Never used a Ronnie. Have viewed multiple vidz on the rig, and all turnout the same, one maybe 2 attempts at takes by fish, always one spits rig out, abd somehow one gets hooked. I suppose this could happen with any rig, on even given day, dull hooks, etc..That said I use the KD rig, mostly critically balanced, sometimes popped up, sometimes on bottom. My hookup rate was off the charts. Here in the U.S.A., we do not fish heavily pressured waters, nor small ponds with stocked fish, so any rig works to some degree. For me basic hair rig, KD rig, and job done. PB 34 lbs Common on a critically balanced KD. Had a whole pack of Ronnies made up and ready, after watching the other vidz, I dismantled all but 6. Just in case I ever decide to try them. Great vid. Cheers.
I've had good success with the ronnie rig recently, fished it mostly as a single hookbait or over weed/debris. From the video it is obvious that on a clear bottom, a bottombait or wafter is going to be the better option, especially when fishing over a pre-baited area with particles and whole boilies.
To all the idiots saying that all the fish ignored the bait, you failed to see that he literally caught the biggest fish out of the whole bunch, he's not interested in 2-4 kg carp, look at how big the bait is.
The bottom baits will catch more fish but the pop ups tend to catch bigger fish. I’ve tested this theory many times on lakes which are stacked with carp (match lakes for example) where you can catch all day long on the bottom baits, but when you put a pop up on the bites dry up and you may only catch a few in a day but they always seem to be a bigger quality of fish on average. Similar to when you decide to use a bigger hook-bait to ward off nuisance fish. Theres a time and a place for both, the pop up looked nice and clear for the footage tho as did the rig flying into the fish’s mouth. Nailed it! Nice work. 👍🏻
Don't fish a pop-up amongst particles. Carp feed differently when there is particles. You would have had a quicker take with a bottom bait rig or if you were fishing over boilies.
What I took away from this particular video is that the free offerings where alot more attractive that the presented pop up, which wasn't even looked at until they cleared the baited area, match the hook bait with the free offerings looks alot more effective
After a 40 year break I have just returned to fishing with a vengeance and have been shocked at the proliferation of rigs, hooks, advice blah, blah blah - the only link between them all being 'you must buy more gear at an extortionate price. All those little bits and pieces add up to £££££s! I went out carp fishing on a simple hair rig with pellets and bang - carp after carp (admittedly some annoying silver fish also!). The amount of 'advice' is now deafening. On a more esoteric point - what would be the fun in pulling out 20+ carp in a session every session? Surely that would be boring? Fishing for me is about the 'process' and not simply pulling fish after fish out of the water. The days I catch nothing simply add to the days that I catch something! I would really suggest that people get back to what fishing is really about. Enjoy it.
Its only deafening if you listen to it. Its only expensive if you buy it. Having more options and individuals interested in the sport is not a bad thing. I'm more exhausted by the sentiment peddled by old hats like you, than by any of the industry.
I started back after a 15 year break last month, ive been twice and only used cheese n sweet corn on a float.. took 20 minutes to bag a 17lb mirror as my first in all that time.. no special rigs, just a hook, float n bait.
Chuck that rig in the bin only reason it was picked up was because there was hardly anything else left on the bottom plus a bream picked it up and it never set the hook
A bottom bait or wafter suits that lake bed far better imo, if your a Ronnie fan which I am to try it with a wide gape and a size 11 swivel can get the bait far closer to lake bed therefore not as suspect , that's why your bait got left till literally last
Would of been better using a Ronnie Rig over a lakebed that would be more suited for a Ronnie Rig. Getting a drop like that would be far better suited to a bottom bait/wafter. Stands out like a sore thumb. Maybe re-try filming it over a more choddier, low lying weed type scenario where it is more suited.
Fish eating all the particles, but ignoring the big focal point bait until everything else is gone. The hooked carp nailed it on instinct as there were no more free offerings. Carp know they'll get hooked if they eat something 15mm, round, 2 inch off the bottom.
Really interesting that until the end of the video no carp even looked at that hook bait, a bream tried and spat it out then finally along came a carp and got nailed, goes to show in some circumstances you should match the free offerings and bottom bait too.
@@faithcarptackle Dont use this rig unless you dont want to catch carp and just want to watch them swim around your bait. Just rest it on the bottom on a hair rig, its not hard and does not need to be fancy or complicated. This is coming from a multiple Ontario award winner for carp. Take my word for it.
Fish in general graze like cows and sheep and eventually they pick up the hook bait , what happens then is what you should be more concerned about if they get off and you missed you chance ?
Obviously took the pop up as there cleared the bottom baits.....deffo would of used bottom bait or wafter in this situation.but we cant always see or whats going on under water.
I would never fish that rig on such a clear area, even the bream were sussing it out.....a German rig or plain old bottom bait on a hair would have gotten one much quicker...thats my opinion for what it worth
Just to see the carp response, see this shot more as a study than a technique. I wanted to see how the carp would react to a pop-up in this situation. of course a different rig would have been a good choice. but still I caught fish within 15 minutes. Very educational if you ask me.
People fish like this. I’ve been guilty of it. You never know if anything is completely clean. It’s always the thought of if there is any weed your still fishing. I’ll be changing the way I fish that’s for sure
By the looks of it a Tiger or Bottom bait on a KD rig would have gotten a take much much faster than this Ronnie. I have only used a Ronnie a handful of times and my only decent fish came in Winter on a 15mm pink Almond pop up on a Ronnie. Fished with a 1.5” PVA mesh bag of crumbed boilie. To be fair it felt good to nail one dead of winter when nothing else was working.
Throw that rig and all ye pop ups in the bin if your fishing solid bottoms like that 👍👌 looks like the rig failed on the carp too spat it straight back out
I’ve not used a Ronnie a lot but most people say to use a size 4 hook I’ve had screamers and hit into nothing using size 8 hooks and a 12mm pop up I’ve seen another lad have 8 runs and loose all of them on a size 6 hook
All we learned from this is that out of desperation and once all other bait had been eaten, they took your rig. Think I’ll give your rig a miss thanks.
The way I was taught back in the 60’s has always served me well. If a carp can feel ANY steel in the bait they’ll spit it out. Always cover the hook 100% with the bait and then add a little more for erosion from being under water.
Don't think this rig was necessary tbh . Couple tigers on a simple hair would of worked better in this situation . Idear of a pop up is to sit bait higher above weeds . But hardly any weed here . The rig is brilliant but not in this situation .
Why the bloody hell would you use a Ronnie on a bottom like this. It's very evident that the fish are aware of this rig by feeding all around and leaving it til last. May aswell stuck a great big red flashing light on top.
They ate everything on the bottom first......brilliant rig that
Haha just what I was thinking id rather have had a dark bottom bait on than that bright pop up
You're right but it still caught, not a fan of pop ups myself, be interesting to see this rig lying on the bottom 🤔
Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't
@tomshaw5126 🤣🤣🤣 That's exactly why I go fishing - catching really sounds no fun at all 🎣🎣
I’m thinking a bottom bait would have do a bite faster.

