  • The Washington State Patrol is investigating a fatal crash where the driver claims his Tesla was on autopilot when it fatally struck a motorcyclist.
It’s still early in the investigation, and WSP is still trying to determine if the car was in autopilot as the driver says. There are also questions about whether the car may have somehow malfunctioned as it crashed into the motorcycle.
Investigation reports on the fatal crash say the Tesla driver involved told investigators his car was on autopilot, and he was briefly distracted by his cell phone when suddenly “there was a bang and the vehicle lurched forward as it accelerated and collided with the motorcycle.”
The driver of the Tesla also admitted to having one drink before the crash. Responding troopers conducted a field sobriety test, but didn’t find much evidence on the scene to support a DUI charge. The driver was ultimately arrested for vehicular homicide involving distracted driving but has not been formally charged yet so KOMO News is not naming him.

Tesla could've cleared that up within minutes.
So the vehicle WAS on autopilot and they're trying to dodge responsibility.
If it had not been on autopilot Tesla would've pointed that out immediately when questioned about the vehicle's performance (which is constantly being uploaded to improve the software and accurate mapping of roads those vehicles travel).

I don't own a tesla or even a car made in the last 20 years, but it doesnt matter what features are on the car, the driver is responsible. Im not even legally allowed to coast with my manual transmission in neutral, this guy is not allowed to drive down the road "momentarily " distracted by his cell phone.

I have a Tesla with Full Self Driving. It works 99% of the time but I have experienced occasional un-commanded slow-downs and rarely it has started to turn onto a street even though I didn't have a destination programmed. I am continuously monitoring and take over at the slightest indication of something strange (you just grab the wheel and it shuts Autopilot off). In addition, you are required to slightly move the steering wheel every 15 seconds on side streets but on highways that time is extended (usually about every 45 seconds) so there is plenty of time to get distracted. I don't trust the thing as far as I can throw it. I think the driver in this case clearly admitted fault. You can't just ignore everything around you and hope for the best.

This is why, until they've perfected absolutely flawless level 4 autonomous control, it should be illegal for the vehicle to have constant control of the steering. That should only come into play during evasive maneuvering, NOT during normal travel.
Clearly the vehicle was in autonomous mode and Tesla is trying to find out a way to say it wasn't or they would've taken one look at the telemetry data and said it was under human control - and said human was not paying attention. The vehicle should have also attempted to maneuver away from the collision regardless of its operation mode unless it was struck by something else - be it another vehicle or the motorcycle itself.
Also, the cameras should've recorded the entire incident.

This entire story is BS. If you own a Tesla and drive it regularly, you'd instantly realize all the nonsense from the reporter and BS story from the driver.
Once the black box data is checked, it will be very obvious that someone was driving their car without assistance and texting.
If they had had the driver assist or autopilot on this, it would not have happened.
If their statement was true, they would have made it at the same time given the recorded camera video from the car.
If Tesla had spent money on advertising, the media would leave them alone. They are so afraid the other car manufacturers might do the same thing and stop buying ads.
The only thing that will be true in this accident is, in the end, everyone will know what happened once that data is released.
This guy's going to prison .

    • @WaxPaper

It's always gonna be the driver's fault, autopilot or not. Whether the autopilot works as advertised is a separate issue. This isn't the first time we've heard about a Tesla being unable to detect obstacles in it's path. The USG just released a report with those exact findings. Autopilot is L2, but it's being billed as L4. That's the real problem. People are too stupid to use it correctly, and using it correctly means never trusting it for a second.

    • @Patriot3
      @Patriot3 6 дней назад

@WaxPaper I would expect that answer from anyone watching the fake news and not owning one of their own.
I have been running over 100 miles a day for years now. A person can not appreciate how well the vehicle works until they have driven on the system for 3k miles. I have elon mode, so it's hands off. Every time someone rides with me, you get the feeling there bordering on the idea it's magic.
I'm not about to sleep while communicating, but you could, for the most part. Just drove from Georgia to Washington and might have driven for 30 minutes at the most. Today, I'm leaving for Montana and expect the same results, and most of the country is 85 mph.
When I bought my first one, I have two now. I expected it to be a joke. It's unreal how much we'll everything works on the cars.
The learning curve is a bit steep on day one. I think they should slowly turn on systems over a few hundred miles. It's a bit of overload to your first time.

So, Tesla will tell you that you have to have your attention on the car at all times… almost as if you are driving. I know that realistically people don’t do this, but let’s say people are following the rules. Why would you use autopilot if you have to keep the same focus as driving, but where you aren’t really driving? Seems like simply it driving would be less boring and less tedious.

It isn't so much about getting lawmakers to "do something" as it is getting lawmakers to just butt out. It's the "do something" attitude that has lawmakers promoting this and related technologies well before they are safely and effectively baked. Most lawmakers today are navel-gazers, interested more in being "influencers" than they are at legit representing the people.

Hopefully Tesla presses charges against news posts that suggest their product is responsible for deaths. Remember how many criminals attempted to crash prius's before it became common knowlege that they use black boxes to record driver's actions. Then all the sudden those claims stopped. It is very unlikely that autopilot took control from the driver, because the driver is always the one in control even when using autopilot, and crashed into a motorcycle. The lawlessness and irresponsibility of Seattleites will not work against a world power corporation. If this is your claim be prepared to defend yourself.
