Thank you so much for this recipe, Stacey. Due to medications she is taking, my wife has developed a plethora of allergies late in life (may God destroy the pharmaceutical industry), and tomato is one of them. Every second Sunday, she makes the best pizza the world has ever known, but she was no longer able to eat her own sauce. She tried a variety of pestos, which were okay but just not the same. We tried this tonight and it will be our standard from now on. Way to go!
This makes me so happy to read!!!! So glad you all liked it😊💖💖
Fish sauce is very underutilized in AIP! If you get the Red Boat brand it only contains anchovies and salt and is so useful for adding flavor to dishes. This was very tasty btw! 😍
Just made this sauce. It is literally "awesome sauce"! Haven't had marinara in nearly a decade because of a tomato allergy. Nice to have this one in my recipe book now. It is one of those recipes to start earlier in the day as the whole meal, the spaghetti and the sauce took a few hours to prepare from end to end. Sat down to my first spaghetti meal in many years at nearly midnight, but it was *so* worth it! Thanks!
I've never encountered a "no-mato" sauce recipe before! I'm amazed. The creativity and the effort encapsulated into this recipe is just awe inspiring. Thank you so much for sharing.
Thank you so much!!! I wish I could take credit for creating the idea to make tomato sauce out of root veggies, I just researched a bunch of other recipes and came up with my own version😁
I haven't had tomato sauce in 5 years! Can't wait to try this! Thank you for posting!!!!!
Btw ... we North Indians use dry mango powder made from unripe, very green mangoes ... to add a hint of sourness ... inexpensive, convenient - a little goes a long way ... easily available in Indian grocery stores. It's called 'amchoor'.
❤
I have missed tomato sauce so much. This makes me happy! Your joy in experimentation is infectious! BIG thanks.
HaggisVitae Thank YOU! Comments like yours make it worth all the time and effort! 😊
Omg I was winging it when I searched tomato free sauce. I had no idea about AIP!! Thank you so much. A glimmer of hope is all I needed
Tried making this for my mom and she loved it! And so did my sister :) they said it tasted just like tomato! Thank you so much
Stacey! My family and I made this together and COULD NOT BELIEVE how perfect you were able to get these flavours!!! Had it over zucchini noodles, and all of us were smiling with every bite! Soooo nice to have those classic Italian flavours again - I am absolutely in love with your recipes :DD

As a half-Italian who is in love with all things sauce, I thank you. Looking forward to trying this out!

I was so skeptical but made it and it's delicious! But nothing will ever replace raw, organic, fresh picked tomatoes =) But when I tasted it, I also thought I'd have an allergic reaction! But of course didn't.

This recipe is really good! So happy to have something that tastes like tomato sauce. I've only been on AIP for 5 weeks and your recipes are a godsend. I just wanted to take a moment and THANK YOU for your outstanding collection of videos. Your upbeat and positive personality really help me understand that AIP is DOABLE!! Thank you for taking the time to share what you're doing and how you're doing it. Seriously, I appreciate it. I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease (undifferentiated connective tissue disease) about ten days ago. My doctor believes that my pregnancy (at age 45) triggered my immune system. Although I tested negative in all labs for the common AI diseases and I'm feeling good, I've decided to take a med (plaquenil) to prevent further damage to my body. My ANA lab result doubled in the past 6 months, so something is going on in my body. I also started eating a paleo diet (mostly AIP, but I haven't been able to stop eating nuts!) Anyway, for someone like me who is just at the start of the AIP journey, your videos are AMAZING. So THANKS!!
You totally made my day with your nice comments! I'm so glad my videos are helpful to you, makes it worth every bit of time and effort to make them. Thank YOU!!!😊💕💕💕
I came across this the other day after recently finding out I’m allergic to tomatoes. I made it tonight and it was really good, very close to tomato sauce! I didn’t even add tamarind because I didn’t have any. Thank you!
I’m so glad you liked it!😊
Great humor (: Looks yum!
I knew I would find the answer a lot faster than googling. I was thinking of just using squash or pumpkin for marinara sauce. It would have the red color and even thiugh I use beets, I dont really ise it besides juicing or steaming. Anyway I and really HAPPY iyour video was one of the first videos to pop up. Love the tip of using tamarind powder for it to tast like tomatoe sauce. Learned a couple new tips, thanks to you.

