  • ERROR: Turns out the Master System converter for the Mega Drive was actually just a pass-through adapter - the Mega Drive itself was fully backwards compatible. This blows my mind, mainly because the converter was so bloody expensive...
    The GB Color always seemed oddly low-tech and outdated to me - I think it's because I had an Atari Lynx 8 years before the GBC was released. Mind you, that cost a fortune and had a battery life of 12 seconds so SWINGS AND ROUNDABOUTS INNIT MATE

    I remember that exact Harry Potter game. I have a cute story about it as well.
    I was like 7 at the time when I won my Gameboy from a chip packet competition. Got Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone for Christmas later.
    There was a part of the game - Charms Class - where you had to remember Professor Flitwick's movements as he levitated a variety of objects. According to Dad after I asked him for help, it was impossible to remember the number of moves you were expected to remember to progress. As a youngling, it was upsetting for me that I couldn't get past this seemingly simple puzzle.
    So, my parents decided to help. Mum sat down with a notepad, while Dad watched the screen and helped me remember all the movements. Together, the three of us overcame charms class; Dad would call out the motions, Mum would transcribe them, then she'd read them back to us as I input the movements.
    My parents were never a big fan of video games at all, so to this day it's a fond memory because they went to that trouble. Thanks Mum and Dad.
    For anyone curious, the actual fight with Voldemort was easier than bloody charms class.

      There was a similar ordeal with Final Fantasy X-2, if I remember correctly. In a side quest, in order to deactivate (or reactivate? so much time has passed) the lightning towers in the Thunder Plains or whatever, you had to input some fairly long button combinations, a lot of which were frankly impossible to remember without some sort of mnemonics, in which I am sort of bad. So I cheated: I prepared a sheet of paper and a pen, and transcribed the symbols as they were shown on screen. They were written kind of badly because I wasn't looking at what I actually wrote, but they were exact nonetheless. Then I had more than enough time to repeat the whole sequence (some of them were about 12 symbols or so).
      And yeah, the final boss was much easier. (I don't even remember what it was.)

    Nowadays backwards compatability just means "buy it again on the digital store or get the HD rereleased edition".

      Leave it to Nintendo to be weirdly paranoid over counterfeits and piracy.
      They ruined the N64 and GameCube due to their stupid game media decisions, especially the GC, but also especially the N64 stupid expensive low storage cartridges. But hey! They saved 10 cents from all the piracy prevention, and scared away all the 3rd parties and 90% of multiplatform games were too big to fit on 64 MB frigging stupid stupid stupid cartridges. But hey, who needs 3rd party money anyway? 😮😂

      +YokusaHHart HP 1 and 2 on the GBC were okay for western developed JRPG-likes. They took the same route for Prisoner of Azkaban on the GBA because of how much better reception the GBC versions of the first two movie games received than their GBA counterparts, and it's all the better for taking that route as well, having a very Golden Sun-esque vibe.

      There are backlight mods for the GameBoy and GameBoy Pocket but the Colour's screen has to be front lit.

    My first game on the GBC was a Pokemon Gold & Silver 2-in-1 cartridge from Thailand. The translation was best described as "So Bad It's Good" and it's a miracle that kid me managed to beat it, too. (Or Gold at least).

    I imagine the reason why it's the "Game Boy Color" is due to trademark. That's literally the trademark name, with that spelling. Guess they didn't want to bother with an additional trademark when it was such a minor difference to the spelling.
    Someone else almost certainly would have said this before (I'm slow to get to YT videos, way too many subscribed channels).

    • @chigimonky
      @chigimonky 8 лет назад +1

      Or maybe because each letter in "color" represents one of the colors the handheld was released in. Or maybe because the majority of primary English speakers in the world spell it color.

    • @chigimonky
      @chigimonky 8 лет назад +2

      +TheHitchslap If you were to add up the populations of all natively English speaking countries besides the U.S. it wouldn't even come close to the population of the U.S.. In millions; Canada:35, U.K.:64, Australia:23, Ireland:5, South Africa Native English speaking population:5.3, New Zealand 4.5. So in the aggregate there are 137 million people living in English speaking countries that use "colour" and 318 million in the U.S. using "color". So no, your claim that "the spelling color is almost certainly in the minority", is not correct.

    The power base converter actually didn't have any master system hardware in it at all. It was simply a cartridge form factor and pinout conversion. The Genesis actually was backwards compatible with the master system, and contained all the hardware needed to run the master system games other than the cartridge slot.

    • @thomasjenkins7506

    • @BrySkye
      @BrySkye 8 лет назад +1

      +Thomas Jenkins It meant the adaptor was considerably cheaper than if it had to have the Master System guts in it.
      You didn't _need_ to buy it either. If you were willing, you could technically take the console apart and wire the cartridge directly into it and it would work.
      Not exactly practical.
      A better example for what Ashens is talking about would be the Super Gameboy for the SNES or Gameboy Advance Player for the Gamecube. Those units basically had the Gameboy hardware inside them.

The consoles that use the cables are multi-faceted as in they play more than one platform of games, and if you're into those games as well then your investment is sound (unless it is the Gamecube component cables then you are just getting ripped off). • @RWL2012
      @RWL2012 8 лет назад +9

      The blur was removed on the Game Boy Pocket. The Game Boy Color having a colour screen is the main reason for its existence

    • @zedorda1337
      @zedorda1337 8 лет назад +3

      Gameboy Pocket had reduced blur but it was no where near removed. It is the refresh rate that reduces the blur and the Pocket had the same refresh rate as the original Gameboy just better technology in the screen. Going from the pea soup to true black & white. the Gameboy Color had double the refresh rate having a huge effect on the blur. It wasn't till the Gameboy Advance that they completely removed the blur.

    I never saw The Blob back in my GBC days, but I remember I did have another light that Nyko produced called the "Worm Light". It basically looked like a little, blue street lamp on a coiled-up wire. It was wicked cool at the time, and since it was adjustable, it was easy to angle it so that the reflection of the LED could be hidden.
    When the GBA came out, though, I upgraded to the UFO Light. It was similar in concept, but instead of a coiled wire, it had a big, kinda blobby-looking tube thing, which bulged out at the connector port, and tapered up to the light. I think the light cover was interchangeable, as well.

    I'm starting to think I have way too much time on my hands when I'm adding GBS conversions t play on my GB Everdrive, which I have without the front label. Also, the SGB can do much more than give games custom palettes and borders. Games like Space Invaders and A Bug's Life, Small Soldiers, Animaniacs, PooNyan, Beach Volleyball and Pro Mahjong Kiwame GB, and a few other games are worth looking into. I have also written some sample code to do things like jump to the SGB staff roll, access the unused SNES OBJ_TRN mode and fiddle with other impressive, underused features.

      ***** I have never really liked using headphones when I play handheld consoles tbh. I will either listen to it through the normal speakers or if I am somewhere I cant listen then I just have the volume turned down.

      +llpalm08 Fair enough. I always hated the buzzing sound the GBC made when using headphones, to the SP not having one always bugged me XD

    They didn't change color to colour because the GBC only launched with 5 colors. Each launch color was represented with a letter in color. If they made it the UK spelling, it would have missed the correlation.

    You can hold a D-pad direction (and optional buttons) at the ba-ding logo screen to choose a colour-scheme. As long as you're holding a direction you can cycle through them all until you're ready to let go making the game start with your choice.
