I never understood color theory until this video , i did hear bits and pieces but now i get it =DD theres whoooole science behind it O_O mixed colors on my own but found it quite boring and id always use wayyyy more acryli paint than i needed and id end up throwing dry paint away which always hurt my heart seeing it xDD now i know how to work it...
Oh my god, I've been in so many art classes and have never been taught this. When you pulled out the primary colors + b/w and started busting out skin tones, my jaw dropped. You've been such a good teacher on all of these how-to videos! Thank you!!
Yes that is actually true. Morgan Freeman has lots of points of reference to his face and facial structure which actually makes it easier than Bill Murray or any of the smooth skinned Kardashians. Its all a matter of reference points.
You know, I usually just draw and listen to what's going on in the video as I'm working on commissions, but MAN. When you bring in my man Morgan Freeman(MY GOD) I just could not tear away at how stunning you made him look(that and the fact I love that 1000 year old man lol). I love how your instructions weren't confusing and you even made me to stop doing digital for a while and work with some traditional mediums, there's just something so pleasing and satisfactory about painting that just gets me. Beautiful work, I'm sorry for gushing can't wait to see more!
Beautiful comment. I mean seriously painting is very satisfying, in digital art you have the undo options and finding the right tone, the right colour is easier but you don't get to feel, smell and enjoy the beauty of painting.
Robin. Sorry to hear about your divorce...sadly I've been there and done that. Wish I'd tried art to help me recover, as I feel it would have helped me hugely at the time. I hope you will feel back to your self again soon hun. God bless you and may He walk with you always. I simply love watching you paint, it's so soothing. You are extremely talented hun! Have a great, great day. Be well. Bye for now. All the best in your life journey from here on in. Ttfn x
The Morgan portrait looks amazingly rich with colors! I love painting people of color for this reason❤️. The paint mixing section was really helpful, thanks robin!😊❤️
Papaya Khan well in art probably cuz if you can paint the deepest skin tone with adjusted shadows n transitions you can get everything in between. also most people can find a lot of techniques n tutorials of white/light skintones so between the two you should be able to do them all.
Papaya Khan I see your point. I'm sorry if I offended anyone. As an art student, I casually used the term inclusively since I'm used to painting people of all skin tones. I actually didn't realize there would be a misunderstanding.
these are amazing and i'm so glad you did a darker skin tone because it's harder to find decent tutorials on dark skin tones but they are just so beautiful and interesting to paint! what kind of oil paints and medium do you use? i'm looking into trying oil painting but i want to be sure i'm buying decent things because oils are so expensive and i don't want to end up with money wasted on a poor quality brand xx
how do you get an exact outline of their faces to start with? i would love to see the process you have to execute that. i always struggle getting the exact outline of someones face. it would be the biggest help if you could show me or tell me what you do? i love your work and im trying my hardest to get to this level
Amazing.... I struggle a lot with light skin tones, I always seem to end up with something too pink or too orange. I think I'm getting better at it with more practice but it just frustrates me
I know this was commented two years ago but I used to struggle a lot with that too and one thing that really helped me is just adding in the complimentary color of whatever color is too prominent like adding blue when it’s looking too orange
This is SO HELPFUL. Most people who do skin tutorials they only do one skin tone. This helps so much to have two different people with different skin tones as your references. THANK YOU!!!!
Thank you you are awesome! What an amazing God given gift you have! Been teaching art for fifteen years and haven't seen anyone with your skills at your age!
this was CRAZY helpful! Especially the color mixing portion! It's really easy to get bogged down by relative colors for skin tones but seeing you mix them was so helpful!! Thanks!!
Omgg I watched these videos religiously in middle school!! You're basically the main reason I ever picked up painting I'm so glad I found your channel again
Hey, I have been following for for a few years now and this Fall 2020 semester my University art class is using this video for lessons. I hope that makes you proud!
Could you also use the same methods if you are only unsing acrylics? I find it hard to mix all the colors togehter on the face because it dries so fast!
Simstastic is right! You would be looking specifically for what is called an acrylic retarder. It commonly comes in a tallish plastic bottle with a thin tip to squeeze the medium out of. It's kind of like a watery gel, transparent, and blends easily with acrylic paint. For how much paint she uses in this demo, I would say squeeze out maybe a dime-sized amount and a clean palette knife to mix into each color separately- or just as you go. :P Use about 1/3 to twice that amount if you want it to dry much slower. Don't use too much or you'll tint the color, or make it too watery (which is fine if you want to do that specifically). Happy mixing!