I was so happy to hear about the tamarind. I didn't know about it and added it to my husband's nomato sauce and it seems to be the missing ingredient. I let him sample and he smiled. Thank you.
Awww, I'm so happy to hear that!!! I'm glad he liked the sauce😊 Tamarind is one of my favorite AIP flavor ingredients!
@@RealWorldAIP I just made this for dinner tonight adding Beyond sausages to the sauce when I warmed it up. Oh my gosh! It was delicious. Admittedly, I added other ingredients not in your recipe....but we all make it our own, right? My husband loved it and it was very filling. I have tried so many different nomato recipes and he never liked them....this fit the bill. He was happy camper at dinner tonight and I was a happy wife. He can't have tomatoes because of Chronic Kidney disease. I have him eating a mostly vegan diet with minimal meat/fish once in a while and he has been sticking to it. He went from the end stage 3 kidney disease to the end of stage 2 or beginning stage 3 however you look at it....all from diet and exercise. They said that kidney disease cannot be reversed....not true. But he missed tomato sauce and you saved the day...thank you!

Thank you for sharing your recipes
Thank you so much!!!💖
Thanks for sharing your recipe! I never thought about tamarind instead of capers, so that's a great tip! I make something very similar, but in the InstantPot. Use the saute' function to carmelize the onions and garlic, then add all the veggies into the pot and cook for about 20 minutes at pressure. Let it release pressure naturally, and add the additional seasonings. Then use a stick blender to puree it all in the same pot. You can put it back on saute after that if needed to adjust seasonings or cook down a little liquid. This saves a lot of time and dishes. :)
Alison Foster Davis I like that idea a lot!!! The less dishes used the better, thank you!! :)
Thanks! Amazing "Nomato"-sauce. Taste just like tomato.
Yay!!! I'm so glad you like it!!😊💖
I am a super picky eater. Make this nomato sauce! I eat it every single week, and you'll be glad you tried it. We love marinara so I use roasted veggies in mine, you can really change up the flavors depending on your needs. It really tastes like marina.

How long can the nomatoe stay bottled….refrigerated?

This looks so good and I wanna do it but I've been noticing citrus is causing my eczema to flare up, do you think we could leave out the lemon and tamarind since both are citrus? Could we replace them or it's best to just leave out?
Holy cow!! I made this tonight being the biggest sceptic because I loathe pumpkin and beets....this sauce is fantastic! I paired it with gluten free spaghetti noodles and nearly cried because I haven't had spaghetti in months that I wasn't in extreme pain. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!!!

@@Nazareth434 papaya makes a great tomato substitute in sandwiches or salads!!!
@@RealWorldAIP ?? The tastes are so dissimilar?
@@Nazareth434 papayas are disappointingly unsweet for a fruit. They have same water content, similar texture. They are really great in a salad or sliced thin in a roll up or sandwich. You can marinate them with balsamic and olive oil to make them more tomatoey. Get one that’s just barely ripe.
This sauce looks just like marinara. I can’t have any acidity because I have IC. I will however try the tamarind! Thanks so much for the recipe

