Toyota should’ve kept cranking these amazing machines out for another 5-6 years. Just an interior update would’ve been marvelous. This generation of 4Runner is such a badass suv
Your descripting of it feeling like a "best friend" is very appropriate. This is your best review EVER! Everything you describe about the 4Runner is spot on. Get it while you can and don't regret it. If I could afford it, I would buy 7 of these, drive a different one every day just to keep them in running order, and have a reliable apocalypse car until I die.
The best SUV on the market. No fake engine noise, no carbon build up, no plastic valve covers, no direct injections, no turbo, no overcomplicated engine mess, phenomenal looks, rides like a tank feels like a tank, hydraulic steering, solid plastic parts in the cabin. 500K-1M capable engine and bulletproof transmission. Real 4X4 SUV. Only issues I can think of this is lack of proper luxury for money vs Mazda, Honda, Kia and Frame rust if you live in Northeastern part of North America. Toyota's legacy, the last of it's kind. Toyota's one of the most legendary engines 1GR-FE, 2GR-FKS lives in ES and IS of Lexus only now Camry died. Get it while you can they are still there, SR5 Premium or TRD Off Road Premium are best trims. Limited is not good on front looks, inside is good but that X-REAS is not great vs Nothing (SR5 P) or KDSS (ORP). As always great review !!
Do any 5th gen 4runners have that engine in them? What do you think the longevity of the new 2025 4runner engine and transmission will be?? Great info in the comment
Only thing I'd change about your comment is the fact that the Off Road Premium does NOT come with KDSS. It has bilsteins from the factory with KDSS as a *super uncommon* factory option.
I don't think they can all go half a million to one million miles. The typical mileage is 12,000-15,000 a year and the only reason some see high mileage, is easy highway miles. Pretty much any engine and transmission can go that long if you do boatloads of easy highway miles.
@@CharliePrice. 2GR-FKS is a good engine but it is NOT superior to the 1GR-FE in the 4Runner, the 2GR is more of a like modern engine, it has Direct and Port injection system plus the valve cover is plastic, it is used in ES/Camry as a 305HP variant with normal gas and Lexus IS 350 has it with premium gas only at 311HP. And 1GR-FE is 4L engine while 2GR is 3.5L, plus the torque and HP is very low on the 4Runner and that's a good thing because the Cylinders are never stressed even if you rev it to 5K RPM, valve cover is also aluminum in the 1GR-FE making it more solid and there's no direct injection system making it less complicated, and the old systems in the 4Runner with the chassis aka Frame and the electronic components are very good plus tried and tested for 15 years. This engine is not performance focused unlike the 2GR-FKS but it's very reliable. The powertrain in the newer 4Runner 2025 is a 4Cyl engine (T24A-FTS) with both port and direct injection systems, plastic valve cover, the Transmission and Engine will have an Electric motor component fused in between them, that is my concern because the electric motor sandwiched in between with a Lithium Ion battery power driven is not my cup of tea. Plus the 4Cyl is a Turbo engine on top, more complications. The transmission is made by Aisin corp for all Toyota cars they should be decent but the 5-Spd in the 4Runner is legendary for it's durability. I test drove a Mazda CX90, CX5 & Kia Telluride. The mechanical components in them are not up to the mark. KIA/Hyundai engines have Direct Injection only, means carbon build up is inevitable which will cause valves to gunk up and lose performance AND compression ratio of cylinders. The underside of the car has weak tiny lower control arms in the rear too same for Palisade Hyundai cuts cost in mechanicals while Toyota does it in Infotainment etc. 4Runner has solid axle which is far more durable. Mazda CX5 is garbage, trash engine sound and horrible feeling inside the cockpit plus weak engine and tiny car poor dealership has a ton of cars many people buy without knowledge as they told a ton this year but in reality ? The 4Runner destroys both in comfort and visibility only thing it will lose is luxury and modern tech. Also Honda engines V6 ones have VCM, Cylinder Management like GM's AFM, Fuel Management they disable cylinders along with auto start/stop those things destroy the compression ratio for engines and also cylinder walls get worn out once that is done the block is going to kill itself sooner or later won't last 10 years+. Absolute junk POS technology, so I avoided Honda altogether despite being high in the consumer space for reliability and features. All in all, that's my take. I researched a lot and spent more time than my career on cars, but in the end I'm at-least knowledgeable in this dept. My advice ? Just sacrifice a bit of luxury (speakers, leather trims, advanced tech, other gimmicks etc and unfortunately mileage is bad but not worse) and go for the 4Runner you won't regret it, the Hydraulic steering is superb, yes it will put some strain on your arms BUT the feedback is excellent it's on par with a Lexus IS or RC class due to it's precision of true Hydraulic system.