so helpful thank you! I recently got some water soluble oils because you don't need any of the harsh chemicals of normal oils - but I find it so hard to apply the paint thinly and evenly for detail:( I would be so grateful if you could give me some tips for doing detailed paintings with oils! I really want to improve at realism.
Antonia Jameson If you buy oil specifically designed for oil paints (they normally come in little jars that you can find in art stores) it helps thin the color and make it smooth.
the cool thing about water soluble oils is that you can mix them with pretty much anything, i.e. water, oil mediums (like linseed oil or alkyds) any acrylic mediums, traditional oils, acrylics, etc., so you can do a lot of different things. plain old water will thin the paints just fine for details + decrease drying time (and a smaller sized brush will help lol). Camilla D'Errico is a world famous artist who creates stunning work with water soluble oils.
Reading through some comments I see a ton of gushers . . . I would also be one! Your a talented and wonderful Teacher and Artist, this is truly evident that even after 2 years people are still finding your content and learning from it! I learned many of the "tips" that your presenting years ago and yet if you do not practice it, you will not retain it! I also spent years as a digital artist and that Damn Undo key is the bane of my current existence! You can develop so many bad habits from its use and I was/am not immune!!! I am relearning and I want to thank you for being so generous with your time and efforts. Sometime we just need that push or refresher to get back on track! Thanks Robin!
i remember when i was 13 i asked someone to teach me how to paint realistic portraits, like an artist teacher, and they said u have to learn yourself, but then i found this channel, and so now fastword a decade, i am very disappointed that they said this.
I HAVE A GREAT IDEA! why not make a palette on glass and put the glass on top of a reference for colours. So just print the reference 2 times: one for colours and one for the whole picture.😂❤
This is a stand out painting video. As a beginner, my mixes often end up pink or green. You explained how to use the blues and reds to make the pink more like skin and how to use the opposite colour to green (red) on a colour wheel to lighten up the green. thanks for your real life help.
The painting is cool and all but the title is misleading. This is a tutorial on how to draw skin not on things to avoid and how to correct common mistakes. Great video and skill.
This is my second video of yours and I must say.. I’m obsessed 🤩 awesome quality and love that you’re you’re down to earth and relatable while teaching 🥰 10/10 def recommend!
This helped me so much. Even though I'm not aiming for photorealistic paintings I love to paint people and for that a great skintone is a must. Thank you 😘
Wow amazing I’m learning all about mixing colours and working on skin tones, great tutorial I’m an artist myself but love that I can learn off RUclips and talented people. Thank you for your help 👍
You have NO IDEA how much you just helped me. Acrylics and I have always had a strange relationship whenever skin tones came up. And now suddenly it clicked! Of course I still need practice... but you managed to help me so much in such a short time. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. Unfortunately I am not able to post a picture here (to show my progress) but I will link you in the instagram post to show everyone out there how grateful I am 😂
This is great! As soon as you pulled up the different acrylic paint bottles up, I knew this was going to be good. I have these EXACT same kinds, and I was wondering how to make a realistic face portrait. This was very helpful, thank you!!
amazing :) both entertaining and educational side notes: >at 5:02, i now understand why and how artists use pints of paint and create a masterpiece ( i don't actually have no idea about how acrylic paint works and how small amounts of paint would be enough for a finished painting) >I like how she holds the brush that way (I tried to do the same with my pencil, and it was quite fun :D )
AWESOME! Never thought of using both acrylic and oil together! It’s been quite a while for me having oil and acrylic paint, so today I thought of buying either. I had a hard time choosing between the two, but now I know I should have bought both!
Thanks so much for doing my man Morgan with oil paints I have some and have such a hard time with them in fact they came in a large set and I tried adding water and it was super clumpy and didn't mix but just from you in depth explanations I know what to do with them and the skins so thank you so much!!
remember kids, this is why color theory is important 👍
I thought the exact same thing ^_^!
Nastia same
I would learn color theory but I’m dumb and lazy and would forget it if I did learn it so no thank you :D
FUCK COLOR THEORY ON GANG, THAT SHIT IS SO IRRITATING.
imagine if this video was narrated by morgan freeman
Juicy Panpan And Bill Murray, joking with each other!
"And here we see the artist tear up their drawings and lay around bemoaning how bad their art is. Why does the artist do this? We don't know."