you should of used a tiger nut from that footage..
To all the idiots saying that all the fish ignored the bait, you failed to see that he literally caught the biggest fish out of the whole bunch, he's not interested in 2-4 kg carp, look at how big the bait is.
After watching countless pop up rig videos, I am convinced that bottom baits are way better
Spot on, in that situation a single tiger would of been better.
I personally fink a carp could tie a Ronnie rig by now it’s all they see 👀.
That's why I always get the nice breams hooked during the first hours 🤔

Agreed, it looked so obvious. This is why I tend to fish pop ups only if I have to over weed or rubbish on the bottom or as a single to showing fish.
@@chestersouth601 I’m using sunflower seeds feeding bricks and pop up mounted on hook
Absolutely true. Ideally to use sunflower oil smell brisk and hook with pop up
Everytime at Sea If nothing Happens I watch this video and I get a Run
Fish spat the hook 1:57
Wafter on slip d would off been my approach
How many times have I seen in the video that the carp eats everything around except for the nozzle ... as he knows!
Very educational video! thanks! Greetings from Moldova

Last bait left they where well suspicious picking up lose bait from around it an leaving the rig till there was not think left
Last thing to be picked up 🤣🤣🤣….how very efficient

How come you say that is an effective rig...tons and tons of fishes is down there and it takes like an hour.
You don't really want any of those bream to take your rig trust me 😂
Always thought the ronnie was a good rig until watching this and just seeing them all ignore it . May go back to a water even for the silt now
The rig was presented badly and on a clear lake bed and it still caught a nice size carp
Cutting the ring off and crimping a loop on in place makes it sit lower and alot less blatant...

It just looks wrong with all the free bait on the lake bed , we bait up with bait that sits on the lake bed so that's were you hook bait should be .
That spot is so clear... why fish something popped up and obviously a hook bait.

Not the right use on that bed for a ronnie, I only fish them over deep silt or weed. Critical d rig or straight bottom hair for that lake bed.
Vang je nu dankzij of ondanks?
Ik geloof... ondanks
Moeilijk te zeggen. In deze situatie misschien ondanks, is sommige andere situaties dankzij, denk aan wateren met meer wier etc.