With all that’s happened with the new gen Tundras and Tacomas I put my chips down on a new 2024 4Runner and couldn’t feel better. I know this platform can be a slug but I also know it will always get me there and back for many, many miles! 😉
Can’t go wrong with this generation 4Runner. Solidly-built and will last forever. If you want on-road performance you’ll need to look elsewhere. For leisurely driving, they do fine.
Last year, I bought a new SR5, and drove it to Malibu. Did a great job on the highway 23 MPG, quiet, smooth, bank-vault solid, no problems It was around town where it just isn't good enough to be a daily. It's slow, clumsy and gets 15 MPG Traded it for a Tucson Hybrid, which was exactly what I needed as a daily
Rugged yet stylish. Good for the off-road trail and for nights out with the wife. Versatile rig made by a trusted brand. What's not to like about these? Great review Joe and Steven.
Definitely this model over the new!! Got a 24 TRD off road premium 4 months ago, I actually did not absolutely need this vehicle, but once I learned this is the last year for the proven reliability, along with simplicity, I decided to purchase one, glad I did!! I really like it. The 25 models are going to be more money, sounds like fuel economy won't be much better & who knows about the new drivetrain.
I’ve looked at everything, from Bronco to Grenadier to Defender. I found a 2023 ORP in Lunar Rock. I love it. Solid quality and all the tech and perks you reasonably need. Will last long after all these hybrid and overstressed 4cyl’s die.
Man oh man, nothing beats a 4Runner when it comes to SUV’S!! My momdukes had a 2000 limited in this exact color. Man talk about a dope ass ride, not to mention how clutch it was to have the option to lay down the backseats and throw a sleeping bag down….then it morphed to the shagging wagon!! lol
Thanks Steven flood for the videography! Joe, I chuckled at the thought of this 4Runner’s previous owner trading it in for a jaguar. 😅 thanks for the great content and enthusiasm.
Tried & True! It doesn't get any better. These new Tacoma's & Tunda's just aren't cutting it especially with engine & transmission issues. No thanks!!!
Joe! Tell me that Nissan doesn't have a golden opportunity here? We know the Frontier is doing well and beats the Tacoma in price and value. Thankfully they updated the tech for 2025. But if they bring back the Xterra, drop a nice V6, I think it can take the fight to the 2025 turbo hybrids 4 cyl 4Runner and take the throne!
I'm glad i spotted you, i like your presentation, full of enthusiasm. My husband is leaving it up to me to pick a 2024 suv and it's mind boggling. I'm looking for a suv with high ground clearance, that's important to me. My needs are simple, just to take my grandkids for ice cream and the park, would this model be suitable for us, and is it necessary for me to select a 6 cylinder engine aren't those gas guzzlers. Looking forward to your guidance, i sure can use it. Thanks, take care. Annie.
The reserved and tried and true platform make this attractive to me. When I researched cars, part of my criteria was I wanted a reliable platform (something that doesn't appear in message boards full of horror breakdown , repair, and recall stories) with a frame, and no flags like 'don't park it in your garage because it may start on fire'. This vehicle should be good for 300K miles easy. (and its not under powered) Less electronics is more in my book. Interesting I haven't seen a trace of the '25 model yet. No hybrid gimmicks either. This may be the last traditional ICE vehicle with all of these attributes. Drive on!
Another awesome review, Joe! I "almost" bought an Outback - was looking at the 24's and 24's. Came home with a 2024 SR5 Premium 4WD 4Runner instead. I can't get the smile off my face!
Love, love the 4Runners and their reliability. But once you get inside, that’s where it loses me. I bought a new Lunar Rock 2023 4Runner TRD ORP in September 2023. I knew this was going to be the last NA generation for this vehicle. I love everything about it. It could stand a bit more power, but I'm OK with it. I wish they still offered it in a V8.
