  • Heavy dresser drawers can be a real drag when they slide on wooden runners. Our Field Editor solves the problem with ball-bearing undermount drawer slides on his Shaker-inspired Dresser in the June 2011 print issue. See his technique for installing them accurately and easily in this video.

The Accuride 1029 he's using is built specifically for undermounting. It's still not being used exactly as intended; it's sold to be used as a center-mount, single slide. I haven't tried it in multiples at the drawer edges, but it seems to be working for him.

Good instructions even though no hands on installation.
Nothing on installing the back bracket.
Read on if you are wondering how to install the back bracket. on a semi-permanent mounted cabinet. I used the 1029-121 Accuride slides.
I had a semi-permanent mounted cabinet with crappy plastic top slides, which broke years ago.
I had to find the bottom of the drawer vertically and then the horizontal center where the back bracket would connect to the back of cabinet. Then measure up 13/16” to install the back bracket through a drawer opening of only 14” wide by 7” deep. The depth to the back of the semi-permanent mounted cabinets was 22 ½”.
    Longgg reach.
So trying to reach back 22 ½” and find the level and center point and then actually installling the back bracket through a small opening was a hard thing to do. Thank god for cordless drills.
Used a 4 foot level setting on bottom of 14” opening to find the level point at the back of cabinets. Marked with pencil. Then used a measuring tape to measure to center. Another couple marks with pencil. Measure up 13/16" for #8 pan screw hole. Very hard to do all this in a tight small opening. Install bracket in long slotted screw hole, not tight yet. Put drawer in, everything checks out. Put additional screw in back bracket and tighten both down. Done.
If a 72 year old man can do it, then probably most people can. I really need to lose a little weight though.
    LOL

Really not sure why you didn't show the draw coming in and out. What does it sound like? How smooth is it? Does it take any weight when full extended? 🤦‍♀️

how do you determine what size slides you need. I have a face frame drawer but it is for small dresser. the drawer itself is 12inches long and I do have about an inch gap on either side.

awesome. exactly what i was hoping could be accomplished.
do you have an email address? i have more questions for you.
i'd like to do this style in my kitchen cabinets, with inset drawers.
what i want is a half-blind dovetailed drawer front that is exposed, just like yours, without having to shrink the box in width, and without having to add a secondary drawer front.
which model slides are these, please?
thanks again for the great video.

Is there a design difference between side mount and under mount ball bearing runners (other than the perpendicular flat piece designed to fix on the back of the cabinet carcase)? Can regular side mount ball bearing runners be used as undermount runners? My specific situation has a plank of plywood supporting the entire bottom of the drawer. The runners would be placed there just to provide smooth directional movement.

I didn't see you install the slides, and not sure how the two pieces can sit together well, I only know you installed top half first. I actually want to replace metal slides in built in cabinet, which means I only have opening in front.

Wow this is going to be a pain-in-the-ass without my own personal wood shop. I’m glad to see that it can be done, though. The side-mount would require too much deconstruction/reconstruction of the drawers and would likely cause too much damage to be worth it. My dresser is 120 yo and hand carved. beautiful but useless.

are these slides designed to be mounted on the side of the drawer and you're using them as undermount?

where can I buy this type of drawer runners? Is it possible to find them in stainless steel?
I am working in a very specific project and I am trying so hard to design an stainless steel sliding tray, that work somehow like this.

Thank you, Chris! This was very helpful. I'm not sure why some folks here require further instructions on installing these drawer slides. At some point, you got to take off the training wheels and just do it.

I guarantee you everyone coming here, including myself, bought the Richelieu undermount drawer slides, which have zero actual instructions or help. Its just all talk of how the measurements work.
There's zero instructions on actually installing the slides, no directions on where any of the pieces go, and none of the screws are labelled. So, Yeah. I had to spend 20 minutes just figuring out the tack things they gave me were so the underside of the drawer didnt rub on the bottom, and felt dumb.
