Last year, I finally got to bring my mom through this whole series for their first time. On top of Tales of Ba Sing Se being enough of its own emotional gut-punch, it was especially poignant watching it with her. At the time, she was still recovering from an absolutely brutal but life-saving cancer surgery that allowed her to survive a very similar kind of throat cancer to that which took Mako Iwamatsu shortly after he recorded the tale of Iroh for this episode. She was already getting emotional at Leaves from the Vine, but after the episode ended I told her what happened to Mako and that broke the dam.
Thankfully, my mom's cancer is now gone and she's close to full health. I had already watched the series before going through it with her, but now, Tales of Ba Sing Se will always have that extra layer of meaning for us. Rest in peace, Mr. Iwamatsu; you are continually missed.

The thing that gets me about Toph's confrontation with those girls is remembering how she was BORN blind. She literally does not know what she looks like, and she has no reference for what is considered attractive and what isn't. You'd think, based on her personality and what she says and how she cares for herself, that she wouldn't really care. She can't see her self, so why should she? But when the girls mock her appearance, you see that the notion that she might not be considered attractive does in fact hold some value to her deep down in her soft, squishy core surrounded by rock. To go your whole life not knowing as fundamental an aspect about yourself as just the way you look, it's understandable how a bit of her bravado might come from her trying to cover up and compensate for this insecurity that she holds down deep inside.
So when Katara comes in and tells her she actually thinks she's genuinely pretty, and Toph can tell she means it, you can see that it actually does make her genuinely happy. That little bit of reassurance that she actually does fit the mold of what people who can see consider to look good. And to have it come from someone whose opinion she actually does hold in esteem makes it all the sweeter.

You may be aware of this, but to rub salt into the wound, the portrait of Lu Ten is based on Mako at a younger age and the inscription translates, "General Iroh, I will see you again when victory is obtained. Your loyal son, Lu Ten." It is speculated that this was the last correspondence between Iroh and his son before Lu Ten's death in the Siege of Ba Sing Se.

The hill where Iroh sets the altar for his son is identical to the hill shown in a flashback at the beginning of Bitter Work. While Tale of Iroh was dedicated to Mako, Tales of Ba Sing Se wasn't the last time we hear Mako's voice. The last time we hear him was "You've got to get out of here! I'll hold them off as long as I can" in Crossroads of Destiny. And while we do hear Mako in Tale of Iroh, according to Greg Baldwin, they had Greg re-record a line from Mako, so one line in Tale of Iroh was Greg's voice. But Iroh singing Leaves from the Vine was all Mako. They knew he was dying, so they wanted to make the tale extra special as his last recording, and he knew he had to sing it even if he wasn't known for singing.
I really like Sokka's tale, not just because it's a fun filler. It really shows how there is a genius behind his silly facade. Everyone there thinks that he is a stupid brute because he is a soldier and makes jokes all of the time, but behind all that he is actually very smart and creative, with the ability to do incredible things such as engineering a submarine based on a whale or, in this case, challenging a haiku master in a rap battle. However, it also shows his need to keep himself levelheaded, as he tends to push his luck and spoil things. We know that his biggest problem is lacking humbleness, and the moments where we see him flourish the most are in fact the moments where he accepts his need for improvement and lets himself be humble.

I kind of like that they put Iroh's story second. It hits a note that most stories about grief don't-that even when you are the most immersed in your grief, even on the birthdays and anniversaries and everything else that brings it closer, life is still going on around you, and won't slow down or become somber for you, and that's a good thing. Through his whole day on his way to remember Lu Ten, Iroh isn't shutting out anyone or anything, partly to honor Lu Ten's memory and his own regrets, but also because that's just who Iroh is, and now we realize that's who Iroh is all the time even as a grieving father.
Then we jump straight into the two goofiest and least consequential tales, and it's sort of a tonal dissonance... but again, that's just how life is. While you're grieving, someone else is having a great day full of crazy energy and shenanigans, and that's good. The meaningful and the meaningless exist side by side all the time.
And then we see Iroh again in Zuko's story, and he's okay, and that's really important. If the episode ended with Iroh weeping for his son, or went straight from that to Momo's story, the audience would be 1) devastated and 2) worried on Iroh's behalf. Instead, we get the closure that Iroh IS okay, still puttering around his tea shop and scheming to help Zuko be a well-rounded and happier person.
I can imagine this episode helping kids (or grownups) who are dealing with their own grief to reckon with the way the world keeps moving, and most people around them are having a pretty normal day and some of them are even having a fantastic, silly day, and none of that is wrong for happening while they're sad and their life is falling apart; and it's also not wrong for them to engage with life and with other people fully. "Life happens wherever you are"-that was said just one episode ago, by a grieving father newly arrived in the city where his son died.

