  • Would I buy a Caterham? If you have seen my previous videos it may be a fairly obvious answer... What will I decide to configure at the end of the video?!

As a long term Caterham owner, I am on my second. My first was a Cosworth BDR 25 years ago. At the time it was about as fast as you could get. Racing clutch, dry sumped, light flywheel and two Webber 45's. I loved it but it needed a bit of care and attention. Driving in traffic with a racing clutch is a pain, stop go becomes a trial. I had that car for about eight years and sold it for just shy of my purchase price. I moved on to a K series with around 160 bhp, which I still have. I would easily get 80% of my money back if I sold it tomorrow. They have both been sunny Sunday?occational track day fun cars and I have always had another car for transport. My thoughts? Buy an older used 7, keep it in top condition, save a fortune and let the Koreans or Japanese look after your daily transport.

Minilites, chrome headlamps, tan leather seats and tunnel. The classic look is always good. Bodywork all one colour, I'd go for yellow.
You need a lowered floor if you are above average height.
If you are building your own pack the windscreen wider tube with grease to prevent annoying rattles (seriously, it's really annoying).

All-aluminum 2000cc DOHC four seems the proper engine for a Caterham.

I prefer the 170R for Swiss roads

The 170R is amazing for tight and windy roads, but unfortunately the UK isn't quite as amazing! 😆

These are great cars but I don't understand the price. Why so high for a chassis and parts? Is has none of the stuff a regular car has so you would think it would be a lot cheaper.

Price is caused by exclusivity / brand name, and small market. You can overcome it by building your own lotus just like Colin Chapman ! =)

Volume, or rather the lack of it, is part of the issue. Remember that in order for the vehicle to be registered as new there can be no use of "re-manufactured" components. Try sourcing, say a new Ford Duratec engine (remembering that most are sold without any ancillaries, ecu, etc - not even a front pulley or flywheel), then a new MX-5 gearbox, propshaft, final drive, half-shafts front & rear hubs, uprights discs, calipers, shockers & springs etc, etc. And then there are the instruments, loom, etc.
You can also look at the price of, for example, Morgans and realise that, by comparison the Caterham is cheap.

I suggest when you get serious, you speak to a dealer about your spec and your needs. If you are not tracking this car many times a year, your spec is something that is over priced and will lose a lot of money when you sell it.
Are you going to track it a lot, or will you do a few EU trips? Those larger wheels make no sense for road driving any distances, neither do the seats. Carbon fibre?? why, expensive to replace and looks a bit tacky in my opinion. A black & badge at the front, that no one can see, but bright white and red, dont see much logic there either, but each to their own of course.
61k is horrendous money for a 420. Why not simply pay 40 approx for a 1 2 3 year old. Who cares too too too much about the colour, there are no bad colours, its not a ferrari, that looks sexy, and no girl will realistically have much interest in it, so save the money and get something already made. In addition its about 12 months waiting list, although they are going to a new factory so maybe that will come down.
I just got mine completes, 49k new (before price rises) and it has taken 18 months!!! good luck... 620 is a step jump skip way too far, not a good idea IMO and its a turbo, not the same as NA at all...

The 620 is supercharged, the carbon seats are actually incredibly comfortable and tracked versions lose more than those only used on the road.

180 bhp 620kg or less would be ok for me. Take out passenger seat,