@@RealWorldAIP i have i made it without the beets as its hard to get them at this time of the year but without them was delicious and i am not on the aip diet but i have thousand of allergies like no yeast no sugar dairy , onion and so much more.
I'm so glad you liked it!! The beets are just in there for color, they aren't essential. I feel your pain, I'm intolerant of all kinds of foods, even within AIP, just makes cooking a bit more of a creative endeavor😁
Thank you for the recipe. What can I use instead of vinegar? Anything acidic is a no no for me due to serious digestive problems.
Vinegar, red wine or lemon juice would all do the same thing in the recipe, but if you are unable to tolerate any of those then I would just skip that ingredient. It won't ruin the sauce, it just won't be quite as authentically tomatoey.
Raw Apple cider vinegar is the only vinegar that is alkaline-forming to the body. All other vinegars (white, balsamic, red wine, etc) are acid-forming. Hope this helps!
Using tart cherries.and balsamic vinegar and the usual is tasty also.
@RealWorldAIP ThankYou 4 this vid Can’t wait to try- craving it as a soup, lol
U so pretty n precious also like ur voice 🌸
Thank you so much!!!😊💕
My daughter and I are doing aip together and we tried this.
Omg... tastes so much like tomato we may just get used to it and never be tempted to take a chance on tomato sauce again.
Perfect substitute.
The tamarind was a good call. It does provide that special tartness and something of a taste that brings the whole sauce closer to tomato. I tried it before I added the tamarind and after. Amazing what difference it makes.
You can use the sauce for other stuff too.
Like cabbage rolls!
Since we aip people don't do rice, I just do a mix of hamburger and ground chicken or turkey, or mix the meats however you like.
Add finely diced raw carrot, raw cauliflower rice and grated onion and minced flat leaf parsley, a little of the sauce, a little bit of sea salt then mix the meat mixture well and take a tablespoon and a half or 2 of the meat and shape it like a cigar shape then roll it up in your cabbage leaves that you will have already lightly pre- steamed till the leaves are soft enough to roll but not tear. You can put a tooth pick in each one to hold the leaves closed while they cook.
We use a little of our homemade bone broth in the bottom of the glass casserole dish and mix a little no-mato sauce in it, then spoon extra no- sauce over our cabbage rolls, cover and bake in a 350 degree oven for 35-40 min.
Garnish the tops of the rolls with the flat leaf parsley.
You can also cook them in an instant pot or pressure cooker if you have one. Just follow the recipe and cooking instructions for cabbage rolls that are in the recipe books that come with your instant pot or pressure cooker. (Most do have a for cabbage rolls.) I know that instant pot does one and also the Mirro Pressure cooker has one printed in thier recipe book and has done it for eons.
Bon Apetite AIP friends. It is so good that you won't be sorry you can't have the original recipe. 😘👌🏽

@@RealWorldAIP Thank.you for all the hard work and the ideas you put into this channel.
What you are doing is SO important to people who are suffering with many kinds of health issues.
Food is so healing, but to those of us who have health issues, eating foods that contribute to our suffering on a large scale is literally hell.
I have just researched for for the last several years about how these foods affect our well being and there are so many people who don't even know that what they are eating could be really hurting them and could be s huge stumbling block in their journey to come into a better story of wellbeing and better management of the disorders and diseases.
Even sensitivities and allergies to many foods can make life hell though someone may not have an A.I. disorder or disease.
This diet is important for a better quality of life for so many of us.
Your channel is wonderful and you are so good at what you do. I get more help here than I do with many of the books I have read which many times aren't very creative. Many if them offer very few recipes or meal ideas for better and more palatable substitutes, 'workarounds' and even what things are good to do ahead of time for the freezer or to help you extend the life of these foods through doing certain things a certain way ahead of time for future use.
(Like for example your frozen Trader Joe's berry porrions in the mason jars trick and preparing meats ready to go for the freezer like the meatballs, salmon, lamb etc...)
I really like the way you think and the way you do things. It works for me in real life everyday. You're a good problem solver for so much. For the recipes you have so many good ideas to make things taste so much better in comparison to other recipes.

