  • The Bombardier Light Rapid Comfortable is best known for its operation with VIA rail in Canada. But did you know that Amtrak also planned to operate the trainset as well and did operate it for two years. Well that's what this video is all about.

    I really like the LRC. I feel like they ran faster than the current equipment that is used. Their K3L horn were also killer too.

      They look very different but had an extremely similar design, goals and capabilities.

    Ah yes the LRCs I find them really nice some of my favorite non electrified locomotives, they were also very useful engines for sure.

      They definitely are one of the most high speed focused non electrified train the country has seen

      They were equivalent to the British Rail InterCity 125 in the 70s: wedge shaped diesel locomotives with a 125 MPH top speed on conventional track.

    Great episode! I never knew that Amtrak got the LRC before Via. It's a shame they opted for cheaper options instead of fixing their own tracks (or working with freight railroads to improve track conditions)

      Yeah but honestly it wouldn’t have changed much. The only real difference between the LRC and turboliner was that the LRC could tilt. But this system was so problematic that the transits rarely tilted removing the primary difference.

    As a kid, the lakeshore east corridor ran behind my house in Toronto. I'd see these everyday. One time me n my dumb buddies put a blue water barrel on the tracks and it got stuck under a LRC, it went into emergency stop n we ran away like a bunch of wussies. I thought it would bounce away, but no, it made a God awful racket underneath getting tore up on the ties. Good times

    Bombardier / Montreal Locomotive Works was a licensee of ALCO engine designs, and they poured copicious amount of smoke when accelerating. All were retired by 2001. The LRC passenger cars still remain the backbone of Ontario / Quebec services. Over a decade ago, a program was started to rebuild the cars, but was halted at the amount of detioration discovered. Coupled with other structual problems with P42 Genesis engines, VIA decided to order all new Siemens Charger engines and cars. The first set is under test here and will gradually replace all equipment in Ont/Que corridor service: LRC cars, corridor Renaissance (British Chunnel Nightstar sets), and HEP-II (heavily rebuilt 40's/50's Budd stainless coaches).

    The LRC cars are still operating for VIA Rail Canada. Cars only, not LRC motive power, but EMD F40PH-2 & General Electric Genesis P42DC locomotives, as with Amtrak. Amtrak, like the narrator said, doesn't operate any LRC equipment. One day, I would like to travel on Amtrak, from Moynihan-Penn Station in NYC, to Boston-South Station. I wanna see two landmarks there: the Custom House Tower and McKinley Square, where it sits.

    The 10 coaches / 2 locos were not compatible with the subsequent LRCs built for VIA in 1981/82. The two unique "cafe coaches" (windowless section as can be seen in the thumbnail photo) were not repeated for VIA. The original sets were used on the Toronto / Chicago "international" in the 80s/90s until replaced by Superliner. VIA had announced it "has not budgeted the amount it would take to make them compatible" with other LRC cars, which numbered 100, as so parked the two prototype sets. They perhaps have already been scrapped.

    2:34 at the time the non electrified portion of the NEC was from New Haven to Boston, not NYC to Boston.

    You realize most of your route narrative is incorrect? The LRC ran on the Boston-New Haven shoreline and not the Pacific NW. If you note almost all the Amtrak LRC photos are at New Haven CT as well as New London CT.

      Well it failed with Amtrak but became a symbol for via rail
