Speaking from experiance of living in the upper Midwest in small towns of less than 5K; your last name, who your parents and grandparents were, and if you own land is looked at as status, and as a judgement of your character. It can litterally lock someone on a personal and financial track at a young age.
People should be evaluated based on their character only ! You either are or are not a good person , a hard worker , a generous individual , a kind soul with a heart of gold . There’s very little middle ground and seldom do those traits mix . Be kind and generous to a fault , if you can . You will be a much happier person for it !

I agree...this especially rings a bell in rural areas in the South, where land ownership and family names and ties determine status.