The perfect recipe for a less acid sauce & easily vegan ! My journey is done ✅
That looks so great. Can I get the recipe off your website? Why no oven? You don’t like them or where you live just doesn’t have one?
I don't have my recipes in print at the moment but at some point I want to! I don't have an oven because there was a gas leak in the oven pipe when my ex and I moved in years and years ago so we unplugged it. Then I had it removed because it was an ancient old oven that came with the house and I thought I'd get a new one...but I have't had a few hundred dollars to invest in it- well, I could probably scrape it up but with all the little gadgets I've accumulated over the years I really don't miss it now lol!
You just saved my life lol
With the olive oil, are you using extra virgin or regular olive oil? I’ve heard/read it is safe to cook with regular olive but not extra virgin.
I'm using extra virgin. There are different schools of thought on cooking with extra virgin olive oil. Some say that the polyphenols in good quality EVOO resist oxidation and are safe to cook with. Mark Sisson says "good quality virgin olive oil with all the phenolics intact, is decently resistant to heat-incurred oxidative damage" in this article: www.marksdailyapple.com/defending-olive-oils-reputation/
Juuuust to be on the safe side I use it for cold applications for the most part unless my recipes really needs that olive oil flavor in it, then I'll cook with it.
What can I use if I am allergic to Pumpkin and beets? Currently on Immuno-Calming diet and I am missing my tomato sauce badly. Thank you!
You could use all carrot but the color will be orange. It'll taste like marinara though. I have a beet/ pumpkin free no-cook marinara sauce in my cookbook that uses cranberry for color, you might want to try that one too, you can find it at realworldaip.com😊
I have no idea what I did wrong. I followed this exactly and my sauce was orange. No where near red. It looked exactly like the pumpkin. I had to add a lot of water at the end and put it in the blender because it just did not turn out like that. It was tasty though. My 8 year old even liked it. I refuse to tell her what's in it though. :)
Easy fix! Add more beets! 😊

I'm sure you have a ton of requests....but when you have some time, can you show me different herbs and spices replacements? Well that opens 2 more spices/herbs I can use again....the yellow mustard was fantastic, I have some separated and frozen. With the celery seed I'm going to try to use that to make some proper pickles...but it got me to thinking about common herbs and spices replacements.
Also, I have a LOT of tarragon that I purchased for a recipe so I'm going to make tarragon infused vinegar....might be tasty for salad dressing...I'm trying to come up with ways to add flavor and switch things out and not trash the extra herbs so I can keep buying fresh for my budget

I pull mine from the freezer the day before I want to use it- it’ll be fine in fridge for 3-5 days. I’m not sure how to pressure can it, no experience there!
Do you ever use pomegranate molasses or can you eat that?
I have not tried it, I don’t eat much sugar in general
@@RealWorldAIP as far as I see on my bottle theres no sugar but if you mean the natural pom juice concentrate sugars then yes. It tastes sour. Found in middle eastern shops
Can u send me the recipe list please
You can find it in print here: www.realworldaip.com/post/aip-nomato-sauce
Is there a written version of this recipe?
I don't have this one in print but I have a simple easy marinara in print on my site, realworldaip.com. There is an option for recipes in print in the drop-down menu ☺
Are capers AIP Friendly?
Yes, as long as there are no additives in the jar like citric acid. Salt packed capers are usually safe.
Next time just try chili powder and achotte powder and maybe some cumin powder but just these ingredients taste just like tomato sauce 😎🤙🏽cooked in water or stock
Sounds delicious but those spices are not AIP compliant. I have successfully reintroduced cumin and love it in everything but cannot tolerate any nightshades so the chili powder is out😔
can this be frozen until later?
Yes! You absolutely can freeze it!😊
@@RealWorldAIP ok thank you so much 😚
another quick question is their a substitute for tamarind? I have gerd and I can't use tamarind because of its side effects.
@@MzCarolyn64 everything I want to suggest will probably also be acidic. Balsamic, capers which are packed in vinegar...so maybe try just skipping it altogether, it should still be a decent sauce, just not quite as tomatoey.
@@RealWorldAIP ok I'll just leave it out. thank you so much 🥰
I found this 9 months ago and still haven't found any tamarind in the store :'( the only stuff i have found was the candied tamarind.
You can get it on Amazon! amzn.to/3thwryQ
Update: one of my best friends just surprised me with some tamarind and turns out it's at my local Asian mart!
This marinara sauce originates from Naples and comes from the Italian word, marinaro, meaning sailor.
“There was a simple one of garlic, oil, and tomatoes called marinara, supposedly because it was made quickly, as soon as the mariners’ wives spotted their husbands returning fishing boats in the distance.”
“Too much garlic! Garlic everywhere,“It makes me want to cry,”
Garlic, you see, is not quite the staple of Italian cuisine Americans think it is. Depending on who you speak to, onions are a controversial ingredient too - and don’t even think of ever combining the two in a single dish.
After all, Americans are messing with their grandma’s grandma’s grandma’s recipes.
I thought I would find the recipe in the comments, or a link to the recipe in the description. Oh well. I noticed that I have to leave the FODMAP elements of the recipe.
It’s printed in my blog and cookbook if you want a print version. There’s also a low fodmap recipe here on RUclips and my blog www.realworldaip.com
I don't understand English very well.. Is there a problem with the tomatoes? Is it harmful to health?
Tomatoes are fine unless you have an allergy or reaction to them!
AAAAAAAH THERE IS A NOMATO SAUCE
I WANT LASAGNA FRICK YEAAAAH
I got you covered for the noodles too😉

