I still remember before the game’s Release there was this fantastic long video that explored the lore of cyberpunk, I hope you do the same just like the fallout series with the lore
I suppose 'San Franciscan ghost town' is a bit of an ill-descriptor. An article about the Morro Bay Massacre was published by a San Francisco news company. This article is what peaked Night's interest in using the site for his new city project. I realize Morro Bay is kinda btwn LA and SF. It's very tough to provide a complete lore breakdown while also keeping the videos under 60s. I'll be better.
Thank you for the clarification. Native Californian here and I heard morro bay and was like “San franciscan?” It’s a really beautiful place irl, quiet as hell with a lovely population of people
(Questionably) luckily for him, Night City only became overrun with crime and violence once he died. His assassination was actually carried out by gangsters so that organized crime groups could take over the city.
A thing I remember my dad told me about the original pen and paper is Night City spanned the entire Californian coast due to absorbing all the smaller cities
Back in 2020 before the city was nuked and involved in lots of wars etc. The place has basically had a facelift every 2-3 decades, but never quite reached the golden age of the 2020s.
I would be super interested in learning about Corpo Wars!!! That's like one of my biggest wonders in this universe. I mean, the corps had to make monsters like Adam Smasher to fight one another so I'd find it super cool to see the human atrocities they created to go to war with one another o.O Love your lore videos!
His wife kept Night City Corp alive, so they still do stuff in the city, but it's a bit hush hush mysterious, as to what the Corp actually does besides construction contracts. Anyway, that said it's maybe possible he survived/faked his death.
Quick rundown on time line I hope this channel explains more of: Night’s wife tried to emulate her husbands dream and succeeded for a while as did her successor but over time gangs and crime lords took over and made the city into a bloodshed. Overtime the corporations within the city got tired of this as bloody actions were bad for business and literally went to war with the gangs. Thus resulting in mega corps winning and eventually Arasaka cleaning up and rearranging the city to fit its intended direction ofc with an angle to benefit Arasaka to an almost unlimited cycle of profit from citizens. Night city remained autonomous to its own jurisdiction and night corp stayed alive albeit a shell of its former self (not even being recognized on the game map as a blip to fast travel to) and Arasaka truly being the powerhouse of the town. Less bloody but more corrupt than ever.
Morro Bay? I just found out that I live in Night City. I can't say I'm surprised that they planted a city here, but hot damn San Luis Obispo fell apart.
I have a crazy theory. What if Mr. Blue Eyes is actually an Ai, that took over a body. One that went rouge, and modeled its personality and actions on that of Richard Night, but instead of trying to create a Utopia for humans, due to its rogue nature, its trying to create a Utopia for Ai?
Ironically, his name was spelled Knight in the original 2020 TTRPG book, but it said that the citizens themselves later dropped the K from "Knight City" Hilarious lore crossover.
so happy you’re touching this series, always wanted to know the story but never got into the game (got it when it first game out and the bugs have scared me away)
I wish we could get bio mods in the game since biotechnica made biological implants that could make you look like an animal if you wanted that also gave you special abilities
@@futuza I mean in the original table top. I mean, you basically would do that. But this current iteration of the gang in the game seems to be more about just being beefcakes
@@nerofoxkrell The Biosculpted Exotics mod will partially do what you want (no abilities though, you'd probably have to combine it with another mod for that). TBF exotic bodysculpting in the tabletop usually didn't give you abilities (other than risking giving you cyberpsychosis or cancer depending on if you're talking CP 2020 or CP Red) unless the referee was doing funny things, it mostly just altered appearance and changed your attractiveness score/acted as a way to disguise yourself. It was mostly just cosmetic. If you wanted new abilities you would combine it with cyberware, eg: bodysculpt some cheetah legs and also buy Corvette Cyberlegs to actually mechanically make yourself go faster. In fact sometimes it actually made your abilities worse (eg adding claws could give you a -2 to REF).
I still want to know where exactly does Cyberpunk’s timeline separate from ours. I have a feeling that it must’ve been a very large change, given the fact that there are megacorps, flying cars and cybernetics in the 2020s
Free/night city: do you want depression do you want pain don't worry we got it here daily for the price of free! All you need to do is live or born in here!
There's one element of night City that always bugs me in the new cyberpunk lore. In the old cyberpunk lore from the RPG night city was called night City because the city was so overbuilt overdeveloped and overcrowded that the skyscrapers blocked out the Sun. So the place had about the same level of UV radiation exposure as people living in Gotham City. So night City should basically be jet black and neon Chrome cyberpunk hellspace or no one has ever actually seen the light of day.
The term Night City first existed in the cyberpunk genere in the 1984 novel called Neuromancer by William Gibson and it was located in Japan. Would recommend reading the novel its influence is all over CDP's syberpunk.
Well it did untill the gov collapsed in the 1990s and the entire city was caught in the middle of war between the Hells angels and the local police. Those who survived pretty much left and Night bought the land for pennies on the dollar

Given the political landscape of the US right now and major technological advancements of today, something like Cyberpunk may actually be a reality in the 2070s. Not exactly 100% but something like it.
Wait, Night City is Morro Bay? And by the lore it was founded in the 1990's? I grew up there at that time, and that shit just fucking fits. San Luis Obispo county was wild with fucked up shit back then. They had a serial killer in Rex Allen Krebs. A major unsolved (very recently solved) murder in Kristin Smart caused by incompetent police. And an actual honest to god satanic murder with Elyse Pahler. Then you have all the stuff that went down at Poly Royal in 1990. Avila Beach needed to be completely demolished because of an oil leak from corporate malfeasance. Then a turd war between the Norteños and Sureños. There was even rumors about stuff going on between the Hells Angels and Mongols. But people flock to that area as a vacation spot. Blinded by the veneer put on by the pleasant weather and sun reflecting off the ocean they fail to see the blood and the filth.