So who just read Tived's comment with Morgan Freeman's voice?

when doing hair, remember the frizzy natural hair PLEASE
i never find tutorials about that type of hair
Sofia Cavalcante Yess, pleasee!
Sofia Cavalcante Do you mean like Afro textured/ kinky hair?
G Sat no, i mean like, a 3C that its not the perfect wig/weave like hair. The real hair that has frizz in it, with non perfect curls
OK! thank you for that recommendation! I'll totally do a couple textures!
@Sofia can you point us in the direction of doing "frizzy"hair? I would like to see an example please. Thanks.
it's taken mem 2 years to find the right video to explain to me how to paint and i finally found it thank you so much
omg thank you!
Oh my god, I've been in so many art classes and have never been taught this. When you pulled out the primary colors + b/w and started busting out skin tones, my jaw dropped. You've been such a good teacher on all of these how-to videos! Thank you!!
I love that you chose Bill Murray and Morgan Freeman.and not Bella Hadid and some Kardashian
Natalie Hewitson I've found that they are a lot easier to draw/paint than some kardashian
Yes that is actually true. Morgan Freeman has lots of points of reference to his face and facial structure which actually makes it easier than Bill Murray or any of the smooth skinned Kardashians. Its all a matter of reference points.
XD thanks!
@ Natalie... wow... now that's DEEP.
?? A portrait is a portrait, i dont get why it would have matter if she did a kardashian
can you make a guide on the underpainting?
*^^

Robin Clonts My pleasure,, you deserve all the nice compliments you can get with talent like yours uwu~♡

Papaya Khan well in art probably cuz if you can paint the deepest skin tone with adjusted shadows n transitions you can get everything in between. also most people can find a lot of techniques n tutorials of white/light skintones so between the two you should be able to do them all.
but in general yeah...darker doesnt just mean black....agreed....
Papaya Khan I see your point. I'm sorry if I offended anyone. As an art student, I casually used the term inclusively since I'm used to painting people of all skin tones. I actually didn't realize there would be a misunderstanding.

First of all, the paintings were amazing. You are so talented, Robin. Second of all, your kitchen looks nice🙂
thank you! you should be able to see more of the new apartment in video this friday!
this was CRAZY helpful! Especially the color mixing portion! It's really easy to get bogged down by relative colors for skin tones but seeing you mix them was so helpful!! Thanks!!

Dear Robin, I wanted you to know that I think you have an amazing personality! Thank you for being a inspiration! God bless you !
How did you get the sketch of them before painting them? Transfer paper? I use transfer paper, but I noticed the sketch was not black, but yellowish.
Robin uses charcoal transfers. I think she has a video on it somewhere.
thank you K. Rose!

Hey, I have been following for for a few years now and this Fall 2020 semester my University art class is using this video for lessons. I hope that makes you proud!
I didn't even need to watch the full video, the intro song and the dramatic music made me subscribe 😂😂😂
This actually has such good lessons in, so many people can point but not teach to paint so thank you! Xx
Could you also use the same methods if you are only unsing acrylics? I find it hard to mix all the colors togehter on the face because it dries so fast!
You could use mediums to slow down acrylic's drying process.
Simstastic is right! You would be looking specifically for what is called an acrylic retarder. It commonly comes in a tallish plastic bottle with a thin tip to squeeze the medium out of. Ooh thank you for the tip!
Hey thank you Simstastic + Emily Carlisle I didn't even know that information!
No prob! There's all kinds of little secrets for acrylic- it's super flexible when it comes to mediums. :3

