We had a square D panel fail in the worst way possible. Apparently there was a stripped wire somewhere (I think this happened when we had the house siding changed in 2010) , and in 2015 it eventually made contact with the metal box. Short made the box all sooty, and totally burned up the breaker. Could have easily started a house fire, and this all happened while no one was home (all at work), but luckily at some point the circuit opened and everything stopped. HVAC guy replaced it with a Diversitech pull-disconnect. I like those a lot more than the breakers.
@UCghPskwk8oh_vl9NYfHhiiA That would have to be one hell of a short in order to do such a thing since the contacts are literally removed from the box when you pull it out.
