when it was released along with Donald Fagen and Steely Dan,but then,EVERYONE had a copy,it was like the 80's Dark Side of the Moon(up to that point and although recorded in last breath of the 70's it had the archetypal 80's sound for me) in terms of popularity worldwide and sales.
Outlandos is also a favourite, but the debut is bloody superb too.

Great insight and stories! Synchronicity, Zenyatta and Ghost and are my top three in that order. Synch I & II are among my all time faves with King of Pain. Kissed a girl for the first time listening to Zenyatta - Voices and listened to Ghost a lot while stationed in Germany. Invisible Sun is a great urban foggy morning song. In my opinion all three are underrated musicians, especially Copeland.

Just stumbled across this clip of my all-time favorite band. My two cents:
    1. Ghost In The Machine, my absolute favorite (with Darkness, Spirits, Secret Journey, etc.) although #2 has the most jams on it of all five...
    2. Synchronicity (I can't stand Every Breath either, but so many other gems including Tea In The Sahara, Walking In Your Footsteps, etc.)
    3. Regatta De Blanc (Bed's Too Big, Walking on the Moon, Bring on the NIght so great!)
    4. Zenyatta Mondatta (the first album I heard that got me hooked at 11 years old!)
    5. Outlandos D'Amour (Masoko Tanga might be my favorite track)

I saw The Police live twice on March, 1979 and in 1981. In the 1979 show, The Police was playing the Texas Opry House. The club had introduced concert seating about 6 rows in front of the stage. There was a Roxanne beauty contest. A young woman who grew up in a neighborhood next to mine won the contest. I knew Carla Rodriguez when she was a cute little 13 years old. At 18 years old, she won the Roxanne contest. She was a Babe by 1979.
The 1979 concert started. Sting was encouraging the audience to stand up and dance. The Texas Opry House security would not have that shenanigans.
Sting was angry and for the night The Police played speeded up, punked out versions of their songs from the first two albums. The sound was along the lines of their two singles, “Fall Out” and “Dead End Job”. It was a great show, if you were into punk rock.

Ghost is one of the best and most influential albums to me of any band, it was the one that really got me into the Police, and Stew's work on it is why I started drumming. Also occasionally feel that Zenyatta and Regatta are interchangeable.