Antonia Jameson If you buy oil specifically designed for oil paints (they normally come in little jars that you can find in art stores) it helps thin the color and make it smooth.
Sarah L I have some medium but that just seems to make it gloopier- is oil different to medium?
Antonia Jameson It works best to use oils for oil paints. I tend to use linseed oil, but there's plenty of oils that work well with the paint.
Sarah L okay thank you I'll give it a try :)
the cool thing about water soluble oils is that you can mix them with pretty much anything, i.e. water, oil mediums (like linseed oil or alkyds) any acrylic mediums, traditional oils, acrylics, etc., so you can do a lot of different things.

i remember when i was 13 i asked someone to teach me how to paint realistic portraits, like an artist teacher, and they said u have to learn yourself, but then i found this channel, and so now fastword a decade, i am very disappointed that they said this.
this is probably the first tutorial/tip videos i've seen on painting darker skin, and its really good too so thanks!
can you do a video on painting a whole figure?? I know you do faces, but how would one stick that on a body
This video is so useful! I rewatch it every time I paint a face just as a refresher. Thank you for the helpful video, you’re very talented!
I HAVE A GREAT IDEA! why not make a palette on glass and put the glass on top of a reference for colours. So just print the reference 2 times: one for colours and one for the whole picture.😂❤

Cool idea!! I totally want to try that now!
ahhhh! Great idea!
People do use glass palettes if they’re rich lol
This is a stand out painting video. As a beginner, my mixes often end up pink or green. You explained how to use the blues and reds to make the pink more like skin and how to use the opposite colour to green (red) on a colour wheel to lighten up the green. thanks for your real life help.

wow young lady. After all the skin tone videos i,ve sat through finally came to the most comprehensive
and informative one. Many thanks
Fantastic! A proper use of acrylics and oils.
Apparently I'm using your techniques in digital painting and it is much much more easier now to color blend. Thanks for this!!
this was soooo helpful. i'm so glad you did both skin times
Oh god I desperately needed all of this. Hyped for the hair painting.
Watching your videos got me full marks on my ART GCSE's thank you so much.
This is the most helpful tutorial I've ever seen, thank you so much omg
This helped me so much. Even though I'm not aiming for photorealistic paintings I love to paint people and for that a great skintone is a must. Thank you 😘
Fantastic job!! Skin tones are some of the hardest to replicate..
Great! I never thought of starting the painting with acrylic before the oils. That is cool. Thank you for the tip!
Thank you for your help! Beautiful portraits by the way!👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
You're amazing! such a deep grasp of the importance of the location of highlights and shadows. Thanks for the tips!
i love these videos, they're making me less scared to try out oil painting
That was actually really helpful, despite the fact that I don't paint faces, I think it's gonna help me with my colored pencil portraits! ♥
It is amazing the way you hold the brush, i love it, also.
Your explanation for glazing just saved my grade in art 😭🙏🏽🙏🏽
so young so talented, i dont know hows that possible
it's always nice to receive good advice. thank you for your time and expertise
Wow amazing I’m learning all about mixing colours and working on skin tones, great tutorial I’m an artist myself but love that I can learn off RUclips and talented people. Thank you for your help 👍
I know nothing about painting but watched this anyway. Terrific talent and presentation!

Thank you thank you thank you
For demonstrating dark skin tones too.
such clear explanations and great paintings, thank you!
Very informative ! So much talent in one video . 😊🎨
Such a helpful tutorial! Such amazing paintings also.
amazing :) both entertaining and educational
side notes:
>at 5:02, i now understand why and how artists use pints of paint and create a masterpiece ( i don't actually have no idea about how acrylic paint works and how small amounts of paint would be enough for a finished painting)
>I like how she holds the brush that way (I tried to do the same with my pencil, and it was quite fun :D )
AWESOME! Never thought of using both acrylic and oil together! It’s been quite a while for me having oil and acrylic paint, so today I thought of buying either. I had a hard time choosing between the two, but now I know I should have bought both!
Super awesome mixing. Thanks!
Also Thank you for showing your complete colour pallet xx
Thanks so much for doing my man Morgan with oil paints I have some and have such a hard time with them in fact they came in a large set and I tried adding water and it was super clumpy and didn't mix but just from you in depth explanations I know what to do with them and the skins so thank you so much!!
thank you, you're vids help me sooooooo much when i paint