Ooooooh! Thank you! 🥰
I'm gonna try this, I can't eat garlic or tomato but I think if I use the fennel it should be ok, if I can find it, I live in western massachusetts in the middle of nowhere, no whole foods or trader joes nearby =(.
Around here, cabbage is considered a rare food.
Oh my goodness, sounds like you are in a food desert! Cabbage being rare made me laugh😂
Where's the written recipe?
I thought i was the only person allergic to tomatoes! Every time i say that to my PC doctor she looks at me funny 😑
Yeah, they don't always get it, lol. Tomatoes are my biggest trigger- even worse than gluten and I have celiac! You're definitely not alone!!💖💖

Two weeks ago I tried my first nomato sauce. My husband and I were both super surprised how much it tasted like an actual tomato sauce (used it for deconstructed cabbage rolls...yum!). But then I tested my blood sugar afterward (I was prediabetic in the past, but keep it in check by watching my carbs). I was so disappointed to see that it jacked my blood glucose up super high! My guess is that it's just too many carby veggies all at once for my body to tolerate. A smaller amount might be tolerable. I'll have to experiment to see. We all have our health challenges...lol.
I was glad to see you using California Olive Ranch for our olive oil. Did you hear how some brands are cutting their oils so they're not 100% pure? I stick with COR myself. www.thefoodjourney.com/fake-olive-oil-avoid-these-brands-and-recognise-when-its-authentic/
And what a nice surprise to find herbs growing in your garden at this time of year!
Paula Wisor Sorry to hear about the Nomato affecting your blood sugar :/ Maybe a recipe with mostly pumpkin or butternut squash and just a token amount of beet for color could work? Hmmm.
I am a big fan of Tom Mueller, he wrote a book about how scandalous the olive oil industry is! I only buy brands he recommends that have a date on them :)
I think my herbs grow in winter because I never weed my garden so they have a nice safe cover of dead twigs and all on top of them, lol!!!
Yes, I'm definitely thinking I want to try tweaking the nomato recipe to see if I can find a "mix" that works for my BG. I haven't heard of Tom Mueller, but after seeing your books, I trust that your sources are good...lol!
And regarding weeds, that's the main reason I DON'T have a garden...lol! We bought our house ten years ago because it has a nice big backyard and I wanted to try some gardening. Still haven't got to it...lol! I'm 56 now and my back isn't great, so the idea of weeding gives me pause. If I ever do it, it'll have to be raised beds, for sure. Hopefully, we'll see some pictures of your garden as it goes along this year....?
Paula Wisor I weeded my garden once last year, because I couldn't find anything, lol! I just grow herbs. Tried veggies but that was a fail. Didn't test the soil and not much grew except radishes and 1 squash. I like herbs because a lot of them come back every year and they're low maintenance. I will take some video of it when everything comes back to life :)
What did you use the sauce for? Maybe that was the problem instead?
