POWERBASS SPEAKERS & DYNAMAT AUDIO MODS INSTALL! | FOCUS RS

  • Multiple audio upgrades for my Focus RS!
It is widely talked about that the sound quality of the Ford Focus MK3 RS (and ST) sound system is quite below par - even when you pay for the upgraded 10 speaker Sony system.
The main complaints are that the overall sound is a bit flat and tinny, missing low end or bass response and in a nutshell is just missing something.
Before getting to the mods, I have to remove the door panels - I show the process for doing both front and rear doors - it wasn't as much hassle as I thought it would be, actually pretty easy!
I remove the stock speakers and tweeters, show a side by side comparison, clean up the inner door area and then proceed with the first mod - Dynamat!
Dynamat is sound deadening that is a super sticky and its purpose is to absorb rogue vibrations / resonance from the metal surfaces of the door - if you give them a tap you will be able to hear the resonance!
These vibrations can detract from our listening experience so using Dynamat is a great solution and is easy to do!
I bought both Dynamat Xtreme and Superlite. I use sheets of Xtreme directly behind the speakers and then use an allocation (half a full size sheet) for each door, cutting to size and getting the best coverage with my allocation. I didn't want to go OTT with the Dynamat and cover every surface entirely as this could add too much weight.
Then I get the Powerbass speakers installed. This kit (2 kits needed to do front and back) features OEM fitment and plugs so they are plug and play so super convenient - no cutting cables, etc!
The new setup in My MK3 Focus RS is a definite improvement and I am happy with it now!
More could be done in the future but the likes of changing the subwoofer is a bit more complicated - should I? Let me know down in the comments!
Dealing with the poor audio setup requires more than just one course of action - it is divided into two areas that will do certain things and will then combine to work together in improving the audio experience in the MK3 Focus RS / ST!
Powerbass say about the OE65C-FD OEM Replacement Component Speaker System:
    - 60 Watts RMS/120 Watts Max
    - Injection Molded PP Cone
    - 10 oz. Magnet
    - Nylon OEM Speaker Adapter
    - 1” Inverted Titanium Dome Tweeter
    - Inline Crossovers
    - Factory Plug and Play Wiring Adapters
    - 4-ohm System Impedance
Dynamat say about Xtreme and Superlite:
Dynamat Xtreme is the highest efficiency energy conversion sound deadener available. Sheet metal resonates creating noise, with Xtreme installed the noise is transformed into silent energy through a process called ‘vibro-acoustic energy conversion’. Dynamat Xtreme is a thin, super sticky butyl rubber bonded to an aluminum alloy skin. It is formulated with our patented Vector™ Chemistry making Dynamat Xtreme the most effective sound control material available. Dynamat Xtreme is very simple to cut and install with simple peel & stick. The butyl rubber and heavy aluminum will stretch and contour better than any other product on the market without tearing. It will conform easily to all surfaces, and the sticky butyl rubber will adhere to a surface and stay in place without any special surface prep, and without leaving any odor or dripping material. Xtreme is so efficient you get remarkable results using upwards of 30% coverage centrally on a panel.
Dynamat SuperLite is a high-efficiency sound damping material used to stop noise and vibration. It is the same sticky butyl rubber Constrain Layer Damper (CLD) as Dynamat Xtreme in a 30% thinner, and lighter form. The thin butyl rubber layer is its own adhesive bonded to a gleaming blue, 2 mils thick aluminum alloy - simply peel off the release liner and apply even pressure to install. As CLDs work better the thicker they are, Dynamat SuperLite is not as effective a sound damper as Dynamat Xtreme, but using patented VECTOR™ Chemistry, SuperLite is still able to outperform other brands of damping material we have independent test results to prove this.

Installed this same kit in a 2016 mustang. It definitely sounds better than the stock speakers, which in my case ended up being literal paper cone woofers with only 2 small pieces of foam surround left. Tweeters sound MUCH better, with a nice shimmer and sparkle, but the woofers still suffer from cone breakup in the upper midrange. Powerbass chose not to use a crossover on the woofers to block high frequencies at the point where the tweeter comes in. This makes stuff like vocals from the Deftones and lots of other music "ring" harshly. The stock speakers suffered from the same problem, so I really can't fault Powerbass, but I would have liked to see some kind of upper limit on on the woofers.
I may end up installing a set of traditional components with speaker adapters if I can't smooth the upper mids out.

Adam - Add FastRings by RoadKill to all the speakers as well - they make a HUGE difference to the amount of sound energy that makes it into the car vs. what gets lost in the door cavity. Also put as much Dynamat as you can possibly manage/reach into all of the doors (the outer skin as wells as the inner frame) and also onto the back of the door trim itself. That also makes a massive improvement. Other places to put Dynamat: The floor under the rear seat squab, the hatch floor and around the spare tyre/subwoofer well and even inside the hatch door. My St rides like a Lexus now I(well not quite lol) after doing all of the above.

Hi Alex, yes still have the speakers in place. I think they are for sure an improvement over stock. I would say that they are still a bit held back by the rest of the Ford setup - the poor subwoofer and lack of EQ options baked into the head unit. In terms of doing the easiest upgrade and maximising what we have, there aren't any better options than these. To take it further, I would still get these speakers - it would be a case of addressing the other weak parts of the system

@@danieliacomi .. Hi mate , please let me know how you get on . I have done a few searches and Audison do 2 ohm speakers but i dont think changing the 4 ohm to 2 ohm will make any difference thats stoping the volume level in the rear , i think it is a software issuse mate . Will you let me know and i will do some more digging too .

    • @karlthomas5856
      @karlthomas5856 3 месяца назад

      Hi Adam .
So the Sony speakers in the front doors are 2 ohm , so you need to replace with 2 ohm . If you put 4 ohm in their place the bass will be halved and will sound like there is too much treable . The rear doors are 4 ohm as are all the tweeters in the car . So the kit you have installed is not for cars with the 10 x speaker Sony upgrade speakers.
The reduced power from the back speakers is a software issue that can be put right at a Ford dealership as it needs to be changed via Forscan to ( 10 speaker system ) instead of (not recognised ) . Which most cars should be already set too but unfortunately are not .
      Cheers .
