- Have you ever noticed that if you use a MATHS channel for one or two things, then you can't always use it for a third thing at the same time? This means that almost any use of a MATHS channel is a WASTE of a MATHS channel! In this video the Make Noise crew comes up with some inventive new ways to waste MATHS channels.

Here's a patch: You'll need a portable battery and a portable speaker. Record your reading of the grocery list into the Morphagene, and place a Splice point at the beginning of each item. Let the Splice loop aloud until you have retrieved the item, then hold Splice & press Rec to cross it off. Repeat until your list is exhausted. Ideally the speaker should be turned as loud as it can go.
Brilliant. You can also have a reel with all possible items, and let a random step sequence decide what you eat today

My favorite trick is soldering patch cables to LEDs, plug those cables in channels 2 and 3, turn up the attenuators and voila! Tiny lamps
You can even plug them into 1 and 4 in cycle mode for stobelights, if you want to waste all 4 channels
Don’t forget to add a load resistor or the LED can burn up. I’m sure you knew that already but comment readers may not be aware.

Good god! I had missed this entirely! This was so therapeutic ;) I love Maths, it was the first module I ever bought. However, now that my system got bigger, I often find myself obsessively postponing to use Maths when building a patch. I always feel like I should save it for later, for something better. Now I know what it is, fear of WASTING! I feel absolutely liberated and ready to split the universe. No more fear!
My favorite way to waste a maths is to use channel 1 as an oscillator with limited tracking and then channel 4 as a low pass filter
oh i never thought I could use Maths for making sound, I always patch it into an oscilloscope for the nice images it creates. Thnx for the tips, I'll try them out!

@@MAKEN0ISEMUSIC and I like using Maths more than Quadrax as it is easier and more intuitive to me. Nothing against Intellijel Quadrax that is a great and powerful function generator as well but Maths speaks to me. Now I need two more Maths for my other cases to make the ultimate modular quadratic equation!

I love Maths and want another one it is that useful and powerful. I make fun drum beats modulating Erbeverb with channels from Maths to give me a nice mix of hi hat and crash tones. Then add kick bass drum made from DPO and sample from Morphagene. No need for expensive eurorack drum and bass modules.
Thank you for speaking the truth! In my system, right next to Maths, I have 2x Function, several attenuvertors, and a bunch of logic modules, just so I don't have to waste a Maths channel. I'm thinking about covering Maths in some sort of resin just to make sure I don't waste it. I can't have the destruction of all those universes on my conscience while I'm trying to build a patch. Bad vibes.
I have been telling myself that the goal is to focus on creating the best possible universe. 🎶
To be honest, that's exactly the reason I ended up never using my Maths. I always had the fear that I waste its potential, that there is something more important to patch later on. So I got logic units, little mixers, dedicated function generators until I didn't used my Maths at all. Option and analysis paralysis go a long way with this module and me.
So better waste a channel than to not use a channel at all.
Totally a missed opportunity if you don’t make a special addition “Newt Grocery List” Maths panel.

Either MATHS, or MATHSESESES. Your choice, but remember all caps when you spell the module name

Would love to add a Function or two to my Maths and create a cascading envelope system patching the Function outputs back into Maths channel ch2 and 3 for interesting summing. For now I just waste 1 and 4 on basic ass triggered envelopes 😭
I put a Function in my shared system.
I’d put a 2nd Function on as well if I could get just 2 more hp in the top row.. I think it would work then. Then moddemix goes to bottom row.
Considering MATHS channels 1 and 4 are a bit different, you can't know beforehand which channel to waste first. Wasting channel with EOR can lead to situation where you need EOR, so you have to unwaste that channel and use the other one (with EOC) and then gain EOR functionality.
For that reason I end up with 3 FUNCTIONs and modDemix instead.
My favourite way to waste FUNCTIONs only channel is to patch EOR to HOLD, hit cycle button and wait until it locks itself with +8V and -8V DC. With -8V at hand the modDemix can act as an attenuverter.

Using MATHS just for the LFOs is a waste of both space and MATHS. Though admittedly the first thing I used it for was a mixer. Back when all I had was a Neutron, Clouds, Ornament & Crime, 2hp Clk and the 4th module I ever bought, MATHS. Really good beginner's setup by the way along with either a Keystep or SQ1 for sequencing.
One of my fav ways to waste MATHS is to use it as an innocent four channel mixer, and then hit the cycle buttons on CH1 and CH4. Some pretty cool distortions and waveshaping guaranteed if you play with the rise and fall. Then add some gates to cycle and the oddness is synced to the rhythm of your patch...

@@MAKEN0ISEMUSIC I extremely often wish Maths had a second mixer in the middle. Still four inputs, but two mixers. Now mine (part of a B&G shared system) has a 4-input attenuverting/cascading mixer sitting next to it. Makes a world of difference
@@jsleeio That's a great idea! There is a DIY project the developer calls "Calculus" that is basically a double Maths (but derived from the ground up from the same Buchla circuitry that inspired Maths). When I get around to building it I think I will add that extra mixing channel.
Maths is even wide ranging at wasting channels!

Main mixer output > MATHS chan 2 in, MATHS sum > output. Set chan 2 encoder exactly (!) to noon. Enjoy the most beautiful sound in the world: silence