I agree that I think the Tale of Iroh should've been closer to the end cause you can't have us be crying along with Iroh as he mourns his son not to mention his song being the last thing Mako recorded and then go straight to the more upbeat Tale of Aang! 😭 I can't decide if Iroh's story should've been before Momo's or after cause both are quite sad but both also would be fitting as the final tale of the episode.

The arrangement of the Tales is perfect. They give you a quick little ride with Katara and Toph...then they inspire you and devastate you with Iroh.
And then they have to spend all the rest of the Tales helping you recover from being crushed by the ending of Iroh's tale.
If they'd done it any other way, the shock of Iroh's story being first would just stop everyone from watching the rest. Or if it were too close to the end, everyone would finish the episode on a sour note.

Always related most to Zuko, as cliche as that may be, but my father is a terrible person and it took me the longest time to come to grips with that.
Until I realized that, too, I wasn't a good person either, but seeing Zuko overcome his terrible circumstances and environment helped me do the same. It was both relatable and genuinely inspiring.
This show came out at the perfect age for me because it taught me how to control my anger and let go of hatred.
Also Zuko's got a sick emo look, badass scar, and shoots fire, but that's all bonus points, really.

Lu Teng's death is what changed radically Iroh. If he were still alive Ozai wouldn't ask Azulon to took Iroh's birthright and Iroh would have become Fire Lord 😨

3:15 Toph is very reluctant to allow anyone else to touch her feet, probably because insensitive handling there would make her deaf to other vibrations and thereby render her helpless (and because they are far more sensitive than other people's feet).

What I always love about Iroh's story, among MANY things, is we see Iroh as a father figure throughout the story, and get a sense of how he was as a father at different stages in a child's life. He first consoles a small child, then with older children he teaches the importance of responsibility (or rather how to avoid trouble in a lose-lose situation), and then with the would-be mugger he imparts wisdom and advice that younger man definitely needs to hear. I think it ties his story together so nicely, showing that he couldn't continue to be Lu Ten's father, but his fatherly nature can still be imparted to others.

I don't get the feeling that Zuko thinks he needs to be a lone wolf type. He said he didn't want to build a life in BSS, but a girlfriend would be a start to setting roots. Also, what kind of future could he have with a woman that can't even know his real name?😢

Zuko and Iroh are the literal heart and soul (respectively) of the show. It's technically about Aang and the others...but Zuko's journey from being abused and passing on that abuse to others, to healing and finding redemption, is just expertly done.
And Iroh really needs no explanation. Iroh puts to word and deed all the core values of the entire show. I've seen multiple therapists react to episodes with Iroh, and every single one emphatically praises Iroh's wisdom and efforts. Not a one disagrees with any piece of advice or knowledge he offers up.
Iroh is one of the best characters that mankind has ever made up. He's the best of all of us...most of all BECAUSE he's flawed and has made mistakes.
And thanks to him, Zuko makes his own way to it as well.

I adore you! Been watching your videos here and there when i have the time and your personality is such a light in this world. And while i love the entire avatar gang, Toph is my favorite. As a disabled woman, (I'm 27 now) seeing someone like Toph, who learned to adapt to her disadvantage, and became a strong, talented, witty and sassy girl (and later a brilliant chief of police before retiring to enjoy the peace and quiet of nature, but still a bada** who could beat most people in a fight) inspired who i am today.

There's something so poignant about Zuko's response when asked how the date went, just saying "it was nice." This is a kid who's been so abused his whole life, and to finally be shown some kindness and affection, that even though he doesn't fully appreciate it (honestly he might not even understand it), it still impacts him.

Having thought about Iroh and his son Lu Teng, I can only compare it somewhat to the conversation quote at the end of this film [character names left blank]: "You were the victim of men who think they're right (Lu Teng)..till one day you (Iroh) … believed absolutely that you were right. (besieging Ba Sing Se and from Sozin to Ozai wanting to conquer or crush other nations so they can rule in 'peace') And the truth is, of course, nobody's right." (Also, the Earth Kingdom Dai Li, Hama, Azula, as well as Zuko at the start before realising how wrong he was) (Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence 1983)

As I had just gotten home from work and finished fixing my Dinner to watch this episode, as soon as I saw this about Mako, I felt as a Shadow had passed over my Heart.
I went to my computer to find out what happened to Mako and as soon as I saw what happened, I started to have Tears in my eyes.
It seemed that I lost a very close Family member.
    "We miss you, Uncle Iroh/Mako"...
